Here's a fun one in the middle of the Wirtz hysteria, who is the greatest Liverpool signing that never was? Someone who was absolutely nailed on to sign with whom we would of won everything but then never happened.

{Ed001's Note - easy - David Silva.}

Shearer?
Keane?

02 Jun 2025 17:39:23
ED, Can you give me the list of the top ones we came close on?

Can't see anyone beating David Silva but you never know. I might have different opinion of I know who I'm choosing from.

{Ed001's Note - you've put me on the spot there, there have been so many over the years, from Frank Worthington to David Villa. One we came close to getting is about to be put right - Wirtz.}

02 Jun 2025 17:46:42
Michael Laudrup.

02 Jun 2025 17:49:18
Michael Laudrup. One of the absolute greatest footballers ever. We effed that one up.

{Ed001's Note - oh yeah, great one that. What a player he was, but his attitude could leave a lot to be desired at times. Often a bit of a prima donna.}

02 Jun 2025 17:58:01
I know one bullet we dodged and that was lee bowyer.

02 Jun 2025 17:58:40
I've just had to look up Frank Worthington and got this from a Daily Mail article - Ashaggy-maned roisterer renowned for sporting cowboy boots and under-utilising the top few buttons of his shirts, he was also an Elvis Presley devotee who routinely treated team-mates to a rendition of Are You Lonesome Tonight? on away trips.

The irony in that choice of song was palpable, for Worthington was rarely alone of an evening. Here was a man who did not so much play the field as the entire countryside, dating a seeming endless array of models and beauty queens.

Bellingham? Mbappe?

?

But seriously, I personally think that if the board had sanctioned Ged to get CR7 6 months before United did, for around £4-5m ish - he would’ve pushed that team to the premiership….

{Ed001's Note - good shout, Prick Parry kiboshed that deal as £3.6m was too much to pay according to him.}

02 Jun 2025 18:06:29
Both Laudrup brothers, getting Jari Littmanen five years too late. Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Aguero

And of course, Phil Jones.

02 Jun 2025 18:06:45
Yet that same year, his royal prickness sanctioned Diouf, Diao (around £20m for the pair), and Le Tallec and Pongolle for around £2.5m for the pair.

He shoulda sacked off Diouf and the 2 French kiddies and bought CR7 and Anelka for the same price!

Sliding doors moment that added another 15+ years to our wait for a Premier League!

{Ed001's Note - not signing Anelk on a permanent deal has to go down as one of the worst decisions of all time.}

02 Jun 2025 18:29:21
Frank Worthington, there's a blast from the past ?.
I believe he had a medical with us but his blood pressure was high but Shankly still wanted him. The club paid for him to go to Spain to rest up and get his blood pressure down.
Frank Worthington was never going to go to Spain and rest. He came back, had it re-tested and it was higher than it was originally ?.
I was on holiday this time last year with a bloke that played with him at Huddersfield and he said FW was a real character.

02 Jun 2025 18:35:19
We could have had personona.

02 Jun 2025 18:36:49
I thought it was his wages were the issue? We'd have to pay all Houllier's new Zidanes and new Vieiras the same as him.

If he had joined and Rafa had managed to hang on to him until 2009 maybe he'd have given us the extra little push to win the league that season, but with the way we were run, he'd have probably left before really taking off as a player.

02 Jun 2025 18:40:40
Agree that not signing Anelka was a crazy decision, just had a horrible flashback to when we signed Balotelli. There have been plenty of stinkers down the years.

02 Jun 2025 18:52:15
Regarding Roy Keane, I'm sure I remember reading that Clough wanted Dean Saunders in exchange. At the time I remember thinking, he's having a laugh. Blooming heck, if it was true, what an absolute clanger that was.

02 Jun 2025 19:00:03
Gareth Barry.

02 Jun 2025 19:04:46
Ed1 - am I right we came close to Batistuta once?

{Ed001's Note - oh yes, good one.}

02 Jun 2025 19:07:12
Am I right in thinking Batistuta?

02 Jun 2025 19:13:34
You're just copying Shaq to look clever now, aren't you Red Jones ;-)

02 Jun 2025 19:15:43
Remember Ed, it was supposed to be David Silva and David Villa TOGETHER. That would have completely changed the club's fortunes in the late 00s early 10s.

{Ed001's Note - totally transformed us, but if it was just one of the two, Silva was a class apart. I loved him so much as a player.}

02 Jun 2025 19:30:55
Ed agreed and didn't Anelka really want the move? Madness at the time.

{Ed001's Note - yeah, he was very happy in Liverpool and wanted to stay long term. Such a shame.}

02 Jun 2025 19:36:58
Didn't Souness also turn down a certain Danish goalkeeper ?.

02 Jun 2025 19:52:17
Ken. older posters will know who I mean.

Or simao.

02 Jun 2025 20:05:34
If true, I would say Ronaldo CR7 has to be right up there.

02 Jun 2025 20:14:46
Souness turned down chance to sign Cantona, we could of signed silva, aguero, Batistuta, Sheringham, anelka, cr7, simao, vidic, but instead we got dross like diouff, Joe Cole, kromkamp, ngog, baloteli and markovic et al. oh how many leagues and champion leagues we could have won. if only eh.

02 Jun 2025 20:31:43
Frank Worthington. blast from the past . Anelka more recently.

02 Jun 2025 20:37:56
Dani Alves?

02 Jun 2025 22:17:31
Asa Hartford - failed medical due to a hole in the heart.

Nabil Fekir.

02 Jun 2025 23:54:54
Like Ed said, David Silva. It pains me so much watching him play for City when he could've played for us. It's not like City spend big for him either.

02 Jun 2025 23:56:49
Gary Pallister. He was on the cusp of signing for us and then opted for manutd. Shame we would have dominated.
