If Salah was English, imagine how many more goals he’d have gotten! Man handled weekly and just got told to play on, no foul. If he had the refereeing protection of Saka et al he’d have scored even more. Man was so good they had to handicap him.

{Ed666's Note - Don’t get me teary eyed mate. Still think he had one more season in him at Liverpool.

06 Sep 2026 17:40:31
Thought exactly the same watching this game. Now Saka has every foul given that he asks for.

06 Sep 2026 17:46:44
You could have 2 Sakas on every pitch and they wouldn’t get anywhere near the goals tally of Mo Salah.

06 Sep 2026 17:52:05
It was time for him to go. Not sure what not being English has to do with anything.

{Ed666's Note - was it time for him to go Rome? What makes you say that Rome?

06 Sep 2026 17:43:03
You and me both Ed666, I'm still upset about the way the club ended his time. He deserved much better.

{Ed666's Note - much much better mate. Hence my annoyance with Hughes

06 Sep 2026 18:04:06
Ed666, he was a shadow of the player he once was. I could never see him being happy starting 20 games a season. He would certainly be well off being able to start every game. Everyone's time has to come to an end. His time had come.

{Ed666's Note - I respect your opinion Rome but 7 goals and 7 assists in a system that was alien to him isn’t a bad return. He would have had plenty of appearances on the right wing this season and probably would have been interchanged with Munoz & Ping Pong to preserve him. Coupled with a system that meant others would have done the donkey work for him, a system that would have afforded him a lot more space and didn’t mean he was receiving the ball on the half way line with 11 defenders in front of him..I think he’d of done ok. But life’s about opinions mate so we can agree to disagree.

06 Sep 2026 18:35:53
I agree with Rome on this one. Not only has his ability and work rate at the top level gone, he wouldn't have been happy to be a squad player. Iraola wants his wingers to press and track back and that's beyond Salah now unless it was for 60 minutes.

We all know what Salah is like when he gets subbed. I think it would have made Iraola's job a lot harder. That's a problem he doesn't need. Love Salah. Absolute legend, but it was time.

06 Sep 2026 18:26:17
Absolutely, Ed. That's why I enjoy coming on this site. We all have differing opinions, otherwise this site wouldn't be what it is.

{Ed666's Note - thanks mate yes we welcome all opinions on here apart from pro Man united ones ?

06 Sep 2026 19:00:01
Where I am insistent that my opinion is right, is when it comes to Man U, Ed!

{Ed666's Note - Bruno criticism is more than welcome mate and those posts get posted immediately

06 Sep 2026 19:17:29
Look at the dominant teams Liverpool in 70s/80s or ManU in 90s/00s... They knew when it was time to move the aging superstar on. I think Mo had reached that time, his legs were going. Sad but c'est la vie...

06 Sep 2026 19:35:44
First, Salah is hardly setting the world alight at Trabzonspor in a much less competitive league.

Second, we should not be carrying any passengers this season. It is going to be bloody hard work knocking Arsenal off their perch.

Third, the only question we should ever ask is would Bob Paisley have kept him? Our barometer should always be our most successful manager, should it not?

06 Sep 2026 20:12:24
Has anyone seen the clip of pennant giving Hughes loads? Thinks he's a bit p*ssed, saying how he'd slap him if he was in the room with him.

06 Sep 2026 22:08:19
Adore Salah, but let's not pretend he wasn't good for a dive every so often. :P

06 Sep 2026 19:29:51
Do u think ed666 salah would've accepted being rotated or left out of team? Footballing wise I would've kept him another season as well, as he couldve covered striker and no.10 positions as well as usual rw spot for us.people will say his wages too big for that but I disagree, he would've played plenty and his work ethic off field worth its wright in gold for new signings and young lads.

