I remember Benitez wanted Barry to partner Gerrard. Funded by selling Alonso.

Alonso was so much better Barry god knows what Benitez was thinking with that one. Alonso was world class Barry good player but totally different level for me. I did not want us to sign Milner but he proved me wrong more than any player we have signed that I was not sure of.
Loved Milners input in the team and I think he deserves to break the record what he is obviously going to do this season.

More Liverpool fans than would admit it subsequently were totally onboard with replacing Alonso with Barry at the time.
Spent most of 07/ 08 reading about how Alonso was out of form, injury prone and we didn't need him because we could play Mascherano and Gerrard in central midfield.

As far as i remember, Gerrard recommended Barry to Rafa, and was wanted to play on the left side.

I was on holiday in Lucca when Alonso was sold and it ruined a whole day of my holiday. I felt lost and couldn't fathom how we had let him go.
The Italian papers were full of Aquilani talk over the next couple of days and they couldn't believe he was going to Liverpool.
Rafa did some genuinely crazy stuff but he did have to work under a pair of idiots.
