So City paid £20m and 10m in add ons for Guehi and he is getting 300k pw. So maybe that's a contributing factor in why we didn't sign him. However there is no excuse in not signing Jeremy Jacquet.

£30m plus 300k over a 5 year deal is something I wouldn't do. That puts him on more than the best players at City and would of put him as our 3rd highest earner. Jeremey Jaquet Rennes want £50m which is double what I'd pay for him.
Semenyo I believe we pulled away as we got word Diomande wanted us. 6 years younger bigger ceiling and less wages. Although transfer fee would be huge.
{Ed001's Note - we had a lower salary all agreed with Guehi, we would not have paid him 300k.}
18 Jan 2026 18:04:38
I get that ed and we should of paid the 50m they wanted at the start of the summer instead of haggling for 15m. But if the player really wanted us why not just wait until the summer.
{Ed001's Note - because he has no idea who the coach will be then and if that coach would even want him. It was clear that Slot would not be in the role next season and it was Slot who wanted him.}
18 Jan 2026 19:32:43
That's understandable on Guehis part then.
18 Jan 2026 23:06:10
Ed1 are Man City not sure who their manager will be? Rumours circulating that pep will be leaving end off the season so guehi will be limbo at city unless he does well. Also if he had waited till the summer he would have had a whole heap of clubs after him.
{Ed001's Note - he wanted out of Palace now mate. It wasn't about the money for him, he would have waited if it was and got the millions extra signing bonus.}

I think we have no option left but to sack Slot now. It's clear this job is too big for him. He indicated it wasn't booing yesterday! More of a frustration that he and his players feel! No poop Sherlock.
The last thing I want to do is analises every word Slot says, it's just clear he can not motivate this squad of players. Eg I seen a report that he told Ramsey " I have better options than you "
I ask myself how would Klopp handle that situation? I think he would have told Ramsey " I believe in you, you are going to be a vital part of this team" the kid would have felt 10 foot tall.
Now if true that kids confidence must be on the floor!
I only hope if reports are true, that Alonso wants to come. Do it now whilst we still have a chance of CL next season. Liverpool without CL footie are not a prospect top managers want these days.
So bite the built and get it done. Even if Alonso needs a short break. Get him in before the end of the season so that he can get to grips with this shambles

Chriisymate, and also season. When all is going well, we have even Feyenoord fans saying Slot's strength is his communication skills, apparently very clear communication. I don't what to make of it.
19 Jan 2026 08:11:25
Happy Peter
I'm not sure if it was true what he told Ramsey. But how would that inspire a kid?
Clear communication is one thing, demoralising one of your own is downright poor management. His judgement on players is sketchy at best, Gapco for example is far from top draw! Macalister gets a start every week? Why? He is lazy, slow, and spends more time rolling around than he does on his feet.
We need a change.
19 Jan 2026 23:45:59
Slot said it at the press conference, that he has others ahead of him better, which must be demoralising, as most are midfielders!
18 Jan 2026 12:27:26
Hi eds1
What do you think about Alison's form at the min. I think he's kicking is way off and has been for while and i thought he should have saved that goal yesterday. ?
{Ed001's Note - I don't know about should have saved it, but I do feel peak-Ali gets it. His kicking is off I defo agree on that. It always takes a bit of time to get sharpness back after injury though, I am sure he will back to his best soon.}
Agree3
19 Jan 2026 08:32:50
I would say his kicking is struggling because there's a lack of movement ahead of him to make an option
Same as when the back 4 get it.
There's not that rotation in midfield we saw between Hendo, Fab and Gini for example. And Milner and Thiago when they were in there
Just stand up against your opponent and see what happens
It's static.

Being reported today that Chelsea are prepared to pay €50m for defender Jeremy Jacquet, but Rennes want more than €60m.

Hello Ed1
I've been wondering for some time about the football world in general but more specifically the coaching world. There seems to be very little knowledge of basic coaching stuff and how to set us a team. I'm thinking of Glasner, Arteta, Amorim, Slot and so on. They seem to stick to their ideas, even though they're not producing any outcome. The resistance to change basic stuff to accommodate differentc curcumstances. I remember Klopp, Bielsa the guy from Atalanta, knowing how to get at an opponent, using their team to exploit the weakness in their opponents. Look at Arsenal, they could basically have won the league by now with a better coach giving their squad.
It seems like a closed world where the coaches are holding their ear and eyes just going on with their drops football hoping it have an output at some time? Is the basic examination to easy as too getting an A-license or where do this stubbornness comes from?
There also seems to be the same lack of knowledge in the sporting director section, maybe even at a higher degree. Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, United and so on. If it had been general companies expecting an outcome, they would have been sacked emidietly.
Why don't they, in Liverpool as an example, not agree to disagree, that would have led to a change long ago?
After every game, they should get together and point out the weaknesses in the line up, tactics, setpiece and so on. The only job off one of them has to be, to point out the weaknesses. It's not even critique it's just common sense. So why are they so ego-centered not wanting critique at any kind?
{Ed001's Note - every club does have data analysts and video analysts whose job is to produce reports detailing what went right and wrong each game. It is more of a problem that these days, due to the immense pressures on them, to make it as a manager at the top level you need to have a huge amount of self-belief, bordering on sheer arrogance. So we end up with people who think they know better than everyone else. They no longer get promoted up from lower league football into the top echelons, if they do they get ignored by the players and the fans will not get behind them. We have ended up with a basically closed shop looking at a tiny pool of people.}

