Just a quick question for everyone, where is the best/most secure parking for the Leverkusen game on Sunday? Would be better to be a close to the ground as poss.

Also good to see Allen signed up and the team looked great the other night can't wait to get the season up and running.

Ashy

On the corner of Oakfield Walton breck road house there he minds your car by flat house pub

The site for the new stadium if you're lucky, otherwise the Old Anfield Comprehensive School opposite, entrance on Eastbound Utting Avenue near to junction with Priory Road.

His tattoo said he was a red,
Dagger, Dagger,
He elbowed Torres in the head,
Dagger, Dagger.
He's tougher than a concrete wall,
yet looks so classy on the ball.
Daniel Agger, Liverpools Great Dane.

Loved this

Love it mate
I would prefer Agger than Dagger though tbh !

Maybe end it with liverpools number 5?

Love it although I think Liverpool's greatest Dane works better

Never even thought about 'greatest' couldnt insult Jan Molby. Sry Dan I know you'll understand. Billy Mc.

Love this.

Here's my thoughts on Allen,

Allen is the equivalent of a custom made suit, yes it's going to cost you more but you know that its going to fit you perfectly. There has been millions of times in the Premier League where (every team guilty) has spent money on players and they haven't been as expected, Allen is not one of these players. He is built for Rodgers style, Rodgers formation and knows him well.

Lets no say how much he's worth now lets see after his Anfield career is over if he was worth the money spent

-McMenemy

Totally Agree McMenemy. Assuming it's a 5 year deal then that's 15 M plus + 10M wages + 2M signing bonus as is being reported.
That 27M for a player that will be 27 years old at the end of this deal. Smart business me thinks.

Was a little uncertain about Allen, but having seen his medical photos, I am comforted by the fact that he wears Armani underwear - hes going to be a champion!

Eds, any Intel on the situation with henderson, think he'll be on his way? Thanks {Ed019's Note - I think he'll stay}

I hope he stays...I think Henderson & Allen are the future of our midfield after Stevie G hangs up the boots...

Eds.I personally think we will sign 3 more players Dempsey ,Walcott and possibly tello loan deal g

ot a feelin both agger and Carroll will stay only Adam out with possibly shelvey loan deal out what do u guys think .great site

QPR have asked if they can take Joe Cole on loan and are prepared to pay his full wages. Billy Mc.

I'm heading to the petrol station as we speak. I like Joe but he isn't built for this system. 4.5M in wages means he needs to be off the books IMO.

I still think we need someone who can fill in for Lucas if he were to go out for an extended period again. If Lucas goes out we don't really have anyone to cover. If we get Sahin, then he and Allen can both play deep but we still wouldn't have someone who could really fill in for Lucas. {Ed019's Note - I think Sahin could do a more than good job, and Allen isn't bad at tackling either..}

Conner coady could step up also

Jpow_LFC

As I recall, Allen was had the 5th most tackles in the PL last season with a something like a 73% success rate. I think he could cover for Lucas quite nicely if he had to.

Ed do think there's a chance of getting mesut orzil on loan i think he is major loan signing if we got him an Walcott or adam Johnson we would win the league defo {Ed019's Note - Nopety No}

10 Aug 2012 22:59:32
Ins :
Fabio Borini - 11million
Joe Allen - 15million

Now we need two wingers and that would do our team for the season unless someone leaves ....

Targets that would be ideal :

- Christian Tello (Loan or 7million giving Barcelona buy back option)

- Kevin Meirelas (10million)

- Theo Walcott (12million)

- Gaston Ramirez (15million)

- John Guidetti (5million If Carroll leaves)

- Adam Johnson (12million could be part of a Agger deal)

- Clint Dempsey (8million)

I would prefer that Liverpool signed :
-Tello (Loan with a option to buy at end of season)
-Sahin(Loan with a option to buy at the end of season)
-Gaston Ramirez(15million)
-John Guidetti(5million)

Player Departures :
- Dirk Kuyt(1million)
- Maxi Rodriguez(free)
- Craig Bellamy(free)
- Alberto Aqualiani(4million)
- Joe Cole(3million)
- Charlie Adam(4million)
- Alexander Doni(free)
- Jay Spearing(loan)
- Andy Carroll(18million)

GK: Reina, Jones, Gulasci
RB: Johnson, Kelly, Flanagan
CB: Skrtel, Agger, Coates, Carragher, Wilson
LB: Enrique, Robinson
DM: Lucas, Allen
CM: Gerrard, Sahin, Henderson, Shelvey
WI: Borini, Ramirez, Tello, Sterling
ST: Suarez, Guidetti, Morgan

12m for walcott are you for real mate lmfao carroll has flopped but according to you hes worth 18m,i even seen someone on this page saying 27m for agger, one things for sure walcott is worth more than carroll or allen

That looks a great team but I would like to see carrol stay, instead of guidetti and have downing as a back up winger

10 Aug 2012 22:54:39
Not sure as to who the signings will be but if there is a clear idea as to the targets of BR it would be players that have alot of pace. Not necessarily pace to run at defenders, but pace to close down opposition. Some say Allan is overpriced. Why? Because he comes froms swansea? This guy is quick. Really quick. And the moment we lose the ball thats when u will see his value. As well as always being available to accept a pass. Sumwhat in a Xavi style of role. There won't be much need for hollywood balls. He will keep it simple and keep possession and the front 3 will keep rotating and running into space.
That is why Carrol will ever fit it. BR's front 3 rotate. Can you really see carroll running down the wing and taking players on?Anyway back to pace. It would be nice to get walcot but if not pato would be awesome.
Or someone in that mould

Interesting post but what about Lucas' lack of pace. BR seems to rate him very highly so maybe pace is not that important

I can honestly say Pato would not be a player I would want playing for Liverpool. Injury prone and his wages are astronomical.

RyanWhittington&hisCat

Good post, totally agree that pace in closing down is equally as important as pace in pushing on.If we could get Wallcot working as well as pushing on we'd be laughing !! B

Good Evening everyone,

Im feeling so confident about our new season, due to our team and how well they played yesterday. I know people will say it was only FC Gomel but they were the type of team's we couldn't beat last season and with all due respect to jonjo shelvey yesterday, a very commited young cm who will do well for liverpool in the future was a weak link in our squad yesterday and now that joe allen is here we could even be better :)

Ramirez, Ramirez, Ramirez! God will everyone shut up about him? talk about flavour of the month! Not denying he's a good player but some LFC fans seem to think he's going to be the second coming, have we even made an offer for him? For that matter have Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal? Don't you think they would if he's a game changer like everyone thinks he is?

I know mate, Ramirez is a great player but so many people think if we don't get him then we are doomed and our whole season is over. Are we even interested? Who knows.

I dont think he would be a worldstar 1. season, but he would surerly add something to our team, and he is still very young. He would have to improve hes workrate but a trio on top with Ramirez, Suarez and Borini would be hard to handle for any defence.

Hey Edds
Just read on SSN that Blackpool had a illegal approach made towards Matt Phillips from an unnamed club. Was wondering if you thought it was LFC (due to a slight interest in the past) and if not then who else do you think it could be?

Bring on the new season, so far so good. Good two signings in the bag and the loan signing or two and also hopefully a couple more signings as well.

10 Aug 2012 22:15:27
I hope the Shelvey is given some looks now that Allen is on board. He played well last night and was a refreshing change to Henderson from the first leg. Being in the US I have had the benefit of watching all of the games to date and he has been a quick adopted of BR's style and is a true attacker. I know that a loan could be in the cards to get him some more games but I hope he sticks around.

DT

Agree about Shelvey - have seen a few negative posts about how we always overpay for players - at 2m I think Shelvey could prove to be an absolute bargain in a couple of years time

I don't understand why he can't backup Lucas instead of Spearing. He is bigger, stronger, faster and more skilled than Spearing.

In my mind Shelvey would fit best into the role Gerrard is in now, rather than sitting deep alongside Lucas. He naturally wants to attack rather than sit back, while Allen fits into a role we need perfectly.

Shelvey is most definitely not a defensive mid. He's good at a lot if things, but tackling is not one of them. Henderson could maybe be converted to this but Allen can also play CDM quite comfortably.

Yes agree with poster #4. Shelvey is a very attack minded midfielder. and i still think he can be a good player, hes fitting in very well, he suits the more advanced role of midfielders.

Kaizer

Yes Shelvey is natural attacker, i think also he could link up well in the front trio playing maybe with suarez and borini?

10 Aug 2012 21:50:50
I think Walcott would fit well on that Right hand side. I don't think we need many more signings but I'd like to have a back up left back and a back up striker. Sell Andy Carroll for about 18m and then we're sorted.

BthekingB

Would tend to agree. Someone to compete with Downing for the RF slot (maybe a Tello, Dempsey, or Walcott) I think would be good. Not sure a backup striker is needed, though, as Borini can play there as could any of the hypothetical 3 above.

My opinion is the top 3 are, or at least should be, pretty much interchangeable with no one really being a 'striker' per se. This is something Swansea wasn't quite able to achieve last season in my opinion, thus there somewhat poor goal return and limited ability to finish. In other words, Borini/Suarez/Downing/Sterling is vastly superior to Sinclair/Routledge/Dyer/Graham.

Then in the mid we've got Lucas for Britton (big improvement there, although Britton isn't half bad) and Gerrard for Siggurdsson (another vast improvement).

Defense is obviously improved as well with better RB/LB attacking coverage.

Overall, I'm pretty happy. Thought BR had the Swans playing very nice football with relatively limited players and am excited to see what he can do with LFC!

Walcott is brutal, Arsenal fans would be delighted to take 15m for him

Isn't Robinson going to be back up LB or will he go off on loan this season?

Keith

We need Walcott for the first 11 and then some like Mirallas & Quaresma as further attacking options for a stronger squad.

We also need someone like Sahin(AM) to come in on loan to provide a class alternative to Gerrard otherwise we run the risk of burning him out.

in
Borini - £10m
Allen - £13m + £2m sign on fee
Walcott - £13m
Mirallas - £6.5m
Quaresma - £6.3m
Sahin - Loan
£40.9m

out
bellamy - £2m
kuyt - £1m
carroll - £17m
adam - £6m
spearing - £3m
maxi
aurelio
aquilani
doni
£29m + all that freed up wages...!!

Then we would look something like this

Reina
Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique
Lucas, Allen
Gerrard
Walcott, Suarez, Borini

GK; Jones, Gulacsi
RB; Kelly, Flanagan
LB; Robinson
CB; Coates, Carra
CM; Henderson, Shelvey
AM; Sahin
WF; Downing, Quaresma
CF/FWD; Mirallas

To me that would make for a good, strong & stable squad or at least the foundations will be set with a squad that is technically able to perform the way it should according to the manager.

Thoughts?..

10 Aug 2012 20:34:35
Hello Ed's, Just wondering if Liverpool may be interested in Jordan Rhodes from Huddersfield? hes a good young prospect.

10 Aug 2012 19:08:36
Ed(s) with Maxi, Dirk, Bellers and Aqau leaving. How much did we free up from a wage perspective? Granted its proably sunk with Suarez, Borini and Allen. Thanks! {Ed019's Note - Around 350k p/w}

I think less than half the amount saved in wages on those who've left has been sunk into the wages of the 3 players stated.

RedSG

Suarez increase of 80k plus Allen 45k plus Borini 40k still saves us about 200k per week

But you also have to think that Aquilani had two years on his contract.

10 Aug 2012 17:36:18
Eds would a figure of around 300k a week be a realistic estimate of the combined salaries of aquilani, kuyt, maxi, aurelio and Bellamy? That would have been over 15 million a year just on basic wages. Just goes to show how much can be accounted for without player sales or just simply how stupid we have been in the past paying such ridiculous sums. Borinis first season including full transfer fee could be covered by their wages alone. It's no surprise we were close to oblivion only two years ago.

Cheers
Greggers {Ed019's Note - More}

10 Aug 2012 22:20:53
Hope if carroll goes to newcastle we can get ba in return. He would fit in well as he is unselfish and then we could have ba, borini and suarez all interchanging as a front 3. Having downing in there is not working because when suarez comes to his flank he doesn't know how to run the center forward channels like borini.

Ba isn't even a good player, his form on the second half of the season showed he isn't consistent at all and Carroll actually contributes more.

Oh and he can only play in one position, so he would not fit in any better than AC...

10 Aug 2012 19:01:16
Ed oo2 why would lucas ocampos sign for monaco when they play in the french ligue 2? Just a thought eh! {Ed002's Note - Good offer, nice location.}

Why would anyone want to move to liverpool and play for a team in decline

Because still opposition fans come to our rumour site instead of thier scum or chelski sites, where as we LFC fans dont give s*** about your team

The second poster is right - why would anyone want to play for Everton?

cozinoz

10 Aug 2012 21:59:31
miised the game last night, heard suarez had a blinder, did he play on the right of a front 3? or did BR play 4-4-2?
any insight appriciated, cheers {Ed019's Note - Everywhere mate, free role}

Suarez was all over the pitch in a good way. He was exceptional and was in fine form. He was wrongly judged offsides at least twice and deserved to be on the scoresheet. Then again, I'll happily take two assists a game from him. Gerrard, Borini and Suarez had great linkages. I know it was only Gomel but it was refreshing to watch!

Yeah the top 3 were constantly alternating positions - incredible to watch

Hi Ed's. Great site. Addicted to it. Interesting times ahead. Its early days yet but im impressed with Borini. He reminds me of John Aldridge. Hes always playing on the defenders shoulder, looking to get in behind. A clever little nuisance. Him and Suarez together are gonna be some headache for centre backs. Midfield looks strong now. Defence is strong. We need width on the left side. Id love mirallas and another striker. What do you think our priorities are now? Any idea what the club are after now? Striker or Wingers or both? Fair play to you's great site.

In theory, it was a 4-3-3 with Borini/Suarez/Downing being the top 3.

Suarez was good. Borini was good. Even Downing was pretty good. You would be hard pressed I think to find anyone on the starting team who played poorly really. As others have mentioned, movement on top, particularly between Suarez, Borini, and Gerrard, was impressive.

In theory if you watched the gane is was a bit of everything,4-3-3, a bit of 4-2-4, a bit of 2-2-6 or maybe it was 2-2-3-3 or 2-1-3-4 etc...do i need to go, anyone of the players has the license to go forward, it was amazing to watch, the front 4 could basically interchange whenever they wanted and it resulted in some amazing play!! I'm loving it :D

10 Aug 2012 21:17:42
From the pictures of joe allen's medical on the lfc website it looks like his old team mate Scott Sinclair has donned a pair of glasses to perform the tests. I'm not one for conspiracies but........

I can confirm it was sinclair doing the medical.i was outside melwood today, and from the grassy knoll i was standing on,i could clearly see it was him.

Hi eds

Just on the Gomel match, I still think we need goals. Borini is a better player than I thought, but I don't see him getting 15-20 goals a season at this time. Any rumours of a striker that can get the goals? {Ed019's Note - Dempsey}

Suarez should get over 20 this season, Borini should get a fair few, and Gerrard playing more advanced should get a few..
Because of the players we are linked with and the way we will play I believe more goals will come collectively, not just relying on one striker, we will have a fair few options up front...
Cal

I wreckon suarez 15-20 goals this season, borini about 10 goals, if we get dempsey then 10-15 goals, gerrard 10 goals, and then a few others pitchin in with the 1-5 goals or 5-10 goals this season.

Borini should achieve 10-15 goals plus 10 assists over the season, Suarez should reach 20+ and Gerrard will probably get around 10 if he stays fit. The other forward could vary, I see Walcott assisting alot more than Dempsey but not scoring as many goals.

I think Johnson and downing will get 8together. Aswell.
AnfieldUSA

Walcott gets and makes goals

Qauresma makes them

Sahin makes them

Often on here I see people complaining about players being overpaid for...
Even with Allen and Borini who haven't had a chance to prove themselves!
One bit i'm especially angry at is Coates being listed as 7m..
7m is hardly breaking the bank, the kid is young backing up 2 fantastic centre backs, he scored one of the goal of the seasons and won Best Young Player in Copa America before he joined...
At 7m can someone explain WHY we have "overpaid" for him, because I can't justify it...
Get behind the team and don't keep b*tching about the price tag, especially for those who aren't a flop, especially haven't had a chance to flop...
Sorry for ranting..
Cal

Yeah I agree Coates for 7m or P.Jones for 18 or 20m?

the game he had against Chelsea i thought was his best in a red shirt, where he cleared every ball that came in the box and always tackled someone just on the edge of the box (he fouled Torres also..hehe) agree?

