Not gonna lie, if Wirtz doesn't improve, 100+ million or not, he needs to be phased out of the team. I don't think it is entirely his fault, as he clearly has talent, but the temperament and physical attributes are simply not there, and in this league you need both.
He feels like a luxury that we can ill afford, a player that flourishes in one system and one system alone. He can't adapt to the pace or physicality, and it has become abundantly clear that there is a mental block too.
Hopefully he kicks on, or we get a good fee for him, from Bayern or someone like that, where the league is easier and he can get more instant success. Right now, he contributes very little. Poor in front of goal, lacks the killer pass and instead goes for the simple pass to the flanks, and he gets knocked off the ball very easily.
Just not worth what we paid. Not his fault, as he did not set his fee, but we paid it, and he has been incredibly disappointing, second to Isak.

If Wirtz leaves he'll be a world beater again. Don't think he was particularly bad yesterday at all, but does need to do more. I think it hurts him and Szobo, not having a midfielder who sits deeper, as everybody is trying to be everywhere.

Be interesting to see where Jurgen plays him for Germany. Slower game, of course, but I'd trust his judgement.

I thought Wirtz was a lot better than Gravenberch and Szoboszlai yesterday. It was their indiscipline that cost us yesterday.
They can't play together. Gravenberch needs to just sit to cover, or Szoboszlai needs to learn that, when Gravenberch does go forward, he needs to drop back.
It is as simple as that, but with those two it's like the Curtis Jones thing. Everyone could see what his problem was in his game, a very simple fix, but it never happened and these two seem the same.
Mac Allister seems to understand better, but he can't get round the pitch good enough and spends too much time play-acting.
Gravenberch and Szoboszlai need to learn quickly or one of them needs dropping.
Maybe get a new number 6 in the team and move Szoboszlai to the right side of the attack.
Fitness-wise, we will be better than last season, but unless they change or we sign a new midfielder, we are going to concede the same goals as last season.

Do you not find it strange that asking Szobo to be more defensive is purely because we spent such a huge amount on a 10 that's not performing. Why isn't the answer to get Szobo back in there where he likes to play. Get Wirtz out left where he prefers, play Gakpo off the right (I know it's out of position but he is probably the most capable player we have to adjust).
Surely Grav is the player that needs to be told to stop wandering too far forward, he doesn't have the attacking output that the others have. If he can't play the 6 then that's our biggest problem. No Barcola, Mbaye or Minteh are gonna stop us conceding quick turnovers.
