Very impressed with the 1st half, Nyoni, Chambers, Morrison and Ndukwe all playing extremely well. The whole team is pressing well, Dom putting in the hard work to turn over balls on a couple of occasions. Isak finally looks fit and sharp, Wirtz took his goal well. If nothing else, Iraola's team won't lack effort and will definitely entertain. So far so good.

Same old, same old - look great the give it all away. Although I will say Mamardashvil looked more Granmadahvili for the third goal.

Then Jones, Elliot and Grav came on and we fall apart. More questions than answers atm.
02 Aug 2026 23:10:19
Yeah Jones, Grav in midfield really doesn't work.
Jones still playing slot ball.
02 Aug 2026 23:13:57
They didn't even complete a pass forward until we were 4-2 down. Utter garbage from all 3 MFs. No fight and zero composure.
02 Aug 2026 23:16:21
Apart from Ngumoha, we have no player who is able to take a ball and drive at the opposition.
From what I saw in this game, the young lad, together with Nyoni, deserve starting spots among the current squad.
We need a better player than Gravenberch. All I see is shades of last season going forward.
02 Aug 2026 23:19:54
Jones and Gravenberch playing slot ball hiding and passing backwards. Seeing Nyoni, his first thought is to pass forward on like Gravenberch and Jones.
Maybe I am overreacting from Gravenberch's performance else hmm.

Somebody get Jones on the next flight to Milan. I take back every time I defended him.
02 Aug 2026 23:39:00
Anybody still think I was exaggerating when I said Nyoni could take Gravenberch's place in the team this season? ?
02 Aug 2026 23:39:07
Another shocker from Jones. Get him gone. Offers absolutely nothing.
02 Aug 2026 23:41:08
With our obvious lack of squad depth, there are some free agents all of a sudden looking appealing. A certain international striker and midfielder, currently in Italy, and, dare I say, even an English winger who may just need a good coach.
Salah and Darwin even. Help me, I'm showing signs of desperation and panic. All that lay out last season and I feel more nervous now than I did before we bought them.
02 Aug 2026 23:45:45
Jones is absolutely useless. Needs to be sold and cannot be an option in centre midfield next season. Dreadful player.
02 Aug 2026 23:56:39
For some reason they decided to play Slot ball in the second half. The result surprises nobody.
Eye-openers of the pre-season so far have been Nyoni, Koumas and Ndukwe for me. Nyoni already belongs in the squad of 25; he's above Jones' level already and a good replacement.
And Koumas will come in handy in Cup games, or to fill in for injuries and rotation. You can see the fight and hunger in his play.

Everyone's moaning about Jones, and rightly so, but Gravenberch is earning nearly £300k a week, and looks like he'll be holding bench for an 18-year-old's first proper season in the prem.

Let's judge those playing their first PSF after a few more games. Their fitness levels and sharpness will be nowhere near needed yet.
No point being critical in PS, as everyone needs to learn AI's system, and we are currently only playing Kerkez from our first choice back 5 (maybe Frimpong too, but I'd not play him).
03 Aug 2026 00:32:58
Brommers, Jones has always been like this. No amount of coaching is changing him. In his deluded head he thinks he's a hybrid of Redondo/Xavi/Iniesta when in reality he's an inferior version of Joe Allen, who himself wasn't very good.
03 Aug 2026 00:44:39
Maybe there's no Slotball. Just average players in midfield.
03 Aug 2026 04:37:59
In context, Grav has basically just got back from holiday and didn't play well in a pre-season kick about. He needs to improve his fitness and focus, but I wouldn't quite give up on him just yet. Let's see what AI can do with him.

@Jude Y, I thought the same but held myself from typing before I took my reaction overboard, but whoever thought Gravenberch deserved those wages deserves to be sacked. Previous players who were far better and influential in the Klopp days didn't get as much.
