This site is funny sometimes.

6-12 months ago, the general consensus was Marc Guehi wasn’t good enough for Liverpool and we should be looking at better players.

Most of the criticism included “he isn’t good in the air”, “downgrade on Konate” and “he’s weak at set pieces”

I would have said the overwhelming feeling was we should be looking at better.

Fast forward to now, and suddenly he is much better than Konate and needs to replace him, was a more important signing than Isak, etc.

Football is a fickle sport. Let’s try and put it into perspective.

The mgmt team have signed WIRTZ and ISAK!

Ffs lads, this is beyond anyone’s wildest dreams of this transfer window!

We have signed the best player in their position, last season in the premier league and bundesliga.

We have spent close to £500m.

What have we possibly got to complain about?

If any other fan base was still whinging for more signings we would be ripping into them for being spoiled brats.

YNWA - looking forward to number 21.

All I know is this is going to be the longest International break ever. And then Burnley will stink the place out ?.

Good post, Navy.

You’re generalising mate. Some say he wasn’t good enough, mainly with Viktor at the front of the queue, others thought he was the second coming. Personally I think he is a very good player, not crap and not top notch.
It’s just opinions, nothing else.

Well said, NK.

03 Sep 2025 09:40:49
NK, I got nothing to complain about, Guehi or no Guehi. Life is good, honestly.

???nk.

There's always something to address or to complain about. Why do people get so up tight about people giving their opinions and wanting continuous improvement / pointing out what they think is next to improve on. It's like some people just want everything to be green washed and no bad news. It happens in meetings in cpompanies with people too afraid to provide an opinion that isn't totally positive as they will be seen as problematic. It doesn't lead to a good culture at all. The government are at it now. I'll give you something that definitely needs improving - players with only 1 year on their contract. We lost Trent for nothing, we will lose KOnate for nothing and it could continue with others e. g. Macca. Whoever is in charge of transfers needs to pull their finger out and not let players enter the last year of their contract.

It might have something to do with Konate not signing a new deal yet and his terrible performances in the 1st 2 league games this season? Marc Guehi is an upgrade on Konate in my eyes.

03 Sep 2025 10:58:35
I don't look at him as being a replacement for konate at all, given he doesn't really offer the same qualities and he mostly plays on Virgil's side. However, he is a very good and intelligent footballer, a great character and leader, while I don't think he is an elite defender for 35m (and now probably 20m) an a-class English center half at his age, captain of his team, excellent on the ball, two footed, wants desperately to join us, it is a no brainer.

03 Sep 2025 11:21:07
It could continue with others, WM.
Liverpool could get Guehi on a free next summer or at a reduced price in January. You might not like it but it's not a Liverpool problem.
What do you think the people in charge of transfers should do? Say we'll offer you a six year contract, but it'll be for four or five years?
Yeah, that'll go down well with potential new signings.

We won’t know if Guehi would be better than Konate until he actually plays.

It’s very different playing on the left of a 3 for Palace than playing on the right of a 2 for Liverpool. Night and day different in fact.

Our CBs get isolated 1 on 1 quite frequently as teams sit deep and hit the channels early in behind the fullbacks so anyone playing CB for Liverpool has to have pace and strength to muscle strikers off the ball. Liverpool CBs also need to be dominant aerially as teams try to target long balls and set pieces.

Guehi won’t get isolated for Palace as they tend to sit deeper in most games and not allow space in behind so he’s always got players around him to help him out. His job in that CP team isn’t to win high balls either as they have other CBs who are much better than him in the air.

Konate is a player who we know can do the job as he’s been doing it and we’ve won the league with him doing it. I think Guehi will struggle personally I just don’t think strength, power and aerial ability are his best assets.

He’s a good player but I just don’t think he displaces Konate in our current setup.

Personally stand by my view that Konate is a better defender, bigger, stronger, better in the air, Guehi is probably more aesthetically appealing on the ball. Konate was top class against Arsenal and only unlucky that he got cramp. I do agree though that Guehi is an upgrade on Quansah and offers flexibility in the squad, being able to play centre back, fullback and midfield without fuss is helpful. I would also caveat my criticism of Guehi’s shortcomings by saying he does have a good work ethic, is clearly a good character (passing the dickhead test is always a good start) and by all accounts would reject all other offers to come here. I also respect that he has said nothing about the failed move and kept his counsel, the fact he’s just getting on with it says as much about his character and personality as anything else. Not my choice of centre back but Slot and Hughes know what they’re doing so can’t argue with it,

I'm sure it's a fine balancing act war machine, Macca is on a reported 150k until '28. If we renew him now on let's just say 250k for arguments sake that's and extra £15 million to account for.

Trent rejected an offer
Konate is stalling
Gakpo, VVD, Salah all signed.

03 Sep 2025 12:43:19
Some people genuinely aren't happy unless they've got something to complain about, never mind how trivial it is.
Also often found to be first in the queue to slag players/ club staff off when the team dare to drop points.

03 Sep 2025 13:27:34
Marc Guehi is much better than people on here seemed to think. Not all but most. The fact is he is a very good player, with a fantastic attitude.
I'm gutted his deal fell through. His Chairman is a dipstick.
My concern is how will we blend the players we do have, and how do we use Wirtz? When we have so many forwards playing against a low block. he won't get the room to operate. When we announced his coming I was super excited. Now I'm concerned we won't get the best from him.
The boss gets the big bucks to sort this out.
YNWA.

03 Sep 2025 14:07:15
Guehi is a very good defender who would have helped us immensely, Konate hasn't signed his deal ( think we should have tried to move him on imo) but he's also been playing poorly, I think VVD carries him a bit anyway but the more top defenders we have the better . hopefully it doesn't hurt us this year, Gomez who I like can't stay fit for to long n nobody knows what the Italian player is like . iv heard people saying Endo n Robbo can play centre half . not for me.

03 Sep 2025 14:36:57
@Robbieslostlegs - “we won’t know how good he is until he plays”. Really? So there’s no point having the scouting team or the data analysts? I’m surprised we ever sign anyone.

03 Sep 2025 16:34:12
Sorry WDW I didn’t realise you worked for the club in the scouting team and data analysis, I’ll bow to your better knowledge then.

The club obviously had the same misgivings about him because they didn’t go ‘all out’ to sign him. He was an opportunistic signing, a good player for a relatively small fee, similar to Chiesa. Otherwise they would’ve just paid more to secure the deal if they though we absolutely needed him.

The scouting and data analysis department didn’t think he was worth more than £35m which says a lot.

03 Sep 2025 19:42:19
Ah, I can see your mistake. Just to be clear, I don’t work for the Scouting and Data Analysis department so your assumption, like your initial assumption that you won’t know if a player is any good until he actually plays for us, was incorrect.

04 Sep 2025 01:25:10
This has become a pointless conversation now as you’ve misquoted me twice.

I actually said we wouldn’t know if he’d be better than Konate until he plays. He plays a completely different position to Konate at Palace and so is asked to do a completely different job.

I did explain in my previous post but I understand that reading isn’t your strong point so I see how you missed it.