Spot on Cal.

If Coates didn't already play for us - the same people who are whinging about him now, would be whinging that we hadn't signed him - for the reasons you've stated.

They just don't have a clue.

It's fantastic that we have Coates imo. He could be a legend, and I expect him to push Skrtel (who gave away some stupid free-kicks v Gomel - some old habits die hard) for a place this season.

A steal a £7m - We can thank Kenny for that one.

BH YNWA

7m is nothing in the current transfer market...when you factor in that the player is young and a regular international and has the potential to be the best defender in the world... that's a ridiculous bargain

10 Aug 2012 21:40:05
Hi ed are you like me and having a very good feeling about Allen. He's going to be a legend {Ed019's Note - Yep}

I would like sahin as well though and let Adam and spearing go. Allen brilliant at short passing and pressing the ball. Sahin is also a really good keep ball player but also could be our quarter back that we haven't had since alonso.

10 Aug 2012 21:25:32
Agger's not going anywhere. BR is handling the media perfectly. For a player to be sold the club needs to accept a fee yes but the player would also have to agree to move. So even if another team bids 100 million if Aggar want to say no and run out his contract with us he can. BR is making a statement to Aggar and all other Liverpool players that 1. We cannot afford to pay u what some other clubs are willing to. 2. If a high enough bid comes in which is of higher value than what we think you're worth to this club then we'll accept it. 3. BUT We have told you and the media of what a great asset u are to us and how we want you here. So yes we may accept a bit. But if you love this club. Then u would not be interested in moving...
This way you create a squad who will play for the shirt and not a bunch of mercenaries. And if a player chooses to chase the cash. We dont need merceraries cos here we play for the shirt... Seems to have worked. Rather have the player not be interested than holcing back a player who wants to leave, affecting his moral and the teams. Modern day Shankly... There will be a stand named after him. Watch this space..

Bellers totally honest classy guy, hope he gets Cardiff to the premiership, may pop down cardiff to watch him play.

Good luck just a bit disappointed that Rafa sold him when he did we missed his best years.

Rafa you got that one wrong big time

Good luck Craig

Evered

Not only this one

Bellers left when torres was on his way to us dont think rafas decision was that wrong as we got what turned out to be the worlds best at the time

Lol Rafa sold him because he chased John Arne Riise with a golf club, simple as!

RedKopite

Agree there, mate. Bellamy will be remembered fondly for his enthusiasm, passion and abilty. However, his departure is right for him, Liverpool and Cardiff. Raheem Sterling will step easily into his shoes....job done!
With Kuuyt,Maxi,Bellamy and Aquilani gone (and hopefully Cole) we will save some serious dosh in wages and the impact on results won't be too great.
Joe Allen and Fabio Borini are good signings but the best business we've done so far is keeping Luis Suarez for the foreseeable future.
Personally, if we get £20m+ for Danny Agger, I'd go for Gaston Ramirez and Clint Dempsey plus one or two "squaddies" to cover DM and the wings. Decent prospects from around the globe to enhance our overall set-up.
I think it'd be premature to sell Andy Carroll this Summer as I believe he still has a lot to give, but we have to consider anything over £18m surely?
If he goes I would like the £18m to be re-invested in the team as Brendan sees fit.
We aren't too far from challenging but we are still repairing the damage inflicted by Benitez (3 managers ago!).
By that I mean that our "wage structure" spiralled out of control (El Zhar was on superstar wages and his only contribution was a goal against Cardiff City in the League Cup. Degen, Voronin, Riera etc. were all crap but on massive money etc.)
Anyway, Rafa's history. Brendan Rodgers is the present and the future (maybe even the past if comparisons to Bill Shankly prove founded).
I for one am massively excited at the prospect of the "big-spenders" chasing us next season. I don't give a toss about Citeh, Chelski, the Arse, Scum or anybody else. The men of the match last night were the supporters. Our "twelvth man...Hickin' superb!!....If we can keep that level of support up against crappy teams we'll do okay. We always beat the good teams at home, but struggle against the lower ones. I've a feeling Brendan will change that philosophy.
From what I've seen I'm encouraged. Two games, two wins. But, more than that, a togetherness and belief we have been yearning for for years.
Kenny Dalglish stepped up to the plate and did a superb job of stabilizing the squad. Thanks Kenny.
However, the time was ripe for a visionary...a man who could handle the press (important), buy and sell players for the greater good of his vision, set up the team to it's maximum potential and empower the fans (the life-blood).
The future's bright, the future's Warrior red. Whatever that is.

i dont think there will be many more signings team so far to start

reina
johnson skrtel agger enrique

allen lucas gerrard

downing borini suarez

subs, cole sterling hendo kelly adam spearing
morgan carroll shelvey

now unless some1 gets sold i really dont see players coming in mayb sum1 on loan, but to be honest i think that team is strong and i do like it,

eds can ye please post this i would just like to see what every1 has to say if they agree with me or not
thanks great site eds

Rodgers has hinted Borini's long term future lies on the left of the front 3, if I remember correctly, just so you know (: But yes it looks really good
Cal

Add Dempsey and Ramirez/Walcott and we'd had a strong squad.
TT

Nice starting line up, but carra or coates will defo be subs, not sure morgan or sterling will get in match day squad much this season but will be next season, downing will have to perform week in week out to keep his place because i`m still hoping for another winger to come in

I would get rid of cole and buy another winger or striker.
The team does look a lot stronger on paper though doesn't it.
That midfield 3 is going to be as good as anyone else's this season.
If the defence plays like last year then that's top notch.
The forward 3 looks good on paper but downing might just carry his crap form into this season, borini is still young, as is sterling, Carroll has a lot to prove, Coles crap and Suarez is prone to getting himself into trouble.
Hopefully we will bring in Dempsey for experience, goals and work ethic, and tello for a bit of flair on the wing.

MIKEY

I'd say there will be another 5 including a loan or 2.

I think there will be another 2 or 3 signings - I still think AC will leave and so see another striker coming in as well as a wide player. That team does look strong but the subs maybe not. Jan

I think gerrard will be part of the front 3. so that to means the midfield will be lucas, allan and other. Henderson, Shelvey and Suso would battle it out for me but think we'll push to get Sahin or similar type player. Also hope and think a forward/winger will come in.
CQ

Swap ramirez for downing and put borini out wide

Macca said possibly 4 signings and Allen + the infamous, mysterious loan, so people saying there will only be one or two more might want to think again- there may not be that many but there will certainly be a few.

We have signed the welsh Xavi, the next Iniesta, Pirlo, Gerrard, Alonso or the next Bruno Cheyrou?
Esna

10 Aug 2012 21:33:07
Do you think it's plausible that Allen will start in the friendly on Sunday?

Also I know people are saying that FSG don't have money to put into the market but after the Allen signing I think that is not true. To me they have just learned their lesson and wont just pay absurd amounts for every player we want but instead only on players that are neccesary. But I may be wrong who knows.

Can't believe we paid more for Allen than manu paid for Kagawa!!
Esna

Get over it kagawa was in the last year of his contract and therefore easier to get

We paid more because he's a lot better.

MIKEY

Who cares? we got Allen who we wanted they got Kagawa. If he's that good drive down the M62 and watch him every other week! - TMac

Time will tell who has got the better deal but until then I think we should be positive and not start comparing players prices especially as we know little about Allen and SFA about Kagawa

I like (well, liked) Kagawa quite a bit, but he's a totally different player to Allen. Allen plays the middle of a string of 3. At Swansea, it was:

Siggurdsson
Allen
Britton

Here it'll likely be:

Gerrard
Allen
Lucas

Kagawa plays more the Gerrard/Siggurdsson role as a CAM and I don't think he could do what Allen can do (or vice versa, really). Plus he wanted to go to United, not us, so that pretty much sums up that one.

Probably kagawa is not as good as Allen?

I tend to agree that there has been some good value in the market this season. But I think in terms of Liverpool we are buying younger plays in a more rebuilding pattern than say Man U or Arsenal who have bought older players to compete with now

Manchester United have bought Kagawa (23) and Powell (17)? They have certainly not been investing in older players...

Kagawa made it known he wanted to leave for united only...made it easier for them to get a reduced price...Rodgers believes that Allen is worth his transfer clause valuation...and I'm not the only one who agrees ...

Hi Guys

Not trying to gloat however i posted the following last november and got slated for it, and now its all come true. Watched him for Swansea numerous times at the Liberty and was impressed by his quality and movement every time, hence the post.
Also said after the world cup that Suarez was a player we all should watch. However never rated Carroll or Adam.

27 Nov 2011 13:42:45
Liverpool should put a bid in for Joe Allen of Swansea, a little gem of a young player, one for the future, always plays the Liverpool way, pass and move. Only 21

Evered

Well done mate. Good shout.

How exactly is this not gloating?

Well spotted

Well I posted this a while ago....

I really like that laddie Dalglish fae Celtic - reckon he could be some player, but ah'm no sure aboot his TV skills....

Well let's be honest people come on here and have a pop and claim to be itk. Daglish was manager u prob thought it was Jan window and Joe Allen wouldn't have been of serious contention at the time.maybe he was but that was a guess for the wrong window get real

Special note for Glenn Johnson, lots of people moaning about him and wanting him sold. He proved last night that he fits Rodgers style of play perfectly.

1st city
2nd man utd
3rd chelsea
4th livrpl
5th spurs
6th everton

m damn sure {Ed049's Note - Arsenal?}

No way will Everton be in the top 6. More like 9th or 10th.

I have the gut feeling this is the very season when united will be struggling. praying for them to get out of the top 4 and in all fairness I think Arsenal will still be sniffing around the 4th position. I would like to see us pusihing united out of the top 4 :-)

City
Chelsea
United
Liverpool
Arsenal
Everton
Newcastle
Spurs

I hope the spuds crash and burn...

Think Chelsea may well be city's closest challengers. It smacks to me of desperation when one of manu's two signings to date is a lad from Crewe ( i know we wanted him as well) and they are looking at paying massive money for and to a 29 year old with a poor injury record who just happened to have a massive season when his contract is running down. I hope they do get RVP - I think it will make the Carroll deal look like a decent bit of business. I think if Berbatov was English there would be a lot more made of the fact that a guy they paid 30m for cant get a game, cant get another club willing to pay him the same money so they will probably have to let him go for nothing.

Sorry for the rant ed's but some people on here completely p**s me off sometimes!

I posted s genuine statement last night about Scott Sinclair joining city in the next few days. Now time will tell whether my source was correct but the link appears to be gathering pace. However I was slated for saying I had no information about whether this would lead to Adam Johnson leaving for Liverpool.

Next time I'll just make stuff up shall I like alot on here??

p.s. Liverpool will get 25million plus xavi, inesta, and messi for Charlie Adam. Barca are big admirers! That better?

Cheers ed's, keep up the good work {Ed049's Note - why don't you sign off your post?}

He had previously expressed a desire to extend his stay at Swansea, as recently as during the olympics so that's why some people could see it as unlikely
Cal

Sorry ed.....forgot.....

Andy

Totally agree cal and thanks for the reply. I have no problem with people finding it hard to believe (each to their own) and I guess we'll find out if my source is correct or not. I just didn't appreciate the comments because I said I had no information about Adam Johnson!
Andy

Yeah I see your point, people expect people to know EVERYTHING on here, they should be thankful for any info. they receive..

Joe Allen. Decent player. But £15m - really? I mean really?

It's happened again. It's an utter joke, the amount of money Liverpool have spent on these highly overrated players in recent times. I know there's the joke which compares the prices of players to that of Downing and Henderson, but in all honesty it's beyond funny now.

Since Hodgson took over, the only player signed who would stand a chance of getting into the teams above Liverpool in the table is Luis Suarez. Money has been, thus far, wasted on players such as Henderson (£16m), Downing (£20m), Meireles (£11.5m) and Carroll (£35m). I know it's easy to say that 'Carroll is a working progress', and I could accept that. If he cost about £30m less. That sort of money pays for immediate results, and as a striker that means goals. For a midfielder, that means assists and game-changing performances. Undeniably, thus far the only truly good performance from Downing has been his one in the Carling Cup final - against Cardiff City. £20m for a good 120 minutes is an atrocious return. Yes, I'm well aware Meireles scored the winner against Chelsea. But £11.5m for a season's service?

It seems that whether the manager is current England manager Roy Hodgson, King of the Kop Kenny Dalglish or new kid on the block Brendan Rodgers, the transfer system is real thing in need of a review.

Meireles been sold £12m. so don't cry for that.

Sir Alex stop worrying, we may not win the league this year, and if it makes you feel better Cleverly is a top player as we saw in the Olympics, NOT!!

Crawl back under your stone, troll. 15million for this kid will prove to be money very well spent, he's exactly what we need to get us ticking like a precision timepiece. Didn't we receive roughly the same fee for meirelles from Chelsea that we paid for him?
Stop whining like a pissy child, get behind the team, support the manager like a true red or disappear please. There's something in the air at anfield again and it doesn't need ruining by your putrid BS spouting.

The captain

Did you even watch the game last night? Rodgers had the current team playing their a**es off, passing beautifully and keeping possession he clearly knows what he's talking about - and before you say it was only Gomel, we all know the top teams have never been an issue for us...save your moaning until we at least have an indication of where we are heading this season. Allen may flop, he may be amazing, give him a chance before slating him. Either that or save your comments and let the rest of us get on with enjoying the success of last night and being excited about what the new season may bring

Super

Get over yourself. It's not your money. Brits come at an overrated premium price and every new manager raids his old club to poach somebody who knows his ways. Why not give Rodgers and FSG a go instead of havin a moan. We've got enough haters from other clubs without our own 'supporters' havin a pop...

What's wrong with Allen at £15 million? A young, quality midfielder who will slot in seamlessly alongside Lucas and Gerrard.

Kev.

Love how you all assume I'm a Liverpool fan. Not once did I use pronouns such as 'we' or 'us'. I was simply saying, from a football fan's perspective, that money may not be an object to teams like City and Chelsea, which is why when they make their occasional poor signing for big money, it goes under the radar because it's just money from the owner's loose change. But when a team not in that financial situation is splashing the cash consistently on average (note how I never said they were bad) players, it's a simply awful transfer system.

If you are not a Liverpool fan, why do you even care then?

Didnt Meireles also get into a team above us?

I think Allen is the perfect link in our midfield alongside Lucas and Gerrard, and more importantly so does BR.

I also think we will see Downing playing with more confidence this season.

I for one, trust the managers judgement and am optimistic for the season ahead.

Also dont understand why you would spend time writing a post detailing your concerns on our "transfer system" and spending if you dont support our club. Too much time on your hands?

Strabs

BTW the guy who called u sir alex knew instantly that you were manc scum :) so go and f*** of back home.

We assume your a Liverpool fan because your on the Liverpool site.
But ok we paid 35 million for Carroll because we were desperate (oh wait didnt we say 15 million for Torres plus whatever Newcastle ask for Carroll) so Chelsea got their pants pulled down.
Most British players prices are hyped up yet you focus on negatives what about the price we paid for Shelvey, looks like money in the bank for me.Lucas another winner.
So theres positive and negatives in all teams transfer dealings.Name me a team that hasnt made some dodgy transfers because I cant think of one.
You have a point but lets not try to make as big of a deal out of it.

Kopping a feel

15 mil for 10 playing years, id say money well spent

Didn't we sell mirellas to Chelsea...are the European champions not a top team?

