Can't wrap my head about this , but why does it seems like all the sporting directors we want are rejecting us, Is LFC not attractive enough. All we get is reject reject and reject .

Tnat

{Ed001's Note - they are probably just wary as right now Klopp has most of the power of an SD. The role and responsibilities will need to be more clearly defined than they are now. I don't think I would want the job as things stand, if I was a neutral. If anything goes wrong between now and the end of the season, who is going to get the blame? It would be blamed on the SD for upsetting the apple cart as Klopp is going for every trophy going. No, it would defo be the time to sit back and wait until you can see where the club is headed after Klopp and how the role of SD will work.}

Ed1. I’m genuinely asking and not being funny for the sake of it. But how would a sporting director coming in, say March, upset the apple cart? Klopp is leaving by the time the next transfer window comes round. So, like any outgoing manager, I would expect him not to interfere in those matters and leave the squad development to the next manager and SD.

Only thing I can think of that the sporting director could upset the apple cart, so to speak. Would be contract extensions and informing people they’re surplus to requirements. The standout potential contract extensions would be Salah, VVD and Trent who, according to various report (not sure if true or not) is close to signing a new contract. Surely the SD and manager would assess the squad fully when they officially take their positions, to decide who they want to keep going forward. Which would be after the season has finished, thus not impacting the current season.

{Ed001's Note - the SD needs to be in place immediately and to begin making those plans right now, not after the season. It is too late then to plan replacements, that is when you end up with poorly scouted panic buys etc. The SD would be the one making the decisions on contracts usually, but with Klopp here still, is that going to be the case? It doesn't seem that way to me.}

I guess we will have to wait and see.

3.) 14 Feb 2024 12:57:28
Dont you think its kinda an important appointment now that Klopp is to leave Ed? With Klopp, one would assume he is going to bring in success no matter who the sporting director is.

{Ed001's Note - it is a vital appointment, but that doesn't mean it is easy. I see Steidten has dropped hints he is open to hearing Liverpool's offer earlier.}

4.) 14 Feb 2024 13:37:24
Ed1. Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Get the SD in immediately and start planning for the future. I really hope you’re wrong on Klopp wanting to get involved in upcoming contract extensions. But having read the site over the years I’m aware he has interfered in signings and contracts in the past. I also know that this most likely led to Micheal Edwards and possibly Julian Ward leaving the club. Guess we will wait and see what happens.

{Ed001's Note - I am sure he is happy to hand over but what sporting director is going to accept that on trust? They will know what Klopp is like, so they will want guarantees.}

I know this is a difficult question but what's your opinion of Steiden?

I know it's difficult to judge a DOFs work. It's not like you see most of the work on TV or elsewhere. Seems to have a good player purchase record though and a relationship with Alonso.

Sounds like it could be a good appointment.

{Ed001's Note - he has done good work at West Ham, though hindered by Sullivan. I would be quietly confident that he could do a good job for us based on his record.}

6.) 14 Feb 2024 14:12:42
In your opinion Ed001, how much involvement should a manager have in the sporting directors role? Did Klopp have too much power and the director should be in more control or should the manager have more power since they train the players and pick the startling eleven?

In my opinion I think the manager should act as an interested stakeholder and voice their opinion but the sporting director being a specialist in their role may be more well versed in doing what's best for the club. In reality it is probably case by case depending on each club and manager involved.

{Ed001's Note - the sporting director should be over the head coach and be in charge of setting the direction the club goes. The head coach should have no involvement in appointing one.}

7.) 14 Feb 2024 14:41:55
Is Klopp shall I say very forceful Ed his way or no way?

{Ed001's Note - not really forceful, but he knows what he wants and it can take a fair bit to persuade him to change tack.}

8.) 14 Feb 2024 15:06:43
Cheers Ed. I think he sounds like a good one also. He is one of the ones I'm hoping for without being any expert on DOFs. De Bruyne, Diaby, Frimpong, Kudus etc. and many more impressive signings. Does seem to have a good eye for recruitment on smaller budgets.

{Ed001's Note - it is difficult to evaluate them, but he does seem one of the better options. Maybe even the best option.}

9.) 14 Feb 2024 15:20:26
The problem is if you pick a SD and he doesn't get on with the HC or Manager then it will all breakdown. The SD buys a player, the Manager doesn't rate him and as such doesn't pick him. We have seen this before. The only way it can work is the club have a direction, the Manager sees a position problem and the SD identifies a number of players who fit the criteria. Discussions take place re price wages suitability and agreement reached and the SD tries to sign the player but the Manager has the ultimate decision who is signed as he will be employed or sacked depending on results.

10.) 14 Feb 2024 16:17:59
Alwaysred, that's why on a normal basis, you hire the DOF first who then hires the manager and they both handle transfers based on the style of play they both agree on and want to deploy along with related issues on how the club should move forward. That's the way it is supposed to work. It's the same thing in the NFL. You hire the General Manager (or DOF) who is head of player personnel management who then hires the Head Coach and then, they decide on the type of style they want to play and draft or sign free agents to fit it. Both the HC and the DOF are "joined at the hip", as they say in the NFL. The same thing is the case in football, IMO.

Also IMO, The DOF should not be signing players the manager does not want in any shape or form cos that can cause issues. Here, Klopp essentially had the final say on transfers and we can see the few probs. that brought even tho, things worked out well for the most part. We have to get it right on this front, for sure.

11.) 15 Feb 2024 12:14:21
Even if you get a DOF and a manager who are in "sync" you have to allow room for both error and luck, when it comes to recruitment of players. It's football and very little about it is an exact science. You can pick and buy a 4th choice player for a position and end up with a world-class Mohammed Salah. Or you can also pick out and buy 1st choice world class players like a Keita or Thiago and end up being severely disappointed. So many factors involved.

12.) 15 Feb 2024 14:50:39
What’s more impressive about him Ed001is that JWP wasn’t his signing. That one would have worried me otherwise! Completely believable he was a Moyes signing without needing to confirm it mind.

I feel like I’m missing something here, or maybe it’s my naturally pragmatic outlook, but to me Ed, as much as I didn’t want Klopp to leave yet, Alonso and Steidten look like a pretty good duo to bring in now, do they not? Our squad seems as tactically flexible and technically proficient as they’ve ever been under Klopp, with plenty of youngsters to build around and with a DOF with a good track record to replace some of our ageing stars in the next few weeks.

{Ed001's Note - it does feel like a natural progression to get those two in. It would take it from being an ending, to being a new beginning.}

13.) 15 Feb 2024 19:42:39
Have I missed something?

Have a load of SDs declined us?

Genuine question.
