The idea that there is a ceiling for the clubs who are not one of th traditional big clubs is being given more weight by just how hard it is for Newcastle to buy a player.
When sesko would rather play for a team that was relegation fodder than a club in European competition that can also offer competitive wages.

I have said all day long that Newcastle have money but can’t sell their project. People were laughing on how PSR was the issue at Newcastle.
06 Aug 2025 06:03:21
Regardless of league position or form, Manchester United are a bigger club. The only way Newcastle can try and compete when trying to attract players, is to pay more wages. PSR are there to make sure that clubs can only offer wages that are a reflection of the clubs success, on and off the pitch. Why should Newcastle, who have won one trophy in modern history, be able to compete with one of the biggest clubs in the world? (Yes, I felt sick saying that! )
Surly they should have to earn that right to compete with success, same as everyone else.

Agreed Gold Stars, as much as it pains me to.

I would have thought a year (at least) in the Champions League with a wealthy upandcoming club would trump a year at a renowned club trying to get beyond mid-table.
I know United have a glorious history (possibly the second best in the league) but their manager and team is currently unproven and its a flip of the coin whether they can make the European Conference League next year.
If wages are equal, i would suggest Newcastle are a safer bet for the next year or so.

Man Utd's recent history will always be associated with glory days of Beckham, Giggs, Rooney, Ronaldo, Sir Alex.
Newcastle makes me think of Sports Direct.
If your 22 and grew up in Slovenia Man Utd will have been on the TV and in the papers rather than a Championship bound Newcastle.

Man united will be fighting for the European places, last season they just gave up. My biggest intrigue for them this season is how they handle any type of rough patch. Will the new players help fight through it or will they return to their old ways off throwing in the towel.
As for Newcastle, yes they are in the CL next season but will they be in it beyond? It’s been well documented how they’ve struggled to get their main targets so It’s hardly the most appealing ticket for players right now as it’d be fair to question how they plan to push on.
06 Aug 2025 07:59:36
Newcastle are in some much chaos when it comes to in club leadership positions that it cannot be easy to sell a coherent vision to targets. Add that to the fact that we're still at a point where these players were kids during United's reign of terror, and it's going to be a hard sell to get a player to choose Newcastle over Manchester.

Man United is still one of the biggest clubs in the world and Sesko isn't going to move so that can Isak can join us.
{Ed078's Note - is anyone suggesting that that is his motivation? And, they finished closer to relegation than a CL spot, so not sure the moniker of "one of the biggest clubs in the world" still holds much weight.

London_red, I'm pretty sure you haven't read and comprehended any of the stuff that's been written about Newcastle and PSR, but if you want to doggedly hold on to your view purely on the basis that Newcastle are owned by the Saudis and hence they can spend whatever they want, then that's fine. Even Newcastle fans and journalists are saying that Newcastle can't offer the same kinds of wages as United. Of course other factors besides purely money come into play, but it's a fact that United offered more money in terms of wages for the likes of Mbeumo than Newcastle could manage within their wage structure.
PSR is a handicap for them, pure and simple, there's no getting around it. Isak was promised a contract by Staveley, Staveley was ousted from the club, Isak was told by Paul Mitchell that they couldn't afford the contract, Isak was pissed off and had to be calmed down by Howe, why else did he play so poorly at the beginning of the season, and why did his performance tail off so much after Newcastle won the league cup? Sure, it's not just the contract, Newcastle also haven't improved their training facilities and the stadium, but all this comes down to money as well. If Newcastle could spend whatever they want, why didn't they give Isak the contract he wanted? Part of the reason why Gordon wanted to come to us, not simply the fact that he is a childhood red, is because we could offer him a pay rise that Newcastle could not. Let's not be naive about things.

All Newcastle and other clubs have to do is grow their fan base by about 300 million people, get bigger sponsors, stop selling their best players to so called bigger clubs and buy better players to compete whilst staying within PSR.
Not sure why they would moan it seems easy enough.
{Ed078's Note - stop talking sense JK, it'll never catch on.
06 Aug 2025 09:15:02
Ed078, I didn't mean that it was Sesko's motivation. I think a lot on here are more concerned with Sesko going to United because of how it will affect Isak to us rather than the Sesko transfer itself.
United are going through a bad spell and last season was dreadful but they are still one of the biggest clubs in the world, imo. Not many teams closer to the relegation places than the CL places are paying over £70m for another forward.
That might not always apply but it still does, for me.
{Ed078's Note - that is true Rigsby and you are a consistent poster of sense, so all good.
06 Aug 2025 09:18:49
Let's face it . the only reason Newcastle are struggling to attract players is because of PSR, they're a big club and have the richest owners on the planet but can't spend it, but if they could we know most of the players would go . just look at Chelski, Citeh n recently the Saudi league, not really considered big clubs until they got an avalanche of money.
06 Aug 2025 09:44:02
Newcastle should poach mancity’s accountants. Then they could afford anyone they like.
06 Aug 2025 10:09:15
Chelsea and City still aren’t big clubs Strom they are mid table clubs who have overachieved due to having sugar daddy owners and are both now having similar issues to Newcastle. The only difference is they were allowed to get much further down the overspending road before PSR came in so they managed to win a few things but both are dropping off now they can’t spend as they please.
Man Utd are a genuine big club with a genuine worldwide fanbase. Nobody other than a geordie grows up dreaming of playing for Newcastle but plenty will dream of playing for Utd, Liverpool, Madrid, Barca, Juve, Bayern etc.
It’s very tough to break into that group of genuine big clubs. City and Chelsea have tried and failed. Yes they are both bigger than they were but nowhere near the big clubs and now PSR is here it’s tough for them to grow any further.
06 Aug 2025 10:13:44
United has the reputation of being one of the biggest clubs in the world based on their success over the years.
At the moment they aren’t a world class club but that oddly doesn’t matter as much as their reputation.
It not a new phenomenon - we were poor for the better part of three decades but we still had the likes of Coutinho, Torres, Suarez, Mascherano, Alonso etc, join us. You could probably even add VVD and Ali, who were taking a risk joining us I guess.
06 Aug 2025 11:20:05
That Generational Pedigree schtick is a REAL thing and Newcastle are finding that out in real time.
06 Aug 2025 12:10:59
As for as Im aware Newc don't have a director of football/ someone responsible for recruitment at the min which I believe is hurting them massively in trying to sell the overall plan.
06 Aug 2025 13:42:45
A football club who lays of employees to save less than one or two players weeks wages is not one of the biggest clubs in the world . Your staff are the back bone of your club they run the operational side so the players can just train and play football. Our club tried it during covid but the fans put a stop to that. In my opinion man utd went down the pecking order when they did what they did and it will be a long time before their back up there. YNWA.
