Bit harsh that, I get it Ramsay is likely not good enough, but saying I have better options to play is pretty demoralising. Listening to Quansahs interview about leaving as well, it was clear he didn't have much time for Slot. Not trying to bash him but when we've come from one of the greatest man managers in Klopp, you can see why Slot rubs some up the wrong way, I know the Dutch are honest but there's honest and then being a bit disrespectful I would have thought.
Arne Slot on Calvin Ramsay: "It's great for him where he is at the moment. Half a year ago he came back and was in the U21s. It's a big chance he's having now to come to first team. When someone is unlucky with injuries someone has a chance and that's the case with Calvin. But I still think I have better options to play, but when I was running out of options he's already shown he's good enough to be in and around our players. ".

Yeah terrible statement. Should have thought about that statement more. Even if it's the truth that got to hurt.

Presumably Calvin is most impressed by the fact he's seen as a barrel scrape, last chance saloon, everything else has been tried, good enough to be around but not really good enough to play…man management par excellence…not.

I don't think that's disrespectful at all. Pretty sure Ramsey knows where he is in the pecking order.

I thought the same when i heard it but i'm willing to write it off as an ESL thing as well as a cultural difference I think an English manager would have said something very similar but worded it a bit more positively/ tactfully like "Obviously he isn't currently our first choice, but he has proven himself good enough to be around the first team and in contention for a position should an opportunity present itself".
16 Jan 2026 11:25:22
I don't think it's disrespectful as well. I think we also need to bear in mind that English isn't Slot's first language so the phrasing of some things can be weird.

Yet another example of what I was saying yesterday. Ramsay was given a chance vs Palace in the League cup 3-0 loss at Anfield, and he was the only player to come away from that game with any shred of credit. Yet he hasn't been given a sniff since despite proving himself capable vs Premier League opposition. Slot is only prepared to use his squad in games he is deliberately trying to throw. We saw that with Plymouth last season and again with Palace this season.
I'm sure people will make more excuses for him like "second language" or "it's a Dutch thing" but ultimately, he's said what he's said. His actions speak louder than his words regardless. Gomez, Endo, Elliott, Chiesa, Quansah, Ramsay, Nunez, Morton, McConnell etc have all been left in the cold and/ or under utilised by Slot during his short time at the club. We might as well just disband the academy like Brentford did and cut the squad down to 18 players. Save the money.

How is it disrespectful? What's he supposed to say? "He's the best right back at the club"? He hasn't disrespected him, he's just said "I have better options". Hard to argue. Message to Calvin "get better and prove me wrong".
16 Jan 2026 11:34:37
He doesn't need it to be aired in public though, Rover.
16 Jan 2026 11:40:34
Who are these mystical better options? We only have frimpong, and he's not really a RB.

This is where and how Klopp built a unit of mentality monsters. Every player knew they had him supporting their back. And conversely, they were willing to fight for him and each other. A proper unit fighting for him and each other. And this is how Slot has reduced those mentality monsters to "fragile willows" who run around confused when under pressure or a goal behind. If you can't say something good about a player or an employee you don't wash it in public, you deal with it in private with the person concerned.
The most novice of manager or leader knows this. How's it going to motivate Ramsay to do better? He's been here 3 years and through a combination of injuries and lack of confidence by the manager, he's gotten absolutely nowehere. He'll be looking for the exit door, not staying extra hours after training to improve himself.
16 Jan 2026 12:23:07
Come on Ron you know that he doesn't need to say he's the best but you don't say what he said. What's the point of just dismissing someone like that it's not needed. No English isn't his first dialect but he knew what he was saying. Only my opinion I guess but cmon.
16 Jan 2026 12:54:08
Can you imagine Klopp saying that about a youth player? Slot starting to really irritate me.
16 Jan 2026 13:16:02
Klopp didn't pick Ramsey either. Perhaps, just perhaps Ramsey just isn't good enough to make it in the PL.
16 Jan 2026 13:57:31
Mk personally don't think any of Gomez, Endo, Elliott, Chiesa, Quansah, Ramsay, Nunez, Morton, McConnell were good enough to hold down regular starting places in the squad mate regardless of who is manager.
16 Jan 2026 16:21:36
Truth be told Ramsay isn't good enough WDW, but while he's in and around the first team there's better ways to motivate players. Granted we might not care what is said to Ramsay but maybe he's tight with some lads in the squad too and hearing that said about any player (if he's training hard and properly) isn't great motivation. Could have easily said he knows where he stands in the pecking order and is in and amongst things and needs to keep working had and prove himself and left it at that, same point but would have been a lot less damning than basically saying he's the last resort.
The Slot defenders have gone to a new extreme saying that's not disrespectful, his man management skills clearly have some issues if you ask me. After last year he's like a different man, he handled press conferences so well, the Trent Virgil and Salah situations perfectly, but I guess you only really see the true side of someone when they're up against it. Disappointing.
