Hi Diddly Ho, As far as I'm aware, we approached Palace for Guehi - were happy to pay the fee they wanted. Guehi has been offered a substantial signing on fee and more than double the weekly wages we offered in the summer. The club will not break their wage structure to sign anyone, we have this structure in place and it works - it's not ideal as Guehi ticked many boxes but alternatives had been lined up since we missed out in the summer as the club were aware his head could be turned in January.

Can't say I blame him for taking the money option, but it's a kick in the teeth considering we had his 'word'. We go on, as far as I'm aware any defensive reinforcements in January are unlikely. Still expecting to see changes at the club before pre-season. Diddly out.

Alternatives are lined up. defensive reinforcements in Jan are are unlikely Sounds very airy fairy to me. Appreciate the feedback Ned, always have, but things just feel very out of place this season wrt out club.

16 Jan 2026 16:11:38
Cheers Ned maybe they want to see who Alonso wants next season Here's hoping anyway ??.

16 Jan 2026 16:14:11
Ned. just logged on to call out an update or any info from you or fields. Thanks for sharing. I think we have to be up there as worse champions in PL history. not talking league position. Just in how we play (fundamental change) incompetent people in suits. no connect with manager/ fans. a quiet anfield on match days.

How in 6 months have we imploded into this farce?! Btw I agree if we don't want to break wage structure. then fair enough. but that doesn't stop us getting someone else! Why on earth have we decided on. let's just hope for no injuries for resting season. Beggars belief it really does.

16 Jan 2026 16:18:43
This is what you call FAAFO.

16 Jan 2026 16:25:59
If that's the case then it's hard to argue, yes it's not our money but still we're not city and it's not sustainable to pay that kind of dosh to every player. I really like Guehi, thought he'd be an excellent addition and a much needed one, but money talks I guess. can't blame him either at the same time but he might regret it when dias stones and gvardiol come back.

Never ideal to miss out on targets but if it's purely a money thing then we're never going to win Vs city and to be honest if players are solely motivated by it then I probably wouldn't want them anyway. As they say plenty more fish in the sea, the worry is my confidence in the men behind the scenes having a plan B is waning by the day! Let's hope they do.

16 Jan 2026 16:29:30
Ozan Kabak?

16 Jan 2026 16:30:20
Can just feel we end up with mickey van der ven. Worrying injury list, could live with it but reckon you need another because of that hamstring.

16 Jan 2026 16:43:23
How would it be breaking the wage structure when there's players on a lot more like Salah and VVD and we would be getting him extremely cheat as his contract is almost finished.

16 Jan 2026 16:48:36
From what I have heard, the poop has hit the fan. As a fan, I really don't like what I'm hearing. I mean the biggest red flag I've noticed is that I'm getting info - says it all really. Expect things will get better once changes have been made, even if it means a timely demise of Ned Flanders the ITK.

16 Jan 2026 16:55:43
Its baffling how whoever is in charge of transfers etc. can't see we are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements. Not acting in this window could massively come back to bite us. Konate and Gomez have a history of injury problems and Frimpong has struggles with injuries since joining. If we suffer another injury of 2 we will be screwed.

16 Jan 2026 16:55:58
I'm just totally astounded we've not so far or seem to be looking to bring a defender in NOW. Oh well. Looks like Endo will get some game time soon as Konate is bound to get injured at some point and Gomez is never fit.

16 Jan 2026 16:57:02
Ozan Kabbage.

16 Jan 2026 17:02:39
Whys everyone's in a melt down over us not signing guehi?! He's getting a signing on a fee, 300k a week (which would make him about 3rd highest paid LFC player), and we would have to pay a transfer fee when he's free in 6 months. Hes a third choice centre back when everyone's fit and firing if u ask me. A Gomez upgrade. And people are acting as if he's going to save our season! We've been crap all year and a new cb isn't going to turn us into CL favourites.

All the time Slot is here we won't be able to press, sit in a midblock or defend set pieces. He can't even get us attacking and he's got 400m of new signings to work with! Write the season off and go again in the summer. There's a lot of work to do and one 5ft10 centre back won't fix it.

16 Jan 2026 17:06:06
Would love to hear more about the poop fan thing.

16 Jan 2026 17:27:09
Wasn't aware we had a wage structure, I like the player but definitely not going to lose sleep about him joining another team. Always another option.

16 Jan 2026 17:27:40
We have gone from one extreme to the other. We are now 'Embarrassment FC', and I don't use them words lighty! I know players can swap and change their minds about moves, and money has maybe spoken for both Semenyo and Guehi. So, I can only fathom that other players can see we have imploded, be that the Slot issue, if Hughes isn't equipped enough as our sporting director during negotiations or cash just now outweighs ambitions.

Im totally lost and dumbfounded, and getting no enjoyment from watching both our club both on and off the field at the moment. We seem to have return to the clown and circus era.

16 Jan 2026 17:33:36
Yeah need. Poop hitting the fan exactly?

16 Jan 2026 17:43:43
People aren't losing their minds about not signing Guehi specifically, its the fact it doesn't look like we are going to bring in any defenders this window. Its all well and good saying we are planning for next summer but if we don't get Champions League this year (which we are struggling with already never mind if we lose another defender to injury) it will make signing top quality players more difficult.

That is my issue with it all anyway I can't speak for everyone else.

16 Jan 2026 18:17:15
Agree with all above 2 injuries and we are well and truly f***ed.

16 Jan 2026 18:31:47
We're in limp home mode. Club has given up any ambition of winning trophies this season. League is over. We're not good enough to win the champions league as we're too weak in midfield and defence, chances are that if we get City or Arsenal in the FA Cup we're out of that too.

Heaven help us if either or both of Van Dijk or Konate get injured.

16 Jan 2026 22:11:17
100% DurhamRed.

Missing out on CL would be devastating.

When you're competing against City, Arsenal, RM, Munich etc to sign the best players, you can't afford not having CL to offer.

We can't fully compete on wages with some of the oil clubs willing to pay crazy money, and for players who are highly competitive and not as concerned about getting insane wages, you need to have CL and other things on offer like a settled squad, a top coach, a non-toxic culture etc.

If we missed on CL and changes to the backroom don't happen quick at the end of the season, I could see us missing out on our top targets.

I hope this window we at least bring in a young CB with high potential and some experience (like Leoni) who can come in if we lose Konate/ VVD to injury while Gomez is crock.

We're likely replacing Konate and Gomez at the end of the season anyway (probably one young CB and one experienced 1st teamer) so we may as well try to bring a young CB in now if any good ones are available, we need the cover.

{Ed001's Note - haven't we signed 3 young centre-backs this January already?}
