In other sports cheating eg drug taking in Athletics medal gets given to runner up. Football should be no different.

But in cycling, the runners up did not get awarded the Tour de France after the "winners" got stripped of their titles.

Imo, we should look at the precedent set in football itself. Personally I feel that like with Juventus, the titled should be stripped from City but it should stop there. There shouldn't be any awarding of titles to the runners up.

Are you suggesting that everybody at Manchester City was taking performance enhancing drugs?

There is a very different scenario here.

Runner up may not have been winner if all the points associated with the City games were cancelled out in the table.

If you are reconstructing a table from 2009-2018 (the years the charges relate too) city win the league I think twice (maybe 3 depends how charges run into the years)?

Then I guess you could say but they drew strength and power and force from those years so strip points from following seasons.

It is impossible to reconstruct like that there would always be a valid argument.

Strip the title and leave at that if that is a punishment - no league winner!

@WDW - No, he isn't suggesting that. An ounce of context will tell you that.

This affects every league. If Man Cheaty get relegated, then there is a footballing powerhouse in the next league down. Unless they also start each season a large minus number of points, they would stop one team promoted that would otherwise have been promoted.

Personally I think they should be stripped of their titles and cups. A huge fine. Other PL teams will also go after them for lost revenues which will massively compound the fine. -70 points this season, -50 next, and -30 the year after.

And being relegated would give a slightly increased chance to survive to Spurs lmao.

If titles are taken off city and awarded to second team for the years in question we get 2 and united get 3.

27 Sep 2026 09:38:24
Can't be having that, Langland.

27 Sep 2026 10:09:49
Actually I stand potentially corrected as I asked chatgbt to take all of the Man City points away for 2007/8 to 2017/18 and recalculate the league (taking all those points points for teams gained against them too) and we would get 1 more league and Man United x 2. But let's be honest that is ridiculous I feel a little embarrassed I even did that ?

I really do think the only course is expulsion and a minimum time to return of say 5 years. If they take their 2 or 3 titles then they just become no champion league seasons!

I'm with Dracred.

27 Sep 2026 09:45:55
I think you'll find that inaccurate Langland. It's at best for United even, But per above it would be hard to do that without argument.

In serie A they actually stripped juve and gave it to third placed inter (Milan were caught cheating too) using the rationale that inter had actually earned it fairly so why should they not receive the prize they earned because those above them cheated?

Also if you totally remove the results of all city games from those season most of the league stays the same just minus city at the top.

27 Sep 2026 12:54:46
@Dracred on the Tour De France topic and I could be wrong but I think the reason no runner's up was given the Armstong titles was because some of them were also caught doping is well, I think.

On the titles to be given to runner's up, I perosonally don't want them and I want them to be Null & Void completely, just like in the VA-OM scandal of 1993 in France. That season no longer exists in their record books and no one realy brings it up either.

Also, I would like City to be sent to League 2 (if they will have them) with a mandatory 3 year sentence in thatn competition along with a 5 year transfer ban.

For me, they need the whole library thrown at them in order for the correct/proper precedent to be set, imo.

@Lowe1, I know what he meant and I was replying humorously on a banter site - just imagine that!