Irish Al

Dont think the allen deal can be slated too much we had to meet release clause besides english players are always far too much but we have over spent in the past currently its hard to say whether or not rodgers is well have to wait and see on future deals

Is he not in the Welsh Team?

eds is the player we are trying to loan 1 of kaka, sahin, or tello? {Ed049's Note - Yes, Macca did say that we're trying to bring Sahin and Tello on loan}

10 Aug 2012 20:32:22
I believe too many fans on this site concentrate on bringing in new players(which I know is important) but don't consider the impact of the new manager's tactics and training, Liverpool F.C. have some very talented players already, players with abilities that I personally feel have not been used to there full potential. Combine that with a more attacking formation and attitude and I'm hoping we'll see us push back into the top four.
I was unsure about Brendan Rodgers when he first became manager, I watched a few Swansea games last season and was impressed but that's as far as it went, but since he's joined I've gone out of my way to watch every interview, read everything I can online and in the tabloids and I must say I am happy with the job he's done so far and confident that if given time and backing by the owners and the fans we all could be on to a winner with Mr. Rodgers.
Oh and my final rant lol...I don't mind people being critical about things at the moment(not a fan of rude though) just as long as once the season kicks off we all get behind the team..and stay behind them all season, last year some of the fans acted disgracefully, slagging off the manager and players...we are supporters..we support through thick and thin, why is that so hard for some fans to understand?, we use to be known has the best fans not sure if that is true anymore.

Bazingaa

Unfortunately you're right...Liverpool fans are becoming described as whingers..not that I'm all that worried but I hate all the negativity! This season will be an improvement as will next...BR has the potential to be here for a long time!

Irish Al

Your basing the fact that liverpool may not have the best fans in the world through one liverpool fan site really?

10 Aug 2012 20:30:23
Any1 tell me what number shirt Allen will we're next season or am I jumping the gun a bit.

No offence eds but you would have thought the first port of call to check some things would be the official site

10 Aug 2012 20:11:20
Is Allen better than Henderson when Henderson was at Sunderland? Personally I think there on par.
Bellamy gone means we need cover for his place. I personally believe we are two clogged in midfield and I would keep Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Adam, Shelvy and now Allen.
Cole, spearing I'm on the fence with.
No one works harder or tries his best in every game as much as spearing. His height maybe an issue with most but his determination and passion is overlooked.
These are just my opinions.

I'm sorry but determination and passion isn't good enough for top 4 in the current situation that there are potentially 7 teams possible of getting top 4. If we can get 2 mil it'd be better for us and better for him as he'd actually get game time.

BthekingB

Why dont they sign me then if they match my £22k a year im sure I could show bags of determination and passion too, but trouble is just like spearing I'd still lack the eye for a pass, tackling and technical ability that spearing does, on the plus side I'd be cheaper and better looking and I'm not vertically challenged either!

Dont think we should keep Adam - defensively very poor, no pace and hence wont fit in to BR's system

Stopped reading when you said Allen and Henderson were on a par.

10 Aug 2012 20:00:17
Eds can u please tell me what was the transfer fee for Allen? {Ed049's Note - 15million Pounds.}

just like to wish all the best to bellers, terrific player always gave 110% for the club. sad to see him go but understand his reasons for wanting to.

10 Aug 2012 16:29:34
Eds, Do you know the length on Cole's contract? Do you see him staying here or leaving with Rodgers clearout of older players? {Ed001's Note - 2 more years, and Rodgers likes him, he will get until January to prove himself I expect.}

I really hope not Ed001!

Tiki Taka "started" as soon as BR took over mate, not reliant on one player, but with Allen I suspect we will see it more fluidly

Site seems a little slow today eds, problems? Just wondering with these reports of agger leaving, is it just a case of failing to find a buyer for andy carroll, who i would like to stay one more season at least by the way n now trying to fund moves for other players by selling our best centre back in agger? Seems crazy to me, i believe his injuries are behind him now n just needs regular football week in week out n will no doubt be one of the best defenders we have ever had! Surely selling the likes of adam, cole, spearing, wilson, jones, flanagan n so on would make more sense to fund for a player or two? Agger clearly loves liverpool n us fans clearly love him, we aren't a selling club n never will be, agger has ynwa tattooed across his knuckles, nice tattoo by the way, anyone know what font that is as i wouldnt mind that myself? He will never walk alone as us fans walk beside him, we need our loyal players with us, not strengthing the teams we are aiming to catch in the future! In rodgers we trust we keep saying but lets hope the club do the right thing! Agger is a legend in the making!!!

Welcome to LFC Joe Allen. This will be a great Signing. Also good luck to Bellamy.

10 Aug 2012 19:49:19
Allen is an LFC player, I for one am quite excited....

10 Aug 2012 19:48:31
Why does Rodgers keep going after former players? Borini and now Allen. Does he not realise that there is much better players out there and they're not as dear as those 2. Borini is worth nowhere near 11m and the same goes for Allen and his 15m price tag.

Why does our club always overpay for average players? Adam 7m Coates 7m Downing 18m Henderson 20m Carroll 35m... Its madness.

Borini and Allen will not improve us, Borini has played 33 games in 5 years and he commands an 11m price tag. Crazy. 85% of Joe Allens passes last season were in his own half, To his defence and to his keeper. Worth about 5m at most

These 2 signings just tells me what i already knew, Brendan Rodgers is a small time manager with a big mouth, He will fail and then we will be back to the drawing board. No faith in FSG, Henry and especially Rodgers.

Gary YNWA

Does writing YNWA qualify you as being a LFC fan. I smell an imposter, either support the team or do one.

Both are excellent signings.

Papa G

Go home mate u have no idea

Wish I had some of your positivity! :S

Gary mate, get a clue, allen will be class, and seeing suarez with borini the other night was class

"I can't wait to experience the famous Liverpool support." - Joe Allen in today's interview.

Glad you're showing him what we're all about there Gary.

Macalalli, Dunga, Sena, did same job for years and there considered worldys! Not saying he's in that class but what he does, he does better than some of Barca's players on stats... And if he knit our play together as Alonso did (minus the 30 yard passes which I don't think he possesses) then I'll be happy

Don't agree mate. Realistic targets, Allen will hit the ground running with BR tactics. Borini is a poaching CF that we desperately need. Have faith it's looking alright.

We shall see

I have no faith that you're a Liverpool supporter and doubt you're even called Gary. These posts are getting pretty funny always mention 'small time' and always a single name followed by 'YNWA'. Come on try harder.
CQ

You can take YNWA off the end of your name for a start.

Whoops you have put ynwa after your name, silly you... oh this is Liverpool page as well, let you off this time.
John

I laughed when I read this(no offense) but putting YNWA beside your name doesn't make you a Liverpool supporter, is there anything about the club you do like?

Bazingaa

Don't wright YNWA after your name person!
Your not worthy enough to say the words!
Also Rodgers knows what players he wants to play his style! Would u prefer hazard an Cavani there lazy players who won't be told... They just play there own game. The players were bringing in our young an fit you'll see top 4 easy this year!

Gary. gary. gary. why do you even bother...

Gary why on earth do people like you slag off players, managers and owners and then insist on placing YNWA after your name? Do you know what it means at all?

Get behind the team and the whole team owners to groundsmen, our club LFC and everybody involved should know our support and feel that they never walk alone

Come on redmen

Did you watch us last night mate ? Borini and Suarez looked class together and we need someone like Allen not only is he good we need a good squad so if your not gonna say something nice don't say nothing atall!

Do you support Liverpool or what ? you sound like a Scum UTD fan with such negative out of order comments ! we cant afford to buy trophys like Man s***ty or Chelski we play to win !

Maybe he prefers to buy players that he already knows as it is less of a gamble. He will already know their strengths and potential instead of forking out on a relatively unknown player where the chances of them flopping like Aqua are much higher?

You must be a manc fan
Both signings are very good signings, back the team or get lost"its simple"

Watch a rerun of the match, you'll see although we're not the finish article you can definately see what direction we're heading, and I think its looking good.

Name a better young central midfielder than Joe Allen who won't cost more than 15 mil and who would fit into the system? He is here for years upon years and he's absolutely quality. I believe it was a bargain!

I take it this is Garry the bitter

If I remember correctly when Rodgers came in he said 'I know a few players who can come in and improve the squad'...maybe he meant literally? That would explain Borini, Allen, $igurd$$son!

Great display last night, at the end of the day you can only beat whats put in front of you but in the past we have struggled against the lesser sides. Gerrard looked really at home in what looked like a free role, long may that continue.

Allen now on board & hopefully with a 2-3 more to come we'll have a strong squad.

love how mancs are laughing at the allen fee, they're teh ones who bought carrick for 18m and hargreaves for 20m.

huxleypig

Ye forgot anderson 20 mill

The thing is, Allen would walk into their midfield, and they know that.

Yeah but carrick and hargreaves won the league, we didnt

Also Anderson for about £18million!

Square tomato

Carrick is hardly a failure though is he, he's a key man in midfield. Hargreaves was a brilliant player he was just unlucky with injury. You take the mick and yet your midfield isn't even half as good.
Sparky

Anderson, Veron.........

JRG

You forgot Veron,28m I think it was, that .was one of bacon face's finest moments

How much they pay fr Anderson again? Or veron?

Jayblair89

Dont forget berbatov, they ll lose about 28 million on him, they have short memorys have the followers of castle greyskull,i hear its falling down.!

20 million plus on anderson as well

Nani and Anderson are both rubbish and they cost a combined £35million

They laugh at the fee but they don't laugh at the player. They know he's good especially in a midfield 3 of Lucas and gerrard (far superior to anything at Swansea or cleverly and ramsey). We will get the last laugh

Traore won the Champions League and Cantona didn't. What's your point?

Aqulani 18m
Johnston 18m
Keane 20m

LFC Laughing stock

Veron 28million will always be funny heh heh! & the encore! kleberson djemba dhemba & the player the media have forgot andersson heh heh!

And there trying to buy RVP, that'll cost them 25mill, for a 29 year old, bit steep, especially with his injury record.

sooty

LFC Laughing stock? HAHA only Aquilani is a failure there, we only lost 5m on Keane and Johnson has been the best RB in the league. Where as Anderson, Carrick, Hargreaves and Bebe have been absolue failures and would struggle to get into most top half teams squad.

We have one of the best Midfields in the league, the best defence and a great attack

Taibi, the little Michael Jackson twins, Anderson, djembe djemba, prunier, blomqvist, carrick, kleberson, jordi cryuff, poborski, that's gotta be up there with money well spent sir whiskey nose, oh yea and schoolers out of retirement worked!! NOT

Dont forget kleberson, dea gea

Oh and don't forget the £10mil spent on bebe based on YouTube...that's hilarious!

Or are you lot on about manager mode on FIFA 12

Tree Blue

Why don't you comment on your own teams site? Oh wait you have only signed one player who cost you over £2 million more than you sold him for. Good business that!

Heh heh! & you will win what eh? Everton always cheer me up! Bill kenwright (impressario)

Isn't there anything going on over the park ? Small time

Got to be a bitter or a scum fan with that rant,#### off to your own site, I wouldn't dream off going onto a rivals site and reading the posts, quite pathetic really.

You lost blue? Or worried? Or just insecure about your own team? Not sure which sort of blue you are, and don't care. Do one, and we'll see you later in the season...
BigBadBen

Another bitter toffee, the bargain basement is to the left go shop there ,be envious but dont be jealous

If only we were Everton, then we could have got a crock on a free, spent £4.5 million on a player who couldn't wait to leave a couple of seasons ago, and even worse we could have gone 17 (soon to be 18) years without winning a trophy.

Plastic. Joke. Willy.

The biggest thing that has happened to Everton in the last 17 years is Tony Hibbert scored a goal. Well done.

Come back when you've come anywhere near our trophy haul. So in around 100 years.

Tree Blue the bitter whose team never win NOWT!!

Tello and Walcott are far from unrealistic. The only reason people say we might get sahin is because he looks available on loan and BR and Mourinho obviously have some ties. The rest on that lost are very unlikely.

I was a bit dubious about Bellamy coming back ( with his questionable temperament ) I will be sorry to see him go, he played with pride, passion and bags of enthusiasm. All 'promising' young stars at Anfield could take a leaf out of his book. I wish him well.

Who disagreed?

10 Aug 2012 19:01:56
Out of the 4 strikers named by Hodgson, how many will be in a Liverpool shirt come end of the month ?

One- Sturridge!

Apparently joe allen has completed his medical and is officially lfc player, if so then I'm very happy, good luck!

Malaga are ready to sell their players. Is there any chance we could target Isco(CM) , Nacho Monreal(LB), Ignacio Camacho(DM) or Sebastian Fernandez(AM)?

Am I the only person who doesn't rate isco that highly.

No mate i agree, isco is crap

The "Agger to City" rumours won't go away and many thought his actions at the final whistle were those of a man saying goodbye, although not necessarily. The player consistently linked as a makeweight in the deal is Adam Johnson. Now granted he is an extremely talented player who is rotting on the City bench week after week. But does he tick all of Brendan's boxes, close analysis suggests not? Rodgers likes pace and trickery in the wider forward positions. Johnson has both. He also expects players to have a strong team ethic. Johnson is a brilliant individual talent who never seems to score tap-ins, but is he overly creative? I have my doubts. Finally Rodgers is a stickler for the hard working mentality, the desire to regain possession as quickly as possible when lost. For all their flair and composure on the ball this is the most impressive trait of the dominant club side of recent years, namely Barcelona. Mancini has never questioned Johnson's ability but he has publically, and on more than one occasion criticized his work rate, the main factor behind his pitiful number of starts. Maybe Rodgers feels he can improve the player in that department but I'm not sure it's something you can coach into someone, it has to come from within. I'm praying Agger lines up for the Reds for many years to come, i believe he'll play at his peak for the next 4-5 years. If City are fortunate enough to secure his services I feel we'll derive no benefit from receiving one of their cast offs in exchange. It would have to be a straight cash purchase for me and if they don't meet our valuation then don't even get to the negotiating table with them.

10 Aug 2012 18:29:21
Ok who will signed i.y.o by first Prem game? And who by end of window? Will Dempsey be one of them?

If we sign dempsey and get rid of Adam in the process I don't think anyone would argue that's a win win situation. Plus dempsy would add depth in the attacking department. The Ramirez rumours will not go away and apparently we did make the £12.5 mill bid and were set to make an improved offer. If we were to get Dempsey and Ramirez I think our business is done. Apart from of course some departures.

10 Aug 2012 18:26:58
Theres a lot of speculation that quaresma will be joining and he isn't training with the first team squad at besiktas now do you see a move happening or is there no substance to the rumours? I think at 6 or 7 million he could be a good signing

Thanks

And still it continues.....paying over the top prices for unproven players and letting proven players go on the cheap or if clubs refuse to give us anything for a player what the heck just give them the player anyway for free..Not good business..All the other clubs must be pissin themselves laughin at us..

Joe Allen is not unproven and is not average

Who are you? I can't laugh at you if I don't know who you are.
Dutchmal

Although Bellamy is a class player, he is 32 and wants to be closer to his family at this stage of his career, can you blame him?
As for Joe Allen, 90 sumit % pass completion last year in his first yr in Prem, played forr team GB and at 22 has massive potential for the future, my point bein, i dont really see what your complainin at?

The only people laughin are us lot laughin at you, seriously get a grip and get with the times, some Liverpool fans want to move forward.

Carb

Personic post by a person.
BigBadBen

Who do you suggest we buy? Joe Allen is proven, and a lot of Liverpools past stars and current weren't 'proven' before joining... Who was Steven Gerrard before he started playing? Just an unproven kid.

We got bellamy on a free and have let him go to Cardiff to finish his career on a free, what is your problem?

I disagree. Yes the Hendersons and Carrols were overpriced but they are still good players with potential, the difference is the Dalgleish was buying players on reputations and recommendations with the hope they would fit into his system. Rodgers is buying something which he knows inside out and must assume that LFC dont already have this... I will be amazed if he doesnt fit in straight away because Rodgers will know exactly how to get what out of him... it shouldnt be any gamble! ps he cant win he got slated for being tight with Siggy and paying to much for Allen!

United paid 18mil for Carrick & 20mil for hargreaves.

Give Allen a chance ffs. Hate doomsayers like you who throw your toys out of the pram if you don't get what you want.

