After yesterday's match, do you guys think Klopp should use Trent in the midfield as how city uses KDB?

{Ed025's Note - he done well yesterday Grindstone but lets not get carried away with one performance, one swallow doth not a summer make and all that mate..

The problem with that is that we then have no right back in an already shaky defence.

OP, I think it worked for the exact game due to the way things were going and how Martinelli was their only outlet with Konate being able to shackle him for the most part. Not usre that scenario (s) will happen going forward so let's just pump the brakes and see what happens.

I think Trent will move into midfield but more like how City used Cancelo (and now use Lewis/ Stones) . Or how Arsenal use Zinchenko.

Basically a 4-3-3 that morphs into a 3-2-4-1 when one full back steps into midfield to make a double 6. The thing is though, City mainly use Ake/ Akanji as a 3rd centre back when this happens and Arsenal use White as the 3rd centre back.

So if we move ahead with Trent drifting into midfield we really need to consider signing a player like Gvardiol or Ndicka to play left back and become that 3rd centre back when Trent drifts into midfield. Or perhaps we could trial if Robertson can do it with some serious coaching in pre-season. Because when Trent drifts in for us it becomes a completely unbalanced 2-2-5-1 with Henderson pushing too wide on the right and Robertson far too high on the left which crowds out our actual attacking players and leaves us painfully short at the back.

I believe the main reason it fails for us is because Robbo is still bombing forward. So when Trent steps into midfield we are leaving 2 at the back with huge gaps down the sides. It's compounded by the fact our midfield isn't pressing effectively so teams go straight through us and isolate our 2 centre backs often in a 3v2 or a 4v2. Virgil, Matip and Gomez can't handle those situations after all their injuries. Konate is better than the others but his availability is an issue and he's still young. Hendo, Gini and Fabinho used to be a great screen which helped us in the past when leaving just 2 back but Gini is gone and Hendo/ Fabinho have suffered an awful loss of form which may be age or it may be training/ tactically related. Either way it is a problem. If you're not going to press hard as a team you can't leave 2 at the back. It's football, not rocket science. Either keep pressure on the ball or leave more defenders covering. City and Arsenal have opted to leave an extra centre back at the back, albeit disguised as a full back. We always used to opt for the high press. Now we're doing neither.

Just how I see it. I feel it's quite logical really.

Rigsby we still have no right back in a shaky defence.

Having Trent move into the middle from right back has been something we've been doing on and off for nearly 3 seasons and it hasn't worked. I missed the game, but by all accounts his passing range worked well there yesterday, although he got his assist from the right wing back position. I still don't think pulling him out of position is viable long term. Unless we want to do what Man City do and have our wingers provide the width.

imo, if we want to use him in midfield, then name in midfield, drop a midfielder and put Joe Gomez at right back.

I think it’s worth a go to try Trent in midfield and give Gomez, Ramsey and/ or Bradley a run at RB. If it gets a more defensively competent person in the back line and Trent does adapt to midfield so he can show his attacking talent more then it’s surely worth a go. Especially so this season where we can get away with experimenting a bit? Not as if the season can get much worse is it? ?.

7.) 10 Apr 2023 15:26:06
Exactly SR. We have a ready made RB who can play third CB on the right, in Joe Gomez. If memory serves right, Gomez has played considerably better as a RB than as a central CB at any time this season. He has the instincts to be able to play both positions. And Konate, as central CB, can cover him every time a ball is looped over his head, behind him.

Personally I maintain that TAA's best position is right wing back, with the rest of the team, particularly the right central midfielder, set up to cover his runs forward.

We only won, oh let's see. absolutely everything playing that way in a two season period.

But if we do want him in midfield, just play him as a midfielder with someone else at right back.
