Konate, increasingly likely to remain at Liverpool. The bad news just keeps coming.

Jesus. Were we the 2 o'clock in the morning option for Konate as no one else wanted him.
07 Apr 2026 03:00:16
Can't blame him if he has no better options and the club are doling out 250-300k a week basic contracts.
You'd think the club would have learned something after 30 years without a league title, and seeing the mistakes United have made in the last decade-plus. Would seem Edwards is being allowed to make the same moves he made in his last period with the club.

Whilst Konate has not been great, I don't think he is solely to blame. VVD has been poor, and the system we use often over exposes the two cbs.
In the right side, with the right manager and direction, IK will be just fine. Some of the stick is completely over the top.

Good news to me, he will be a good player once again in the right setup, plus he won't have to be expected to play every single game with Jacquet and Leoni back. Both him and Virgil could do with having some games off, and both of them could very much do with having some protection as well.

Have to disagree. He has been poor this season, but haven't most of our lads? We have a good bit to do in the summer, and potentially trying to get another centre back in seems like a nightmare, especially considering we are probably not going to get back a fully fit Jacquet until the start of next season, and it might take Leoni time to get back up to speed after his horrible injury.
Add to the fact we will probably see Jomez leave, it adds a layer of complexity. Konate has effectively had to deal with a conveyor belt of right backs beside him all season, which also creates tons of room for doubt, as you never know consistency beside you.
I think in general we may prep ourselves for another summer of change, tbh. Looking at the overall picture, we have Mo leaving, potentially Robbo and Joe too, all players who are standard setters and have been about for our period of success. You maybe add to that reduced game time for Ali and a potential change in manager/sporting director, and we could once again be in for a bit of an unsure summer, especially with the added complexity of the World Cup.
Very interesting times ahead for the Red Men and a level of uncertainty I haven't felt around the club since before Kloppo came.

It's been his worst season by a mile, and he does have the raw attributes, but he should be coming into his prime and maturing rather than getting worse. It's a concern but perhaps better than him leaving for nothing.
07 Apr 2026 09:54:18
@Red_Flyer, after the 30 years when we "didn't win a title", we actually won 2 of them and a CL and a World Club Cup.
07 Apr 2026 10:07:02
Konate is incredibly poor. Keeping him makes zero sense whatsoever. Liability.
07 Apr 2026 11:03:37
I really hope not. We need to get rid of him, not reward mediocrity with a bumper new deal!
07 Apr 2026 14:06:28
Konate is a good defender, he's had a harder year than anyone, Jota, his father.
He'll improve next season under a proper manager with a fresh mind. The tactics don't suit anybody so everybody looks worse.
07 Apr 2026 15:19:17
WDW, yes, you are correct, sir. Clearly, we found a successful formula on and off the pitch with FSG and Klopp in charge. We were years ahead of United on and off the pitch. That has been squandered in a single season.
So yes, we won titles, but we now look as far from winning more titles as United have in recent seasons.
There is no question the club is now being run poorly and unable to make what some might say ruthless decisions to ensure success on and off the pitch. We've lost our way big time this season and I don't see how anyone can argue contrary to that.

It's actually quite difficult to gauge how good or bad Konate actually is as a defender when he has been consistently partnered with VVD for the last few years, who has been arguably the best CB in world football since he arrived at Anfield. I take the point that nobody this year is shining, and overall it has been a difficult year for Konate.
Only because I think we have other areas to prioritise this summer, I am in favour of renewing his contract, although the rumoured figures of 250,000 to 300,000 must be a joke, because there are very few defenders worth that money.
07 Apr 2026 16:38:35
I would not mind Konate. VVD has been way off, so Konate has been found out.
07 Apr 2026 19:08:27
He's been found out, so we should offer him a new deal? Virgil will more than likely leave at the end of next season, and Konate would then be the senior CB. Hopefully we have another Virgil next to him, so he won't continue to be "found out."
07 Apr 2026 22:06:23
Konate is a liability. He has actually got worse since we first signed him. Let Haaland run across him to kill the game last week. Virgil, struggling with his own game, has not been able to babysit him this season.