Pipe down and give your club some support or p*ss off an buy a city/chelsea/utd shirt.

Bobd94

Not really mate. You win some and lose some. Liverpool are not in a position to make world class signings for reasonable prices anymore. Infant no clubs can anymore. Im sure there's a few more signings yet to come that would appease the fans more. (this time they won't be complaining about how much we payed for him, just that he's a good player)

I think Adam is gone, and so do Spearing. the way jonjo playing no point keep adam and spearing as allen come to fill one place in the team.

Let's hope so

10 Aug 2012 18:04:25
I think so far BR transfer is better then Kenny. over age highly paid player is gone. and player in also good price and good range of salary. don't know how Kenny pay £80k week to carroll.

Can you believe he was being paid more then suarez, that was an absolute joke! RedTurk

How can anyone disagree with that? Jenny's signings were home grown talent that costed us fortunes. Unfortunantly him and DC were the ones that set the bar for other teams to take advantage (Michael laundrup made that very clear). KK failed miserably, accept and move on

A 19 years old boy who just Half year in epl get £80k a week. may be Carroll is one of the big reason KK get rid.

Was talking to a young player on the other day and i asked him who was the better manager? he said Brendan! He also told me that LFC are after Tello!

10 Aug 2012 17:59:45
Kuyt, maxi, bellamy, aquilani.
Think of the wages saved in letting those 4 players go.
Just a guess but 15m a year can't be far off.
Would anybody want them back?
Or would you rather save the money for a rainy day?

MIKEY

No, I'd rather put that money into buying some new attacking players, the squad is looking a bit bare in the attacking department
Jonny71

I'd reinvest it in a new player or 2 or increase the wages for those who deserve it like Suarez's new contract.. keeps the players and fans happy..
Cal

FORWARDS

You can add
Suarez, Borini, Carroll, Gerrard, and Downing

Not bad at the moment

That's what I meant by save it for a rainy day. Use it when we need it.
I agree we need a striker still. 2 if carrol goes.

MIKEY

So good to see Lucas back in action! Like a new signing and pushes Stevie up where he belongs, Def have a side strong enough to compete for top four as long as we avoid that pesky woodwork. Another couple of good signings and ill be very optimistic, Roll on the new season and COME ON BRENDAN!!!
(thinking ill be changing my name soon)

If we bought a new player as good at Lucas for £30 million, everyone would be made up. Probably our best 'new signing' this summer.

10 Aug 2012 17:23:14
Went to last nights game, decent show.Do need more quality in midfield.I keep saying Shelvey will come good, starting to doubt meself.Suarez different class, wish we had more of his sublime standard. For me Agger MUST stay and KOP sent that message. If we have to sacrifice Carroll to move forwards,im not to concerned either way.Borini-not bad, good runs, maybe a rough diamond. But Agger must stay

Shelvey not good enough , did the scout who recommended him get released just because he was young playing for charlton does not make him good .

Ridiculous statement about Shelvey!

Remember Shelvey is only 20 years old, not bad for a young kid, compare him to Lucas at that age!!

Take it you paid no attention Jonjo played great

Compare Shelvey to Lucas at the same age?

By the time Lucas was 20 he had won the Brazilian 2nd Division, the Sao Paulo State Championship twice ('06 & '07), captained Brazil U20's to the 2007 South American Youth Championship and was footballer of the year in Brazil ('06).

He also made his first Senior International appearance (2007) and won Olympic Bronze with the Brazilian U23's ('08).

I do think Shelvey will be class though - a genuine star - I've been saying it for a while now.

But Lucas had achieved a hell of a lot at the same age.

Lucas has looked as good as when he left in the games I've seen him in so far - which is brilliant to see.

I was a little concerned that he may not be the same, but he has looked like a beast!

Lucas, Allen, Gerrard. Class.

Is it true we are wanting Tello but an issue with Barca wanting a buyback clause is stalling things?

Tnx

That is a rumour that seems to be going around a lot, we do want Tello and Barca do often work like that, so it's likely..
Cal

Buy him for 7m with a 12m buyback clause that is valid for first season, then 14m after the second season.

I hope BR is stalling because of this I hate all this buy-back BS the spanish clubs (especially Barca) insist on thats how they just got Jordi Alba for 14m/£11.5m

Hey all..surely with the impending Allen deal we wouldn't have room for sahin? Unless maybe 2 of our centre mids were moved?? Thoughts on this? Personally I hope the loan deal is affelay he is a great player

Henderson, adam and spearing can all leave as far as im concerned. All looked out of their depth

Yeah i too hope the loan deal is affelay, either buy him or on loan, as we are in need of wingers. and i'm guessing that if we did get sahin on loan adam and spearing would go with maybe shelvey out on loan.

10 Aug 2012 16:52:37
sign allen and a loan player and a defender 4 replacing agger

10 Aug 2012 16:52:36
predictions for this window:
INS: walcott 13 million
tello loan or 7 million
sahin loan or 12 million
allen 15 million
godin 10 million
matias suarez 13 million
borini 12 million

OUTS:cole probably nothing after paying him off
spearing 2 million
adam 5 million
agger 25 million
carrol 15 million
aqua
bellamy
maxi
kuyt 1 million

net spend if tello and sahin are permanent:34 million but wage bill cut and squad drastically improved

net spend if sahin and tello loan:15 million.

Either way that would be a really good window financially and squad improved.

Hope your right bar agger departure

Id rather keep agger, coz if amorebieta is his replacement, then we r screwed.
Indian Buzzer

We rejected 17m, why would we now accept less?

I'd rather keep Agger too but I decided to predict instead of what I want.

10 Aug 2012 20:46:43
Why on earth do people keep wanting Walcott? I know Macca said we'd enquired but my best friend is a Gooner season ticket holder and has been saying for 4 years that he is not very good! He wanted him out two years ago because his decision making and positionally play is not of the required quality.

Walcott scored 11 goals last season and 13 assists. I think that is quality and he gets some very undeserved stick. He will be very good for Liverpool

10 Aug 2012 16:48:37
How many more signings do you expect to make after Allen:
a)even if we keep Agger and Carroll
b)if we sell them

Hundreds, if not thousands, allen won't be our last signing

jiz

Good question. maybe an ed might like to answer. i see one more after allen if no one is sold plus loan(s). but im pretty sure carroll is going to leave and agger might stay. i expect at least 3 new faces. 2 signings and a loan player {Ed049's Note - 2 signings and 2 loan deals if Carroll is sold.}

Hi Eds, wondering if you can fill me in here. I'm not sure if its just me missing details or that for some reason they are not considered important enough to be released/published, but I have heard nothing of any transfer fees for any of the three senior players we have let go this summer (Kuyt,Maxi,Bellamy). I appreciate all of these three are the wrong side of thirty but they should still retain some value. They are all class players which could still cut the mustard for many premiership sides (if they were inclined to). What money did we get? My gut feeling is that your answer will disappoint me. cheers guys, great job. che47
{Ed002's Note - About £1M, none, none plus the well documented Aquilani money - effectively none.}

It's a 'New Dawn' at Anfield . I could not care less about the transfer income of those player sold/released .

Maybe Adam & Downing will be sold for a loss aswell , but as long a Buck is moving things forward I'm delighted .

hey eds,
i was just wondering that now that villareal are relagated does that mean that giuseppe rossi and nilmar could be bought for relatively cheap? both are quite good player and would be good additions to the squad? and is it true that kevin mirallas has a £6.5m buy out clause?

SeamusOwensLad957 {Ed002's Note - USe the search engine please.}

Nilmar doesn't play for Villarreal anymore, he plays in Qatar or something like that

10 Aug 2012 16:33:43
Hi ed, please post this. I try to be as accurate as possible from what i know and what i've heard.

Ins:
Allen
Dempsey
Ramirez (Possible, I think he's the one the fans want)
A Centre Back if Agger goes

I think we are likely to see a player coming in who can play in that role behind the striker, or slot into a slightly further forward midfield role.

Outs:
Adam (Possible)
Agger( Possible)
Skrtel ( Club would listen to offers)
Carroll ( Looking likely to be a loan move)
Bellamy (Gone)
Kuyt (Gone)
Maxi (Gone)

Just a little note here about loan moves. People suggesting Kaka and Sahin. Sahin is the more likely option. Just because both have been told they can leave doesn't mean they will.

The fans want messi - but that's not going to happen. Sadly it is not us that decides transfers!

Realistic red

In: borini, Allen, loan player, Ramirez/Walcott/Sturbridge and finally dempsey. (/ - means 'or' so the fourth player is out of those 3).

Out: if the loan player is a striker/winger then I expect to see Carroll leave either on loan or permanently. Adam, spearing (loan), possible shelvey or Henderson on loan. Maybe some other younger players will leave to. I expect to see cole and agger stay.

10 Aug 2012 16:30:57
we are indeed a fickle bunch. after last nights display, suddenly we are going to win the league! we still have a lot of ground to make up and it will take time. cant say i am overwhelmed by either Borini or Allen but add 2/3 more to that including an established marquee saigning/loan and i will be more optimistic. understand that we dont have that much money and we want to invest in younger players with resale value so...

...rather than looking abroad, can we not look at foreign players that are playing in prem now as they wont need time to adjust?

You have to pay over the odds for relatively mediocre British players so how about one or two of these who would add depth to the squad?

coloccini, bryan ruiz, jelavic, Dzeko, kolo toure, ssesengnon, hangeland

Did you see borini last night stop being negative or walk alone!

The club do not buy marquee players just to satisfy you!

Get a grip, yes we're far from championship winners but the current policy makes absolute perfect sense given the amount of money spent last year.

We're moving forward and anything better than 8th is a positive!

Irish Al

We are not fickle. Fickle means to casually change one's mind. What you've been reading on here in the last 20hrs are the 50% of fans that tried to remain positive. It's the other 50% that are missing today, fickle doesn't come into it.

dd

I'd like to think we could win the championship all. Lol

hi eds,
is it possible that we could sign players like johnson, walcott or ramirez without selling players like carroll or agger or MUST we sell them in order to bring these players in? is sinclair a possibility anymore? hope we can make another couple of decent signings before the transfer window ends {Ed002's Note - Search function please.}

10 Aug 2012 16:25:47
I doubt that Sahin will be headed to Arsenal on loan. If Arsenal got Sahin for the year it would allow them to sell Song to Barca. I doubt Real Madrid want to help out Barca....

10 Aug 2012 16:01:26
Hey Ed's with De Vries been linked with us quite a fair bit. I

was just wondering assuming we let Doni and Jones go on frees, Would the 750k we pay for De Vries and his wages work out less/more?

Damn football contracts and wages are just complicated...

Cheers Etch {Ed002's Note - I would not worry yourself over the money.}

Hey eds I saw the post earlier but doesn't answer my question in full.. I am.just wondering on a probable favourite or a side showing the most interest in tello? Just wondering if he would want to come to England, I know he came out and said going to atletico would be a reward for him but there is a lot of news about atletico being in some financial strife {Ed002's Note - I can't reasonably answer "favourite" for Tello. Sorry.}

10 Aug 2012 15:52:11
Why have we given Bellamy away surely worth at least 1 mill

I think out of respect for Bellamy it was right to let him go on a free. He's been a good player for Liverpool and i personally love his attitude on the pitch and his passion.

Cheers Etch

And a massive savings on wages.

He took a pay cut to come to Anfield so with the fantastic attitude he's shown i believe he deserves the correct move

10 Aug 2012 15:51:05
Bellamy, Maxi and Kuyt all leave but still we a stuck with Spearing, Cole and Carragher. Spearing is the worst player to even wear the jersey, Cole is a joke and Carragher should of retired 2 years ago, Its embarrassing seeing him struggle in games now. such a shame.

You sir. are a shame. dont need 'supporters' like you.

Im sure spearing will leave. we will probably try and move cole but it will be difficult due to his wags. ed do you have any idea of what carra is on? thanks.

With support like yours I am sure we will have a great season!
Look up the definition of loyalty in a dictionary then look in the mirror and see what a disgrace of a "fan" you are.

Derek

Sad but true, ive cringed many a time over the past 3 seasons watching carra try to keep up, very sad to see a legend try to save his career.

What about jimmy traore

Agreed, spearing and cole need to go, if im honest carragher should of retired 2-3 seasons ago, people are just laughing at him now, sad to see. he needs to retire, cost us about 50-60 points in the last 2-3 seasons.

You cant slate people who don't like Spearing or Cole, even the most biased Die hard fan knows they aren't good enough and its as simple as that. I'll support Liverpool no matter what win or lose and always have but i will criticize players who i feel aren't worthy of the shirt or don't give 100%, its not being unloyal or fickle its being realistic so give over with all this "we dont need supporters like you" cause its a banter site you clowns!

At least they have their heart in the right place unlike yours!
okay, Spearing isn't your 'la liga' maestro, but he always gives 110% and that sometimes counts for more than that extra quality for a squad player, because he would come in at any point and you are guaranteed a relentless effort by him. Same goes for Carra, his experience is pivotal for some of our youngsters. he knows as well as anyone his time is nearly up, but he is fantastic to have as back up rather than a rookie.
okay cole is a different story, and it's like it's not meant to be. he is a bit jinxed, but he wants to put that right and do well for us and that deserves some recognition.

How has he tried to save his career......He gets put on by the MANAGER so he obviously is good enough for certain roles. He knows he is winding down now,do you hear him moan or spit his dummy out no.
Do you read he is putting in a transfer request to force a move NO.
He is happy to train keep himself in shape and work when called upon so will you lot calm down.He is second/third string and probably the best second/third string CB in the prem.

And Spearing is a very reliable third string midfielder not first team....If he moved to a championship side like some say he would be first team because hes that level. But at Liverpool he is thrid string.Name me 5 better thrid string midfielders in the premiership.

Kopping a feel

I think they are saying something more along the lines of we dont WANT fans like this supporting our club. you may think your being realistic but your also whining like a little girl. spearing and carra are reds through and through and deserve our respect and support. i agree carra might have seen his best days and spearing looks out of his depth but saying they are a waste of space is a disgrace

Hey Eds,
Do yous think we will have allen in time for Hyypias bayern leverkusen and if yes, do you think he will play?
And is there any serious interest from us for walcott or adam johnson?
Thanks {Ed002's Note - Allen will sign very soon. I have no idea if he will play though.I understand from what Macca said that interest in Walcott exists.}

10 Aug 2012 15:37:21
Hey Ed's, now that Joe Allen's deal is close to completion, who is the next player that is being targeted? We've now lose Bellamy, Kuyt and Maxi, who are obviously all attackers, so hopefully a new attacking winger/striker? Or will it all depend on whoever else leaves?

Thanks.

Probably walcott and tello. I would guess we will move for sahin when adam and spearing move. I think we wont buy dempsey and instaed will buy a younger more expensive striker if carrol leaves. we probably also buy a defender if agger leaves.

10 Aug 2012 15:35:34
hi eds , just a quick one IF we get Allen where do you think that leaves Henderson ? I like the lad a i think he was starting to put in some better performances for us , thought he looked good when he come on for england too . Also do you think the club are actively looking to sell Adam or is it just a case us trying to get Dempsey and using him to sweeten the deal ? i hope he goes anywhere ! I also hope we keep big Andy C was good to hear the roar for him when he warmed up last night , hope rodgers took notice ! Also we dont seem to be linked with what i would call out and out wingers , i dont understand this as we seem to want lots of cm and no real wingers , thanks for your time ......andy.

BR has come out and publicly praised Jordan, so I think he is definitely part of his plans for the present and the future

It's a good question. I think it see like this:

Lucas -> Spearing
Allen -> Henderson
Gerrard -> Shelvey

Obviously not necessarily always like this as just as easily Henderson could understudy for Gerrard or Shelvey for Allen (as at last night's game) or if Lucas were out Allen could drop back bringing in either Henderson or Shelvey. Basically lots of possibilities as several of the players are pretty flexible which is what I think BR is looking for.

The question of wingers comes up every few days , Rodgers never has nor ever will play with wingers , please don't tell me Dyer and Sinclair are wingers .

