I can’t understand why people are moaning about us spending €100 million plus on Yan Diomande? Show me another player who can play on both wings with the adroitness he can? Yes, he’s raw, yes, he’s only had one season in top flight football so it’s a huge gamble, but isn’t any transfer? Let the guy put on the Liverpool shirt before we start maligning him. Maybe he turns out to be a 100 million bargain? Stop worrying about things that haven’t happened yet.

I remember when FSG didn’t sanction these big transfer fees under Klopp, and people were moaning.

Now they are spending big (Wirtz, Isak Yan?) and they are still getting maligned. Listen, it’s been a terrific transfer summer so far with Jacquet/Munoz, and let’s hope we add Lamine Camara, the Moroccan maestro Bouaddi, a stellar right back, and we’re cooking on gas.

For the first time in a long time, I’m excited to watch us play again, so let the club and the new manager cook, and let’s leave the moaning for when it’s deserved.

We all want him to do well, obviously. However, people are free to express any reservations they might have, as are people free to express why they think he will be a great player.
Personally, I think the lad has potential and might turn into a world beater, but I am not sure if his present level warrants 100mn. That, I guess, is also the majority opinion.

But the winger market is so overpriced and understocked right now, there seem to be no standout replacements for Salah. I would have loved us to sign Estevao, but that would not happen. Rayan seems even more raw than Diomande to me, while he has pace and power he also often takes poor touches. Barcola is a LW.

Agree totally, thekoparmy. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. The money being quoted for potential is crazy in my opinion.

21 Jun 2026 23:12:00
Barcola is not that guy, but I respect your opinion, TheKompany. Is Gordan worth 86 million? Is Wharton worth north of 80 million? Is Anderson a 100 million plus player, of course not. This is an inflated market and we have no control over finances. Most of us thought Salah was overpriced when he signed for us, and he didn't do too badly.

22 Jun 2026 01:25:13
And people would moan about us spending £10m on a winger.
Or £1m on a winger.
Or £100k on a winger.

22 Jun 2026 02:37:23
Some people just have to be whinging about something.

22 Jun 2026 02:41:24
The main reason I would say is due to expectations.

At $100mil, even in this market, you would be expecting a player to arrive who is ready to deliver at close to if not at the peak version of themself.

As opposed to buying potential. Because whether you quibble over the price of a transfer, triple digits is a lot to spend on potential.

22 Jun 2026 02:43:14
Some people moan about other people moaning about the club spending £100m on a winger. ?‍♂️

22 Jun 2026 06:43:23
Man United paid £28 million for Veron 25 years ago and he was meant to be the finished article. How did that work out for them? And incidentally he was the highest British transfer at the time.

Every transfer is a risk. Paying £100 million is normal now for potential, you can like it or loathe it but you have to accept it. Let's just be grateful FSG are sanctioning big deals.

22 Jun 2026 07:33:44
We used to moan (including me) that FSG didn't spend (despite them not getting involved in transfers), and now we moan that FSG spend too much (despite them not getting involved in transfers).

22 Jun 2026 08:17:46
I think having reservations about paying 100mil for a 19 year old with one season under his belt is a fair question tbh.

The same people who are drooling and saying pay whatever it takes are the same people who say how poor Bundesliga is defensively when it suits their narrative.

I hope he becomes an absolute worldy, but it is a huge gamble on an extremely small data set.

Surely even the people who are excited about him can acknowledge that?

22 Jun 2026 08:41:37
I think the main issue is people are now much more aware of finances in football, as it is a major part of the fun of video games such as Football Manager and EA Sports FC / FIFA.

These games give fans (myslef included) a unrealistic view of finances in football.

People assume that we will have a set budget of Xm for the year, set at the start of the season - they don't seem to appreciate the hidden costs involved in transfers (e.g. agent fees), costs of signing on bonuses (or how and when they are paid), wage costs (e.g. City fans claiming Haaland is "cheap" because he only cost 50m - ignoring his near 0.5m a week wages inc bonuses), and general payment timing and structure.

Now, more than ever, we need the wisdom and advice of Ed002 reminding us all to ingore the finances!

22 Jun 2026 09:28:31
Don't worry about the finances, just enjoy the football. The owners have shown over a long period of time that they are more than competent in running a club financially.
Yan Diomande will improve the team and if the club decided we can afford him, then I for one will be delighted if we get him.

22 Jun 2026 11:03:59
Since when has 100mil on potential become normal?

Jk - don't include me in your we argument, lol. I have never ever promoted the marquee signing, statement of intent and other ridiculous catch phrase bandied about on these forums, lol.

Can you find anyone who has made that argument and is now arguing the contrary? Or is it just one of those easy lines to say?

For me, it is always the right player at the price you are prepared to pay. Not just big money signings for the sake of it.

22 Jun 2026 11:40:37
Once again, you are only worth what someone is willing to pay to acquire your services. If the club thinks Diomande is worth it, then they will pay it and we will all get over it.

As for expectations, that's something people can control. If they wanna go overboard, then do that.

Just don't come back complaining when people get back at you for being OTT in your assessment of his play.

Cos the more expectations you put on a player, the more OTT you will sound when he is not coming good as quickly as you want. Just saying.

22 Jun 2026 11:41:22
Faith, don't worry, I don't include you in any 'we' discussions.

23 Jun 2026 02:52:36
Good, so just the broad statement based on feelings, but made to sound factual.
Chur.
