This may be a controversial opinion but so be it. Newcastle got what they deserved. The time wasting tactics backfired. Rules need to be put in place similar to basketball where you have 5 seconds to get the ball back in play. If you don't it goes to the other team. So, if you waste time taking a goal kick taking more than 5 seconds a corner is awarded to the other side. I also think that if a player is hurt enough to have play stopped then the player comes off. I'd you've run out of substitutes, tough. The lone exception would be a head injury. Too many players roll around like they've been shot or fake a cramp just to waste time. The other thing is give a yellow to a player who deliberately stands in the way to prevent a free kick from being played. Keep the action moving and flowing and take the bs time wasting tactics out. I'll probably get blasted but just my opinion.

Karma for time wasting mate.

Stone not controversial at all. You live by the sword you die by the sword.

They caused the injury time with the amount of cramp they supposedly had. At one stage I was expecting Eddie Howe to go down with cramp on the sideline or John Henry getting cramp from opening his wallet up in the stand.

Unsportsmanlike behaviour seems to be getting worse and worse in football and unless something gets done about it it’ll just get worse and worse every season.

Spot on stone it ridiculous at this stage. Every game at anfield opposition just throwing themselves to ground, refs need 2 wise up bit.

Totally agree Stone!

Or maybe like Rugby, just stop the clock when the ball goes dead. Would make time wasting meaningless.

Serves them right for trying to teach they're Grandma to suck eggs.

Time wasting is annoying but it's a tool just like parking the bus.

It isn't pretty but for some teams it's a tool to get a result. All teams use it at various points, whether it is to stop the tide or to see the game out.

But I do think the refs can do more, don't be afraid to book people early in matches to stamp ot out. Too often keepers take ages over goal kicks and only get booked in the 80th minute, far too late at that point.

there will always be ways to take time out of games, I. e. feigning injury or taking an age over throw ins etc. And the more they clamp down on things, they will just find other ways to do it.

You both may be right but in my mind we won the game fair and square. We scored more than they did, in regulation time, and that's all that matters and counts. I like Eddie Howe, but for him to come out and say they deserved more was disappointing. How you can think you deserve more for that anti-football spectacle that was on display, is beyond me.

Newcastle absolutely deserved to lose with their antics fair play to the ref for extending the time.

Spot on Stone. Players keep doing it because by and large they get away with it. Btw great to see Harvey get up after getting kicked tonight. Ran his socks off . Think him (and every time I see him the better I think he seems) and Carvalho are gems in the making.

I don't think it is controversial at all. There were 5 minutes added time and during that the Newcastle goalkeeper spent 2 minutes on the floor getting treatment. Time wasting is one of the worst elements of football, it should never be rewarded. Justice was served.

Absolutely, or if you go down with cramp, leave the field for treatment, especially at 75 mins, in Brazil the GK goes down injured because they don’t leave the field.

Poetic justice, the extra minutes for the GK “injury” lol.

Or rugby league type time keeper, stopping clock etc.

I'am with you Stone Funny how the physio didn't come on after 90 mins, just for Pope who had the physio after 3 mins and 93 mins. As you say justice was done and Shay Given not happy with 8 mins added on then stop the time wasting.

Just wait and watch Everton does this weekend. The time wasting against Leeds was at another level.

Don’t think that’s controversial Stone. Just stating facts mate.

Newcastle got exactly what they deserved.

Will be good practice for the weekend. Given the extent of Everton’s time wasting against Leeds you can only imagine how bad it will be on Saturday.

Rules are all well and good but the problem is that the refs actually have to enforce them, which just won't happen. For example, how many keepers have we seen waste time at Anfield in the past year and how many of them were actually booked?

18.) 01 Sep 2022
31 Aug 2022 23:42:33
Yep, doesn’t always work that way but tonight it did.

The Newcastle lads will be thinking that they did everything right though and that they were just unlucky. I believe it’s the culture and the rules that are wrong not the individuals. The culture won’t change until the rules do. Stone’s right for me, change the rules. The managers will play to the rules not what’s sporting, to be fair that’s their job.

The 8th minute goal says it all. But let's not forget we are all allways at it ?.

I thought there was a rule of like 6 seconds or something like that for the goalie to clear the ball from their hands? and then they removed it or relaxed the interpretation. it's a blight on the game and football is the worst at allowing this to happen from early in the game. the ref gave the goal keeper a warning late in the game but should have been on top of it from the first half. Bit like everton.

I dunno, maybe just me, but I think they under use the yellow card and then they suddenly brandish it almost reactionary. I am pretty sure if you give one verbal warning for silly things like wasting time, yelling back at the ref and then the next time it happens whoever it is you card them. Do that consistently and you will change the game.

Spoils the game as a spectacle. Agree there should be a time limit for set pieces and having to leave the field if the games stopped due to injury.
