Why don't English clubs do what Spanish clubs do - include a buyout clause into their contract? Also why don't they add a penalty clause in the contract where the player has to pay a financial penalty if he or she decides to run down their contract? And if they don't agree then don't sign the contract. I know players would not like the clause but it gives parity for both sides .

I might be wrong but I’m sure Ed002 said they weren’t legal in this country.

It's down to Spanish Labour laws and not specifically football. A penalty for fulfilling a contract? If you were offered a 3 year contract to work somewhere and decided you wanted a change at the end of it but your employer wanted you to extend do you honestly think it would be right to be fined? How would that same parity work if the player wanted to stay but the club didn't? There are far more players getting released than running down contracts, we have occasionally been stung but mostly get good money for players whilst also releasing plenty at the end of their contracted time.

Who in their right mind do you image will sign an initial contract that says you will be penalised if you don’t sign another contract?

22 Jun 2025 12:14:55
A penalty for completing your contract lol
So what about Milner, Bobby, Gini, Ox, Adrian, Keita, Lallana, Clyne?

Players club seemed happy to let leave for free. Isn’t that parity?

What about when a club sells a player before the end of their contract. Isn’t that parity?

“Also why don't they add a penalty clause in the contract where the player has to pay a financial penalty if he or she decides to run down their contract? ”

Because penalising somebody for fulfilling their contract is an insane idea.

Honouring your contract is a good thing ? you’ve signed an agreement and stuck to your word!

You could offer a contract where the wages in the final year are dramatically decreased. Therefore incentivising the player to renew or move clubs before entering their final year.

Brown Jesus - so get paid less for doing the same job for a full year just because a player hasn't extended? Vvd and Salah would have been on a pay deduction this last year. Utter madness.

A financial penalty for fulfilling your contractual obligations - hilarious.

In that case clubs would sign all players to a 1 year contract and if they don’t renew then the club is quids in.

This is the dumbest post I've seen for a while and that's saying something.

@Wassa-lfc and @Ron, that nonsense is exactly why Jean Marc Bosman (then, at FC Liege when) sued and won in court 30 years ago hence, the Bosman rule became a thing, if I remember the story correctly.

@oli, correct, freedom of movement of workers. Article 39 back in the day, don’t know right now.

BOOM, @Baker. It became a labour issue, not a footballing issue.
