Question for any of the eds/ posters. Aside from obvious stars (Gerrard Salah etc) . What player or players do you think flew under the radar and never got the credit they deserved for being as good as they were?

{Ed025's Note - Molby and Fowler for me Habspool, Jan always looked a bit heavy but his footballing brain was second to none, and Robbie was the best natural finisher i think i have ever seen mate..

Ian Callaghan.
Brilliant player who got better as he got older.

Fowler I agree with cos he gets pigeonholed as a poacher when actually he was a complete forward. He had great link up play, enough strength to hold off a defender, was intelligent with his movement, could pass, dribble and score long-shots.

Fabio Aurelio was, when fit, one of the best left backs we've had in the modern era, only marginally behind Robbo, and that imo doesn't get acknowledged enough.

McManaman gets overlooked because of the nature of his departure. But iirc when he left, he had more assists than anyone since the start of the Premier League. And it took Giggs something like 2-3 years to catch him.

Fowler wasn't called God for nothing.
The best finisher I've ever seen too.

I’m with you 025, stick Molby in the centre circle and he could pass the ball anywhere onto a sixpence. He would make Trent’s passing look average.

{Ed025's Note - he was quality MUSHROOM. Not the most mobile but in terms of a football brain right up there with the best mate..

Mcmanaman criminally underrated. World class and was at real Madrid for one of the club's most successful periods.

Kevin Keegan.
Under rated, Under appreciated.
Only to player to win the Blon Dor twice.
Molly was outstanding. They say he could pass the ball through a needle.

Macca was one of the most frustrating players I’ve watched on the Kop. He would constantly beat a man then turn back and do it again completely slowing down the attack and often losing it. It was almost too easy for him that he wanted to beat them again rather than being more clinical.

{Ed025's Note - i think Igor is Harry Maguire,s real dad sir Paddy.. :)

Xabi Alonso is the one that springs to mind here.
I thought he was ridiculously brilliant but he never really got appreciated outside our own fan base and wasn’t even appreciated by Rafa who wanted to replace him with Barry.

{Ed025's Note - Gareth Barry was also a very good player mikey..

Ronnie Whelan, for me.

{Ed025's Note - i liked Ronnie, very underrated..

Ronnie Whelan, Craig Johnston, Gary Gillespie, Ray Houghton, Nigel Spackman. All massively underrated.

Robbie was quite simply the best finisher I've seen. Left, right no problem either way, just new were the goal was.

Met him once with ray houghton when I was bout 10 with me dad. I was in complete shock my dad chatted to Robbie, he must of been 19 or so.

Amazin times.

At the time it was Momo Sissoko for me. Was gutted after that injury.

Ronnie whelan + Steve nicol. Can't split them. 2 excellent footballers who would be worth a fortune in todays game.

John Aldridge was under-rated in my opinion. A clinical finisher.
Peter Beardsley?

To quote goose from Top Gun the “list is long but distinguished “.

Gerry Byrne, Chris Lawler, Alec Lindsay, Ian Callaghan, Brian Hall, Ray Kennedy, Terry McDermott, Ronnie Whelan, Momo Sissoko (due to injury), Rob Jones (due to injury), Daniel Agger. (Injury), Fabio Aurelio (injury), Lucas Leica, off the top of my head. There will be loads of others

I would say Jan Molly was recognised internationally but took a while with some fans because he didn’t look like the right shape for a footballer.

Same with Fowler - anybody who knows anything about football knows how good he was and he is the most natural finisher (either foot or head) that I’ve seen play for Liverpool. I think the problem was his face didn’t fit in the England set up - he should have been England’s centre forward for years.

I always thought Steve Finnan was under-rated.

As well as those already named I'd throw Peter Beardsley in.

Steve finnan.

Ian Rush was a better finisher than Robbie Fowler. Fowler was better from long range and could score a free kick but Rush was more of a natural finisher.
Back on topic, I'm a going a bit leftfield because I'm drunk but I thought Titi Camara, at the time, was very underrated.

Agree with everyone mentioned, at least ones I remember playing. Steve Finnan for me also though. I remember in 2005, TodayFM in Ireland had a competition coming up to the Liverpool v Chelsea CL semi, the question was "which Irish player is still in with a chance of winning the CL this season? " They had 3 random names and then Damien Duff as possible answers.

I don't think he ever got the recognition he desrved but, I think he just got better and better every year.

Beardsley. One of the most talented footballers England ever produced but never seems to get mentioned with the likes of Gazza, hoddle etc.

Dirk Kuyt - workhorse who scored actually quite regularly - over his career averaged one in three and had a habit of scoring big goals.

There’s a few that spring to mind over the last 20 years. Henchoz, Finnan, Aurelio, Maxi, Garcia, Benayoun, Kuyt. The main one for me though has to be Danny Murphy. From that era he was overshadowed by Gerrard and McAlistair is romanticised so he’s easily forgotten. Cracking player, good vision and shot, worked hard and not a bad free kick on him either. Off the top of my head I think he scored winners against Utd 3 games on the trot. definitely underrated and not remembered as fondly as he should be I don’t think.

28.) 09 Sep 2023
09 Sep 2023 12:24:26
Rush was easily the best finisher we had, absolute predator. Aldridge was also a great finisher, not on Rush’s level but still great.

Fowler wasn’t underrated, he was rightly considered a club great, but he was more than a deadly finisher, he was a more complete player. Torres, Suarez both great finishers who had more to their game too.

Paul Walsh. So skilful and fast. But like McManama tried to beat players to many times.

RE: Fowler.
There was an interview on Football Focus or another footie show in the 90s. In it, George Best (not drunk) was asked to pick a Premier League 11. This was I think 1996 or '97. He chose Robbie over Giggs and justified it with what everyone has said here. Giggs was ace, but Robbie had nearly everything a forward should have.

Ray Houghton was always a favourite player of mine but he got overshadowed because he was in the same team as Barnes, Beardsley, Aldo etc. Great player though, his runs from deep were always timed to perfection and so difficult to stop.

Then when he got there he was a great finisher too. Kenny was my favourite player in the 80s but I modelled my game more on Houghton I thought he was brilliant.

Heskey. Did a lot of work off the ball and created space for Owen.