Hi Ed's.
Would love your thoughts on the state of the club - on and off the pitch.
I am worried. We look from the outside to be a fractured organisation, with people pulling in different directions - which (as it always does) is now manifesting itself in bad results on the pitch.
From the problems with the new stadium entry system, to the lopsided seemingly shambolic recruitment, to the obvious issues with the team.
As the real King said, the club will only have success if everyone feels part of it and all pull in the same direction.
We have lost that at the moment and the people in charge need to rectify that asap.
{Ed001's Note - I don't know if I am the right person to discuss this, as I was against the return of Edwards from the start and this is on him. He is the one bringing in the people to run things and he is indecisive and weak, as we saw when he failed to rein in Klopp, despite being his boss. For me, he would be the first replaced, along with Hughes and Ward.
The business side of things just adds to it. The stadium entry system is a shambles, it should have been tried and tested and refined before introduction, rather than just putting it in and hoping for the best. But football clubs always seem to take fans for granted, despite the recent evidence of the COVID season to show just how important we are to the game.}

The penalty on Gakpo was almost as identical to the one on Wirtz v Arsenal that was not given WHY?
So how do they explain how one ref and var says not a pen and a ref and var say in another game it is a pen something not right!

I think that's harsh on Captain Picard. What's he done to us?
He's not even real.
18 Jan 2026 10:10:59
It's time for slot to go! Our first choice manager is now out of work so it's time to get him in. The first thing klopp said when he signed was he was going to turn doubters into believers. Slot has turned everyone into doubters again.

Tbh Arne has to go, but if Hughes keeps his job it's a travesty. He's assembled this squad and it's a mess.
18 Jan 2026 09:41:33
Just to put things in perspective there are 16 games left and we sit a mire 3 pts ahead of 8th placed Sunderland.
If things went badly against us this week we could find ourselves in 7th or 8th on goal difference. Just before you all start with "if" my auntie was a bus she'd have wheels scenario let's take a look how we've got on in the last 18 games in the league this season taking a grand total of 24pts from a possible 54pts available and scraping last minute wins in our 1st 4 games to have 12pts from 4 at the start.
Not great reading is it and if you were to look back at any of those performance's you would realise just how poor we've been all season, anyone who thinks we can hold onto 4th place with Slot at the helm with his absolutely disgusting tactics a team that as no guts, no pace and very little desire to put in anything that resembles a decent performance under this manager is absolutely deluded.
There can't be anymore time alloted to Slot and his coaching staff or we risk missing out on champions league football and the revenue it brings with it.
Personally I want him gone and either Alonso in or an agreement with Alonso to take the reins in the summer and an interm manager appointed for the rest of the season.
I have never in my 50yrs of supporting this club ever lost faith in our ability to turn games around but I have this season and the minute Burnley scored yesterday I knew that was it and I did something I've never done and that was turned off the TV.
I just can't stomach these painful performance's
anymore, I feel gutted for the supporters who pay their hard earned money to go watch these half hearted dire performance's under this manager week in week out.
What I hope doesn't happen is that Slot will be left in charge till the end of the season.
Alonso will sign for some other club as we will mess this up as per Semenyo and Geuhi and we will end up getting a 4th or 5th choice manager in. That's if the powers that be don't decide to give Slot another season just to push us further down the table and back into the obscurity of the 90's and 00's.
Hopefully someone will see sense and remove Slot from his position sooner rather than later or we will end up in 5th or 6th place or worse come the end of the season.

Any news from anywhere on the Harvey Elliot situation? His stock couldn't have been higher after a good u21 tournement, Villa won't play him and it seems right now at least he won't be coming back. What a waste of a season if nothing happens.
Surely he is a decent bench and cup option?

It would cost us money to end the loan. But also, how does he improve what we're seeing, hasn't got the physicality for centre midfield and hasn't the pace to play ourt wide.
18 Jan 2026 10:06:45
I thought it would cost Villa to end the loan?
I'd rather him on our bench than theirs with 0 chance of playing, the lad does have a goal in him.
18 Jan 2026 10:24:18
EM, Slot doesn't want him. While he would definitely play a bit here and there, Villa are contractually obligated to terminate the loan. They don't want to stump up the cash.
I wish the club would forego the payment (I am assuming it can be more than 2-3mn) for the lads sake. At least he will get some game time if he comes back. I feel really sorry for him.
18 Jan 2026 11:26:32
It was a p. poor loan from the outset. He'd have been better off going to the Bundesliga.
18 Jan 2026 13:40:59
I believe that we have no recall option and Villa would need to cancel the agreement which would result in a financial penalty that they don't want to pay.
It's sad for Harvey but he doesn't add anything to our squad so it makes no sense for us waive any financial penalty for Villa just to fork out more money on wages etc just because he wanted a move that didn't work out for him.
