Emlyn Hughes Was before my time guys so for any of the older fans on here how good was he and would he be close to all time 11 as left back as I think probably weakest position for the players we had. Had so many great right backs Neal Nicol Jones as the three best I can think of.

Alan Kennedy
Robbo
Aurelio.

Grino, Hughes didn't play regularly at LB, from memory, so it would be difficult to justify putting him in that position in an all time best XI. He always seems to get overlooked in his more accustomed CB position, when it comes to selecting the best ever XI. Personally, when selecting my best all time XI, I'd be tempted to go for Robertson, with Nicol at RB.

Nicol was brilliant in every position he played. He could play anywhere along the backline and midfield. I'd feel comfortable having him at left back when picking a greatest 11.

12 Sep 2025 20:00:07
Rome yeah I know he was mainly a cb for Liverpool but mainly lb for England so it’s obviously no problem playing there so am just wondering did he deserve a place in the all time 11 and lb is the only place.

12 Sep 2025 21:03:15
I’d have to have Kennedy at lb forgot how many titles he won but he definitely scored 2 winning goals in European cup finals. 81 and im sure he got the last pen in 84 ( was that grob spaghetti legs)

12 Sep 2025 21:23:46
Yes, scouse John, Kennedy scored the winning pen in 84. He's nowhere near our all time best XI in my opinion. Over the years it's probably been the one position where we've never had a truly world class player. There's an argument to put Lawrenson there, as he often gets overlooked, probably because his career was cut short. Another player, like Nicol, who could play anywhere across the back and also slot into midfield.

Not many people mention it but Gerry Byrne our left back in Shank’s days was in the 1966 World Cup squad, along with Cally and Sir Roger. He wouldn’t be a bad shout and he had plenty of, as Shanks said, “raw courage” having played 80 odd minutes and then 30 minutes of extra time with a broken collar bone.

12 Sep 2025 23:16:50
Sorry, the match I was talking about, although I’m sure most of you know anyway, was the 65 Cup Final versus Leeds in 1965.

I think Aurelio was similar to Rob Jones in a way both really talented but both stuffed by injuries. I’d go with the two I’ve mentioned and Alan Kennedy - who wasn’t spectacular or flash but who got the job done without any fuss and, as said, scored the winner in two European Cups, which is pretty impressive by any standard.

12 Sep 2025 23:42:26
Nicol was brilliant but he’s a blurt now so doesn’t get in for me. Barney has got to get it not just for what he won but what he won for the in them 2 finals.

13 Sep 2025 07:58:54
Alan Kennedy set us on the road to greatness. Solid left-back nothing flashy but never ever let us down. Has to be in the running.

Robbo is similar, minus the crucial goals.

Staunton may have been #1 if Souness hadn’t sold him to Villa (unforgivable! )

Jim Beglin though …

Everyone else was parsnips (full of ifs and buts) : Ablett, Bjornebye, Ziege, Riise, Aurelio … the list goes on and on.

Lawrenson (CB), Hughes (CB/ CDM) and Nicol were not LBs.

Nicol was a bit like Gerrard, could play anywhere, but still a square peg.

Kennedy for me.

13 Sep 2025 10:14:58
Alec Lindsey anyone, scored the best non goal in a cup final.

StE I met Stevie Staunton, he was a right **** bag tbh, it was after that incident I re-evaluated what Souness had done, came to the conclusion that GS was correct.

Hughes is one of my fave all time Liverpool players but I didn't really get to see him play. I always had in my mind him playing in a defensive midfield position. He was tough all round player and definitely falls in the underrated category.

13 Sep 2025 11:49:40
Alan Kennedy ( Barney Rubble) for me at left back . scored the winner twice in European cup finals . Hughes although he did play left back he was mainly a CB but who could forget his Liverpool are magic, Everton are tragic song.

13 Sep 2025 12:01:44
Staunton had a wand of a left foot and was ferocious in a tackle.

13 Sep 2025 13:11:10
@Strom, it was brilliant, out the from of St George’s Hall off his face. I nteresting that he and his CB partner didn’t get on at all and I’d side with Crazy Horse every day of the week.

Wdw. yea Hughes was rotten stinking drunk when he sang that . which makes it even better for some reason.