10 Aug 2012 15:34:47
Either the official site is down or we can't post comments, just wanted to say how sad I am that Bellamy has gone. OK, he had his faults, but his passion and enthusiasm, knew no bounds and would surely rub off on some of the youngsters. I'm reminded of the old joke, all the photos of wanted men displayed in the Post Office and the little kid says " but mummy, why didn't they catch them, when they were taking their photo ?" I think of Joe Allen, why didn't we catch him yesterday, when he was at Anfield ? Apparently only to dot the I's & cross the T's

10 Aug 2012 15:23:14
I wonder if the club is shifting the players in there final few years to bring down the average age of the squad because of the four first team players that have left 3 are over 30. I wonder if rodgers feels they don't the level of fitness for those positions that someone in his team needs or is it the board telling him to bring the age down.

Well its no secret......

Just cole left and adam who looks older than my gramps.

Gerrard and Carra next then from the over 30 brigade?

Nicely written but it concerns me a tad when fans such as yourself speak about Demsey as if he's already signed and is nor of our player's. Also to speak about both players aireal ability as if it was near enough equal is wrong and misleading. Their's no doubting that Demsey is good in the air,but to be fair to Big Andy he's a phenom when it come's to heading ability, best i've seen in a longtime. I do agree that the 'Target man' role is diminishing with each passing season though pal.

Seeing yesterdays match I think we should sell Carroll as much as it pains me to say it with 17 mill we could get a class attacker such as rameriz (spelling) even though I love Carrolls desire to play he won't naturally fit into how quick we was playing yesterday. I think he needs to be sold although I'm sad it didn't work out

Larki

Did you not also notice the vast amount of times we worked the ball out to the wings and put crosses in ... Exactly where Carroll would fit in!

I forgot how many goals did we get from crosses? Also most of them were from downing in which carroll would most prov replace if you want him to stay in

Larki

At the moment, Carroll doesn't have the pace or stamina to get on the end of those crosses, though. Might work if he just loitered about the box, but think he would have a tough time playing a pressing defensive game and then chugging it up the pitch to get on the end of a cross (was pretty much one of his main issues last year, really) whereas Suarez/Borini/Gerrard have no such problem.

At the end of the day, I just don't see Carroll as being mobile/flexible enough to play in this sort of system without a ton of hard work on his part to become more like a Llorente/Ibrahimovich. It is possible he could do so, but think it's pretty unlikely. Completely willing to proven wrong though as I'd love to see us get £35M worth of goals out of the lad.

Why on earth would we replace Carroll with downing...? Suarez will be pushed out wide and borini will move into the center and be replace by carroll. It makes zero sense on what your saying Larki

Ok after the Allen deal the focus will be on a centre back(Godin), forward/mid(Johnson, walcott and/or Dempsey) expect 2 out of them 3 if all below are moved on and goalkeeper (de vries). Approximately £60 for all including Allen in transfer fees.

Possible outs are skrtel (not agger), Adam, Carroll, Bellamy and spearing. Approximately £50m in.

All up expense of £10-£15m, fantasy football as nothing confirmed (good back to old lfc ways which is why im happy to wait for the right players) but I'd think thats an improved squad.

Possible loan signings also which I have no info on but if from Spain wouldn't mind seeing tello and if Rogers does have a good relationship with Jose I'd love us to move for ozil either permanently or with option to buy because if modric does end up at real ozil will be a squad player.

Good performance last night, Gerrard, Suarez and Borini looked they were having a great old time playing together but poor Stewie Downing looked like he did'nt no how to play.
Is Liverpool a step too big for Stewie, me thinks so.

Actually i thought downing played quite well. hope this season is a new start for him and he shows us what he really is capable of.

What match were you watching? He was on the ball more than Borini was.

I'm beginning to think that people just assume Downing was rubbish because they've made the determination that he's not good enough, and he'd have to do something outlandish like dribble past 6 players and curl one into the top corner for them to even contemplate otherwise.

- Something Red -

Dont count the losses on Downing yet! what about his great goal in the first leg?

Liverpool Football Club can today confirm that Craig Bellamy has completed a transfer to Championship side Cardiff City.

The Welsh forward first joined Liverpool in 2006 but departed for West Ham a year later.

He returned to Anfield for a second stint in 2011 and in January 2012 netted the goal that took the Reds back to Wembley for the first time in 16 years.

In total Bellamy scored 18 goals in 79 games for Liverpool.

Everyone at the club would like to wish him all the best for the future.

GOOD LUCK BELLERS... YNWA

To posters, if you had to put money on Liverpool's signings and squad for the new season, what would it be?
Here's my personal bet:

In:

Borini(£11m), Allen(£15m), De Vries(£750k), Afellay/Tello(Loan/£7m), Walcott(£15m), Dempsey(£4m+Adam)

1st team squad next season

GK: Reina, De Vries, Gulacsi
LB. Enrique, Robinson
CB: AGGER, Skrtel, Carragher, Coates
RB: Johnson, Kelly
MF: Gerrard, Lucas, Allen, Afellay, Henderson, Downing, Spearing, Cole
FW: Suarez, Borini, Walcott, Dempsey

I think Carroll will eventually leave, along with Adam,
and Walcott and Dempsey will be late signings. But I still think Agger will stay, his case is different to Carrolls, as he DOES fit into Brendan Rodgers philosophy. Shelvey, Sterling and Flanagan could be loaned out too.

Agree/disagree?

Cheers, Irishdom15

I would rather see Tello there than affeley. I would also like to see Spearing moved on, but in the main i would be pretty happy with that squad.

The Irish Rover

Think this is all pretty possible, Irishdom15, although not sure about getting both Walcott and Dempsey as I think it would be more of an either or scenario.

Doesn't seem like a bad team to me at all though and I would personally be pretty happy with it.

I can't understand why a lot of people think we should pay a fee plus Charlie Adam for Dempsey .

Adam is 26 and near the start of his contract .

Dempsey is 30 next birthday and near the end of his contract .

If a fee is to be included it should be paid by Fulham to Liverpool !

The difference being, we really want Dempsey, they will take Adam - and we kind of want to get rid of him to. It's all part of the dance as Brendan would say.

Welsh Steve

It isn't just about their age though is it? I don't see your point. Dempsey is a brilliant attacker with one of the best goal ratios to his name last season, whereas Adam has done pretty much nothing and was injured for a chunk of last season. Simple.

JP.

Simple. Dempsey is quite a bit better than Charlie.

This is because dempsey is a much better player than adam and is worth more

By this logic, Barca should send Xavi + Cash for Spearing.

All your using is age? Really if you say that then we should be able to swap Adam for RVP considering Dempsey was their top player last season

Hi eds,

Do you really think the owners would sell the naming rights for anfield? Would hate to see that happen, but on the filp side it could generate extra revenue.

Thanks

Red raj {Ed002's Note - This will I am sure be a discussion point. It could generate significant additional revenue as you say. Personally I think it will happen.}

I don't see anything wrong with say 'Air China Stadium at Anfield' as an example. If the idea is to turn the area around Anfield into a 'destibation' then call the stadium itself whatever you want and the general area 'Anfield'.

I agree with the Ed. I think the owners care about tradition but i think they care about the almighty $ more. If having naming rights to Anfield generates plenty dosh, then it will happen. If we want to stay with the pack, we MUST do it.
Big-murdo

How much do you think it could give us per annum?

Tom

At the end of the day we need the extra revenue and whatever the stadium is called we will still know it as and will always call it anfield ... steve

"I don't see anything wrong with say 'Air China Stadium at Anfield' as an example. If the idea is to turn the area around Anfield into a 'destibation' then call the stadium itself whatever you want and the general area 'Anfield'." The area around Anfield is called Anfield already. John w henry can sell even his kids for money. I will be really dissapointed if he sells anfield naming rights. Why shouldn't he think for new ground if he wants to sell naming rights {Ed002's Note - The cost.}

John Henry would sell his first Born never mind the naming rights to Anfield

Sorry, am not from Liverpool so didn't know this (bad LFC fan, I know, but the nuances of this sort of thing are hard to determine from 5000 miles away).

In that case, issue seems sorted then. Would XYZ Park/Stadium/whatever at Anfield really be that bad? Again, not from Liverpool or anywhere close to it so no disrespect intended and am curious of the locals opinions.

Whatever the owner decides to do, for me ANFIELD will always be ANFIELD..

coming to asking some opinions from you guys, with Allen almost being signed, our transfer tally for the season will become £26mil. and we got almost nothing from the sales of Aquillani, Bellamy, Kuyt and maxi except for the wage cuts. but the new players coming will have to be payed too. so anyways my question is; are we likely to sign walcott with out having to sell Carroll ? even if the new winger is not Caroll, can we afford to spend 10 - £15 mil from here on if both Caroll and Agger stay put ?

We have money to the the right players when deemed necessary.

Hello Eds, I over heard a rumour from a few men in suits in town today (not saying they work with Liverpool but it is more reliable then some kid or a chav) that we are interested in bringing two more Uraguians, I speculate that it could be Ramirez and Godin. Maybe someone I'm not aware of.

YMWA p

You're sure they hadn't just left court?

Yes, The men you noticed are sports scientist's that have been employed by FSG to clone Suarez (twice).

The first sports science team was let go after their first clone of Suarez turned out to have bad manners.

FSG are spending the majority of the budget this year on this project which is why there has not been much transfer activity or any news about a new stadium.

However, the Chinese are interested in this new technology and are expected to heavily invest should a good working prototype be produced.

How every one was so sure as he didnt even kick the ball i mean if he played he could hv score 2 or more goals, u never kno mayb he could hv turn up for this match as everyone including even downing In those type of matches if everyone was so good, suarez form, gerard/enrique/ectect advance position mayb he could hv buried one or 2 goals who knows? From the last AC matches he is not a lazy player, just give him a clean slate as evryone.

Kaizer {Ed029's Note - Impossible to say for definite but if I had to guess I would say that we would only go for Amorebieta if Agger or Skrtel leave. Wilson barely plays so we don't need to replace him with a first team regular such as Amorebieta}

Nobody can question Carroll's commitment and desire to succeed at Liverpool but modern football has seen the gradual phasing out of the big target man. Very few top club/international sides deploy them anymore. There are exceptions ofcourse, Gomez of Germany and even Damiou of Brazil but both of these have greater mobility than big Andy and have grown up developing their games in countries where pace, skill and mobility in the forward line are paramount. Drogba was a great physical presence for Chelsea but his game had many more facets to it than just "target man." Liverpool have taken a bold step in altering their whole football philosephy under Rodgers butwe have spent too many years trying to fit square pegs into round holes,ie kuyt and Henderson as right sided players which they clearly are not. Carroll will slow down the fluidity and movement Rodgers craves. He also changes the mind sets of players in possession, offering the lazy launched ball forward hoping to feed off scraps and the second ball. Fans point to his impact in the cup final and subsequent league match against Chelsea. The first was gung - ho football when there was nothing to lose and the second came against a side who wished to be anywhere other than Anfield that night, they had a far bigger match looming. I love Andy's attitude and sheer desire to succeed but if we are to progress with the style implemented by Rodgers then sadly he has no role to play. I know this will divide opinion but it is just my stance on the matter. For the record I would wish Andy all the best for the future should it lie away from our hallowed turf,(great to see red nets again last night.) Fingers crossed, transition is never smoothbut as one we need to move in the same direction, and as I see it that has to be climbing back to the summit of English football.

Paul, Staffs.

I do think it's a bit harsh to judge Andy in a role and style that we have never even seen him try yet. However I do agree with you about the mindset of other players when he is on the pitch, and it was the same with Crouch, other players tend to hit the ball early and long.
There was an interview given by Ian Holloway weeks ago where he that stated BR rated Andy, but had serious reservations about the other players adopting and sticking to the style he wanted with Andy on the pitch, the temptation to go long.
To a certain degree he maybe a victim of his own size, rather than his ability on the ball.
RNred

He isn't a technically good forward that BR wants. if we sell carroll and buy walcott with the money then i will be happy. carroll can be a great striker at times- but only when we play to his stregnths (which contradict BR's methods). Carroll would've been perfect during the benitez regime. Now however i rate borini higher than carroll- his movement is much more clever and he has a better touch and is a better finisher. i still like carroll and hope he succeeds elsewhere but i don't think he will be a 20+ goals a season striker that we need to secure champions league football. now to be fair neither is walcott but his stregnths compliment BR's system much more than carrolls.

15m is too much for Joe Allen. He's a okay player but not really an improvement on Henderson, Lucas, Adam, Spearing etc. Most of his passed last season were in his own half or passes to his defence. Yet again we are gonna over pay for an average player. I thought we would of learned our lesson after Kenny wasted 35m on carroll adam 7m coates 7m henderson 20m and downing 18m. But now Rodgers has come in and spent 11m on Borini and 15m for Allen. {Ed029's Note - I think Borini was actually £10m and he looked the part. Allen hasn't even signed yet so why don't we give him a chance? People were writing off BR before the game last night and look how well we played. Allen could be just what we need IMO}

I can't wait to see Allen play for us, he is a young talented player, who has the potential to be great

Oh here we go another nob head slating players before thu even joined. This same guy will be saying how amazing Allen is when he sees how much of an excellent signing he will be

Well said ed , i thought we had lost the doom and gloom after last nights performance but obviously not , allan is a great player and will get better , he is already better than adam , henderson who i think will also be a great player and shelvey who will be very good but 1 season to soon for him imo his tackling needs to improve then he will be fine and shelvey can gain that experience in cup games and any other games he plays , allan can also play anywhere in midfield from what ive seen so good cover to move around during any injury crisis and as for borini i take it you havent watched him yet he took his goal well last night his movement is superb hes quick and gets back to help the other players a bargain me thinks ... steve

7 mil for the Copa America Youth Player of the Tournament is a waste?!

Here, I thought youth players are getting sold for around 22 mil.
Even Phil I-Dont-Know-My-Best-Position Jones cost double of Coates.

As for your whining about Allen , I am not going to waste too much of time. You haven't clearly seen him play much and also do not watch Liverpool's game frequently. Allen was the main reason that we failed to dominate our games against Swansea. Swansea were the only team who felt that they should have won after drawing at Anfield.

To the original poster...

did you know that last season Allen completed 2000 more passes than our highest player? as well as making more successful tackles than our highest player?

I am delighted after last nights performance. I know it was only against a small side, but they're a long way into their season so our fitness had to be good, which it certainly was.

What also pleased me is that despite his short time at the club/with the players BR's footballing style is already very present. Now sometimes it's easy to instil this kind of pressing, possession football to certain players but not to your whole 11. Everyone played with a focus on their task, most notably Shelvey. Jonjo in the games I've seen normally plays a little unchained, which is fine to an extent but last night he played intelligently, knowing when to protect and when to push. Gerrard took about 10 years to learn to play that way, so I was impressed with him.

Suarez is a world class player and once his finishing improves, will be up there with the top 5 strikers in the world.
What also delighted me was his link up play with Borini. The lad has got real talent, with such clever movement. He also seems very composed in front of goal and him, Luis and Dempsey (who I feel will join), competing all season to be top LFC goal scorer.

I've been extremely fond of Lucas for about 3 years. Under our woeful Roy era, he was the only player to lift his game and become the best DM in the EPL. Others struggled with the bizarre tactics but Lucas as ever, was diligent meticulous and continued to prove his doubters wrong. He's such a strong committed player. He's got incredibly stamina, which is remarkable after such a horrid injury. He seems to be tackling as if he's never been away, which shows he's not been rushed back and also that he trusts his body which is great news. Last season he's the only player I've seen dominate Yaya Toure for strength and mark the wonderful David Silva out of a game. He's world class for me and a massive reason why we started to struggle after Chridtmas.

Gerrard looks like a new man, he honestly does. I think the Euro's and being England's key player has given him a big lift. He'll be playing in his preferred role and seems to be linking very well with Suarez again. Hopefully Allen can be that link man we need. I rate Lucas's passing, but Allen will be more incisive. Everyone remembers Alonso's long range passing, but where he also excelled was threading quick balls to Gerrard who fed Torres. That system worked well for us and almost got us the title that year. If Rodgers utilises his 4-3-3 system successfully then we'll certainly create clear cut chances, then as last season it's about the finishing.