If u factor in we got no transfer fee either.
The only reason I would be against it is I don't think mo would accept not playing all the time and i think he would go straight to media which would be a unwanted problem to new manager.maybe clean slate is for the best in long run

{Ed666's Note - I would strongly reccomend you reading Melissa Reddy’s book on Salah and the subsequent podcasts she’s done on the book. She says and I’m paraphrasing that Mo wanted to stay till the end of his contract but it was one or two people above Slot that wanted him gone. She also said that it was a misnomer that his chagrin was with Slot it was higher up than that. He didn’t feel wanted so he left. As to weather he would have reacted adversely to being rotated or left out who knows but I’d like to think he’d of shown some humility in that regard. All I know is I would have loved to see him under AI and see what he’s got left in the tank. There’s many that would disagree with me and that’s ok maybe I’m being nonsensical and sentimental but maybe I’m right?

06 Sep 2026 19:34:15
Ed666 Rome I would say he was better than Gakpo last season and look at the change in him already this season and still not fully up to speed.

06 Sep 2026 21:06:42
Totally agree Ed. 1 more at least. He was getting double and triple teamed last season and still posted decent numbers. Him must being on the pitch created space for others. So sad he's gone. That golden era has truly ended. We were so lucky to have him

{Ed666's Note - Mane, Bobby and The Egyptian King. I will never forget Flidby. What a time it was to be alive. We were so unlucky not to add more premierships and champion leagues. Gets me so sentimental. Let’s hope Barcola and Isak can bring back those halcyon days .

06 Sep 2026 21:21:48
Salah would have cooked in this Iraola system with the required safguards, Ed666. I fully agree with you on that.

And with the depth we have now at RW, he wouldn't have to play every game and would be fresh for the bigger games, like you said.

That being said at some point, all love stories end badly (as the French say) so you know, might as well just do it now.

{Ed666's Note - It did end badly though Oli, he got shoved out of the club he loved. No farewell party at Anfield can paper over that crack mate. I concur Salah would have done good numbers this season in a system that would have assisted him and I’m willing to die on that hill.

06 Sep 2026 22:48:59
Paisley wouldn't have kept him StEt. I would have, though. He'd have easily scored 20+ goals imo if here this season. Iraola and him would have been great. Anyway. Not to be.

06 Sep 2026 23:03:19
I suppose the fact that we're all debating whether he had one more season shows he left whilst still on his game.
It would have been sad to watch him deteriorate and lose his place in the team. This way we'll always have the "what might have been". In a way, that's a good way to leave.

The difficult thing would have been 'what if he'd had another amazing season like last time he got a new deal? Do you give him another 2-3 years on astronomical wages?'
Very difficult call.

On balance I think he went at the right time and Iraola didn't have to make the difficult decision.

{Ed666's Note - Good post that Ron

06 Sep 2026 22:43:29
Agreed ED0666. Salah would have proved his worth this season without doubt. We've nobody better there anyway! I cannot see how they didn't leave the contract play out. Zero sense in that for me especially with no replacement secured.

{Ed666's Note - I agree with you on all points Shankley. Maybe they wanted to save circa half a million pounds a week and spread that salary between the new players. Hopefully it will come out one day?

06 Sep 2026 23:28:15
I don't get the reference to nationality. The lad did himself no favours earlier on in his career with some diving, so it might have swayed the ref opinion as it did with several other players. Still, he was manhandled and taken out regularly, such was his talent, but the best all have to put up with it.

Maradona sticks out to me as he was still class with leg breakers on shabite pitches, so I can't have much sympathy for pampered players.

{Ed666's Note - Forgive me if I’m wrong OP but I think the OP is alluding to cultural bias which may or may not be true.

07 Sep 2026 00:38:24
I was really disappointed with Salah last season. He was badly struggling for form, as were the whole team in truth, and he was rightly dropped.

Rather than handling it professionally and knuckling down he went whinging to the press about being thrown under the bus. Now, he might have been correct, but by running to the press he brought unwanted speculation and added more pressure to an already difficult season.

