Andoni Iraola insists on a 2-year deal.

02 Jun 2026 22:15:47
I don't know what to make of that.

02 Jun 2026 22:20:12
Apparently he always has done.

02 Jun 2026 22:21:47
Less to pay him off to get rid of if he's crap, I guess? The way I see it is that it's a declaration of his own confidence. "I don't need to have a Chelsea contract, I'm good enough that you'll want me longer anyway" rather than "I'll give you 2 years, then I'm off to Real."

02 Jun 2026 22:23:37
In his interview with the BBC last year, he stated whenever his family say they wanna go home to Spain, he will leave no matter how far into a project.

02 Jun 2026 22:34:53
No, I see it as him not wanting to be in England long term. I'd rather a manager who does well stays for the long haul. At least 5 years.
However, he and his family might fall in love in their new location, but it's a small red flag.

02 Jun 2026 22:35:19
What does it really mean?
The club will sack a manager at any point regardless of how long the original deal was.
A manager can leave a club at any point by claiming to be unhappy and there's nothing a club can do.

Length of contract is generally meaningless for a manager.

02 Jun 2026 22:37:18
I'm as much of a family guy as there is. But there's a difference between Liverpool and Bournemouth. A European night at Anfield and the Kop rallying on your Dad/Husband, and his family may not mind pushing out a return to Spain by a few more years.
Managerial stints are not long. A long-term manager now is 5 years.

If he's successful, I'm sure they won't mind waiting. If not, it's not as if these folks are stuck for a few quid. They can fly over the pond literally whenever they want.
If it gets really bad, then Arne can give some tips.
I'd be more worried about Mourinho leaving Madrid around the same time Iroala peaks with us...

02 Jun 2026 22:44:29
He does this to make a get out easier for all involved, and in case his family decide they need to return 'home', which he would grant at the drop of a hat.
Morally, this guy is the opposite to B-Rod.

02 Jun 2026 22:58:30
I really don't think a rookie manager is dictating anything to Liverpool, we are the draw.

02 Jun 2026 23:09:16
It'll take him 2 years to get these lot Fit. ?

02 Jun 2026 23:16:19
I make it that he will decide again in 2 years time based on how everything goes.

Let's hope it all goes well. In any case, I'm excited again.

03 Jun 2026 00:41:10
I'd sooner have a manager that wants the job, unlike Alonso, who appears to have turned it down twice (if all is to be believed). I'd also sooner have a manager with league experience that is proven relative to his respective club's expectations.

03 Jun 2026 03:51:06
Once he's here. If he does well and is soaked in our way of loving a great manager. If he succeeds and feels that pull of great nights under the lights. The Kop singing his name. If. He won't want to go anywhere in 2 years time.

03 Jun 2026 05:46:06
Who cares about the length of the contract?
We complain if it's 2 years, we'd complain if it were 5 years....

None of us know why he wanted 2 years. It is what it is.

In my mind, I'm gonna take it as a good thing.

I'm gonna see it as he gives himself 2 years to run as much as possible... it's gonna be a hell of a ride.

Just wanna enjoy it after the mishap of the last season.

03 Jun 2026 06:48:03
@Dhfc, I think it means he's keeping his options open. As has been said, it fits in with his previous m.o.

03 Jun 2026 06:58:52
I read he chooses a short contract to see how things go, football-wise and personally.

I don't see the problem, he's with us for 2 years, then we review: if we're doing well and his family are happy, he extends; if either aren't, he leaves.

Better than giving them a 6 year contract then sacking them 5 months later.

03 Jun 2026 07:01:16
Slot was signed for 3.

03 Jun 2026 07:13:33
I personally like a 10 year contract. Insist on it every time I negotiate to manage a Premier League side. No takers yet.

{Ed025's Note - phone Everton Bobby.. :)

03 Jun 2026 08:33:22
The duration of the contract is not, or should not be, a deal breaker, as it may sound. Remember Guardiola signed and extended contracts on a yearly basis? He still stuck around long enough.

03 Jun 2026 09:18:10
Keegans Purm, please tell me you're joking!

03 Jun 2026 10:07:32
Just read up on why he prefers short term deals, and I'm on board with him, allows him to be more focused on short term goals and not rest on his laurels.

03 Jun 2026 10:14:06
He believes in proving yourself each year and justifying your existence each season, so short term is the best way to go. I quite like the honesty, and refreshing outlook.

03 Jun 2026 10:40:29
Maybe he has seen what went on with Slot. One great year winning the league followed by one of our worst seasons ever.

If all goes well, he will probably be extended beyond two years. If his second season doesn't go so well, he can leave at the end of his contract without people exclaiming he has been sacked.

I just hope he brings back some sort of joy to the performances and a good feeling in the squad. It has been so disjointed this year, we just need steady progression and a return of the togetherness we got from Mr Klopp.
