Yes, Ed! You don’t realize how posters to this site enjoyed your match reviews previously. If time/ commitments allow I’m sure we’d all be grateful to read more of them this season.

{Ed001's Note - I will try.}

I know you like the idea of Trent being the deep lying playmaker Ed1. But do you prefer him alongside a specialist DM to the dirty work for him aka Alonso alongside Mascherano from years back? Or do you think he can handle doing both work while allowing the other 2 mid to go forward more?

{Ed001's Note - I think he can do both jobs in most games and it is only really required against the Man Cities etc.}

Nice surprise read for this morning Ed. Completely agree with the note that our Pre Season programme has just began whilst Greuter were much further on and ready for their season. People seem to be panicking about this result and conceding 4 goals to a 2. Bundesliga side but it is just preseason. All that matters is that we build fitness ahead of the season and try and avoid any injuries. The result doesn't matter whatsoever.

{Ed001's Note - yep, results are irrelevant in pre-season anyway.}

Thanks for that Tris, a great summary given I could not watch the game.

Some real positives especially in the first half.

I've been reading some of the analysis on Gomez and trying to tie it back to the player we saw in 2019-20. I think he's very much a confidence player, not just in himself but in his partner. Matip does not provide that confidence, VVD at his best (which hopefully he will return to) can, as can Konate as he continues to grow.

We need to sell Matip, or at least have him as 5th choice (albeit on massive wages! ) and bring in that left sided CB. Looks like the 0.00001% chance of Gvardiol is gone, just waiting for the announcement, so maybe Micky VdV (who has not yet been confirmed by Spurs) or Inacio could be the ones. Doesn't look like Colwill is going anywhere (except Brighton as part of the Caicedo deal if reports this morning are to be believed) .

{Ed001's Note - thanks Zed.}

Can't argue with much of that Ed1, would you still have a DM next to Trent in that role, like Masherano and Alonso partnership or just change depending on the games? Agree on Gomez needing aggression, pity we couldn't merge Nat Philips with Joe.

{Ed001's Note - depending on games.}

Ed001: Thank you for taking the time to do a quick summary, always enjoy reading your thoughts on players.

A quick question: are you happy with the tatics klopp is employing?
I obviously wish we would return to the style that won us the league, but as fans we are always told football is changing.

One thing i am happy about is that for the first time in a long time, we have midfielders that carry a genuine goal threat, replacing Fabinho though will be key as he was a outstanding player for us, whoever comes in will have big shoes to fill.

{Ed001's Note - I would be happier with the tactics if the team had the right players in defence. Right now it is a bit mixed and we lack a left sided centre back willing to go onto full back areas.}

Awesome, thanks ED001 - didn't get to see the game yesterday, so good to get a good round up.

{Ed001's Note - thanks PV.}

Nice one ed I echo the above posters sentiments.

Defensive midfield certainly looks nailed on for Trent, so maybe we only need one more midfield player and a defender.

{Ed001's Note - thanks TG.}

I am just happy it isn't the southampton one!

Thanks for this ed001, enjoyed reading that.

{Ed001's Note - I will never live that one down will I?}

Ed’s, I agree Trent looks good in that space, but do you think he would play the inverted RB better than a DM? To me, he seems to get more space arriving into that area with someone giving him the ball than starting in that area?

{Ed001's Note - no, I think the DM role is much better suited for him, he understands the positioning defensively as well. The hybrid role I just do not like at all, it doesn't work. People will go crazy about how it worked for City, yet they struggled for large parts of the season because of how poorly it worked for them. No idea why people want to copy a cack idea like that. Simplicity is always better. Overcomplicating things just leads to problems.}

Defence is where I have my greatest concerns. Always build from the back.

So the question is - do we really need another DM, especially one where the price feels high (Lavia) or should we be spending the money on a couple of CBs who can cover LB/ RB if needed?

Who do we have for midfield positions now - TAA, Macallister, Szoboszlai as first choice and then Thiago, Jones, Elliott, Bajcetic, Gakpo as backup? Sounds like decent midfield options that?

I have missed them dearly, ed01. Now you have to keep doing them and only then we win the quadruple :D.

{Ed001's Note - fingers crossed they do that.}

Don’t forget guys Thiago is not gunna be around after next season if he doesn’t go this window that is . I think lavia and 1 more is what’s needed but another more defensive minded player or utility player that can play various positions to a very high standard .