The problem is, when a player as high profile as Mo Salah starts mouthing off to the press, it’s big news. That will then lead to more dissenting voices in the dressing room as any other player who might be annoyed about playing time sees Mo Salah do that, so thinks that’s ok and jumps onboard with him.

Before you know it you have dressing room divisions as players think moaning about being dropped or not played is the norm.

Salah should’ve spent his last 2 seasons bringing through the next crop so he could leave us in a good position. Instead he made it all about him and made an already difficult season worse.

For me, he had to go. We all love him but we can’t allow a player to do what he did without consequence, no matter if he was right or wrong. There’s no room for sentiment, Mo was bang out of order and made it very difficult for the manager to do his job.

{Ed666's Note - if I say anything I’ll get in trouble ?

07 Sep 2026 07:00:15
You’re surmising that Mo spoke out because he was dropped. I think he was dropped for speaking up behind closed doors. One thing is for sure: him speaking out was the start of the downfall of the three clueless ones. Mo speaking up let the fans know that players weren't happy too, probably as important as finishing in the European spots.

07 Sep 2026 07:55:36
I'm with the Ed on this too many people on here just look in front of them rather than the big picture. How does a consummate pro like Salah go from breaking records for goals and assists, player of the year and MVP to suddenly bad overnight.

This coincides with Mo's impeccable fitness. Ironically this "downfall" occurred whilst the rest of the squad where in the same seismic downfall and at the same time Slot decided to abandon logic, tactics and training. So I'm sorry Rome you're talking s***e

07 Sep 2026 08:50:18
Frode, let's agree to disagree and don't say I'm talking s****, and prefix it with saying sorry.

Salah's form fell off a cliff last season, maybe some of it was down to Slot, but the biggest part of it was down to Salah. I maintain that I don't think he would've been happy playing a bit part, and no one can say with certainty he would have "cooked it" under Iraola.

The man's gone, let's cherish the memories that we have. But, I'm grateful I don't have to watch one of our all time greats get groans when he lost the ball and failed to deliver a pass, which was happening with regularity.

07 Sep 2026 09:01:53
Scouse, and that is why Mo will always be one of us, imo.

Salah loved the club so much that he saw the house burning behind the scenes and rather than keep quiet and act "selfish" (like many accuse him of till this day), he pulled the alarm and let everyone know what these 3 bozos were about trying to push him out.

N btw, it was Slot who didn't want Salah to get a new deal. Ed01 said so in a response to the question itself.

Salah took the stick publicly all on his back and if it meant that his desire to end his career at LFC meant he left early so the club could progress and get this band of incompetents out then, he was good with that.

A true gentleman who stood on business for the good of the club.

And an even greater legend, imo.

07 Sep 2026 09:40:26
Players can suddenly get worse seemingly overnight when they are 33/34.

07 Sep 2026 09:55:55
Absolute nonsense riosstepover. Seriously still up hughes & slots arse, those 2 almost destroyed the club. Salah was 100% right all along. And the man has 4 goals & 1 assist in 3 Turkish Superliga games without a pre-season, what more can he do to be pulling up trees st.etienneamen? Lol

07 Sep 2026 10:42:43
Maybe a couple of ‘decent’ seasons in an 8 year spell of incredible numbers and endurance.
How often did he speak out of turn? Once, maybe twice? Compared to 8 years of unbelievable professionalism and undoubtedly growing the club’s worldwide profile and appeal.
One of the greatest Mo. ❤️

Back to the original point, I believe Mo was a victim of his own success because he would just play on, he didn’t really go down easily.

He was as strong as an ox when on the ball. Real Madrid knew this, that's why they had to virtually rip his arm off at the start of the Champions League final and take him out.

07 Sep 2026 14:00:02
"And the man has 4 goals & 1 assist in 3 Turkish Superliga games without a pre-season".

Wow, ArneSlotsBarber. And here I was thinking Mo was washed and needed to go cos his form had fallen off a cliff.

Okay, more like fallen off a couple of stairs, more like it.
