Name a brilliant underrated player that went under the radar for just how good they were. Could be any league and any time really.
I'll go with Lubo Moravcik for Celtic. Amazing player.

Lucas Leiva for us. Unbelievably underrated imo. Shame he struggled so badly with injury.
Playing at the minute, I'm going to get absolutely slaughtered for this, but I think Kai Havertz is underappreciated by his own and wider football fans. I think he has excellent technique, is good in the air and works very hard.

What a great question. I hate to say it, but Dennis Irwin for me.
{Ed025's Note - great player AOE..
08 Sep 2026 22:37:57
Maybe not too underrated, but maybe Carrick for me.
08 Sep 2026 22:56:36
Didi Hamann

Irwin was a great call to be fair.

For Liverpool, I’m going Emlyn Hughes. One of our all-time greats, but goes under the radar as does Ray Kennedy.
From other clubs and another blast from the past - Gary Mabbutt! Proper pro and a lovely bloke.

John Wark won the league twice in his first two seasons and was top goal scorer. Never gets a mention that’s underrated for me.
09 Sep 2026 00:45:41
Good call with John Wark.
I’m going for Ronnie Whelan.
09 Sep 2026 02:33:12
Not sure if under-rated, as everyone talks favourably about him, but Mousa Dembele's career was criminally average. I always thought he was exceptional for Tottenham, but no big team ever went in for him, despite his qualities. His ability, attitude and performances deserved more, and it is a real shame he didn't amount to more.
09 Sep 2026 03:07:52
Ronnie Whelan 100% never gets enough recognition.
Let's not forget Steve Finnan as well.
{Ed078's Note - Paul Konchesky anyone?
09 Sep 2026 06:29:45
Steve Finnan... good shout, Barry.
09 Sep 2026 07:19:39
Was going to say Steve Finnan, Mr consistent.
09 Sep 2026 07:25:24
Steve Nicol. Could play anywhere across back 4 or midfield either. RB was his main position and he scored a lot of goals from there including a hat trick against Newcastle (think he RB that day). Footballer of the year in 89. Wonderful player. Goodness knows what he'd be worth in today's market.
09 Sep 2026 07:29:33
Sammy Lee.
09 Sep 2026 07:38:18
Forgot Craig Johnston, good player and designed good football boots.
09 Sep 2026 07:46:54
Cyrille Regis.
09 Sep 2026 09:35:06
Fatwallet, Johnston was my Dawg growing up in the mid-80s, man. I wanted to play like him back then.
That being said, a lot of great shouts on this thread.
For me, I have to go for Steve Finnan, as well. Criminally underrated.

I have only seen YouTube videos of him, but Garrincha looked a brilliant player for Brazil. Different era of footballers playing on horrible pitches and getting the cack kicked out of them. What a special talent he seemed though.
09 Sep 2026 10:44:11
I loved Steve Finnan, 7 out of 10 week in, week out and a decent crosser. That’s all you needed from your fb. Now it is all about inverted nipples and ball progressions.
09 Sep 2026 10:47:11
Stephan Henchoz
09 Sep 2026 11:01:22
And Lawrie Cunningham Rome!!!
09 Sep 2026 12:19:15
Daniel Sturridge.
{Ed025's Note - your kidding right??..
09 Sep 2026 13:00:21
Matt Le Tissier
