I have just heard a very strange rumour, which Tbh I don't if it has legs or somebody is pulling my leg.
With the news that Antonio Conte is leaving Napoli this summer, this is the elite manager that FSG are looking to appoint to replace Slot. Has won 3 titles with Juve, titles with Inter and Napoli in Series A, also won the Premier League with Chelsea.
Personally I wouldn't be appalled if Conte was appointed manager, I don't think he would work under the current regime though & he is a lot better option than the "up & coming" managers we are linked with, even the fabled Xabi Alonso.
Bonus he is bilingual and speaks English & Italian.

Dear God, no, Conte plays boring footie.

Conte, an elite manager... When?
18 May 2026 05:23:11
Conte is taking over with Hoeness and Iraola as his assistants. Slot has told them it's way too hard to be full-time Liverpool coach, so he's recommended that they share responsibilities. One will oversee PL, another CL and the other domestic cups. International breaks will see team bonding exercises in Ibiza and the French Riviera. Breaking a sweat will be optional.

Elite is doing some heavy lifting there. He's s****. No ex Chelsea managers, thanks.

Every team Conte won the title with (Juve, Inter, Chelsea, Napoli), the season before he took over they finished 7th to 10th. His football is attacking but very strong defensively. As for not being an elite manager to win major trophies at every club you have managed (apart from Spurs - but, let's be honest, he asked for his release from that club & did have Spurs in 4th position when he left by mutual consent) is indicative of an elite manager.
The only manager to have won Serie A with 3 different teams, & you only have to see what has done with Scott MC (can't spell his name), average player from Man Utd, who last season was named Serie A Player of the Season under the coaching of Conte.
{Ed001's Note - attacking? Not in the slightest. He is far from attacking.}

He transitions from defending with primarily 5 at the back to attacking with 5, making use of quick counter attacks & direct football. He is not a slow build Slot type of manager, which is why I would term him attacking.
{Ed001's Note - he plays a low block, that is not attacking. It is boring and defensive.}

Mmmmh
Not sure about Conte ... I always liked the idea of him .. because he looks so scary and he is a lunatic on the sidelines ... he got Victor Moses looking like an elite footballer ... last manager to win PL with Chelsea ...
BUT not a fan of his football, although successful... he just seems like an old Mourinho type ..
in your club for 2 or 3 seasons at most .. win a couple of things, and then the grenade goes off in the room and everything goes to s*** ...
Think he would do well in the PL if this season's tactics and play continues.. would still have him over Slot ..
Just seems like an old Everton type manager .. or a scrappy team ..

The hot-blooded, angry Italian on the touchline would definitely send a rocket under some of our players. It's for that reason I don't see legs in this rumour, I doubt Hughes could cope with someone as volatile as Conte. Slot is easier to handle, I guess.

Guy_Gardner, Conte competes for league titles when they are the only thing he needs to focus on, and even then it isn't guaranteed. His record in other competitions is absolutely appalling - in a near 20-year managerial career, and having coached some of the biggest clubs in Europe, Conte has amassed 4 domestic cups (two of those nearly 15 years ago) and absolutely nothing in Europe.
Like Simeone, he hasn't evolved beyond what he originally became good at and known for, and thus his teams just get gradually worse over time.

You can't be serious, Conte wins titles by spending loads of money and then everything always goes t*ts up the year after before he starts throwing one of his tantrums and goes nuclear in his press conferences when the pursestrings tighten a bit and he can't spend his way out of a rut.
We want a young progressive coach who understands the culture of the club, has a sustainable long-term vision and can connect with the fans.
Scott McTominay is hardly an average player, he very much has the skillset to excel in today's footballing landscape, especially in Italy.

Edwards and Conte working together ? Conte might punch him.
18 May 2026 08:44:37
We know Hughes likes Italian football so there could be something in this.
18 May 2026 08:44:56
Conte could also have a fight in a room on his own.
He is better than Slot, but that's not a fit for us.

Conte would definitely chin Mickey and Dickie

Was gonna say the same thing, Bazzinga.

See, there are positives to this, BobSanvagene.

Ok, so, I don't think that Conte is the saviour of LFC by any stretch, but, I also don't think he would be an awful choice.
He demands intense fitness and discipline from his players, two things that have been sorely missing this season.
He has also had lots of success playing with 2 strikers in the past. Specifically his 3 titles at Juve, title at Inter, and occasionally during Napoli's title run as well (admittedly all in Italy). He seems like someone who could integrate Isak and Ekitike into a system that works.
He comes with a trusted coaching staff, so we would be able to make the wholesale changes that the club needs to the set up.
He is not afraid to push back against senior players who do not buy into his philosophy of hard work and intensity, or who cause issues in the dressing room (see Diego Costa, Eriksen, Dele Alli).
Yes, his football would be boring, yes, it's probably not what we want to see at Liverpool, and no, I don't think he really fits what we would want, as fans, the long term future of the club to be.
But for the short term, to stop the rot in the club and put us back on a good footing of fitness and passion, he's not a terrible choice.
I would still rather Iraola, Hoeness, or ideally Enrique, but if those aren't available, then Conte could be the best of the rest and certainly a step up, and a better fit, than Slot.

Is there another fanbase that belittles winning league titles more than ours? Or at least on this forum?
Lol.

Madness, Faith. Conte has won Serie A with Juventus (x3), Napoli and Inter. He won the Prem with Chelsea. That's 6 major league titles in the last 15 seasons. I think Liverpool as a club have 6 in the last 43 seasons.
I do not think as a club we are in any position to be judging Conte's silverware record as anything less than favorable! He also quit Spurs due to the players being lazy divas, and yet he still had them in 4th place at the time. That club's been a mess since they decided to back those lazy divas over Conte.
I like the idea of him. Kerkez, Bradley and Frimpong are all suited to playing in his 3-5-2. Two strikers is also something we should be looking to adapt to long term with Ekitike and Isak costing us north of £200m.
He also plays with a bonafide no.10 which should suit Wirtz. His back three system will suit Leoni, Konate and Jacquet who all played in a back three prior to signing for Liverpool. He also doesn't fart about with ball playing in the penalty area, which will suit Mamardashvili if he is to become first choice. Lastly, he will definitely demand the club sign a proper s***house of a midfielder to run their knackers off next to Dom in the middle of the park.
I'd like to see Conte in the dugout if Enrique isn't available and Slot does actually leave, which, following Salah's legendary post, might actually now become a reality.

Conte + Konate = Contate = Comedy = Worsethaneverville.
