I stand to be corrected, but I do believe the first time we ever had a Sporting Director was when Damien Comolli was appointed, shortly after FSG took over. I remember it was quite a big talking point at the time, as not all Prem teams had one.
It was seen more as a continental (European) footballing structure/framework. I think we became one of 4 or 5 Prem teams that had a Sporting Director.
