The idea of Gakpo leaving shouldn’t be a surprise.
1) FSG have always been about the club balancing the books, so selling him to recoup some Barcola funds makes sense to the model and allows them to go after a RW option.
2) Rio & Munoz for backup left side.
3) Sounds like player might want to move.
He has been one of our better players in the last two games but that wouldn’t be too difficult lol.

You do realise Gakpos sale will go towards Minteh or Sarr. So not exactly money off.
30 Aug 2026 00:40:10
Bighairyape, I did say the club would go for a RW option, but as the club has to take on more debt to do that, recouping funds from Gakpo sale will reduce that.

Sell a poorer player to get a better player. The way football has worked since the end of time. Do we all wanna see Gakpo out on the right every week? Does one, albeit lovely, assist mask the rest of his performance? Two months ago Halo would have been one of the first names on people's lips to move on.
I get the panic over the squad weakness, but with Barcola coming in, it makes perfect sense.

Replace a 27 year old Gakpo with a 28 year old Sarr, no thanks. Play Szoboslai at right, no thanks. Keep playing Macallister and Frimpong and expecting something different, no thanks. Macallister has no legs and Frimpong just isn't good enough.
The past few years our transfers where 12/18/24 months in the making. They where measured, decisive players being identified, followed and then eventually but not always moves made to get them in.
Now it's almost impulsive, making bids for wingers then quickly moving on. It's panic buying at its best.
Hopefully if Gakpo does go we can address the elephant in the room and get a dcm and a right back. Might just have to go with the 3 wingers and use Chiesa/Ekitike when he's back and can't belive I'm saying this. Frimpong in the more advanced role until the Jan but more likely next summer.
29 Aug 2026 23:22:29
Gakpo is 27/28.

Could be worse, look at Spurs. On another note Newcastle have brought well.

There are good players around if you have the right scouting and transfer set up. Not every player has to be £80m plus, despite the current madness in the market.
Look to the past, we've picked up players for fullback like Arbeloa and Finnan, who weren't massively high profile or expensive, but were very good players.
Only wish we had that type of market intelligence right now.
{Ed666's Note - Munoz seems to be an intelligent buy that’s inexpensive? JJ looks promising also?
29 Aug 2026 22:56:19
Ratiu at less than £20m for the rb role who can also cover rw is a great opportunity. He's off to Fulham though.
30 Aug 2026 06:52:24
Could be better too.... Look at Hull.
30 Aug 2026 11:39:29
Munoz and Jacquet both look pretty good. Both fairly high profile young players for France and Spain that we did well to get, Munoz had the buyout which made it easier, Jacquet fee was thought to be really high when it was announced in Jan, maybe less so now.
29 Aug 2026 16:55:30
Our fullbacks are s***. Cannot cross for s***.
Kerkez is Alberto Moreno 2.0.
Frimpong is genuinely 1 of 1 - and somehow not in a good way.
We went from Robbo and Trent to this.
What the f*** happened?
Rant over. (And out.)
29 Aug 2026 13:27:40
Frimpong. I think I would just prefer Araujo at RB now.
29 Aug 2026 19:40:40
Sob for me, think AI will have seen it also.
29 Aug 2026 13:25:37
The new narrative now is we've "too many attacking players".
What exactly are these "Attacking" players creating? How many goals are they scoring?
A good few players better pull their socks up and quite quickly. Some better run, tackle and offer a lot more. We've been let down by journeymen in charge of transfers but there's a few that I stated before, too soft and I don't like their character for this football club.
We've the highest wage bill in the country. Certain players are absolutely going to be exposed now more than ever on their huge earnings. No more hiding behind a coach.

I cruelly think today highlighted how badly we need more options up top. Isak needs a challenger and we need another rw.
I thought on the whole the performance was ok. Second half, I thought we were in control. We got unlucky with the pen, and I think Jacquet was tiring and about to be subbed, which allowed Williams to get the Rik on him for the pen. The balance looked better with Macca sitting.
Munoz is clearly a talent and for me should be a rw starter.
Motw evidence that Rio is not yet ready.
Frimpong is not great, and I never thought I would say this, but we would be better off with Szob at rb.
Isak was the biggest concern, though. Not sure how we get the best out of him.
Wirtz, I thought, was our best player today, pressed well, making tackles and involved in our goals. He is so much better when he has players looking to get in behind to play forwards too.
Trey looked composed too when he came on.
{Ed025's Note - i must have watched a different game MOT..
30 Aug 2026 07:02:48
Ed025 I thought as performance that was better than any league match I watched us from last season (maybe with exception of Arsenal game). There are things I like and patterns of play that you can see progress.
I still think this team is too nice, but I thought it was notable that everyone seemed to be putting more tackles in and playing more agreessive. We really did control the second half, but we can disagree
{Ed025's Note - was it really MOT?, i thought the second half was slightly better than the first (which was pathetic) mate, its ok to look for positives but there was not much there for me im afraid, Forest could have been 4 up at half time and for me are just a bunch of grafters who were taken to school by Leeds twice last week, any decent Liverpool side should be wiping the floor with them...but of course thats just my opinion
29 Aug 2026 16:35:31
We lack real leaders. Too much softness.
Dom is highly sus as a character. Some of the antics towards fans. He should be nowhere near the Captaincy. He's busy talking pictures with Gerrard "comparing goals".
The lad isn't a patch on Gerrard. He needs humbled quickly. Sob should be tried on the right wing.
If he doesn't want to take on instructions and be tactically disciplined what's he offering to the team without hindering it? He's not good enough for a team to be built around him. If Wirtz is to succeed, Sob needs to take a back seat and work on his game.
29 Aug 2026 16:59:07
I'd stick Szoboszlai at Right Back.
{Ed666's Note - not buy a right back?
29 Aug 2026 19:42:02
Can't see that happening Ed, unfortunately!
{Ed666's Note - let’s have some faith..3 players in 3 days not much of an ask? ?
29 Aug 2026 20:08:13
I have faith but it's always unfounded. ?
30 Aug 2026 09:48:27
I think rb is Szobs position, he just hasn't realised it yet.
30 Aug 2026 08:45:43
Rather but midfielders who can actually defend Ed. None of our soft lads can.
