Ed1 - what was the deal with the handball incident?
Originally was a free kick outside the box.
Then they reviewed for potential penalty
And what was the call from there? Seems like they determined it was in the box but not a deliberate handball?
So because they decided it wasn’t a deliberate handball it couldn’t be a penalty, which wasn’t the original call anyways, but then that also negated the original call of a free kick outside box for a handball?
You following lol.
{Ed001's Note - yeah they checked first to see if it was in the box. Then checked to see if it was actually a foul or not once they had ascertained it was either a penalty or nothing.}

It simply wasn't a handball. If anyone twa*s a ball at you from 3 feet away, and your arms are by your side, how can that be deemed to be deliberate?

Not that it matters now but it should really have been a corner.
05 Nov 2025 13:07:45
That’s what they decided though @Cooler. It was VAR used properly making the right decisions,
05 Nov 2025 13:10:58
No I didn't think it a handball either.

You are dead right Ernest, I was very confused as to why the ref gave a drop ball to Madrid afterwards. It wasn't a peno or a free but should have been a corner.
05 Nov 2025 14:07:43
It can’t be a corner if the ref initially gave a free kick tho.
05 Nov 2025 14:40:20
Indeed, Drac. It shouldn't have been the a handball to being with, in or outside the box.

I wonder what would have happened had the 'penalty been for Madrid n not us.
05 Nov 2025 16:21:38
I thought it would’ve been a harsh pen but once he’d given the free kick the only job VAR had was to ascertain whether it was inside or outside the box.
It’s not in VAR’s remit to review free kick decisions so they should’ve stayed out of that and just said it’s in the box so it’s a penalty.
It was probably the right decision in the end but the process wasn’t followed which leaves me a bit confused as to why VAR couldn’t intervene with Utd’s goal the other day where the ball didn’t go out? Or the plethora of other decision where they’ve said it’s not in VAR’s remit? They hide behind the process but last night showed they can go outside the process to get to the right decision if needed.

I didn’t think it was a handball for a pen either, but the original call was free kick outside the box.
In normal case, say if it was clearly outside the box, VAR normally wouldn’t intervene for that would they?
So it’s just the fact they reviewed a potential penalty that they then over-turned the original call which otherwise wouldn’t normally have been reviewed?
Ultimately, they haven’t over turned a penalty cos original call wasn’t a penalty.

@Strom, but it wasn’t, was it?
06 Nov 2025 01:33:24
VAR doesn't overturn original calls. It gives the referee a chance to overturn their call.
VAR is not a thing. It's just another referee.
06 Nov 2025 14:40:59
Wdw. your powers of observation are amazing. you're talent is wasted on here.
06 Nov 2025 19:03:04
@Strom, if you want to have a go at VAR or say that the match officials were biased against Liverpool then just say so. “What if” is just pointless as it didn’t happen.
06 Nov 2025 20:14:24
Wdw . im not having a go at VAR. but we all know Madrid would have got it . So you know what I was inferring to . so stop trying to be clever on a banter site ya sausage.

saw a good explanation - basically that the incident did occur in the box so that changed what VAR were reviewing, which in turn basically negated the original call
I can live with that. just kinda wish they'd explain that on the telly and in the stands!
