Ed 001 did Klopp buy Nunes last summer because he was going to change tactics and have a central striker further forward or was Nunes just a Mane replacement?

I understand Nunes isn’t disciplined enough yet and his lack of English is also contributing to him not starting, but worried he will look for pastures new if he isn’t getting proper game time. He’s a mega player and gives it everything.

Long Live The King

{Ed001's Note - he was bought to allow a change of tactics.}

Watching his post game interview, I was surprised at how bad his English seemed. I could be wrong and maybe he was just holding back so as not to say something out of sorts, but it appeared from the outside he hasn't really picked it up.

2.) 29 Aug 2023 14:55:31
For those who have not learned a second language before (albeit in the space of a year), it is quite hard to understand when people speak fast. You don't achieve fluency with everything so fast and even for me as a fluent Spanish speaker (its my 2nd language), if you put me in a room of 5 Argentinians, I'll struggle to understand them with the speed.

3.) 29 Aug 2023 14:57:38
Stuie_boy - Aguero never fully picked English up, either, and he was around for 10 years. Bale didn’t pick up Spanish in the 9 years he spent at Real Madrid. My own foreign language of choice took me 7 years to become fully fluent after starting at 18.
Nunez’s English won’t be the deciding factor in his success at Liverpool, not at all.

4.) 29 Aug 2023 14:34:38
Ed001, can you elaborate more, was the new system with Trent inverting always the plan, as it looks to suit Nunez more with not needing to drop deeper, but again would conflict with the signing of Gakpo and his role as he looks to be signed to replace Bobby.

{Ed001's Note - I think Gakpo was also signed to provide options as he was at his best in wide areas in Holland, but can play most positions. The new system is not to help Nunez, nor does it as he would be better suited to crosses coming in from the full-backs. This is just Lijnders trying to be clever.}

5.) 29 Aug 2023 14:35:05
Would you start him at the weekend now Ed after that cameo, his confidence must be up after Sundays game?

{Ed001's Note - yes. But I would have been starting him all season anyway.}

6.) 29 Aug 2023 15:17:45
Spot on, Taurus01 and LoweLFC. As someone who has learned a second language while being in the country itself, it is almost impossible to understand when people talk fast even tho they know the topic of discussion at hand. An absolute nightmare.

All you are doing at that point, is trying to pick up key/ buzz words you understand in order to try and summarise what what is happening and how to respond, both in real time. Also cos you understand a language does not even mean you understand the terminologies being used when discussing a specific topic so if Darwin does not understand tactical jargon in English, he will still struggle a bit to understand what he is being asked to do.

The whole language stuff is overrated and frankly, irrelevant at the end of the day even tho, it is good for Darwin to keep learning English cos it helps to settle in the country psychologically, let a lone helpful to playing football. Just my take.

7.) 29 Aug 2023 15:17:51
I agree, start Nunez over Gakpo whenever possible. Gakpo can still rotate with Nunez and Diaz. But he should never play midfield.

8.) 29 Aug 2023 15:18:50
I was all for the new system whilst we didn’t have the midfielders to cover the ground and implement the press properly, however with Macca and Dom as our 8’s, I see no reason to carry on this experiment.

9.) 29 Aug 2023 15:40:08
I agree with ed001. Nunez should be the first choice centre forward, he will score lots of goals for us.

I believe he would in the starting 11 for every other team in league apart from Man City.

10.) 29 Aug 2023 16:00:48
I remember a Spanish lad who was in my class at uni had came over the summer before starting uni and I was amazed how well he spoke and understood the accent, particularly since scouse is supposedly hard to understand even for some Brits. His accent was brilliant though, it would be very Spanish accent mixed with the odd really scouse accented words. Obviously some people pick it up quicker than others, being a high profile footballer probably doesn't allow you to mix with the natives as much as the normal person though.

11.) 29 Aug 2023 16:19:40
Oli don’t be too hard on yourself. Whilst your English does come across as you’re talking rubbish 95% of the time it’s great that you have tried learning it.

12.) 29 Aug 2023 16:27:50
That’s right easy. We now have 2 number 8’s plus Baj who can all cover ground. We have 2 great full backs who are best going forward and a CF who is made to score goals. Press all over the pitch and get the full backs putting crosses in. No debate for me.

13.) 29 Aug 2023 16:31:13
Guys remember Harry Kane and David Beckham were born in England ?.

14.) 29 Aug 2023 16:53:24
Metro, so was Jaime Carragher, lol.

15.) 29 Aug 2023 17:36:50
Jk23, brilliant ???.

16.) 29 Aug 2023 17:42:59
There was a pre match video of Nunez, Gakpo and Szoboszlai. Unless Gakpo and Szob were speaking in Spanish, then Nunez must have been speaking English, probably not well enough for post match interviews though.

17.) 29 Aug 2023 17:47:14
I am wondering how many interviews stuie_boy has given in another language on national tv?

18.) 29 Aug 2023 18:26:56
Well thunderbird, as someone who isn't a professional football player paid many thousands a week or given a private language tutor, I'd say none. At no point did I say I expect him to be fluent, merely that in my opinion, he seems to know very little which, coming back to my pony, is surprising considering he hardly works full time hours and is also likely given a private tutor.
Though reading some of the replies, it seems Nunez isn't the only one who struggles to understand English.

Can someone with greater knowledge and tactical acumen explain why Klopp doesn't like to pick Phillips? He seems pretty solid and reliable to me. If he can be coached to read the game as well as Carra or Hyppia, you can get away with not having pace if you can anticipate well.