After last night I can see how Carroll is likely to leave. I do rate the lad and he has a lot to offer a certain team, but that's probably not us. Yes a plan B may be required, but if Dempsey comes he's as good in the air as almost anyone and can play a fairly direct approach if required. We still need another attaching option if Carroll leaves, perhaps Tello will come?

Despite what happens I'll remain patient and positive where I can and hope BR achieves top 4 playing his football.

Papa G

Very well written too.

This is not a rumour, more a hunch. Everyone seems to be guessing we'll try to get AJ as part of any Dagger deal to Citeh. I have a feeling BR could pull a surprise and want Guidetti instead, young, good potential with good potential re-sale opportunity. E.g. 18 mill plus the player, use approx 10mil to buy Godin or Amoribietta, AC to go, again for approx 18 mil with remaining funds to be used to get Walcott plus this 'Star' player on loan. Adam and Spearing to go with a loan CM, possibly Sahin, brought in.

Just a theory.........any thoughts?

Hi all! Thanks for the great work Eds and all the others contributing, making this site so interesting.

I am optimistic ahead of the new season as Rodgers' philosophy is as close to my preference as it could be.

I think that we don't actually need many more reinforcements after Allen has signed and think the first team is almost set as well as backup for most positions. Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Lucas, Allen, Gerrard, New tricky, pacey right winger, Suarez and Borini sounds like a promising team to me.

Perhaps a player like Butland can come in to play Capital One cup matches and most F.A. cup matches, putting some much needed pressure on Reina.

As for a new winger, maybe Quaresma could come in and surprise us all, allthough I doubt it. Dimitri Payet would be interesting. Walcott or Johnson would strengthen the team, but in the course of a entire season, are they really better than Downing if he settles in and plays at his best?

Last year at this point I was wondering why Kenny hadn't brought in a promising backup for Lucas, as Spearing just never will cut it. And we all know how that went. I hope the same mistake isn't made again. Maybe Sahin is considered as a supplement in this regard?

So as far as backup and rotation options goes it could be: Butland or another hot prospect, Kelly, Carragher, Coates, Robinson, a new DM, Henderson, Shelvey, Sterling, Downing, Carroll.

I really would like to keep Carroll as he could be a good plan B option against the likes of Stoke etcetera.

What do you think?

PS. Sorry for the long post ;)

- pronin.

It was clear from yesterday that the missing piece of the jigsaw is Kevin Mirallas - an attacking wide player, comfortable on the ball with great dribbling skills and a football brain who also knows where the net and link cleverly with other players

Leam Red

You have just described Gaston Ramirez , though he would be a bit more expensive .

Have you really seen Mirallas play? He doesn't have a football brain at all and can't really pass. Think of him as the Belgian Walcott, except this guy dives like crazy.

Harry Hill

Tello is very good.only seen a bit of cuenca and didnt impress me

I think Barca see Cuenca as the player with more potential. That said I'm sure either or both will only leave the club under the same guidelines as Bojan previously, where the is a contract enabling Barca to buy back the player at a pre-agreed amount following the period of the agreement. This suits all parties, it gives frindge barca players first team football elsewhere without fully burdening that club financially.

Paul, Staffs.

Cuenca is more of an out + out winger, Kaizer mate. Tello is better suited to play in a front 3. IMO mate Tello is the better player but Cuenca ain't bad either.

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

Ah thanks Blair mate. just seen some clips from youtube (youtube, i know) and i do seem to like tello better. seems to like to beat defenders.

Seen a few posts saying keep Carrol, if we had bought him for £20M and could sell him now for £17-20 would we be in a twist about it? Strikes me it's our wounded pride talking rather than him being an important member of the team. Even his supporters are only now talking of him as an above average plan B. Time to cut our losses and reinvest, he hasn't worked out and it won't get much better no matter how much we would like it too! So let's take a bit of grief from the Mancs and the Blue noses and move on, I think that's the bit that's making some fans want to keep him any way!

I just can't wait when Carroll once again fails to perform consistently and is regarded as a flop once again. Fans will say 'told you we should of cashed in on him' and in my opinion we should especially for £17-20mill.

I tried to post yesterday but you never took it.
This was before the news today that confirmed my post yesterday in relation to Mancini being mega P***ed off with Marwood.
Igot this information from somebody on the City coaching staff days ago.
Mancini has identified Agger as his number one target for this season and is frustrated that Marwood is dallying around.
Itis right that BR wants Johnson as part of the deal but J

thank's br for making liverpool play exciting football again bring on the new season

Easy mate long way to go yet .

Kenny played the best football we played in 20 years admittedly it was in patches but that was down to lack of quality in the squad

10 Aug 2012 12:45:09
So here's pretty much what to expect for the rest of the transfer window:

Allen will sign today/tomorrow, but Bellamy will depart.
We'll soon complete the signing of De Vries, spelling the end of Doni's time at Anfield (plus possibly Jones) and we'll see movement on a loan deal next week, probably Afellay, but possibly Tello or Sahin. Towards the end of the window we'll come back in for Dempsey because Fulham's hand will be forced seing as they could lose him on a free next year, possibly Adam included in the deal. A few players will leave on loan such as Sterling, Flanagan and possibly Shelvey. Pacheco and Wilson will also depart. And that will conclude our business, unless:

Carroll leaves, in which case we would push ahead and sign Walcott.

Agger leaves, in which case we would sign Amorebieta, and possibly Adam Johnson in part exchange.

Cheers, Irishdom15

have to say in regards to the match last night the lads looked happier than i have seen them look in ages especially stevie g that formation was directly utilising most of there individual strenghts in one go was great johnson got to attack gerrard was free to roam suarez was just everywhere one negative charlie adam needs to be playing for a stoke or something he wont fit in imo..redness

10 Aug 2012 12:27:38
firstly lfc are not going to get adam johnson. unless agger ends up going the other way. witch is not going to happen because he dont want go. as for carroll who knows what going to happen there. he has said he wants to stay and fight for a place. i for one would give him a chance. with all the talk of who is leaving what you need to understand is that br is trying to build a strong squad for the season so dont expect to many more to go

Please concentrate more on your English lessons in the new term.

Hope we don't get drawn to play against the team Eto'o plays for. Would like it to be Motherwell so less traveling for the players and fans. Probably posted after the draw at 12:30 Redevon

We could beat them, and knock a decent team out earlier on, meaning it's easier to win, and providing an entertaining game!

Lucas made a big difference last night. I wonder what have happened if he had not been injured all that time?
I don't see a problem with Andy fitting in.

August 18th will be more of a challenge. And late September when the silly season has finished.

10 Aug 2012 11:56:20
I can't help think that a front 3 of Suarez, Borini and Walcott all up there in like a free role where either of them can pop up on the right, the left or down the middle and with the energy, pace, movement and ability they all have, harrassing defenders, running off shoulders, moving left to right I think they'd be a nightmare for any defence and if you maybe throw in Dempsey and Tello into the mix as a squad with Sterling, Pacheco and others in there aswell I think we'd be very hard to deal with. I think Newcastle could come back with a bigger bid for Carroll but if they don't he'd be in there too. I think Morgans impressed Rodgers aswell.
I'm also very happy with the Joe Allen signing. I think Allen and Lucas, covered by Henderson and Spearing (or someone else if he goes) in the middle could compete with anyone with Gerrard, covered by Shelvey and Suso, ahead of them in the middle three. Maybe Sahin might be thrown in there aswell? Excellent midfield.

dannyMAC

I've always thought walcott a bit inconsistent on the wings but do feel if he came to us and played through the middle as the poacher it would work great performance last night y.n.w.a paisley's genius

Thought the game yesterday proves we will be real top 4 contenders. Dont reply saying "they were wigan, wolves, blackburn level"... If i remember correctly, it was our failure to kill those sort of teams off at Anfield that cost us a top 4 spot! We look set to be far more consistent and Rodgers style will definitely help us pick apart 'lesser' opposition.

YNWA! (Adam)

Lol i think wigan, wolves and blackburn would be offended by that!

10 Aug 2012 11:48:49
Hey eds/readers Now that it seems very very likely that Bellamy is off to Cardiff (all the best to him) do you think we will be actively looking to replace him? or would some of the supposed targets like dempsey, tello or possibly afellay become more of a priority providing we actually have intrest in them. Or do you think it is more likely that one of the youngsters will take his place? Nice to see people are not moaning today and thanks in advanced eds you do an awsome job

Cheers

10 Aug 2012 11:47:46
Fulhams interest in Adam is concerete and they are asking for him to be part of any deal for Clint Dempsey, Should Liverpool opt out of a deal for Dempsey(which is looking likely as they want a large fee aswell as Adam) then they will press with further interest to buy the player outright or maybe a loan deal should Liverpool accept this is another case. He is a target for Fulham either way and other clubs may be sniffing around....

YNWA

Alves

If this is true, I hope Liverpool put a £10m price tag on Adam. He has to be worth that if they value Dempsey at over £10m. Dempsey is older and has less than 12 months on his contract.

Who's better Henderson or Allen?

I feel they are different players but on recent form it would have to be Allen..
Cal

Better is subjective as as Cal said they're different sorts of players.

Henderson is better at defending set pieces than Allen

Allen is better at holding the ball then Henderson

Allen is better at one/two-touch short passing than Henderson

Henderson is better at shots outside the box than Allen (close one though)

At the end of the day, they're both pretty darn good though.

hey ed002,

...am I wrong in thinking that theres been a rumour removed from the site... Torres on loan for a season in exchange for martin kelly on loan plus buy option? personally i thought it quite possible...

thanks for ur dedication.

Dwood

Why would Chelsea want to loan Martin Kelly, from a rival, and loan their star striker and 50m man to a rival?
Doesn't seem likely.
Cal

Your not wrong, i seen the torres rumour on here earlier dont recall Kelly being mentioned tho, come on Eds dont tell us your involved in a conspiracy.

Not just you, said chav's pay50% wages replied if true I will pay the other 50% (safe bet!). Maybe should have kept quite?. Ooooooooops.

1) why would they remove a rumour from this site? Hell, I just saw a Mikey Owen to LFC rumour on here. They allow mad people to post. :-)

2) Torres is not coming back to LFC. Chelsea won't sell/loan him to a direct rival.

3) he wouldn't fit in here now anyway. I think he has successfully proven at Chavski that he doesn't play well with others in the forward line. We play 3 up front.

only watched the highlights of last nights game (the one which is 10 minutes long on youtube). I don't see how Carroll would fit in. Whoever it is has to be mobile. After all, Spain used Fabregas as a "striker" in many of their Euro games. Let's hope Newcastle up their offer.

redkenyan

Try thinking about teams defending with 8 players to try and nick a point. It is very difficult to pass your way through that sort of defence. We need a strong physical presence in those type of games - lay off AC.

Just heard an interesting rumour, Chelsea are looking to get rid of Torres and sign Cavani as his replacement. Supposedly holding promising talks with Napoli at the moment. How he must loathe the decision to leave Liverpool now lol. Think I should also say I don't think he will be coming back to us so everyone don't get excited.

You will see more on this in the next week.

On another note, I was very impressed with the way Liverpool played last night first tome I have enjoyed a game in a long time.

loan signing to be adam johnson.. season long loan with an option to buy... with asking price more around 12 million..... but liverpool rate him more closer to 7-8 million... will be gutted to see agger leave but if we can get 25 million for a player who has been known to injuries for the last few years i think its a good bit of buisness. season review liverpool to finish 5th in my opinion...

Liverpool will qualify for the champions league hopefully

In no way does Adam Johnson fit the description of a major star...

10 Aug 2012 11:16:17
So.. here's the review so far:
2 competitive games off with a flyer (1-nil & 2-nil)
Allen is as good as settled!
Dempsey, waiting in the midst with the London club not really interested with CHAD.
And we've got above average options in the market:
Striker:
F. Llorente (bilbao)- best mate of Reina's - very possible!
Guidetti (m.city)

Mid:
N. Sahin (r.madrid), Isco (malaga), Affelay (barca)[loan], C.Tello (barca), A.Johnson (m.city), Quaresma (porto, i think)

Def:
Williams (swansea), Godin, Santon (newcastle), A. Cissokho (lyon, i think)

GK:
Vries

*i'd definitely take Llorente, Sahin (on loan), Isco (next Iniesta), A.Johnson (permanent if he takes a paycut) and A.Cissokho (compete with Enrique). Any chance it could happen, Eds? {Ed002's Note - No.}

I think you'll find it was 3-0 last night mate

Herd that Liverpool request £25million up front for Daniel Agger plus Adam Johnson on a season loan (no loan fee) and that City pay 100% of his wages while he is on loan with us. So far the terms have not been accepted by City.

Cheers, James.

Sounds reasonable price to me. Nothing less though

Not Liverpool related but can anyone else understand why Italian clubs havn't been kicked out of european games with all their match fixing scandals. It keeps happening and surely it is about time they were all kicked out. What is the point of Financial Fair Play rules when the Italians fix matches repeatedly and yet their FA are not punished.
McB

Financial fair play is a joke.

Because they are an influential world power in football and FIFA are corrupt...quite simple really

10 Aug 2012 11:10:00
Hello Eds,
So Allen looks like it could be done today. Who do you reckon could be next ? Dempsey, Tello, Affelay ?
Also on the Dempsey deal can you please clarify if we are looking to use Adam as part of the deal or are Fulham interested in taking Adam as part of any deal ? {Ed019's Note - We are offering Adam}

Why don't we offer both Adam and Spearing for Dempsey?

I always think it must be so degrading to be offered in part-ex for another player!

Just a couple of observations from last night compared to last season as we begin to see BR's system show in the play.
1. Lots more players moving towards the ball - the last 2 seasons have seen players run away from the ball looking to receive a long pass. Last night our players made themselves available for short passes outnumbering Gomel in the area of the pitch the ball was in.
2. Don't worry about teams 'parking the bus'. They will still have to track runners etc. The possession based system is about moving the defence around, making them take quick decisions to hold position or choose which runner to mark as we aim to get more numbers around the ball. Errors and tiredness will make it very difficult for lower quality players to defend well enough for 90mins. Higher quality teams will look to attack and leave space behind.
3. Not at all worried about hitting the woodwork as many times this season - you don't hit the post much when you create chances like Gerrard's goal last night. BR's plan is to create chances with very high probability of success or recycle the ball and try again - not taking hopeful pot shots from impossible positions.

I know the opposition wasn't the best and it will take time to produce good performances against good sides but you've got to admit Gomel won't queue up for another 90mins at Anfield in a hurry.

Simon

Great post Simon... nice to read an observation about football itself once in a while - Thanks.

dd

Good post, but let's not get carried away after one game. The movement was poor in the first leg, so the second leg shows improvement but is not proof of anything - at this stage it is just improvement. Teams that 'park the bus' are difficult for anyone to break down. I think the key is getting our full-backs high enough and getting deeper players involved in attacks rather than leaving it to the front four, as we did under Rafa a lot. And finally, I wouldn't say that the reason we hit the post last season was that we were taking pot-shots from range, we missed a number of clear-cut chances. So, a promising game, in which we played very well, but so far we're just going in the right direction, we're not there yet

Red Ollie

Well said and dd...looked a totally happier team last night everyone wanting the the ball and moving into positions to get it..Saurez n SG looked great and Lucas was class again..God did we miss him and a think SG did too

I was so impressed with Rodgers interview after the game, what a refreshing change to have a manager who can actually deal with the press in a positive and professional manner instead of being evasive, playing games and being generally sarcastic to the point of being embarrassing.
very happy at the moment and long may it continue, we must remember we still need to be patient and Rodgers needs time.
i'm just glad we got him instead of the mancs when old whiskey nose retires or it would be another 20 years of manc domination.

I'm as delighted as anyone that we won.
I'm as fed up as as anyone with the doom-and-gloom merchants.

But can we have a little perspective from some of you this morning. Good result in one match (tie) doesn't make a season, regardless of the opposition.

Wait until Christmas, or better still, mid-May before beatifying Brendan and his apostles- I certainly hope the mood is still as high then.

