Swapping Alonso for Slot is a disaster waiting to happen. He’s literally showing us he’s not up to the task with Madrid. He has no special qualities that you can point to, clearly can’t motivate a team when the going gets tough. He’s literally a carbon copy of Slot.
If he had retained the title in the Bundesliga, I may have been slightly more enthused by him. However we saw as soon as Bayern looked anything slightly above abysmal, parity was restored in that league.
Even if he gets Madrid winning, he doesn’t give me the impression he’ll do any better than Slot in his current form. I can just see he’s going to be a case of be careful what you wish for.
Conte would be a good shout, natural born no nonsense winner. Simeone would be interesting if a new club could rejuvenate him into the previous troll he was. However he looks to be in his downward spiral now. Inzaghi would be the exciting one.

Where did I hear that before, if he retained the title.

You don't want Alonso but want Contè, Simeone or Inzaghi, all play dreadful slow football.

1. Alonso’s biggest mistake was going to RM in the first place. That club isn’t structured to accommodate a serious manager - all it needs is a responsible adult to keep the ill-disciplined but amazingly-talented (at least before it was) squad happy - that’s it.
2. Conte is an excellent league coach - even ignoring his flaws, his league record simply can’t be ignored given he’s won 1st-tier leagues with 4 different clubs. That said, he falls out with everyone eventually, and despite his league success, he’s actually won very little else a manager. His record in Europe is appalling. He seems to be a coach that can win leagues when that is all his team has to focus on. Anything else, it falls apart.
Absolutely not a good choice for us.
Enrique should be the clear and obvious choice for us to at least try to make happen.

Imagine thinking Alonso wouldn’t be successful at Liverpool based solely on the fact that he didn’t succeed at the worst and most disliked club in the world.

Winning the title in the first place with Leverkusen is a huge achievement. Especially since he did it unbeaten throughout the entire campaign. People seem to underestimate that. It wasn't like he did it with a team that had been competing for the title in previous seasons like Dortmund or Leipzig. Leverkusen was a midtable team.

The Alonso situation shows nothing more than the Madrid players are a bunch of work shy prima donnas and that the Madrid hierarchy have again left a manager high and dry who wants to take the club forward in a positive manner.

Alonso would undoubtedly be a gamble, as his form as a manager has been indifferent. However at this stage I’d take Marcus Alonso as manager if it meant our current fraud is exited.

natural born no nonsense winnner?
if you don't think falling out with every board he's ever worked with, throwing his players under the bus and then falling out with the players too, going on extraordinary rants in the press on the regular when he doesn't get the players he wants, wanting a complete overhaul of playing staff at clubs he lands a job at and throwing a strop when he doesn't get exactly what he wants, if you think that doesn't count as 'nonsense', then we have different understandings of the word.
simeone is the highest paid coach in the world, and he still sets his team up to play like they had the budget of las palmas.

Not necessarily all in on Alonso, but I don't judge him on his start at Madrid. He clearly needs buy in from the players that he's just not getting, and I'd venture that it's because the Madrid players are coddled babies and not because he's some sort of tyrant.
When the manager you're replacing is telling you "the players don't do what they've been trained to do during a game", what chance have you got?

Our squad with a couple CB additions would suit Alonso down to the ground, Madrid are an awful, self obsessed cultured club, who's own fans at one pointed wanted Ronaldo out while he was still at the top producing crazy numbers, they have zero patience for a manager, personally, Alonso with his high press, forward thinking football would work a treat for us, and best of all he knows how to get world class talent like Wirtz playing.

Winning the title with Leverkusen was an incredible achievement, they were up against a behemoth of a club who literally dominate German football with very little competition. If Alonso had won a title as Bayern manager then it would be easy to dismiss that, as quite frankly anyone could with their comparative resources. But to take Neverkusen to the title was a remarkable feat.

Alonso turning us down to stay at Leverkusen and then jumping ship to go to Real Madrid tells me a lot about his judgement.
09 Dec 2025 09:22:28
He's a risk. I'd still take Iraola. He's a risk too. None are not.

Alonso took Leverkusen from the bottom of the league to an undefeated title in less than 2 years. That’s incredible.
The next season they didn’t fall of a cliff, they finished 2nd which considering where they were when he took over is still an extraordinary achievement given who he was up against.
Im not saying he would definitely be successful at Liverpool but to rubbish him because of what’s going on at Madrid is totally wrong. If they give him time and the authority to do what he needs to do I think he’d have them firing, similar to what Enrique has done at PSG.

Stromsgodset, you killed me with that one, man.

Slot did win the Eredivisie while not at AJAX/ PSV, a superb achievement in fairness aswell. I love Xabi Alonso but why is his struggles put down to coddled babies and work shy prima donnas at Madrid while with Slot its all about his tactics? These same Madrid players have won everything the last few years under a manager they all looked at as a surrogate father.
Sound familiar? I totally understand people wanting Slot gone but thing have to have some semblence of balance and not just be a witch hunt on someone.
{Ed001's Note - a manager that said they were impossible to coach and would ignore anything he told them to do, you mean that 'surrogate father'?}
09 Dec 2025 11:45:01
Impossible to coach yet he won everything with them?
{Ed001's Note - tell him then, I would think he knows better than you, though you seem to think you are all knowing.}

Alonso won the treble with leverkusen did he not? League, Cup and German super Cup if I'm not mistaken. Plus got to the final of europa league losing to Atalanta. Pretty impressive if you ask me. He would be my choice if it came to it but I think Slot gets more time to turn it around.
