Now that it seems that Carvalho is off to Brentford, just wondering who you think is a player that we sold, but lived to regret it. In other words, that if we kept them then we really could have been a much more successful team. For me it's Xavi Alonso . We sold him in his prime and he was world class at that time. Pretty confident we would have won the league with him in it before Rafa bombed him out. Also, two other players come to mind for me. Beardsley and Berger. PB was also in his prime and that Souness team of early to mid 90s really needed more experienced pros in it. Berger I felt had 2 more great seasons in him before we sold him. Nice finisher, pace and creator of goals. Injuries didn't help I know, but we sold him too soon.

How can you compare Carvalho with Xabi? Madness. Carvalho has done nothing for the club yet, yes few decent showings and good pre season but all the reports over past couple of sessions was that his attitude wasn't right. He hardly tore it up in Germany, granted done well at Hull but that's still a good bit lower than he needs at Liverpool. Xabi owed us nothing, Rafa ****ed it by trying to get rid of Barry so that was the mistake but comparing the 2 is crazy if you ask me.

We got a good deal for a good player, is he better than others at the club that play in his position? In my opinion no and coupled with rumours of attitude issues I'd say good business and wish the kid the best of luck at Brentford.

I was never comparing Carvalho to the great Xavi. I only mentioned these names as we sold them both, and used them as examples only to ask my question.

Well for starters iv never heard of Xavi Alonso! Lol.
In all seriousness though, where did the OP compare Carvalho to Alonso Blame? Your arguing with a strawman mate.

Not sure they are comparing carvalho to Xabi.

Although I do think he was becoming a bit or square peg in a round hole…. I often wonder how Coutinho’s career and legacy may have gone had he stayed with us.

Not arguing lads just stating. By stating selling Carvalho could be a mistake like selling Xabi would feel like a comparison to me. Chalk and cheese to be honest but anyway my point was I don't believe it's anything like selling Xabi. We sold Xabi who was a Champions league winner and one of the first names on the team sheet for years. Carvalho hasn't even been around the squad for the past while apart from pre season.

Litmanen and anelka.

Don't sweat it BioT7. This is a hardcore site. I run my posts past my lawyer first and still end up having to get my coat.

I don’t think we’ll live to regret selling Carvalho as there isn’t a clear pathway for him in the starting 11, so we’re not really missing anything.

I have supported the Pool since 99/ 2000 season. I was gutted when Owen left, and also Fowler…but I think we already had the best years of both. It probably would have to be Alonso as we never really replaced him during the Rafa reign and it certainly impacted results and the potential of the team.

Been watching since mid 2000s and have had a few who left and did better. But most of them couldn’t have seen working out here (Suso and luis Alberto) or like Torres / Suarez / couts despite ability made their position untenable and could argue helped the club in the long run.

Alonso is the major one that sticks out but would say arbeola is another - left for a nominal fee and went out to win everything with Spain / Real. Made worse by glen johnson being his replacement.

Fowler then Torres. Though more Fowler as he never wanted to leave whereas Torres did.

If Rafa never pissed xabi off first with the whole debacle surrounding his child being born and then with trying to flog him off for Barry maybe he would have been a Liverpool player for a lot longer. He left because him and Rafa just didn’t get on.

Anelka is the one that really grates with me, he was an excellent player in the prime of his career. I’m sure there were a lot of others that we were sorry to see go, but who all desperately wanted to leave, like torres, the cheating racist vampire was also, whether we like it or not, pretty much the best player in the world when he left us besides messi, and he got even better after he left (which I would argue Xabi did too in his Madrid years) .

11 Aug 2024 15:46:07
Anelka is the one I think we should look back in with regret. Great player who was settled and happy and solved all of the attacking needs we had at the time. We allowed him to leave and signed diouf instead.

Had we kept anelka I'm sure that we would have won more trophies.

Beardsley going to Everton hurt as a youngster. I don't know how he got on there to be honest but I know when he went back to Newcastle he still looked great.

11 Aug 2024 19:07:26
Anelka is a good shout. I also think Aspas could have come good for us. Cracking player for a long period in Spain and we sold him shortly before a time where the likes of Lambert, Balotelli and Benteke were being relied on and failed miserably.
Fowler is another obvious one. He should have been a lifer.
Alonso wanted to leave with the whole Rafa thing so don't really mind that one, great as he was.
Only other one that springs to mind is Arbeloa. Seriously underrated and consistent RB in my opinion as he proved for RM and Spain after he departed. Probably the best well rounded RB I have seen play in red, equal to Finnan IMO.

11 Aug 2024 19:17:12
Beardsley is a good call and one I'd completely forgotten about. Alonso is a straight forward one.
A bit leftfield but what about keeping Kevin Keegan and signing Kenny Dalglish?
Another more obvious one is Souness. He was a huge loss and didn't want to go, I believe.
Another old one, Ray Clemence? I preferred his steadiness to Grobelaar's athleticism.

11 Aug 2024 22:04:54
Anelka hands down, we chose not to make the loan a permanent deal even though he was really good and signed el hadj diouf and diao instead off a decent world Cup, absolute criminal from houllier. Gerrard said it himself also, the season after with Anelka would of been the 1. Gerrard houllier signed some rubbish.
