Oh to be a fly on the wall of this players meeting that was happening today.

Hi everyone love the site and reading your views. This season after such a great season last year has been hard to stomach. What's the views on Isak I think that money should have gone on Guehi and Konate should have gone. Don't hold the club to ransom.

I doubt it will be as exciting as you suspect. The last one that happened certainly didn't change anything.

Guehi was done, everything was agreed and we were willing to pay for him. Only Glasner stopped it by throwing his toys out as we have just seen again.
I'm not a fan of the club management right now, but you can't blame them for Guehi not joining.

Look how thin we are up top with Isak out injured. We needed to bring in two 9's at least. I think you could make the case to get a Diaz type forward who could also play 9, but either way the money had to go on a forward.
Whatever happened behind the scenes the result is that they failed to get Isak fit. He hasn't been fit since signing for Liverpool so it's impossible to really judge him.

It did change though. We played differently against Aston Villa and Real Madrid immediately following the meeting. But Slot in his infinite wisdom decided to revert back to what was not working instead.

The club could have tried to get him this month?
19 Jan 2026 15:02:53
Westwood - you can blame them though mate - the contract should of been plonked in front of Guehi's team 1/ 1/ 26 - he wanted to sign for us, the fee was ridiculously low and we missed a trick.

Knowing Arne. That meeting will be well boring ?.
19 Jan 2026 15:29:45
We had Guehi wanting to join us, we had since the summer to sign him Jan 1st and we did apparently nothing? It's on the club. It certainly isn't on the club when we didn't sign him in the summer but it is this time around.
I wouldn't mind as much if we didn't absolutely need a CB, if we could've done with one but could wait until the summer - fair enough but it's not the case, we do need one and we let our target go to a rival. Laughable.

As ed001 said, we could have sorted the Guehi signing for 1 Jan, so there is something we could have done.
19 Jan 2026 16:22:51
Virg can tell them all about the NBA game in London yesterday and what the other celebs were wearing.
19 Jan 2026 16:32:17
Westworld I will blame the owners etc because it could have been resolved on Jan 1st.

The problem is though, we need a CB that will take us forward for years not just this season. The club obviously didn't think it was Guehi and I make them right. Guehi is ok in a back 3 but he's hardly prime Van Dijk and he would've taken up a big chunk of our wages.
We went after him in the summer as a squad option to replace Gomez but who could've known Konate would be so bad this season? We now need to look for 2 long term, top quality starters and Guehi is not that. Especially with how the league has gone so direct with set pieces being so important. In my opinion Guehi is exactly what we don't need.
Thank goodness the club thinks long term rather than just filling short term holes with anyone who's available.
If we learned anything from Klopp's time with us it's that you're better off going with what you've got rather than spending your money on someone just because they're available.
19 Jan 2026 19:05:09
Right SD but the club blew that template out of the water last summer leaving us with an unbalanced squad. Going into the season w 4 CBs 2 of which are injury prone and 1 a prospect. If money was or is an issue the Isak money should have been spent on a CB, DM and a Diaz replacement.
19 Jan 2026 20:07:45
How did they not think it was Guehi they needed? Liverpool literally had him signed in the Summer. So at that point he was the right player for the club.
Sometimes Sean you don't make a great deal of sense mate.
19 Jan 2026 21:19:06
TIR, sometimes?
20 Jan 2026 00:26:48
For what it's worth I think he's crap, I'm glad we never signed him. Playing wide open he would of been shown up too.
20 Jan 2026 01:47:49
Ah so that's where you get your information from @LiverpoolFC8 - you know Arne Slot - now I get the picture. Keep up the good work.

Clearly they didn't think it was good value. Someone did an analysis on here recently on the overall cost, including wages, of what City are paying Palace and Marc compared to what we offered in the summer and it was overall approx £10M (allegedly) more expensive now than it was 6 months ago. We are not City. We have always looked for value. There was no way the club, operating how it has since FSG took over, was going to pay more for Guehi now then what accepted 6 months ago. It's not practical and I personally think that is a positive not a negative. I don't think we would have gone for him at all if he wasn't near the end of his contract.
Look, what are people upset about? That Guehi went to a competitor so we feel like we've missed out? Same with Semenyo? What difference would Semenyo make with our current style of play? Was Guehi going to replace VVD on the left side of the CB pairing so we're still stuck with Konate starting? Neither are world beaters. Very good players yes but there will be others we could get instead. Fofana looks great and is waiting on us and Schlotterback looks very promising as just two examples of recently linked potential alternatives.
I know it's annoying when we think something new and exciting is coming, especially given the drab lack of excitement offered recently, but don't let that jealousy of City's money pull factor blind you. We are still LFC and I have plenty of faith we can and will bring in great players to strengthen where needed.
I am also in no way defending Slot, Hughes or anyone at the club. We obviously need a CB or 3, I'm just saying it didn't need to be Guehi. a lot of people in the summer didn't even want him because of his aerial deficiencies. So we missed out. Fine, we'll go get someone better.
{Ed001's Note - for starters, that analysis was wrong as the deal we had agreed with Guehi, which he was happy with, was nothing like the same wages he is getting from City. We could have had the deal done before City even hit their injury crisis and came in for him. It would have cost us less than in the summer as Palace's asking price had dropped.
Secondly, Guehi is right-footed and can play on the right side to replace Konate. And who on earth is this Fofana you are talking about? The Fofana that waited on us to bid in the summer is Malick - a winger, not a defender. If you are referring to Wes Fofana, the Chelsea defender, he is a headless chicken with injury problems, he looks anything but great.}

Scouse John by your rationale whoever we signed would be crap then. Guehi is far from crap in fact he's very good and proved it at domestic and international level.
