Another one of those top ten, best ever lists, as I sit here twiddling my thumbs. Who are your best LFC players, over the past fifty years, as that's as far back as I go? Mine are, in no particular order.
Keegan
Dalglish
Barnes
Gerrard
Torres
Souness
Van Dijk
Suarez
Hansen
Alisson
Really struggled, when leaving out probably my favourite ever player, Ray Kennedy and Rushie was also in there until I realised there was no way that I could leave Alisson out.
Torres may be out of place on some people's lists and obviously he didn't win as much with us as others on the list but on his day, he is probably the most exciting player that I have ever seen in the red shirt.
Best manager has to be Sir Bob.

I’m quite old and remember and agree with a lot of those but I’d have to fit Salah in there!
23 Jun 2025 18:13:07
Rush simply can’t be left out of top 10 list!
23 Jun 2025 18:21:16
Okay so I only go back 35 years and its only fair that I stick to those years, even though I was fairly well educated on the 80’s I wasnt there for any of them as a supporter.
In no particular order as Id be here all night otherwise.
Fowler
Rush
Mcmanaman
Gerrard
Alonso
Macallister
Agger
Bobby Firmino
Van Djik
Luis Garcia.
23 Jun 2025 18:22:15
I can only go back 30 or so years
Gerrard
Fowler
Salah
Torres
Hyppia
Alonso
Mcmanaman
Suarez
Firmino
Coutinho
Special mentions
Berger, Sturridge, Hamann, Henderson.
23 Jun 2025 18:24:48
Torres aka El Sulk over Rush haha… I’d have Fowler and Owen over Torres too.
23 Jun 2025 18:34:13
Great move! I'm slightly younger than you so my watching Liverpool years start in the early/ mid-80s. As a result, sad as it is, I can't include King Kenny. My first watched game was Hysel and Kenny took over soon after that game so I only ever knew him as a player-manager rather than a player.
Gerrard
Salah (can't believe you left out the Egyptian King! )
Suarez
Barnes
Alonso
VVD
Hansen
Fowler
Alisson
Rush
Very skewed towards attackers, but makes sense as they contribute most of the moments that live in the memory!
Very close behind would be Mane and Firmino (the best attacking trio in the world, arguably, for 2-3 seasons), Beardsley, Torres, Reina/ Bruce as backup keeper and more I could go on about for ages!
Happy with my selection. Manager right now would have to be Klopp (I was too late to see Sir Bob) but maybe in a few years it will be Slot (hopefully the current incarnation of Sir Bob! )

No salah? No Rush? Interesting.
23 Jun 2025 18:44:54
My picks in no order.
Robbo
Dalglish
Barnes
Gerrard
Salah
Rush
Van Dijk
Suarez
Hansen
Alisson.
23 Jun 2025 18:52:06
Dalglish
Salah
Keegan
Suarez
Barnes
Souness
Van Dijk
Suarez
Hansen
Alisson
Manager would have to be Bill Shankly as, without him, nothing that came after would have happened.
And, on that note, a special mention for Geoff Twentyman, the legendary scout!
23 Jun 2025 18:55:58
In no particular order
Salah
Fowler
Virgil
Xabi
Ali
Mcmanaman
Gerrard
Barnes
Hyppia
Robbo
Torres would have to top the honourable mentions list, and honestly I would have to put Trent close behind.
Obviously I love patrik Berger but I find it hard to put him in a top 10. I am not old enough to have seen rushie in his prime, either.
23 Jun 2025 19:09:40
Salah
Fowler
Virgil
Xabi
Rush
Hansen
Gerrard
Barnes
Suarez
Special mentions to Bobby, Molby, Torres, McDermott, Souness
Manager Paisley but Klopp was a belter too.
23 Jun 2025 19:11:01
I missed Dalglish too, it’s hard to pick only 10.
23 Jun 2025 19:22:42
Hello Leedm,
We must be twins?
Best Manager ever Bill Shankly- the man who delivered Liverpool Football Club from its Womb! and the rest is just glorious History!
Most successful manager- Bob Paisley who would be the first to agree with above, Shanks laid the foundations, Bob put the Roof on!
As for the List, that would be endless.
23 Jun 2025 19:36:24
God
Gerrard
Rush
Barnes
McManaman
Redknapp
Sissoko
Mane
Alisson
Bobby
Not a best list just my favourite players. The list would be different if I could include players before I started supporting. I would also have loved to have seen Barnes and Rush live in their prime.
On a side note I remember having a pleasant back and forth with Ed001 when we were going for a new keeper. I thought Oblak had a slight edge over Alisson. Ed was adamant that Alisson was the answer. Was never as glad to be wrong.

For me one of the most under-rated, over-looked Liverpool players over the past 40/ 50 years (jeez that’s hard to write! ) is Ronnie Whelan.
Played across midfield, weighed in with goals and when Souness needed someone else to supply a bit of “sh! t€housery”- Whelan was your man.
{Ed025's Note - im with you AR, my red mates used to moan about him every week but i thought he was excellent myself, but he never got the recognition he deserved if you ask me..
23 Jun 2025 21:00:40
I’m not having Xabi Alonso anywhere near the top 10. He’s a player that had a much better career after he left us but at Liverpool he was decent but not great.
Kenny, Rushie, Hansen, Barnes have to be in there from the 80s.
Billy Liddel has to be in there too because he’s an absolute Liverpool legend even though I never saw him play.
Gerrard because he’s the best midfield player we’ve ever had and I think the best midfield player the premier league has ever seen.
Of the latest crop you’d have to have Ali, VVD and Salah.
That leaves one more but I can’t think of another player who deserves to be mentioned with the above nine players so my tenth is a manager.
Has to be Bill Shankly because he built us up and up into a bastion of invincibility.
The phrase ‘world class’ is thrown about way too much these days but all ten of those guys were and are world class.
23 Jun 2025 21:17:41
So pleased to see Barnes in every list that goes back to the 80s. He was so special, the English Fenómeno.

I can go back about 20 years, in no particular order.
Suarez
Gerrard
Torres
Alonso
Coutinho
Mane
Salah
Van Dijk
Alisson
Fabinho
It looks crazy leaving out Firmino, Sturridge, Hyppia and Mascherano.
{Ed025's Note - not really MCR, they were all average mate..
23 Jun 2025 23:09:43
Kenny
Rush
Barnes
Hansen
Fowler
Gerrard
Ali
VVD
Salah
Suarez/ Bobby
Bobby is one of my favourite reds so got to have him ?.
23 Jun 2025 23:33:53
60 years and 10 favourites rather than ‘best’ players, one because I’m never sure what people mean by best and because the game has changed you can’t really compare what Ron Yeats did in comparison to VVD, any.
Roger Hunt
Chris Lawler
Ian Callaghan
Alan Hansen
Sami Hyypia
Rob Jones
John Barnes
Robbie Fowler
Ian Rush
Roberto Firmino
I could quite easily double or treble the list.
