I would like to congratulate Curtis Jones for finally showing he is worthy of a place on the Liverpool team.
Curtis has taken to right back like he has played there all his career. Also, he has been doing things we fans have been screaming about since he broke into the team, that is go forward attacking and passing the ball forward.
He has defended well. He could be the answer to Trent. He has the passing range. I really think Curtis has found his position, plus it would save the club millions to invest in other positions.
Having not been a fan of Curtis, I have to take my hat off to him. He does have the ability and I was wrong.
My apologies Curtis Jones

He has done well at RB the last few games, that's for sure.
26 Apr 2026 12:10:43
He's not great positionally, defensively at RB, but to be fair that comes with experience. He's definitely done a job, and it means Szob is in midfield, so it works for the team as a whole.
26 Apr 2026 12:33:47
He's done well. But he plays the position like he's playing centre midfield, which is understandable of course.
Eg. Cruyff turns and one twos on the edge of his own box, making square passes across the box.
Things that you get away with in midfield and help open up half spaces, but are very risky at right back.
26 Apr 2026 12:34:29
Am not sold on that one, his refusal to give the ball early, I think, against top teams will be a problem.
26 Apr 2026 12:42:05
Jones certainly grew into the game, but there were still lapses of concentration and dallying on the ball that have been apparent since his emergence as a first teamer. A talented player, though. However, for him to develop, he does need to be a regular starter, rather than a rotational option. The lad clearly has ambitions, and he is not the standard required at Liverpool to be a starter, so it makes sense for him to leave.
My only concern is that we will now have zero scousers in the Liverpool team. I know that isn't a massive issue to some people, but throughout my entire life I have seen a scouser represent Liverpool's first team, either as a strong starter or at least an option. With Trent gone and Jones looking to leave, there will be no one. Never seen a scouser-less Liverpool side, and honestly don't think I want to.

He's our new Milner (utility player). Was he not left of a front 3 before being played in mf? Hard for him to get a game when Mane, Diaz and Gakpo are in there. Good squad member, I wouldn't sell him.

Amazing what a couple of half decent performances by Curtis at RB show us:
1. That Frimpong was a strange profile of signing to replace Trent.
2. That we could have been playing Curtis there all along instead of pulling Szobo out of midfield to the detriment of the midfield and Salah.
Btw, many fans have been asking for Curtis at RB all season over taking Dom out of midfield. This is not a surprise finding.
26 Apr 2026 13:59:48
I don't think Frimpong was to replace Trent. I think he's a utility player to fill in on right wing and RB. I think Bradley was our starting RB, but got crocked. I think Gomez was first choice RB backup, but has been in and out with injuries.
Frimpong just isn't an EPL RB, just not sound enough defensively, but handy squad member.
It shouldn't be overlooked that the "Szob or Jones" argument only came up because we were 3 RB's short for large parts of the season. It's not been an easy season as far as squad availability goes (but poor fitness coaching and lack of rotation when possible have definitely contributed to this).
26 Apr 2026 14:18:05
Frimpong is a rb signed to replace an outgoing rb in Trent. Sounds like a replacement to me, regardless of their differing abilities or roles in the system.
Bradley and Gomez being unavailable for a large part of the season should not really be a surprise to anyone.
If we go into next season with the same three, we will be having the same mind numbing conversation again and some people will be acting surprised again.

Jones is a good player with a high football IQ. His ability to learn new positions that go against his natural attacking instinct shows that. Is he perfect in those positions? No, but he has shown he can play them to a decent level. People forget when he broke into the team he was LW/AM, a similar style of player to Coutinho if you will.
Klopp turned him into a multifunctional midfielder and Slot has now turned him into a RB. You need players like that in the squad.
From talking to him recently, I wouldn't be surprised if he signed a new contract regardless of guaranteed game time. Although I've told him to go to Italy and try something different. ?

Cheers, Thefields.
I would like to keep Curtis around if a deal can be done. Important to have a Scouser around. He's been unlucky to not get more game time while watching Macca and Gravy stink the place out every week.
But, wouldn't begrudge him first team football elsewhere either.

FPF, that is one of the reasons people have been calling him a trouble causer this season. He wasn't happy with not starting in midfield when they have been poor and he let people know that. Meaning his attitude was called into question.
26 Apr 2026 16:55:40
Makes sense, Thefields. Thanks!

Whilst I like Jones at rb, as he others transition from defence to midfield, to judge after only two games is way too premature. He is not naturally defensive minded, and has a lot of work to do on his game, as someone else said, he does have a tendency to take unnecessary risks.
I certainly think he can do a job there and offers us something different.
26 Apr 2026 19:53:15
He lost the ball and nearly gave a goal doing a Cruyff turn when hemmed in yesterday.
He does this every game. He thinks he's better than he is. He'll only ever be a squad player for me.
26 Apr 2026 22:45:42
It's like when Klopp struggled all season and fluffed around with the defence until he figured it out late to help us earn top 4.
Looks like Slot will do the same.
27 Apr 2026 01:08:56
The big difference was JK's whole defence was decimated by injuries. AS has had an abundance of talent given to him and doesn't know what to do with it.
27 Apr 2026 02:00:20
Alison has been out injured for two or three extended periods this season, Marma is out injured, Bradley is out injured for the season, Leoni is out injured for the season, Gomez has been out injured for three or four extended periods, as has Frimpong.
The only three who haven't been out for an extended period are VVD, Kerkez and Konate (although he has missed some games).
We also have Robbo but he hasn't been called on often because he sadly hasn't got the legs anymore.
I have to say @Grinch, we've had our fair share of injuries in defence this season.
27 Apr 2026 06:38:37
You need guys like Jones in a squad. Ultimately he may want a move for more playing time and that is up to him. But, like Elliot, who should have stayed, players like them are like gold for a club trying to challenge on all fronts.
You can't have a team of prime aged players in their prime and ready to hit their prime from the bench.
You need a variety of players and experiences. I'd definitely keep him.
27 Apr 2026 09:51:07
GrinchRed, I agree it's not exactly the same but it's not the polar opposite.
Fitness at RB, including Gomez, has been inconsistent all season.
We've pretty much only been able to play Konate and VVD as a CB the entire season. That hasn't been great, especially when Konate was playing like Konami for the first two thirds of the season.

For the Reds that are not in agreement over Curtis, I respect your opinions. But I would like to point out that Curtis has done really well in the RB position. It is not like he is playing in Sunday league, he is playing in the Premier League, and to be put into a position which is not his preferred position and play as well as Curtis has, shows his adaptability and skill to perform at that level. Yes, may do these turns, but that is part of his skill factor as a midfield player and will no doubt be told by the coach not to try that in dangerous positions.
He will learn as he goes along. But come on Reds, the lad has done well, give him some backing. We are all in a situation where we are complaining about all the players, even lads who have been at the club five minutes, our frustration is there for all to see. YNWA
