Having watched the recent England game and hearing how we have another golden generation I decided to compare withn the last Golden Generation
Pickford - Seaman Seaman for me
James - Neville maybe James
Stones - Sol Campbell Sol all day
Mark Guehi - Terry Terry gets my vote
Lewis Skelly -Ashley Cole Cole easy
Rice - Gerard Stevie G 100%
Bellingham - Lampard Fat Frank for me
Foden- Scholes Scholes had it all
Rashford -Rooney Rooney 100%
Owen - Kane - just going Kane
Saka- Beckham maybe Saka
So out of todays crop only 3 make my team.

It is all about balance, to get the best out of the squad. I have yet to witness that in my 30 years of watching England.

Golden generation? Golden shower more like.

08 Sep 2025 19:03:09
I don’t normally watch England nowadays but decided to give it a go on sat. I was very impressed with Adam Wharton. Would love him at Liverpool!

Owen before his injuries was way ahead of Kane because he showed up in big games where Kane is invisible.

08 Sep 2025 19:07:08
Assume joking long thing though Anderson did play well (only one of 2 who seemed to try like they really wanted it) .

08 Sep 2025 19:32:23
Beckham over Saka all day long.

The top 14 players of the 00s golden generation are clear but they had poor squad depth. The current generation has much more depth and options.

Southgate had the perfect mix, good generation and weak opponents. The opportunity was huge and with any half decent manager we win at least one. Our golden generation was against superior opposition. On paper they failed but we were against the Figos, Zidanes and Ronaldo’s of the world.

Now Tuchel is a better manager, but has a poorer mix of players (either too old or young blood) and higher competition.

Tuchel will leave with a worse international record than Southgate and be told he’s the lesser man. In reality Southgate blew the golden opportunity and got a knighthood for the priveage. Football, it’s a funny old game!

Agree with Ernest Millar on that and I’d take peak Owen over peak Kane.

08 Sep 2025 20:38:01
That golden generation England team had some serious talent in it, wasted by the managers trying to please all the big characters though.
The current crop are miles behind being a top team. Tuchel will get them playing better than they should but the talent is lacking all over the pitch for me.
What strikes me is I remember growing up England would always have a top goalie and a really good, solid defensive duo at the back. I remember Ferdinand, Campbell, Terry, Adam’s etc. You just don’t seem to see really good English goalkeepers or defenders anymore. Same goes for strikers as well I suppose, Kane aside (and that’s pushing it now) who would you say was top class?

08 Sep 2025 18:39:11
I can’t stand Owen but I’d pick Owen over Kane everyday of the week.

08 Sep 2025 21:20:13
There’s not 1 out this lot comes close to last lot. Plus the teams the last lot had to face was well better than the opposition these days.

08 Sep 2025 21:33:31
I don’t have the hate for Owen like a lot of Liverpool fans like Torres they both did us a favour when they left because injuries had finished them both. We got the best of Owen he won that FA cup for us and he gave me some great memories but after that hamstring injury against Leeds finished him and he was never the same.

Had the misfortune of watching England the other day. what a horrible game that was . id rather watch paint dry.

Gordon Banks

George Cohen
Jackie Charlton
Bobby Moore
Ray Wilson

Nobby Stiles

Alan Ball
Bobby Charlton
Martin Peters

Geoff Hurst
Roger Hunt

A genuine golden generation and one that good that Jimmy Greaves couldn’t get a game.

I was in the lounge of a guest house in Blackpool with my dad and grandad and a lot of men and boys who were keen to watch them play.

Kane and Owen aren’t fit to lace Greaves’s boots, never mind Sir Roger.

Oh the good old days. quick fag and quick refreshing pint at half time, rub some dirt into the wounds and get back out on the field for some good crunching challenges.

09 Sep 2025 11:51:21
Bobby Moore, Franz Beckenbauer, Bobby Charlton, Sir Roger, Uwe Seeler would be outstanding players in today’s game, all things being equal.

09 Sep 2025 12:33:20
In fairness WDW, Jimmy Greaves was injured for most of the 66 World Cup following a nasty tackle. If he wasn’t injured he’d have played. People tend forget how brilliant he was. Have a look at the types of goals he scored, he was no tap in merchant, he could glide past a few defenders and stick them on their arse, he could hit a long range goal and he was good in the air for his height. Probably the greatest English striker of all time, better than Kane, Lineker, Owen, Keegan et al.

I can’t see anything but a move for Anderson from Liverpool next summer maybe to replace Macca who may want Madrid.
