Jurgan worked miracles. He genuinely did.

06 Feb 2026 00:26:02
He did LFC8 but by the same token Slot worked miracles last season after spending just £15m.

Even Klopp had bad seasons. We lost 6 home games in a row in 2021. We finished 5th and out of the CL places in 2023. He never got the stick Slot is getting.

I'm not defending Slot, just trying add some much needed balance.

I disagree LFC8. He built a very solid squad in 2 or 3 years, which only needed minor adjustments during his time as manager.

Salah, van Dijk, Allisson and Mane were arguably the best players in the world at that time.

Exactly his point Jurgen worked miracles.

Klopp is one of our best ever managers but let's be honest and say that he is with his own faults as well, mainly his over-loyalty towards players and his reluctance to make use of the transfer windows. The money has always been there to spend but his reluctance to move certain players on, even on loan, meant that our squad couldn't be added to.

In klopps last season City and Arsenal got 91 and 89 points and last season they hit 71 and 74 points.

I agree context is everything.

You can say Jurgens loyalty was a fault if you want but it was also one of his best qualities. Klopp turned the squad into a family that he was the father of and players would run through walls for him. You don't get that without respect (or fear) and loyalty earns respect.

Agreed Red-Will.

Interesting discussion. Not sure what the point is though. We waited 30 odd years to win the league, both Klopp and Slot won it for us. What try and belittle one at the expense of the other? Both of them are human, both of them put their pants on one leg at a time.

Why not just be happy that we have seen two managers win us the PL?

I think flowers from this post go to city who have 4 titles and a CL in last 5 years by just net spending 30m more than us.

06 Feb 2026 08:02:40
Great post West.

06 Feb 2026 08:22:35
I put my pants on both legs at the same time does that make me extraterrestrial?

Nah. Klopp was definitely one of a kind. Put aside what he did with the players and have a close look at how he galvanized the fanbase (in and out of Liverpool). Winning or losing, we became believers. And his personal charisma was the glue that held everything together: the players, the team, the back office and the fanbase.

Slot seems to be a believer in stoicism and rationality. Something that is not translating to the team or the supporters, as well as Klopp's "say it as it is and as loudly as you can" did.

Klopp is a unicorn. He made turned us from doubters to believers and created an elite culture built for continuous success.

I think managing us through Covid will certainly have taken a few years off his career and the finances around that time saw FSG tighten the purse strings for a period, restricting us from building on the historic seasons.

Clearly the Hendo, Gini contract situations created a tension in the footballing hierarchy and things went a bit sideways from there.

Not refreshing parts of the squad, in particular midfield, after that quadruple chase then led to another energy sapping season for Big Jurg and it was unsurprising he called it in less than 18 months later.

Being Liverpool manager/ coach is one hell of a job. Arne Slot has been through 5 years worth of drama in less than 2 years with us.

I do dislike these spend tables as they are always for a specific span of years so it's really difficult to judge.

For example, outside of the span of these 5 years we bought VVD for £75m, Alisson for £65m+, Mane for £25m, Salah for c£40m etc. 2018-2022 was us maximising the cohesion and performance of a great group of players that we had assembled (by and large) so there wasn't a huge amount of investment until last summer.

However, even when you look back over longer spans of years, we certainly haven't had the boom and bust model of Chelsea, City or even latterly Newcastle.

I believe we have spent our money wisely (in the main - some notable misses like Naby! ) under FSG.

Klopp and Slot have both won the Prem, but that's where it stops for me.

What Klopp did for LFC as a club was nothing short of amazing.

06 Feb 2026 13:47:04
Winning the toughest league in the world in your first season, isn't bad either.

Klopp effected the entire Liverpool community akin to Bill Shanklys' influence. He is an icon of the club. In the whole 50 years of my Liverpool engrossed life, I have never experienced such an all inclusive bond of all and every thing LFC related before Jurgen, nor do I ever expect to experience it again. It was a period of time that can never be repeated, a bit like Punk or Woodstock or something similar. I have tattoos of Bob, Bill and Kenny on my arm. JK is also beside those 3. I got his image very, very soon after his appointment and I was somewhat chastised in my local for perhaps being a tad premature! But I just knew I would never regret it, and you know, so did those same chastisers! They knew what was going to happen next just as much as we did! I will never have a tattoo of Arne Slot regardless of what he has left to achieve in his tenure.

The 2 people are totally incomparable and belong in 2 different spheres. I admire Slots achievement, obviously so as he brought us number 20, But I adored Jurgens achievements, the overwhelming desire of getting there and his near misses just as much! Not too many people you'd say that about. I hope Alonso can rekindle the fire. I'm looking forward to him trying for sure.

ArAy 1969 so have we become doubters?
