We definitely need to get back to the heavy metal football. Second half yesterday showed that it works. Fair enough we might get caught by good players on the break but the way we pressed and attacked yesterday shows Klopps old style still works. If we have a good transfer window there is no reason we ain't challenging again next year

I didn't see that at all to be honest mate. It just felt like Arsenal bottled it to me. I was absolutely gobsmacked with how they set up 2nd half. They essentially left Jesus on halfway, and then sat 10 men behind the ball and just lumped it forward at every opportunity. We did squeeze up high and start tackling with more bite, but I thought they just let us more than us pressing particularly well. They made no effort to push out or retain the ball. It was like they thought they could defend a 2-1 lead for 45 minutes and when it backfired late on and Firmino scored, they'd already hooked their game changers who could wrestle back control for them.

I would certainly not be reading anything into that 2nd half performance. Arsenal played the whole half like there was 3 minutes left and they just needed to park the bus. I'll take the point all day but we were shocking. A lucky goal got us back into it with Henderson's awful shot falling to Salah to score a ricochet, and then Arsenal got it all wrong from there. If they'd carried on the way they were playing they'd have pummeled us.

I've seen too many false dawns this season. I'm not getting drawn in again ?.

I don't think it'll be as mad (exciting and as enjoyable as it was) as yesterday, that was most coaches worst nightmare, like basketball at times.
The original heavy metal is dead, the more controlled fury of 19/ 20 still resonates with me.
Quick, slow, quick, quick, slow.
Said the actress to the Bishop.
Mane as the front press leader is definitely missed, his aggression and tenacity to take the fight to the opposition.
Klopp should do a Shankly, have them all eating raw steak before games lol.

Yeah the original Heavy Metal football died with the loss to Madrid, and for good reason. What it evolved into was arguably the best football any Liverpool side has ever played, along with the most dominant league season from a title winner in history. I say it almost every day on this site seemingly, but I still have no idea what they were thinking. Maybe that style did burn out our players very quickly, who knows? If that was the case, then Klopp should have been moving them on after a few years, take the money and buy replacements, same Paisley did. Instead, he gave them all huge long term contracts.

Mane is a massive miss. Apart from destroying most full backs his work rate was second to none and mostly unnoticed

{Ed001's Note - but he wanted to go.}

Jeez can people get it into their heads that Mane wanted to leave LFC, he’d had enough he wanted a new challenge and more money.
Just let it go were you

He wanted to go and he wasn’t the player he was. It was time for him to move on. Selling Mane was never the problem.

In Buck Rodgers final full season at LFC 2014-2015, out of 38 full games played that premier league season we ended up with 18 victories home and away in the league, we require Six wins from our final Nine games to equal Bucks victory success in his final full season as he was sacked on the 04 October 2015, and Jurgen "King" thankfully took over on the 08 October 2015, and may he stay for many a more year.

We also need three more defeats this season to equal Bucks total losses that season 2014-15 which was 12 premier defeats, we currently sit on nine defeats for the season so far and counting!

Selling Mané (who was on a slow but steady decline) was not the problem. The problem is we haven't gotten the goals, the aggression, the pressing and the tracking back from that left wing side. Whether it is Diaz, Jota or Gakpo who play on that side, we haven't gotten the same kind of production of the above factors that we used to. You can use excuses like injuries and "new to the team and country" and all that, but that does not erase the fact that we still didn't get what we used to get from there.

9.) 10 Apr 2023
10 Apr 2023 16:06:58
Of course Mane wanted to leave, so selling him was not a problem.
But he had an inherent understanding of the front press, be it from his Southampton background or just his football intelligence.
Neither Gakpo or Nunez are on that level yet, at one point yesterday you could see Salah frantically waving the others forward to try to close Arsenal down deep in their own half.
Mane would have already be at their throats.
Diaz has it though imo, his return will be a boost in due course.

MK Scouser - I can see where you're coming from with your post, but I would argue that if our first goal was lucky as you stated, then the same can be said for theirs. Henderson's 'deflection' for Salah to score was not really so different to the ricochet of Virg to Martinelli for theirs.

11.) 10 Apr 2023
10 Apr 2023 16:52:26
Mane hasn’t destroyed a full back for about 3 years now. There is a reason why he was shifted to the centre and Diaz brought in. Even if he had stayed, his days as a winger were done.

Totally agree The juicer and that was my point. Mane going is going to take time to replace as will Salah Firminho and co

Ed001 he did want to go and no problem with that it was the fact in replacing these great players is the hardest part and Mane is pretty close to irreplaceable in my opinion

{Ed001's Note - he was done though and he has not been the same player this season. It was the right time for him to go.}

Yeah that's fair KBL. They were all over us but luck played a part in their first goal for sure.

