I’m always reading about all time best XI and best signings. What about underwhelming signings who did alright.

I can think of gini, rob jones and speedie. Any others?

Andy Robertson.
Joel Matip.
Salah and Mane were miles better than I expected them to be.
And Arne Slot, of course!

I never heard of Robertson really and thiught spending money on some winger from Southampton (Mane) was crazy.
Ox lit it up way more than I expected until injury.
Salah of course.
Matip for sure.
Lucas?

Titi Camara.

Robbo
Lucas
Hendo.

Matip, Rosenthal, Mascherano.

02 May 2025 22:26:55
Steven Caulker. I thought we were signing a premier send her back. Had no idea he could also play striker.

02 May 2025 23:35:54
Henchoz.

03 May 2025 07:21:10
Gary Mac and Robbo.

03 May 2025 07:40:52
Rob jones best debut I’ve seen and would have been englands rb for years
Hypia
Robbo
Finnan.

03 May 2025 08:33:30
Robbo was the 1 for me, I thought he not near good enough for lfc, how wrong was I! For a period of I'd say 2-4 years quite possibly best lb in world.

It would have to be Hyypia for me. I remember when we signed him, thinking who is he! He went on to be superb for us.

Regards to Rob Jones, if he hadn't have had the injuries, no way would Gary Neville had got the number of caps he got.

Regards to Speedie, he only played a handful of games for us. I thought he was an odd signing; just my opinion. That said, whenever he played against Hansen he gave him a torrid time.

Maxi Rodriguez.

Surely Millie has to be on this list? I'm sure we were all a bit apprehensive that he was signed with the promise to play him at centre mid (as we were when ox was given the same promise), and initially he wasn't that good at all when Rodgers played him there, but he showed he could put in consistent performances in midfield before and after playing that one brilliant season start to finish at left back. I was pretty prepared for the signing to turn out marginally better than that of Joe cole but he has been as important of a squad member as anybody at the height of our success.

Matip for sure, interesting that he was a player that Edwards, Graham and klopp all had uppermost in their minds when thinking of a center back to buy to replace sakho. Probably the best center back I have seen at bringing the ball out the back and sometimes all the way into the opposition box lol

Hendo captaining possibly our best team ever was also unexpected given he was deemed wholly expendable at one point.

I'm going to put sturridge in here too because at Chelsea and Bolton he looked massively talented but nobody really knew what he could do if he was played centrally on a regular basis instead of out wide like he tended to do with Chelsea. At the height of his powers he was probably the most devastating English striker around, and he really had it all, crazy pace, power, skill, a ridiculous first touch, he could pass or score any kind of goal from any kind of distance, and he has that flair and swagger that makes football a joy to watch. That ability he had to drop a shoulder and change directions to create a window to curl one in the corner in a split second was beautiful to behold every time, he was still pulling off that signature move the very last year he was with us.

If only his body could handle his raw athleticism, I wonder if he would have been able to have a longer career with us now under the slot regime with all their sport science and rehab knowhow, we will never know what heights he still had to reach.

Hendo for sure. Average footballer but led us to win everything.

03 May 2025 11:34:49
Mascherano was my Nans favourite at the time he was such an underrated player. Titi Camara I absolutely loved had a magic about him and a beaming smile.

03 May 2025 11:41:35
Phil Neal came from Northampton town won every trophy numerous times.

03 May 2025 12:10:27
I always worry how players like Alison, Virg, Fab, Robbo, Matip, Gini, Salah, Millie, Bobby and Mane would have coped without Hendo’s leadership.

03 May 2025 12:36:35
Bolo Zenden.

03 May 2025 15:00:43
Rob Jones, Steve Finnan, Jordan Henderson, Sami Hyypia, Alvaro Arbeloa, Andy Robertson, Joel Matip, Gini Wijnaldum, Peter Crouch, Fabio Aurelio and Maxi Rodriguez.

04 May 2025 00:06:34
Robbo, Arbeloa, Crouch, Alonso.
