Hi Ed why are these contracts taking so long? Can't we get st least one done. It can't take that long to negotiate.

{Ed001's Note - I have no idea why it is taking so long, you would need to ask Ward that.}

Would it be that the people who run club, under fsg parameters, don't really want to give anybody over 30 a contract of more than a year r a contract at all and in trents case with him being a lfc fan that they could get him on the cheap as he will sign anyway. up popped real madrid and made a mess of there 'plan'

Something has gone quite wrong in the combination of Klopp having become too powerful, the high turnover on the sporting director side, and uncertainty about Klopp’s future/ replacement, which has resulted in a near two-year hiatus on contract renewals.

If you look at the six most valuable PL squads, this is the proportion of their squad who have contracts expiring in 2008 or later:

Chelsea, 29/ 34, 85%
Spurs, 17/ 28, 61%
Man Utd, 11/ 27, 41%
Arsenal, 9/ 25, 36%
Man City, 7/ 27, 26%
Liverpool, 6/ 25, 24%

The wisest place to be is in the middle, on a nicely balanced, even spread of expiring deals. No surprises that Arsenal have been the best run club over the past few years and have it about right. City’s failure to refresh may not look terribly clever at the moment, but they are setting things up for their new sporting director to build a squad without being lumbered with many long term contracts. The Chelsea approach is a massive risk (as we know, it’s partly a PSR play), too many duds and they will be shafted for a long time, but if they end up with stacks of talented young stars on long term deals then Todd Boehlrubbish may yet turn out to be a genius.

I have to say I don’t like our situation at all, which stinks of having our eye off the ball. Basically, we now have to do renewal deals for three quarters of our entire squad over the next 18 months. Much of the focus and energy now will be on the Big Three, but meanwhile all of the other future renewals which should have been under way are stacking up. Kelleher, Konate and Robertson hit one year to go in summer - in a properly managed situation that is the deadline (not the start point) for signature or sale. Then there is a massive stack of deals expiring in 2027 which therefore need to be renewed (or the players sold) by summer 2026. I’ll bet good money that we are well behind schedule on these as the Big Three saga meanders on.

This is all the consequence of taking time off from the renewal cycle. Compressing these deals into a short window will mean we lose players we want to keep, not get full value for them in transfer fees, and have to pay over the odds for those we do keep as their contracts wind down and we find ourselves in auction situations as opposed to closing early deals. And when it comes to transfers in, the consequence of losing players we ideally would keep is that we have to make more acquisitions to replace them. A risk at the best of times, and the market will simply love our position as a forced buyer.

Am wondering because salah is the highest paid at the club weather they are sorting vvd and trents contracts out first. If they did Salah first and it was set very high the other two would know the max wage to ask for. If that makes sense.

Spot on @vango
And on top of that who’s to say new acquisitions made by the club are of the same standard to the players potentially leaving . We have the squad to compete for another 2/ 3 seasons at least I think the onus should be keeping the team together and adding a few here and their no major overhaul as it very rarely works.

03 Jan 2025 21:06:33
So you want to be Man U?

03 Jan 2025 22:23:19
I appreciate the effort you’ve put into that Vango but with all due respect it doesn’t really mean much.

It’s very easy when the players you have at the club know they are damn lucky to be earning what they’re earning. They’ll sign a new contract in.

Pressed send too early!

What I was saying is that there’s no coincidence that the 2 clubs at the bottom of that list are the 2 most successful in recent times with players that expect to be rewarded with bumper new pay rises with each new contract renewal.

That has to stop somewhere and by all accounts we broke the wage structure for Salah last time so do we just keep doing that? Then VVD and Trent want the same or more? Then Macca, then Grav, Ali, Konate?

With the new PSR and European rules every club is having to operate a little differently.

Good post Vango. I would of thought the club would know when contracts are coming up for renewal. Therefore they should have plenty of time to get the deals sorted. What surprises me is that they have failed to get them done, your top three players all out of contract at the same time. Could it be that the demands of all three are not inline with the clubs wage structure? That would make more sense than the club not even offering a contract. I would like all three to stay but if not I wish them all the best and we move on.

Why hasn't any journalists made an interview with Ward on why contracts took so long?

04 Jan 2025 04:52:54
On the other side of the argument, there is UTD.

Beyond this, Sunday at Anfield represents a contrast between two models of US ownership: financially careful, data-driven but undeniably competent on the one hand; and the hugely successful parasitism of the Glazer family and their chosen cost-cutting partners.

04 Jan 2025 07:39:05
@Lee, because th3 club don’t speak to the press about negotiations, not least because it may provide information that could be used by other clubs. We all need to exercise patience, as there is no real alternative.

04 Jan 2025 15:47:11
WDW3 of course, there is an alternative. Just make stuff up based on speculation and inuendo put into the ether by media and pundits who know nothing about anything that is really happening and then, voila.