Time for people to stop going on about Mane. He was brilliant for us but wanted to go and it was time for him to go anyway given that he is getting older. I’d love to have Barnes, Dalglish and Fowler up front still but it’s not going to happen.

16.) 10 Apr 2023
10 Apr 2023 18:09:19
Absolutely the right move for the club and the player for Mane to go: he was exhausted physically and mentally. Way easier on both fronts to play for a dominant team in their league…though it didn’t work out that way. We miss the Mane of a few years ago, not his present self. Same is true of Bobby and Mo: they are not what they once were. But that doesn’t devalue their service: I judge Rush, Barnes, Whelan, Hansen etc on their best days…not when they were doing their best when their knees had gone. I don’t put Jordan in that bracket as, despite his decline in athleticism, he still defines the big games. He is a way better player than people understand: he plays a huge part in the build of every goal we get, always makes the correct pass, and is our greatest leader since Mad Graeme. Makes my top 4 of all-time LFC midfield everyday.

{Ed025's Note - big call that mate..

17.) 10 Apr 2023
10 Apr 2023 18:48:48
Whether Arsenal bottled it or not is a different debate. The fight and attitude we showed after the Trent elbow is what we used to show every game. As fans that's what we ask for. Neither mind the result.

10 Apr 2023 19:53:16
Thomas Mane scored the same amount of goals last season from LW as he did when moved to CF (8 apiece from 17 games in each position)
Diaz scored 4 goals in 13 games from LW
Maybe it’s just your way to undermine players when they leave for whatever reason ?‍♂️

Mane wanted to leave and good luck to him and Diaz is a great player to replace him. I only hope he has a CL and PL medal like Mane has ?.

19.) 10 Apr 2023
10 Apr 2023 19:55:03
Best football we have ever seen you must be a young man because Liverpool in the 70s/ 80s played some of the best football i've ever seen from LFC check out terry mc's goal against spurs from their corner with three passes it was in spurs net .

Please don't under estamate LFC teams of gone by years mate learn our history football was not invented in the 2000s you know woolback.

20.) 10 Apr 2023
10 Apr 2023 20:23:01
Mane already got replaced with Diaz and we have missed him and his pressing and high energy (same things that Mane gave) this season. Oh, and Bayern are now figuring out the hard way that it was the right move for us to let him go and they are now dealing with a dud so good luck to them.

As for the game last night, I don't think there was any luck with the first goal. The move that created the chance was our best move of the whole half. oh and if people want to say that Hendo's touch was lucky then, you can say the same for the slip by Robbo and the pin ball show with VVD that led to their first goal. Keep it consistent, pls.

All in all, Arsenal played for only 35 mins. You will NOT beat ANYONE away ffrom home let alone a meat-grinder that Anfield is vs a wounded LFC team that has the medals to prove their elite status. NO WAY! . All we did was up the tempo a bit, played quicker and got our ballers on the ball more with the crowd fired up and BANG, Arsenal wilted from 35 mins on and we never let up. Arteta also showed hiw inexperience cos he had NO way of countering what Klopp was doing to him tactically. If anyone was lucky, it was Arsenal cos they got battered for 60mins and should have conceded more, IMO.

21.) 10 Apr 2023
10 Apr 2023 20:52:56
Please do not label Mane a dud. He was on the decline yes but he still had more fire than most of our players this season. He lost some pace but he never stopped working, had the dog in him and could finish a chance right till the end. he's been injured this season. To call a Liverpool legend a dud is just pure disrespect.

Redwills, take a chill pill, bro. I love Mane to death and respect him as a gem of a human being WAY more than the absolute legend he is as a footballer for LFC and Senegal. I will NEVER call Mane a dud. In fact, I would nearly fight anyone who disrespects him and his football career.

The "dud" comment was used cos it is the way many of the Bayern fans now see him as. Prolly should have added context to the word when I used it so I get t your comment.

25.) 11 Apr 2023
11 Apr 2023 06:48:32
11 goals and 5 assists in 23 games (pre injury) is not a dud of a player.

IR, many Bayern fans have been unimpressed with him regardless of those numners cos IMO, the guy he was supposed to replace in Lewandowski. He has been struggling all season and it came to a head a couple of weeks ago when many are getting fed up with him That's what many of their fans are saying. You can send those stats to them cos clearly, you know more than they do about their own club and the expectations required from their players.
