Why Liverpool Should Revisit The Diamond Formation

{Ed's Note - RedDawn has posted a new article entitled, Why Liverpool Should Revisit The Diamond Formation

Algoods then you remember Isak isn’t fit and there’s every chance one of Isak or Ekitike will be united or needing rest

Then 2 up front fantasy falls flat.

I'd like to see it tried. I don't see any reason why Salah couldn't also play more centrally considering how ineffective he has been starting wide this year so I do think we have the numbers for it.

Faith, it's like playing the back 3. We can barely field 2 CB's in a game yet people want a back 3 with 3 fit CB's in the squad? Yeah, I don't get it either.

Let’s face it, spending over £230m on buying Isak and Wirtz has screwed up our season. We should have spent that money on Guehi (Hughes completely messed this up thinking we could get him on the cheap) and another CD to replace Konate, Quansah and the constantly injured Gomez. And then a load on a top class midfielder with intensity, who can cover ground and win tackles to compliment the rest of the midfielders especially given Slot doesn’t fancy Endo. This along with Kerkez appearing to not have enough game intelligence and no one knowing where Frimpong will fit means we spent the most money we’ve ever spent on weakening the team.

The players who left are better than the ones who replaced them meaning we aren’t as good. We are now in a position where no one including the manager knows what formation we should play and who he should pick. Top 4 and a run in a cup and let’s hope we have money left to spend a lot on a top class CD, a top class CDM and someone to replace Salah as even with Salah’s dire performances Slot won’t pick Chiesa. It’s a disaster.

{Ed001's Note - that is simply not true, there was no getting him on the cheap, we had agreed to pay Palace's asking price but Glasner threw his toys out of the pram and scuppered all incoming replacements.}

WarMachine, you do know that Guehi was having his medical at the AXA facility before as Ed said, Glasner threw his toys out of the pram, right?

13 Nov 2025 11:34:56
Understood Ed01 re price. Leaving it to the last day with no plan B then was the disaster.

Faithnworks Gakpo, Chiesa and salah can all play as centre forwards. I think out of possession they can go wider and when in possession looking to play to make that inside run between fb and cb.
Wirtz can have have free rein with the other midfield 3 sitting deeper plugging gaps and recycling possession.

FBs can take in turns offering width, I think this is how you get the best out of the players we have.

The Real Madrid performance was the blueprint. The off the ball work and shape was near perfect and the on the ball work aggressive and direct. We switched between a low block and aggressive press throughout the game.

The coach and players should be able to repeat this over the next 10 games which sees us through to January.

At that point, Dickie and Mickey need to add some ball progression and muscle to the squad to give us a chance of doing something special in the second half of the season.

Guehi was for the present and Leoni was for the future. That would have been a good plan if Glasner had not thrown his toys out the pram and scuppered the Guehi deal. Guehi was literally doing a medical with us when the plug got pulled so not sure what Plan B we should have done especially since Palace was willing to sell to us and everything had looked positive prior to that.

Our Plan A was going smoothly until the very last minute.

13 Nov 2025 18:08:39
Plan B should have been either Guehi signs by X date (at least 1-2 weeks before deadline day) or we move onto the next ‘one for the present’ defender signing which we have identified through meticulous research, that should fit our team shape and how we play perfectly. I’m sure there’ll be a list somewhere here of who we identified / could have signed Ed02, Carra, Fields, etc.

Instead, we aren’t fully reliant on a player who is playing like he wants to be in Madrid, usually misses a lot of games through injury and who you can count the number of good games he has on one hand throughout the season.