Mrpjd

You sound like your one of the doom merchants yourself.

Nope just realistic- you can't get carried away one or another at this stage.

I know what I WANT to happen. Like I said, we'll see.

...a real chance of pushing much closer for a top four....How much closer would you think? We have to TAKE a top 4 finish. We are Liverpool...18 & 5...not Fulham!

10 Aug 2012 10:44:55
Not happy with Allen addition. I
would have liked to see Ramirez
for that sort of money, as he got
flair and creativity and goals in his
game and a year younger, but i
am not BR. Allen should have cost 6-8 million if Arsenal or Man U
went for him, but they would
never go for a player of his
quality, as he is not a top 4 player.
Apart from passing there is not
much to look forward on Allen.

Goes to show what a fool you are and why you dont manage the club.

Slowpoke

Except the fact that he understands the way the Manager wants to play! It's all about the right shaped pegs for the right holes, he may be expensive but that's the market it doesn't make sense to sign a "big name" and hope he fits in.

I disagree, first off, Man U and Arsenal would have both payed the same amount as us due to a clause in Allen's contract. Secondly, bearing in mind he is only 22 and is one of the best passers in the league then I think we have got ourselves a great deal. I for one can't wait for him to arrive.

CumbrianScouse

Allen would walk into Man Utds midfield. No doubt about that.

Apart from his passing, there is not much to look forward to in Xavi's game. Well thought out comment there my friend [FR]

Jesus wept - at least let the lad sign and have at least ONE game before you critiscise him! I hope he comes in and does a crackin job, which I think he will, I think him and Lucas in the middle is gonna be a boss midfield with say Gerrard or Shelvey ahead of them in a 'free' role.
I hope he does well and doom mongers like you will have to eat their words!

Shut up you person. The guy is defensively sound, has amazing pace, finds space in defenders well and can shoot. Not only that but he's a solid link up between defence and attack - he was the glue holding Swansea's midfield together. If you love Ramirez that much then go and buy a Bologna shirt. I personally think Allen will be a great addition - in fact, I think he'll be a game changer.

JP.

Joe Allen is a quality player and has been monitored by teams in the top 4 at the moment we are not one of these teams. Allen will be integral to our midfield and will once again put us back in the top 4. Fabio Borini may not be a superstar at the moment but both he and Allen will both be worth a hell of a lot more money than we pay for them within the next 5 years. Allen will give Lucas more freedom on the ball to use his skills to break defences with his Brazilian flair.
Joe Allen is a brilliant player in short and is a welcome addition to our squad.
Scouse_Pride

Clueless post

Passing, movement, availability, creativity, tackling, work rate, vision, fairly strong, I think there's a fair few things..

Give Allen time & to the above poster who said there is not much to xavi's game other than passing I suggest you give football a miss friend if you cannot appreciate the talent, football intellect, sublime first touch & movement of one of the greatest midfielders of this and any other generation you really are watching the wrong sport..........paisley's genius

Allen medical and signing to be announced very shortly along with the announcement of Bellamy departing the club in a move to Cardiff...

A matter of hours away.

10 Aug 2012 10:38:04
Other players coming in are Allen (obviously) and then a winger, either Adam Johnson or Tello. The only players to be leaving are Adam, Bellamy and Shelvey (loan).

Red Viking

I think Shelvey will stay.

I think it will be between Henderson and Shelvey who will go on loan?
Skurks

10 Aug 2012 10:31:53
I think we need to either ship shelvey or Henderson out on a short-loan now Allen is in, could stunt their development if they are sitting on the bench the whole time.
Are there any wingers or strikers we are looking to buy at the moment eds? Clearly were not going to get a David Villa like some on here suggest, but i reckon we really need someone like Affelay or Ramirez, who can score some goals from the wings.
Assuming Agger stays, we have a top 4 quality defence and midfield, it is just the attacking area that remains in doubt.
Considering we are likely to go into the next campaign without Bellamy, Maxi and Kuyt who were all top 5/6 premier league goals scorers for us, it is crucial we add at least one more attacker.

We're playing with three in the middle and it's about having a squad, esspecially this season. I think if we end up with Gerrard, Lucas, Allen, Henderson, Shelvey, Suso and Spearing all available I think that would keep us in a strong position to get us through the 4 competitions that we're in this season.
Aquilanis gone and I think Adam will go before next week.

Why ship Shelvey or Hendo out? We need 3 CM most games and 3 back up or for cup ties - Gerrard, Allen, Lucas, Shelvey, Hendo, Spearing/Adam. Plus Hendo and Gerrard can play on the right if need be. I think it's more a case of losing either Spearing or (more likely) Adam.

cozinoz

Whilst Affellay and Ramirez can score goals from the wings, I'd rather see Walcott, A.Johnson or Dempsey on our right as I'd have more faith in them to provide regular firepower. If we sell Joe Cole as well as Bellamy we should be able to bring in one of Walcott/Dempsey/Johnson and one of Ramirez/Affellay

Hi Eds and everyone else. Question and my opinion! After watching last nights gam, watching the movement of the team makes me think that big Andy Carroll will not fit into that style of play! What does everyone else think?
LeeWils

Put him in the side and give him a try for a few games then lets see IMO.
KernowRed

That was exactly what I thought watching the game last night. I have defended Carroll since he was signed by the club and I honestly believe he will score lots of goals in a team that plays to his strengths.

But watching the interplay between the front three last, fast one-touch passes, fantastic movement with each player swapping positions, I just cannot see Carroll being able to play that way, which is a shame.

I also don't think we should keep Carroll as a 'plan B'. If your 'plan A' isn't good enough then that's a problem that needs fixing. United, City and Arsenal don't throw on a big-man when their losing.

What do Stoke use as a 'plan B'? Pass the ball on the floor trying to pull defences out of position?

JRG

That's what I think. Andy is not a bad player and if he goes he will score goals. But I just can't see how he fits in here.

Could of done with him for some of those crosses but tbh that was about it

I agree with JRG except that what happens if Borini/Suarez get injuries or the cup games mount up? We need to have at least 2 strikers in reserve - Walcott, maybe? And unless a huge offer comes in we might need Andy Carroll. He's got a good touch for a big man even though I agree he wouldn't have fitted into last night's team

cozinoz

Good point cozinoz. Perhaps as you say Wlacott if we sign him, and Dempsey too? Perhaps Rodgers sees Morgan or Sterling being able to step-up into one of the forward roles?

Either way, I don't feel having a £35m player on the bench is particularly fair on him. He is a big guy and needs to play regularly to keep his fitness up.

Maybe it's best for everyone if he moves on...shame though.

JRG

Sometimes using 'Plan B' would not be because 'Plan A' has failed it would be because the other team have geared themselves up for your Plan A so it's more of a second optional tactic rather than failure IMO.
KernowRed

Good point KernowRed - a Plan A and a Plan AA

He's like any other player, if we get an offer for him that we could use to improve the squad - enough to get a replacement and another player - we'll consider it. But unless we get an offer of around 19/20m he's not going anywhere

I think the message Agger was giving yesterday was defiantly goodbye
the statement of having the tattoo of YNWA on his knuckles and throwing his shirt into the crowd is a clear sign to the fans that i'm going but i don't want to.
i hope the owners keep him, we shall see
Jaydee ynwa {Ed019's Note - We don't want to sell him}

Hi Ed,

Do you think Agger will stay and sign a new contract?

I don't understand the problem to be honest. We don't need to sell to buy, Rodgers has said he doesn't want to lose Agger, and Agger is said to be happy at the club.

Surely this points to him signing a new contract? Unless he is asking for too much money or unacceptable clauses?

Thanks.

JRG {Ed002's Note - If Agger is happy and the club don't want to sell and the manager is happy as you say, then he will stay.}

If you read the posts this morning, you'll read about where that shirt actually went.

Just noticed the comment saying do we really need Allen as Shelvey put in a good performance, yes he did, showed a lot of maturity in his performance, but did you not see what happened when Adam and Spearing came on?! Absolutely awful, they were caught in possession, slow on the ball, looked for the pass back not forward. Allen will complement the team well, and with Henderson hopefully being eased in as he was supposed to last year a midfield to develop.

Welsh Steve

Spearing and Adam playing ahead of Carroll is wrong on so many levels...

Open question for all reds. Who would you rather have with Borini and Suarez in a front 3?
Scott Sinclair
Adam Johnson
Theo Walcott

(
or Downing? ;)
)

None of them. People really need to wake up and see Dempsey is a quality experienced player that can play in that system. Not to mention he is a goalscorer. He is the one for me but not for more than £10m

Slowpoke

Walcott > Downing > Sinclair > Johnson

Kev.

Theo Walcott all day.

Id take adam johnson, but i'll get killed on this sight, so i'll say walcott ;)

Johnson a must

zade6

I would honestly keep downing and play him, walcott is fast but needs an end product, johnson im not so sure on, downing played well yesterday and hopefully will prove his worth this season, he has the potential, just needs to be sure of himself! I understand I will be in the minority here though!

Alan Partridge

Adam johnson

Agree with Slowpoke - Dempsey

cozinoz

I'd take Walcott, I'm a fan of his, think he's wasted at Arsenal because they don't use him right, he's shown flashes of a big talent in the past and he'd give us some much needed pace. Sinclair has potential but I'm not much of a fan, he runs down blind alleys too often, but he has enough pace and goal threat that he'd be a good signing. I like Adam Johnson, he scores goals and he's dangerous, but he's often too conservative - a signing like that could go either way. Downing would do a decent job there, but my concern is that he doesn't hold enough of a goal threat. Dempsey should be seen as a good option as he's smart, scores goals and has great movement.

Red Ollie

Dempsey for bait of needed experience in tough games.

Expect Carroll, Hendo, Adam, Cole, Kelly possibly Sterling to start against Bayern on sunday.

BR will then be able to fully evaluate progress, and judge 1st team positioning more.

Sorry but last night Adam, just didnt look interested.
The whole tempo of the game dropped dramatically. Maybe he knows he is on the way out?

Jonjo, very very impressed with this guy give him another year to mature, dont loan him out and hopefully he will make that final push.

Lucas, no apparent worries slotted back in as though he never left, BR's own hingepin.

Borini, Suarez & Gerrard, Stevie has obviously been given his free role back al la 2008-2009 season ( top scored). Borini & Suarez linked well, you can see why BR was keen to bring in Borini, the guy doesnt stop running and has good vision and positional sense, this guy will get better and better i just have a feeling. Suarez, was his usual pesky self, only thing i noticed is perhaps BR has told him to sit on shoulder of the last man, last season he would drop deep a lot and build from there.Obviously not used to this as flagged offside quite a few times, no doubt he will learn tactics to cut that down.

Enrique, Dagger, Skrts solid as normal, Enrique seems to be passing earlier which please me as he began to dwell on the ball too much last season and resorted to the hoof, or lost posesion. Skrts didnt look too pleased when subbed, but first home game and 700 appearances BR probably felt he had to give carra 10 minutes.
Johnson, i hope to see him scoring double figures this season, he fills in the gaps when possesion is lost on attack very well, and consistently good with the ball, and has an eye for the goal.Probably one of the first names on the team sheet for me.

Downing, gave yet another consistent performance, nothing to really make himself stand out, he is our new Kuyt.

Not really sure if it was just with the team being getting used to BR and new systems, but it looked to me as though it was a 4-1-3-2 formation, which to me is one of the best formations if everything clicks into place.

Roll on 18/8/12 !
Piddy.

Decent post.i would like to say though. Im pretty sure suarez wasnt actually offside. maybe once at the most. The linesmen were terrible.

Why did Carroll not feature? Was it his groin problem?

AC's groin looked fine as he warmed up along the sidelines. We were just saving him as plan Z against Bayer L's huge CB's on Sunday.

Hi eds n reds! great site and great game by.the lads! just wanted to point out to every1 asking for andy to be sold and that he cant fit into BRs system...please remember that were competing in 4 different competition and were gonna face several different types of opposition were andys style will be a bonus..plus the lad clearly wants to stay and fight for his position...but that's just my opinion!

Eds could you please clarify something for me?

Daniel Agger played against Gomel in the Europa league. Doesn't that make him ineligible to play in the Europa league or Champions league with any other club? That was my understanding but i've always been confused by this. What i am getting at is that would surely cool interest from clubs like Barca or Man City.

Also great game tonight. I think the way we played was most pleasing. Great passing. Also good to see Allen is all but signed. I think he will only help our transition to Rodgers' game plan.

Cheers,

Geoff {Ed019's Note - I think it is just the Europa League}

I reckon if he goes to a champions league team he will be eligible. Remember when Torres went to chelsea although he played in Europa league for us was able to play for them

hi eds all reds went to the game last night, with my 7yr old lad, he loved it on the kop lol. i thought some of the football was excellent . borini looks very good to me. the singing for agger was amazing, shows how much we dont want him to go and andy carroll got fantastic support to , that pleased my boy hes got carroll on his shirt!! i might be in the minority here , but ive changed my mind about a player i saw us linked with , sinclair of swansea. i know , another swansea player, but when i saw him play for team gb , he really made a difference. if we cant get rameriaz or a.johnson then sinclair would be a good alternative. lucas looked great again last night , you dont what youve got till its gone! but hes back!! good luck to all redmen for the new season!! godbless96 all redmen steviep62. {Ed049's Note - cheers Stevie}

Morning eds and fellow reds, I didn't get chance to watch the game last nite so just been reading the match report on bbc website, they r saying agger was sporting a new tattoo, you'll never walk alone across his knuckles, is this true and if it is surely that's him saying he's going nowhere,
Keep up the good work eds

Scouse pie {Ed049's Note - Yes, He did sport a tattoo which read as 'YNWA'.}

Can anyone remember last week after the first leg, when some fans were calling for Rodgers head.

I know we shouldn't get excited, but last nights performance was very encouraging. The real change for me was the tempo.

Also thought the team looked strong.
And think we only need 2 signings that will start. And some
Squad players. Also really hoping agger stays.

Allen will obviously come in, and looks like he will take shelveys place. Then think we need a pacy winger, or some form of Target man (higuian, but that won't happen) think Dempsey would fit in with the style.

Starting xi.

Reina.

Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique

Gerrard Lucas Allen

? ? ? Suarez Borini

Subs : Carroll shelvey Henderson carra Kelly downing Gk

Opinions/ thoughts ? ?

Push Suarez out to the right and play Carrol through the middle. Make him the target man

Rob

Dempsey, wallcott or Adam Johnson either one an I'd be a happy red ynwa

Im guessing Allen is to have a medical this morning.. to be signed and announced this afty hopefully! top player, cant really say I've seen him play but after watching aload of different youtube videos i cant say im not impressed - Welcome to LFC J.Allen

Don

This is the problem with YouTube mate- if you watch a YouTube video of an Npower League 2 striker he will look ten times the player Lucas Leiva is. Obviously we all know how true that is! If you want to watch him properly find some 90 minute highlights of a Swansea game on the internet.

Kenny's football impression int he first 2 zones was evident with the BRs press from the front evident in the final third. Wow, love u both.

I remember reading Rush, where he mentions how he was told he is the first line of defence, and thats what Suarez was yesterday. Never watched Rush play, but reading him sounded similar to watching the team defending from the front line yesterday.

Btw, did anyone notice, we paid our tribute and share to the woodwork also, with Gerrard hitting the post in the second half.

Hoping Agger stays and Carroll too.

10 Aug 2012 09:32:52
A very encouraging performance last night. Could see Brendan's 4Ps being implemented to various degrees.

Lots of positives to take from last night; but most importantly for me was Suarez, Gerrard, Lucas, Agger, Skrtel and Reina all on the same pitch for what must have been the 1st time. If we could have that core of players on the pitch for a majority of our games this season we will have a real chance of pushing much closer for Top Four.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves, this was Gomel who I would say are probably Championship level

But there was definite progress

Reina looked rusty as he did drop a couple of shots IMO.

Agree with Dan lastnite was good but we need options when teams park the bus.. Q big Andy to bulldoze his way through with a power header... Plus i think he can play on the ground. I think Andy should stay.

