Liverpool meeting Marc Guehi today. Apparently trying to convince the player to reject city. I wonder if this might force our hand to move now.
14 Jan 2026 15:59:52
Was hoping having no defenders, and having a goal difference worse than Brentford's might force our hand, but that would do too.
14 Jan 2026 16:19:58
If they were which I don't believe I hope they have permission from Crystal Palace.
14 Jan 2026 16:47:13
Can we actually do this? I thought he could only talk to sides outside of England this month, unless a bid is accepted of course? Or is that purely to offer a contract but talking is fine not tapping up?
14 Jan 2026 16:49:00
Have we had permission to speak to the player?
14 Jan 2026 17:23:19
I really don't know about permission, but im sure they must be trying to secure his signature. Only time will tell.
14 Jan 2026 17:25:59
We've been in contact since he nearly came in the summer so we don't need permission. It wouldn't be seen as tapping up.
14 Jan 2026 18:05:16
Love that we're trying to get him to 'reject City' but not sign for us. I assume the idea is that we persuade him to stay at Palace for the season and sign for us for free in 6 months. I do see the logic, from the POV of not wanting to spend £40m unnecessarily, but we are really light at the back.

I thought Klopp was the only manager that took part in such dastardly deeds.
14 Jan 2026 20:27:07
I am not sure why Klopp gets such a bad rep on here considering near enough every single manager does it some way, shape or form. Watch the recent interview with Stevie G and McCoist and he tells the story of how Mourinho called him. We know Benitez used to get Gerrard call players to try and convince. Fergie did the same getting the likes of Neville and Scholes to talk to players on international duty. Wenger did the same with Suarez before that ridiculous £40m + £1 bid.
It is not allowed but anyone who thinks it doesn't happen or that some do it and others don't are completely naive. Arteta recently had his "connections" speak with Zubimendi, Odegaard and even Isak prior to moves. Luckily Isak didn't listen. We are definitely in conversations with Guehi's camp. We are still waiting on green light from Palace whether a deal can be brokered now or whether we hold tight for the summer.
14 Jan 2026 20:48:28
it's hardly 'tapping up' if they are NOT trying to sign him. I'm sure there isn't a rule yet for clubs trying to get a player from another club to stay in their current club and NOT sign for a different club? - good luck to Wenger trying to explain that rule!
14 Jan 2026 20:58:13
You are allowed to have your "camp" contact a players "camp". You're not allowed to negotiate specifics, or, and this was the thing that Klopp did that caused so many issues, TALK WITH THE PLAYER DIRECTLY. Not the players agents. The player themself. This includes romantic meals for 2 at the pleasure beach.
14 Jan 2026 22:11:02
Using your charisma to attract players, tut tut. Worse than financial doping with dirty money!
14 Jan 2026 22:16:47
You are if you have gained permission from the parent club Alvy. That's the difference. You can do whatever you like if you have gained permission, but that usually involves having an offer accepted.
14 Jan 2026 22:23:26
In the real world companies and individuals use recruitment agents because it saves time, and they can be useful in sourcing talent and brokering deals. But it's not compulsory in employment law, so why is it in football that clubs have to engage through them. Seems like a license to print money, that the fans end up paying for.
15 Jan 2026 09:48:34
With his contract up in 6 months we don't need permission to speak with him anyway do we? Assuming it's persuading him to sign for us in the summer. Not saying that it would be professional to loop Palace in/ ask permission as that would be the ideal out of respect BUT just stating that if we wanted to be a bit rubbish about it then we could talk direct I think.
Could be wrong though - my wife seems to think I always am ha.
15 Jan 2026 10:11:29
how does us meeting with Marc Guehi for us to move now?
15 Jan 2026 10:15:17
@Jimjam Only foreign clubs can speak to a player to agree a pre contract agreement once they enter the last 6 months of a contract. I believe that domestic clubs need to wait until he enters the final month of his contract.
15 Jan 2026 10:26:31
I think your wife is right on this occasion Jimjam, I think if it's clubs within the same FA you have to wait or get permission. If it's clubs in a different FA they don't need permission. However, I could be wrong too ?.
15 Jan 2026 10:54:52
Why wouldn't we have permission? Palace are obviously open to him leaving, it's just such deal makes the most sense for all involved.
15 Jan 2026 11:01:33
Life is hard isn't it?
15 Jan 2026 11:07:01
All I got to say is, Guehi better be the next coming of VVD to make all this emotional turmoil worthwhile lol.
15 Jan 2026 11:59:36
Well what ever happens happens if the lad wants to sign for us great if he wants to go to city then so be it we move on to other players . My only worry has our performance made the player have a second thought . Has he looked at the coach and thought he is not for me or has he been offered more money? The thing is we should never have been allowed to be in this position the suits have not performed their duty they have taken their eye of the ball while trying to sign multi pound players as we all know building something you start with the foundations make them strong then work your way up to the fancy windows and doors you don't buy the fancy windows and doors first because they may not fit in to what your building.
So Mr Edwards and Mr Hughes you had better start looking after the building before it crashes down around your feet and make sure you have the right works manager in place to. YNWA.

The wise man built his house upon a what?
15 Jan 2026 15:23:06
@Ron and @Shipley thanks for the correction - I hadn't realised that it didn't apply to Domestic Teams - well they say you learn something new every day :) genuinely thank you both, as good to know too! Glad the wife won't know I've been wring again!
