There's no plan for Alonso to join before the summer. But he will be the next Liverpool manager 100%.
The club want him to have a full pre-Season, also, it's confirmed, Konate, Salah, Endo, macallister and Chiesa will also leave, in the summer.

So if he joined now he would get more than a full pre season. Slot needs to go now. There will be no CL football next season other wise.

Thanks Thefields, Robbo and Carra for your incredible info - it is hugely appreciated!
Not sure how I feel about waiting for summer
Con - what player will go the extra mile for a manager that is going?
Pro - it is probably the right step to have a decent pre season
Leaving list makes sense. Maybe VVD and Robbo added? ?
Massive summer ahead regardless. Strap in!

How much of a preseason is he really going to get with the squad considering it being a World Cup summer. Also a lot of players to replace and try and embed into the squad. Will the club be shortlisting targets/ replacements already?
19 Jan 2026 21:17:07
I think the only full pre-season the new manager will have will be if he joins the team during the international break at the end of March. Due to the extended World Cup, most of our players will have a 2-3 week break after and will arrive for pre-season training at the beginning of August.

We sure a new manager can't get anything out of chiesa?
19 Jan 2026 21:23:17
Makes sense including the outs. Looks like phase two of the transition is going to need to be significant.
Two midfielders including a proper 6. 2 centre half's and two strikers with an existing need for a winger.

Very hard to have a full preseason wheb It's a WC year. I'd rather he signed this month to get proper time with the team before next season.
19 Jan 2026 21:27:23
Wow. I thought this year was the transitional season! As poor as mac allister has been this year, i thought he would be appreciated by Alonso.

Surely plans can change depending on the circumstances. I think we'll see Alonso in the dugout before the end of this season. If we leave things be we'll drop down the league and things will deteriorate further.
Slot's recently had a run of winnable games and fallen we'll short. The next run of games are tough and it's difficult to see him stringing a run of wins together. He's had long enough to turn things around.
19 Jan 2026 22:47:25
AZ agree with your point, i would think Alonso would like Macca. he's not been as good this season, had a op and very little pre season.

Who is Alonso going to have 'a full pre-season' with? Most of the squad will be in America, Canada and Mexico.
I'd like to see Slot leave asap but it seems that the club define asap as the end of the season and it's possible that Alonso, IF he has indicated he want's to manage us, has said he wants a break. If I was in his position (which I'm not) I'd find somewhere sunny and / or interesting, far away from footy, and recharge the batteries. Gives him time to think about who wants in his ideal squad and how they might play.
I think management still see Slot as being on track for the necessary objectives set for him in the season's planning and yes, I know there are lots of us think our set up and performance this season has been woeful. On statistics, not entertainment value, we are 4th in the league, going ok in CL and advancing in the FA Cup.
In the last 6 rounds of the PL, looking at the top 6 clubs, only Arsenal have picked up more points than us, and on the season only three teams have won more matches than us and both City and Villa, in 2nd and 3rd have lost only one less game than us and of course we are unbeaten in 12 games. Like I have said often, you can prove anything with stats but from a club and Slot's perspective they don't actually make poor reading, and, again, I reiterate that we haven't played well all season it has been poor value for money and Slot's apparent intransigence is myopic, at best.
The club is taking a calculated risk, which personally I think has a very high risk attached, particularly if we don't supplement the defence which is just one injury to a CB in which case we'll be well and truly rubber ducked. We shall see.

Thanks, Robbo.

WDW, wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. Great post.
20 Jan 2026 03:33:34
Robbo, any insight into potential suitors for Mo?
20 Jan 2026 06:37:49
Unless Alonso has said he doesn't want to take over right now, it makes no sense waiting. How did it work out the last time we asked a target to wait it out, better ask Marc Guehi. Feels like we're effing around again.
20 Jan 2026 07:00:37
Shout out to Slot still trying to work through this while everyone seemingly has given up.
12th at end of Nov and people clamouring for something to change to stop the rot. Now we're in 4th and the clamours are for better football. All fair enough, but kudos to the guy for moving forward with integrity and not giving up on the club.

Perhaps the compensation package in the summer - 'mutual agreement' - is significantly less than the 'eff off' package in January @Vik? And perhaps they want Slot to carry on the way it's going until the end of the season, rather than bringing Xabi in under pressure to work a miracle in the next month.
That said, I agree with you - the sooner the cavalry gets here the better.

Can't imagine any sensible person would want to carry on drawing against relegation fodder, WDW. Sometimes it's better to just pay up and be done with it. Madrid sacked Alonso so I can't imagine they'd have any claims for compensation and slot has 18 months or so left on his contract, so what's another 6 months compensation compared to champions league revenue.
Faith, we're closer to 12th than we are the league leaders and we can't beat relegation battlers at Anfield, our next 3 league games are Bournemouth away then Newcastle and City in which it isn't beyond the realms of probability that we walk away with no points given how weak and pathetic we are in midfield and defence, so the likelihood is we'll be back in mid table again.
