If leoni is seen as virgil replacement why not just put him ahead of konate? If he's gone in 9 months then make him the backup defender.

My thoughts exactly Coffan. Slot is practical and did this last year with Bradley after Trent announced his departure. I expect as the season rumbles on and Leoni gets a chance to show us his stuff Konate will start playing back up.

I know JG needs to be carefully managed to keep himself fit and available and is needed to cover all the backline but him and VVD is the best CB pairing.

Ultimately if Konate doesn’t sign he’s welcome to try his luck elsewhere, as Ed002 used to remind us, footballers are transient employees and most are quite fickle at the best of times. I think that this summer does at least show there’s ambition and clout to go out and get the best, so there’s every reason to think that adequate replacements will be brought in.

Thanks for sharing, Carra. I had hoped he would renew as I do feel he is showing signs of being more physically robust under Slot. We have bought in his new French teammate, Hugo, plus rumours of Olise next summer.
Why anyone would want to leave this project is beyond me, but each to their own.
Assuming he goes there, Real Madrid would have Trent Konate Huisen - which could have been 3/ 4 of the Liverpool defence if things had worked out differently.
Time to start looking for the perfect foil for Leoni then.

Maybe Chelsea’s 8 year contract strategy has credence when you consider you want to keep someone for 5 years but reality is it’s only worth 3 before itchy feet can set in. If you don’t get something over the line in those 24 to 18 months prior to contract ending, you’re going to see it happen more often where players will bide their time to get a free.

Well Konates agents and himself played us there then, waited until summer window closes so he can leave for nothing, s**t trick from him that, he should of been told, nothing signed by July 31st he will be put up for sale, we have to learn.

Ok Thunder let's keep playing players in the first 11 week in week out every season in the last year of their contract when they have no intention of extending. let's keep losing tens of millions every season (while people still expect big signings) . Or instead let's make a stand and let every player know that its fine if you want to let your contract run out at LFC but by doing so you will be watching others play the big games every week while you give them a rest in the early round of the Cups and dead rubber CL games. If its true about Ibou, a player i have always bigged up i would bench him nd hope Gomez stays fit till January when we can get Guehi. I guarantee if Konate does find himself watching the games from the bench until Xmas he'll be only begging Real to come in for him in January because he won't be going to no WC with France if he's played little to no football.

I'd be playing Gomez over Konate until Jan. As long as he stays fit, Joe is a great player, knows how to play with Virg and is so good on the ball.
Konate can then kiss his WC plans goodbye and wait for a chance to play if/ when he is needed.
Just a shame we didn't get Guehi to slot in straight away.

That's the definition of biting off your nose to spite your face. In the past 5 years we've seen Lallana, Wijnaldum, Origi, Milner, Firmino, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Keita, Thiago and Trent all leave on free transfers and we've just spent over £400 million this summer. We seem to be doing ok. I'm more concerned with Liverpool winning matches and trophies than making money.

It's fascinating to see how many react to this kind of rumour by wanting to punish the player, a response driven by their their emotions.
FSG are businessmen, they'll do what they see is right for the club with emotional detachment. Even if Konate does decided to leave, he won't be benched to satisfy those who feel the need to lash out.

Thats great Thunder, but unfortunately the club is also ran as a"self sufficient"business. All im saying is we need to be known as a club where when your not fully commited you will be behind the ones that are in the pecking order. Konate is the perfect player to make an example of, he's not Virg or Mo. Players should know that if you have a year left at LFC and your not prepared to extend that that's fine but you will spend your last season as backup to players interested in taking the club forward.

Selling him in January is all fine and good, but if he refuses any sale (regardless of the club it is), the club is basically at a disadvantage. There's no benefit to sitting him down on the bench or the U21's, for the second half of the season, when you could use him in case of injuries, illnesses or whatever else.
It used to be that one year, prior to contract expiration, was enough to deal with players and know where you stood. It's clearly not the case anymore. You easily need two years. Player power has increased massively.

I would agree with dropping Konate, bit not to punish the player, he has been a great servant and played very well for the most part during his time with us, if he wants to leave, he is entitled to and so be it. I would drop him out of pure practicality, which with Slot being how he is, is what I predict to happen as per my above. If Konate is not the future, then start prepping for and imbedding that future now. He can always cover while Leoni settles in and if JG gets injured.

FSG will be well used to players seeing out contracts and entering 'free agency'. It's how the American sports model works.
I would imagine the preference will become the same for LFC, in time. After all the transfer prices for the top players are now so ridiculously high that it's going to be much smarter to follow Real Madrid's model.
IE get to a position of strength (top team in your country), buy the very best to strengthen when you get there (Isak, Wirtz etc) Then target elite players at 24/ 25 as their contracts run down/ run out (Guehi? )

Slot will pick what he thinks is the best team to play for each game. Anything else would be stupid. To be fair, I can’t remember the last time a fan, or group of fans, were asked by the club to pick the team for a match.

Not happy we are losing a player to possibly Madrid for free again but if he won’t sign you can’t force him and can’t just drop him because he’s leaving out of spite.
