ed001 can you please tell me why most people on here suddenly seem to think Jo Gomez is an awful Defender. Am sure he was part of the best defence in the league for the last 2 seasons. And when he was fully fit in both them seasons his partnership with VVD was when we was at are best.

{Ed001's Note - I have no idea why people don't rate him, he is the best English centre-back around, by a mile, and one of the best in Europe. People seem to judge him on a few poor games at the end of the season, while conveniently forgetting the whole team was poor, including Virgil alongside him. He is the best partner for van Dijk.}

Nailed it Ed. Also I think because of the useless England fans that dislike him after the handbags with Sterling, it’s rubbed off on some of our lot. He’s 23 years old! I for one hope he’s still at Liverpool in 6 years time when he’s the best CB on the planet.

{Ed001's Note - I am surprised England fans don't love him, considering how much better he is at centre-back than any other English player.}

I completely agree he is already a very good player, young English, has some things he needs to work on but I wouldn’t want to buy someone to replace him.

If slab head was worth 80m then Gomez is worth more than that.

I think maybe one more season then we should be looking to phase out Matip, with someone new, unfortunately just can’t keep fit enough. Hopefully after this year we will have a better understanding of how the young lads are doing.

I would like prefer to see 4th choice as a target for all our young cb’s, give them the opportunity to work for it.

He was the best player for England yesterday (bar the pen which was unlucky) and his range of passing in to midfield has improved.

Ed who would you put as our 4th choice CB right now?

I would have said ki Jana is far ahead of VDB and Billy but klopp always seems to use ki Jana at full back?

Is this because his future is seen here or just a victim of his versatility that he can be shoehorned in there?

Because with Trent and neco, right back seems covered for many a year so would like to see him get more opportunities at CB. Your thoughts?

{Ed001's Note - Hoever is not really a centre-back for me, he is better at right-back and says so himself. I remain to be convinced Williams is the future at right-back personally. Phillips is currently the man I would have 4th choice, only because Koumetio and vdB are so young.}

Gomez is slowly gaining a reputation with England fans that Alan Hansen had with Scots?
He’s too cultured for them, but you’d just hope that our own supporters would see that.

As shown in the past England fans are Not the most intelligent when it comes to supporting their own players
John Barnes waddle McManaman show this in abundance
So I would not worry too much about them mate.

It is a team consist of human. We can't expect them to perform extremely consistent throughout a period without blips like machines. There are loads of factors involved; health, mental, family and so on. And this is what baffles me; some uninspiring performances and suddenly some of the players and the team are considered not good. And they just won trophies!

England fans aren't the brightest crayons in the box.

Then again, Irish fans habitually overhype any young player who can trap a ball correctly as the next big thing, so I probably can't say much.

06 Sep 2020 12:40:57
He's actually a good player, ed, that's why England fans don't like him.

{Ed001's Note - I think the vast majority would like someone more like themselves, like Stuart Pearce for example. You know white, racist and a thug who went on wild benders to get into fights away from the limelight in places such as Ireland.}

I'm not convinced on William's at all. i pray he is amazing but I have a feeling he won't quite cut the mustard. The jury is out for me on this lad, although hope I'm wrong of course.

{Ed001's Note - he has time to learn to defend, but he is miles off being ready imo right now. I am very surprised he is getting such hype to be honest.}

Agreeing with ED001 again, Gomez is streets above other English defenders, alas the majority can't see it.
I think he lacks confidence, a few goals might do him good, he is also a great crosser and accurate freekick taker.

{Ed001's Note - don't worry, I am sure it won't become a habit you agreeing with me!}

Hoever is a better right back in my opinion. I do think Williams has a future here though. I see him as Milner's long term replacement as a versatile squad player who can cover left back, right back, centre midfield and right midfield.

Even the great Man United teams had guys like Wes Brown and Darren Fletcher who'd just fill in gaps. He's a decent player.

I read on here a while back that Gomez had a few personal issues which contributed to a loss of form, are these now resolved does anyone know?

{Ed001's Note - that would be best answered by Square Tomato.}

14.) 06 Sep 2020
06 Sep 2020 13:23:42
Agree Williams is a good attacking fullback but needs to improve defensively. Teams have and will target him and cause us problems. Hoever is solid defensively already and can do the attacking side as well, so should be Trent's backup for now imo.

15.) 06 Sep 2020
06 Sep 2020 13:31:17
You'd be surprised how many people think Maguire is better than Gomez, quite alarming actually 😳.

{Ed001's Note - do you work at a lobotomy clinic by any chance?}

16.) 06 Sep 2020
06 Sep 2020 13:37:56
Do you see Williams as a right full ed or better suited to a other position

He is very comfortable on the ball.

{Ed001's Note - he was not good enough on the wing, so I am not sure. He needs a couple more years development at full-back to see if he is going to be good enough. Trent wasn't good enough defensively either at first, so there is hope for Williams, so long as he can learn to be more aware of what is happening.}

Haha when I read that stuff it makes me question everything I think I know about football, maybe I'm the one who needs the operation 🤣.

Also on Neco I think he will be a solid RB over time. When Trent emerged he had a fair few games when he had defensive mares but the patience with him well and truly paid off.

Neco has all the benefits. Working with Klopp an the team who have a track record of improving almost every player. The perfect role model in Trent. And also he has the Luxury of dipping in and out of the team so he can reflect on his performances. Trent was rather thrown in the deep end and thankfully for us he had the quality and character to come through those difficult periods in flying colours.

If Gomez went to City or Utd today, he would improve their defence immediately esp. that of City, IMO. Ability wise, NO England CB comes anywhere close to his ability and not even the perennially dreadful Harry Maguire comes anywhere close to him. Leicester will be smiling to the bank with that one for decades to come.

The guy is amazing. I have said it before, ANY CB that can outplay VVD on several occasions, is a force to be reckoned with. The guy's upside and ceiling is off the charts, IMO. Does he have poor games? Of course, he does and that can happen to a young player who despite his immense ability, is still learning the game at 22/ 23.

I think cos people just want a new CB in so someone has to go. Lovs has gone so let us find who the scapegoat should be and it is Gomez now, basing their opinion to bin him cos he had a few poor moments in a couple of games. Not bothered, really.

As for the English fans not rating Gomez, there is a lot of agenda-driven fans about so I won't even bother addressing that part even tho some Sterling fans are prolly still sore that Gomez changed their idol's diapers vs City last season in front of the whole world.

The only time I would pick Maguire over gomez would be if I was off to Greece for a pub fight and to take their police on.

Jk23, you killed me with that one, man. I would advise Maguire to focus morew on trying to stop himself from being nutmegged for the upteenth time in the PL by the "great" Junior Stanislas rather than going to Greece on a lash and getting himself a two day stay at the "Mikonos Hilton".

My theory is - because on camera he looks a bit small. He's not, he's well proportioned. The guy is huge. But I thought he was a bit small for z while.

Personally, I think Neco will end up being a really solid right back. He has all of the tools, in my opinion. Just needs more game time to learn the position better. He's still young, he'll be fine.

Joe needs to cut out the mistakes he's started making lately which is probably why Klopp wants a first team CB and why Southgate will probably drop him after nearly giving the game away last night. Don't get me wrong I'm a big big fan and i think he should start every game as he can only get better but he has started to make mistakes lately.

Hoever looks ahead of Williams. Every time I’ve watched Williams he’s made about 2/ 3 bad mistakes each game.
