According to El Correo - newspaper headquartered in Bilbao - Athletic Bilbao have an agreement in place with Edin Terzic, so Iraola won't be going there.

Newcastle would be the logical next step for Iraola. Sounds like Howe is running out of road there.
He'd be insane to touch the Chelsea job.

Iraola has prem experience and the Hughes connection.
It looks like Iraola, Hoeness or Slot now.
23 Apr 2026 14:33:33
According to the BBC his family want to return to Spain. Real Madrid could do worse.

Hughes hired Slot, a coach that intentionally trains at low intensity and gives players a never before heard of number of days off.
Iraola, as per Semenyo's recent interview, doesn't give players any days off.
If he then pivots to Iraola, what does that say about Richard Hughes footballing idea? Flakey!

Not interested in what it says about Hughes, just get the right manager in to play the right way
23 Apr 2026 15:43:02
FPF Hughes also hired Iraola for Bournemouth
23 Apr 2026 15:49:30
Itll be Alonso

Fly I don't think Hughes has any idea when it comes to football, besides he's little more than Edwards hand puppet if you ask me. The consensus seems to be that Hoeness is 2nd favourite to Alonso and very much willing to take on the job, I think Nagelsmann is 3rd. I don't see Iraola being brought in. I don't think Alonso's going to be keen on coming in under the current set up, the execs have far too much control over the football.
Just look at this season, big name players brought in with little direction, arguably stylistic mismatches, 450m spent to go backwards, theeres a huge disconnect between Slot, Hughes and Edwards. Xabi well knows it, I doubt very much he wan'ts to be subject to the poor decisions of the leptop guru's. IF he comes in I believe Hughes/Edwards will have to massively loosen the rains, something I doubt will happen unless Hogan/FSG step in.

Ron, you mean get the manager YOU want who plays the way YOU think is the right way. :)
Iraola is a Bielsa disciple. Perhaps one day a Bielsa disciple will prove history wrong and be successful at a big club with big expectations. In the famous words of the late Ed002, don't hold your breath.
23 Apr 2026 17:03:50
Hughes was an actual professional footballer for a fair few years wasn't he?
23 Apr 2026 17:06:25
It is possible that Alonso may have his eye on the City job, too. City could win the title and possibly the domestic treble and that could be a point for Pep to make his exit. Man City was on Alonso's list of desired clubs.
23 Apr 2026 17:24:51
We all see football differently Hughes is just way out of his depth. The gap from where he should be to elite ( we was elite when he arrived and fooked us up) is massive. I think he got to go with slot.
23 Apr 2026 19:01:38
FPF - that's the same thing.
I don't care what the managers name is, they need to be the right man who is going to play attacking, effective football.

Not sticking up for those up top but a big rebuild was required the players we loved and cheered on week in week out were mostly aging or gone and Diaz wanted out for sometime. We tried to fill the Fab/ Hendo slots numerous times lost out twice to Chelski and then to Arsenal, maybe the right player wasn't available, plus Grav was in prem team of the year so maybe wasn't seen as priority. With the frontline we bought one of the best in the prem - unfortunately due to the fiasco no preseason which is v important then gets injured. Ekitike was bought as he became available and we didn't want that talent going elsewhere, plus we needed the reinforcements. Wirtz looked like a great buy and we bought one of the best left backs in the league. I still feel we need at least another 4 btw! The team hasn't knitted as well as it should though and the integration of the new players into the first team was poor.
We have also bought a few for the future which is important and whilst I can't stand another snore fest of the tosh we've been serving up on the field and the two at the top may be also be absolutely clueless esp in contract and wage negotiations, I don't think the window was that bad, on the other hand the winter transfer of the two that landed at Citeh was a joke. Last two seasons we've been exposed by, tactics aside, a lack of pace, electric on the wings and pace with mobility in the middle. If we can address this and get the right manager this team could become something special again. Just a slightly different perspective and one who lives in hope of losing my voice in celebrations rather than what are they playing at!

Iraola is going home does not want to stay in England.
24 Apr 2026 01:05:09
Iraola would struggle at Real Madrid. Not because of his abilities or his footballing philosophy but the Madrid players are allergic to hard work. If they rejected and revolted against Alonso, then they'd never take to Iraola. Iraola would make the players work as hard as Alonso, if not harder.
25 Apr 2026 01:59:57
We can all understand why Iraola might want to return to Spain, but not everybody sees it the same way, with our current head coach perhaps wanting to return to Holland.
