Don't know the ins and outs and we might still sign him this window. But if reports are true about us not willing to meet Guehi's new wage demand and he goes City, I honestly don't know what we are doing. He is prem proven so no adaption period to the league required, a leader and for around £30 million offers good value for money irrespective of his contract situation.

Again, if reports are true it makes no sense that we were prepared to put someone like Gakpo on £250k per week but are penny pinching on a much needed centre back.

You know Guehi, whilst a good defender is not the second coming of Franco Baresi?

16 Jan 2026 12:58:50
Absolutely Alonso, wonder why Diaz wanted to go, competing with Gakpo in that position and overall being first choice in probably 80% of appearances, and getting 60% less wages…. madness. Guehi goes straight into our team instead of konate, that's not signed a deal and should have been pushed to be sold or rot in reserves in summer.

Semenyo and guehi SHOULD of been our transfers and something has changed drastically, hope guehi stays true to his word but why would he want to work under slot.

16 Jan 2026 13:00:14
Guehi is a very good player but he is not worth £250k a week in my opinion. That's a crazy amount of money to pay a 25 year old with one good season behind him. I really wanted us to sign Guehi but if City are going to offer him money like that, we shouldn't even try to compete. Also paying £30m+ for a player with less than 6 months on his contract is absolutely mental and not something I'll ever be on board with. Palace have been very unreasonable this winter by all accounts and in that case we've done the right thing by asking Guehi to wait for us and walking away.

If he'd rather chase the money at Man City immediately, well then good luck. No hard feelings. Once Guehi signs for City (looking very likely now), I would then like to think we'll move on though and rather than wait until the summer, look to sign our 2nd choice now. Joel Ordonez perhaps? It makes sense to wait for Guehi if he's our first choice. It doesn't make sense to wait for Ordonez though as he's not out of contract. I think he should've been lined up to sign on January 1st regardless of the Guehi situation. Hughes is slacking from the outside looking in.

Gakpo got his new contract and wage increase after being with the club and proving himself over time. This is generally how the club works, other than when a world class star joins. Guehi is a good player, but wouldn't come in on the top bracket wages (in my opinion). He would be given the opportunity to earn a new improved deal over time.

16 Jan 2026 13:06:48
Guehi is basically getting Palace a good transfer fee and getting himself a large wage and signing fee as if he was joining City on a free transfer. It'll cost City a lot but basically it's a complete win for Guehi and Palace. I'd rather spend the money on Jacquet now and get another suitable CB in during the summer than to blow all that money on Guehi. For me, it's a transfer that was more opportunistic than anything else.

Signing Guehi doesn't help us defend set piece situations (Palace are worse than us at them) he doesn't fit in the framework of what we've recruited before or what we've signed at youth level. He's good on the ball and he's homegrown, all it makes him is an upgrade on the likes of Joe Gomez, nice to have but not really a starter.

16 Jan 2026 13:07:14
Just as most modern day footballers aren't a patch on players past. Doesn't mean he isn't 1 of a few top cbs currently in world football. Prem proven means a lot too.

16 Jan 2026 13:08:32
And Gakpo should be on £250 a week for me.

16 Jan 2026 13:31:49
Mk - he'll be well worth the £250k per week to City if he gets them over the line in the title race and CL perhaps - my belief is if he goes there and with Semenyo hitting the ground running they'll reign Arsenal in! Meanwhile we scramble about with Chelsea, Newcastle, United etc with an injury prone back 4 to get enough points qualify for the CL.

16 Jan 2026 13:40:26
We will probably end up paying more in the summer for someone who will take far longer to settle in. The Guehi saga has been a shambles from start to finish. Guehi is a £60m player available for £30m.

16 Jan 2026 13:51:42
And there you have it Markp. A 60m player available for half that to replace the CB masquerading as a CB. I know he's available on a free in a couple of months but we need a proven CB now. In fact we need 2! City act whilst we didther around. Both AS and MG make their team stronger just like they would have ours.

Between them all at the helm they've made a total balls of this season. MG is a very very good CB and you'll look long and far to buy another at that money for that level. He'd be a mainstay for the next 4-5 seasons without any doubt. All this rubbish from others saying he's not good enough is just that. Rubbish.

16 Jan 2026 13:53:29
This season has been a complete shambles. Back to the doldrums for 25 years.

16 Jan 2026 14:13:41
No one complained about Gakpo's wages when he scored 18 goals from LW last season. Is the entire squad except Dom overpaid now? Y'know, given the poor performances most have had?

16 Jan 2026 14:15:04
The Guehi wage reflects his signing on bonus he'd get in the summer. They are paying him that now but spread over his contract.

16 Jan 2026 14:19:02
Agreed MK, only way i'd want us to be paying Guehi top wages is if we were gettinģ him for free.

16 Jan 2026 14:26:02
we wouldn't pay Guehi 250k but i bet we were willing to give Konate that, what has happened, we should have had at least one of Senyo or Guehi.

16 Jan 2026 14:26:13
First Semenyo and now Guehi is a kick in the boll*cks especially both going to City. Them two will take them up another level. Would have loved to of got them both. Something ain't right at the club. Massive loss losing out on them two. They would of made us a different beast in a time we're struggling.

16 Jan 2026 15:09:50
I'd love the people saying Guehi's too expensive to offer some alternative HG, Prem proven CB's that we could get, as we know we'll have to buy/ pay in the summer? Or will we be forced to give near this money to keep subpar konate and agree to his wage demands when we can't find anyone?

16 Jan 2026 15:27:37
Why is there such an uproar about the wages? Its not your money. Why don't people complain about Jones earning apparently 15k. I couldn't care less to be honest. We wanted Semenyo and Guehi. Both wanted us (apparently), and both are going to City.

Would. live to understand the reasoning behind these decisions. We put the effort in to get these guys, and then it falls apart, even after we were apparently their 1st choice. What changed their minds?

16 Jan 2026 17:13:36
Jlc I'm guessing slot ball for semenyo and 300grand a week for guehi. Out of the 2 I'm more pissed off about semenyo. For years we've debated who could be salahs replacement. Not many mentioned we're ever likely then along came semenyo who is made for the role.

Big strong fast direct and more importantly very interested and we walk away and allow him to go to our biggest rivals? Now that is incompetence.

16 Jan 2026 18:56:16
There's a saying Magico, that I feel. is so true. It goes something like "Guve me a team of grafters over a team of individuals" Both these guys wanted us, we were their 1st options. That alone should dictate that we should have tried harder, actually, should have tried everything to get them here.

But we didn't, why? Forget the money, these guys had the desire that any club could only dream for when they are looking for players, and we just turned our backs.