Long Live The King

1.) 29 Jan 2021 13:44:25
The problem is would any fan give them to learn how to read the game better to make up for the lack of pace. Or will they say no not good enough after one game.

After winning a couple of major trophies the expectations are high and due to injuries it is not possible for Klopp to transition the squad without the setbacks we are seeing.

21 Jan 2021 22:40:28
It wasn't that bad. Burnley did what they do and parked a bus and countered. The team is completely out of form and suffering from bad luck and no confidence as a result. I remember watching last year and being amazed at how many rebounds after challenges came to a Liverpool player, at the moment none do. Had origi scored, mindsets would have changed and perhaps further goals added. The C.V. has changed everything but it's all going to be alright.

Long Live The King

1.) 21 Jan 2021 22:51:39
We need to find a way of playing teams that park the bus as other teams do. The problem is Origi did not score and we have difficult run of games that could see us slip so far down the league, where a fight for top 4 is the best we can hope for. Sometimes things are not alright and unfortunately and in this moment they ain’t.

2.) 21 Jan 2021 22:52:06
We got what we deserved completely mate and in a weird way this was needed to realise the squad as a whole is not good enough to retain a title or get in champions league.
Klopp is paid huge amounts of dough to manage a team so let's see how good he really is here.

3.) 21 Jan 2021 23:13:43
Exactly LLTK. I think we’ve all been spoilt over the past three years so this feels like the end of the world. It’s not.
If we were being outplayed every week and giving up chance after chance I’d be worried. As it is we are playing well generally until we get to the oppositions box then we make all the wrong decisions.
Surely we can give this team a break and believe in their ability to turn it around? They’ve been incredible for 3 years yet some are writing them off after a 3 week spell!
I’m surprised no one has mentioned this slump has coincided with Thiago coming back into the side. He’s a quality player but I think he needs to play further forward. He’s not a great tackler and he’s not great in the air either, both of which you need in that deeper midfield role.

4.) 21 Jan 2021 23:18:55
It wasn’t that bad but that’s now 5 games straight where that’s been the case, in the past month we’ve played the most boring football I’ve seen since Klopp took over.

5.) 21 Jan 2021 23:21:37
He's good enough to take over a mediocre team and turn them into european champions and then premier league champions.

30 Jul 2020 15:45:25
It seems as though players coming from youth setups in the top 4-6 teams are breaking through well in the last few seasons. Hopefully this will continue. I think Trent has the ability to be one of LFC’s greatest ever players. Like having Beckham, Gerrard as a right back. Can anyone else remember Fabio Aurelio who like Trent had a wand of a foot? He was a wonderful player to watch on the 6 occasions he was match fit.

Long Live The King

1.) 30 Jul 2020 16:07:41
Aurelio was brilliant, and if he'd been able to stay fit and had a few years here at the top of his game I'd say he'd widely be considered one of the best in the Premier League era.

As well as his quality on the ball, his positioning was really good (just as well since he didn't have recovery pace) and you'd rarely see him get skinned by an opposition forward or winger.

2.) 30 Jul 2020 18:39:41
SR, Aurelio was a player with insane, natural ability with a wand of a left fit. When fit which was so rare, he was a beast at that LB/ LW position. So intelligent, naturally gifted and did not need pace to defend or attack cos his positional sense was very good and he could bend a ball past anyone and any defensive wall. A true genius.

I still watch that amazing free kick at OT in 08/ 09 when we pummeled Utd 4-1 and frankly, the more I watch it, the better it gets. Only heaven knows what his LFC career would have been like had his body not been so fragile.

3.) 30 Jul 2020 20:40:22
Yes top shout there that guy was special, but as mentioned injuries disrupted what could of been one of our best ever left backs . I also remember veggard heggem when he burst on the scene at right back early on brilliant skipping past people for fun then the injuries mounted up, rob jones, marcus Babbel too . Big shame!

18 May 2016 23:13:01
Well that was sad. But not the end of the world. We did well to progress to the final with a team still adjusting to a new coach. I think in Klopp we have a really special manger, someone to inspire players and fans together. Hold heads high and support the team ready for next season. Good luck to the players and to all fans out there.

The best thing to come out of this season was the report on Hillsborough. Liverpool football club has great fans, a great history, a team which can compete and now an inspiring manager who we have dreamt of for a long time. Bright things are coming the clubs way.

Enjoy the summer one and all. Thank you eds.

Long live the (lion) king.

Eds out of interest are there any Everton players past or present who are reds fans? In the opposite way to Fowler and Carragher.

{Ed002's Note - I really don't know but I am sure others will. If you want to start listing them it will need a separate thread.}

Also shows how much Liverpool need to maintain a close and amicable relationships with the red bull clubs.

Long Live The King

{Ed001's Note - all clubs. It is better for us to be friendly, even with rivals. The rivalry should be left on the pitch like it used to be.}

How do they enforce a ban from the ground? Obviously you can’t buy a ticket in your name if you are banned. But how do they stop you if you manage to get one? Asking for a friend….

I would like him as a coach on the bench to intimidate the opposition subs, their coaches, the linesman and the 4th official. The guy for such a menacing looking fella never really seemed to be that aggressive, was he a bit of a gentle giant?

Why is Phillips being omitted from the first team in the league when Matip is injured, his performances when he started were more than competent? He will have to work hard at reading the play to make up for some physical deficiencies but that’s ok.