Agree absolutely, we should hve that option- it would be crazy to sell him I think. He can really change a game.

10 Aug 2012 09:22:32
Hi Ed's, I was at the game yesterday...and haven't seen this reported at all, when Andy Carroll went to warm the whole main stand and kop stood up and applauded him....this just shows that the vast majority of fans want him to stay
Thanks
Kabir

Was a part of that, also he scored a blinder practicing, the kop applauded him for that too. hope he stays, don't get the feeling he wants to leave.

League predictions for next season:
1. Arsenal if they keep van Persie
2. man city
3. Man united
4. Liverpool
5. Newcastle
6. Spurs
7. Chelsea

I'd say that shocks some people. However I think arsenal look a really solid team this year. Man city haven't strengthened but they all ready have a top team. I think it could be the start of the decline for united unless they buy big. Tottenhamhave brought in a poor manager in my opinion who has no knowledge of the game. He tried to play barca style football with mourinhos team. I think Newcastle looked really good with the signing of cisse in the second half of the season and could even sneak into champions league spots. Chelsea have bought a lot of world class young players but I think this will be a difficult year as they try to settle and change there style of play. They could win the league the following year though.

I agree with eveything except i would swap newcastle with chelsea. if arsenal keep RVP they will be extremely strong

Players like hazard and oscar wont need a full season to settle and while i appreciate the optimisum about us to be honest we are not a top 4 club yet.
my predictions are
1. manchester city
2. arsenal (regardless if they sell or keep van persie)
3. manchester utd
4. Cheslea
5. spurs
6. liverpool
7. everton
8. newcastle

i think defenders will finally get onn to how cisse plays for newcastle so he will struggle to be as prolific while since my dad is a rangers fan i have seen naismith and jelavic play together they are a good partnership. liverpool need to settle for the next 2 season so the players can finally get used to and comfortable with rodgers style of play and stability with a manager for more than one season.

1..Man City
2..Man Utd
3..Chelsea
4..Arsenal
5..Spurs
6..LIVERPOOL

At this moment in time I think we are still 3 quality players short of pushing for 4th place, however that could change between now and the end of August. Another season of transistion I'm afraid. Hope I'm wrong.

U sir, are an absolute looney... And to say that AVB is a poor manager, just shows what kind of knowledge u have... Jus because the players failed him at chelsea dosnt meen he dont know his fotball...cause he sucked when managing porto also?

As Joe Allen is a holding player, will he be used as back up for Lucas, or played alongside him?

Adam {Ed029's Note - I would expect to generally see a midfield three of Lucas, Allen and Gerrard}

And damn, thats a strong midfield... I would also like to see gerrard upfront with borini and suarez, and let shelvey get couple games in midfield with lucas and allen... Then shelvey could concentrate more on the offensive part of the game... Ive had big hopes for jonjo ever since hes debut for charlton, and i find him one of the most exiting young midfielders in england, but he needs to start getting some games so he can develop.
Sorry for wall of text and and bad english

Funny how last week we were terrible against weak opposition and BR was no good as manager and he was buying the wrong players and not signing the bug name superstars and then a week later he is a great fella with a great system and his signings are suddenly going to be world beaters all after one game against the same weak opposition!! Maybe now all those who doubted will give full support to BR and the team. There will be bad days and maybe more bad than good at first but given time and support he will get it right as long as we don't turn on him cause he under enough pressure as is without extra pressure added from our own supporters. A new beginning a fresh start.... The future looks good.

Well it was an excellent game. Liverpool played very well. The thing that struck me more than anything was the players were relaxed and really enjoying themselves. True Gomel weren't 5 star opposition, but you always felt Liverpool could up the tempo if they needed to. I think Rodgers is correct to be cautious in not building up the fans expectations to much. Remember Bill Shankly was 46 when he came to a second division Liverpool. He and the players and the club grew together. That is what will happen here I think ( He also got rid igf 24 players in his first 12 months and brought in the foundations of the teanm he wanted. Something similar may occur with us over the next 12 months. Don't be surprised). RED LENIN

10 Aug 2012 09:06:45
Watched last nights game, and the team played very well, with players comfortable on the ball and 1-2 passing.

Very solid performance, and except for Shelvey who did play very very well, id say thats going to be our starting 11 if everyone stayed etc. I d just see Allen replacing Shelvey thoe.

Our bench is therefore now very weak? BR aint stupid playing Suarez & Stevie G in the same role as Torries and Stevie used to damage teams. Steve G has obv got a free role again :) Borrini and Downing looked better, but i think Downing needs to get on some strength program like Glen Johnson has been as gets out muscled too easily for me.

I think we do need to get any players now thoe if we can attract them as we are wafer thin. I still want Gaston Rameriz in thoe ! we need more quality in the midfield 2. and if Lucas get injured ALLEN can do that job so now need someone creative ?

I expect Bellamy, Joe Cole, C Adam and Spearing still to go.

If Agger does go and i certainly dont want him to go and we do get 23m and Adam Johnson (with option to buy) that would be a good deal im afraid to say.

As long as we dont get anymore Swansea players. !

If the loan deals for SURIN or, L. DIARRA would do for midfield? Johnson/Walcott for a winger ? plus walcott can play upfront. And id still sign BUTLAND now from BRUM before his price goes up and leave at BRUM.

Personally wouldnt go for DEMPSEY thoe, if AC goes we need a top striker in with the movement and technique like another SUAREZ but perhaps a younger and up and coming version !

Though*

YNWA! (Adam)

Well put mate

10 Aug 2012 08:37:38
Well. What a game. Positive from Suarez couple of challenges he had last night he would have gone down easy but was amazing last night deserved a goal.
Borini linked up well, Lucas looked sharp, the the passing looked really good but one thing I noticed we didn't have the usual struggle going forward we normally look lost passing and playing back but all credit to players team manager I know was only gomel but if that's how things gonna be well excited :-):-):-):-):-) john

We always looked weak in the final third. And when we did break into the final third we would hit the post...lol

10 Aug 2012 08:37:33
I can't believe people are having a go at Downing. He put in a decent shift last night and is our joint top scorer!!

Downing played well i just hope he plays well for 35-45 games. I think the fans slating him always look for someone to pick on. I read a post from a muppet slating Adam going through the whole game i mean what a d**k he is still a liverpool player he my not be my fave player but i will still support him because he plays for my club. Fans need to get behind players not slate them if they make a mistake. I think Downing will be a lot better this season like a new player.

Watched the game last night at anfield couldnt believe how much lovevandy carrol got when he was warming up this guy is loved massively and you can see he doesn't want to go and the performance from the lads last night was really good quick short passing everything was chased back instead of just booting it we played football yet again agger was soild

Ramythered

Why is he loved i dont know? Hes not good enough to play for lfc, im glad br can see that and hopefuly we can maximum value from him to invest in a top striker or winger. RedTurk

Disagree, he is a game changer. It will be a huge mistake to sell him. He is just developing into a goal machine. Downing was terrible last season!!

KNice to see the rainbow of positivity from you redturk. Try supporting the players - all of them, you never know you might find it refreshing.
Huddz red

If we had carroll on we would of scored more how many times did we put the ball in the box and had no one there or big enough to get it. ndy I think would be a great spearhead for us in a front threeand I know people say hes not quick enough but this system requires a high line so hes not going to be running that far. And if were pinned back well have a target just in case.

Andy should stay and givern time hell be a beast in the prem league if not hell always do well against us

Daniel agger not leaving dempsey not moving as I said about to week ago Allen deal not a easy deal to complete not 100% and I expect a cheeky late bid from chelsea for rvp

Whats the difference between a normal bid and a cheeky bid.

A cheeky bid? I hate this expression!

What the hell does it mean? Do Chelsea shout there bid louder above Arsenals in a cheeky manner...?

A cheeky bid is done with one eyebrow raised. It's an old corporate tactic to fool the seller into thinking youre just testing the water when in fact youre deadly serious.

Hi Eds, do you really think we need Allen given Shelvey's performances in the recent weeks? {Ed029's Note - Personally yes I do, Allen will set the tempo and in my opinion be a good signing, plus Shelvey can still be very rash in the tackle etc. We need a squad to compete in all four competitions so if Shelvey doesn't go out on loan he will definitely get game time. Shelvey has really improved though and looks to be fulfilling his potential and I think he could genuinely be the natural successor to Gerrard in the long term}

I hope shelvey stays,it's a long season with premier league, carling cup,fa cup and the europa league.

Totally agree Ed 029, spot on as usual

Mos

There is no doubt in my mind that Shelvey will one day be Gerrard's successor and that that was why we tooki him. I have always thought that from Day 1. RED LENIN

Agred Ed - in some ways Shelvey reminds me of a young Gerrard, ok he doesn't have that burst of pace but technically very good and not shy with the odd rash challenge!

Ooh yeah, finaly others start seeing shelvey for the talent he is... Has a confident thats out of this world, and exactly the type of player we need in the midfield. Since we prob cant rely on gerrard to play everygame, i think it would be a mistake to loan him out...

Spot on ed, shelvey looks to have come on leaps and bounds. He will become a mainstay in our midfield for years to come. Just have to control that aggression !

Where are all the moaners today? Funny how they crawl back into the woodwork when things start looking rosy. Suarez new contract. Borini looking good. Rogers looking at his right depth. Liverpool playing top football and winning. FSG financing. Allen signing. Others looking likely.
Oh, and here is Buck's most recent comment on the Agger situation:

"We don't want to sell him and he is a player who is very important for me."

Doesn't it pay to have faith and support your club, manager and players. We haven't achieved anything other than a victory against Gomel so far but if that game doesn't give you reason to feel extremely positive about the future of LFC then you may as well give up on football.

Quaresma talk is only to try to force the dempsey move through. I doubt quaremsa interests brenden rogers

Is Rodgers throwing out some smoke screens i see mmmmmmmmmmm

10 Aug 2012 04:59:13
i know this has been said but feel the need to say it again. tonight's performance was really good from the boys. already starting to see brendan rodgers stamp. our front three excite me and the movement of borini and suarez is something that we have been craving for years. no doubt that two will only become more fluid and our threat up front will be potent.

how will andy carroll be able to fit into that system. if anything he will just slow things down. especially when we sign allen who plays a high tempo and likes to move the ball quickly. i think tonight has proven andy really wont fit into the style of play.

i am excited about the football we played tonight and hope that things just keep on developing. i think that we only really need to make one more signing, that signing being a winger in the mould of tello or ramirez. if we can find a player like that our forward line will be mobile and pacey and really be a threat.

surely that is the direction we need to be heading. one more thing, unless silly money comes in must keep agger. he is so solid and his vision and ball playing abilities are nearly unrivaled.

happy with how things are moving forward.

Allen is a done deal.
Dempsey will follow, matter of time.
BR will look for an option to boost up the front, most probably a target to boost Downing's position. The likes are Adam Johnson. Need a Defensive Midfield to back up Lucas.

Adam, Spearing and Carroll would be leaving.

Gerrard has only just turned 32and he looked fit as a fiddle last night, those legs have a few years left in them yet and I for one am looking forward to see properly seeing him link up with Suarez this season.

I know everyone one is happy with with liverpools game. but why would rodgers play 33yr old gerrard the whole game up 4 zip, and i would have rested suarez during the second half too. is rodgers a little bit crazy?

It was a European cup tie, We have a friendly sunday if people need a rest, this isn't mid to end of season

Imagine a midfield of Allen, Lucas, gerrad. The opposition would never get the ball and if they do, Lucas will take it back(lol) and gerrard contanstaly linking up with Suarez/ borini/downing(?). SO EXCITED!!

Football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass. It is terribly simple.

The best thing about tonights game (this mornings game for me being from Australia, woke up at 4am!) besides the crisp passing and Suarez's performance. Is that it seems to have united everyone on this site behind BR and the team.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I came on here and read all the positive posts. Hopefully the support continues, win lose or draw. It makes a nice change from all the negativity, im sure you all agree eds.

What's the point in comparing them two? They play in different positions. And why would Man City go in for him when they have loads of world class wingers/att mids and he needs more playing time and isn't ready for a big move just yet.

Evening all.

Few points from Anfield tonight

1. Borini looked every part what we were promised. Hard working from the first second, linking up superbly across the front with Suarez, Gerrard and Enrique. Held a high line, stayed out wide when needed and has intelligent movement. Oh and as we've now seen can finish.

2. Downing on the other hand looked worse than last year, slow stodgy movement, innefectual on the right and either no understanding or no trust from those around him. I'm sorry I've really tried to back him but I just can't see any improvement.

3. Enrique, composed and solid defensively, quite happy to have him left as last man at corners etc but he just doesn't look like he has either the speed of thought or action going forward with the ball at his feet. Eds, are there any LBs we've made any official enquiries about who have the Clichy type attacking threat needed in Rodgers system?

4. Jonjo, needs some.kind of therapy! Any Prem ref would have given him 2 red cards tonight. He really could cost us dearly with those unnecessary lunges. Happy Allen can walk into that spot.

5. Lucas looked remarkable after such an injury, no timidness, on the pace and strong in the tackle. I honestly thought it would take much longer to get back for him.

6. Why the hell did no one else sing a welcome to our new manger. Shame on you!

With Allen in for Shelvey, and a replacement for Downing that 11 looks very well balanced and a very promising start.

YNWA!

FatJanMolby

I thought Downing played well, put in some crosses, beat his man quite a few times and tracked back to win the ball back too.

Football. A game of opinions.

What game were you watching? - certainly not the one at Anfield last night, Downing had a very positive input on the game.

I think people are being too subjective when they are talking about Downing's display last night, giving him bad reviews because he is Stewart Downing.

He had a good game in my opinion, nothing spectacular but definitely not as bad as people have made out.

JRG

Nothing at all wrong with downing in that game

Innefectual?

1. I agree with you.
2. Really? You haven't seen any improvement. Imo he has improved the most out of the senior squad so far. I think we should keep him for a while.
3. I think he looked good though.
4. I think it's only because he is so young. Give him some time and he will improve in that aspect.
5. Agree with you on that one. One of my mates had the same injury as lucas but it took him ages to recover. Credit to Lucas' hard work and our medical staff.

If you take lucas from that team, you will see the same replacement in the side that struggled last season, when he got a serious injury.Kenny made gigantic mistake not getting someone in January and relying on Spearing.I really hope Brendan doesn't do the same thing.Lucas was superb last night.

Think about Gerrard's first games sent off at Everton etc... It a learning curve so I disagree and I also disagree about Downing I though he looked at home caused problem and fitted the system well. I'm not saying he was amazing but certainly wasn't out of place.

Your points 1, 3 & 5 are correct in my view. However on point 2. Were you watching the same match as me? I think Downing played pretty well. Sure he didn't set the world on fire but he was consistent and and seemed to play better than he did all last season.

And as for your point 4. I think Jonjo is being played along with Gerrard to get experience (he's still very young) and in my opinion will be a good replacement for Gerrard, when he finally hangs up his boots. Jonjo is more of a forward playing central midfielder and would fit nicely in Gerrard's position when he is rested or (hopefully doesn't happen much this season) is injured.

To that last post, I had exactly that the sane thoughts about comparison with SG at Everton however I'm pretty sure looking back through the misty memories thatGerrard was a much better prospect and even so he was thoroughly admonished for those kind of tackles until he gained some responsibility.

Downing was on the opposite side of the pitch 1st half and I don't remember him in our half in the 2nd so i saw less of him than anyone else, but yes in my subjective opinion I was hoping for a lot more than I saw, especially considering borinis first anfield appearance in comparison. I really wanted to see Sterling given a run in that position.
FJM

Downing was much more positive than last season, but still has some work to do in getting behind the defender. a few crosses were begging for a big man to be on the end of to nod home.

No chants for Rodgers mainly as no one has come up with one yet! Lots for Dagger though.

Sahin would be a major signing for Liverpool.
Gerard is 33 an misses 40% of our games every year.
Sahin along with the signing of Allan would give us the strength in depth we need.
Id love to see shelvey given a chance but I think it's one season to early for the lad.
Just wait tho shelvey will be top quality.
Sahin Dempsey Walcott is all we need. If we keep Carroll an Agger!

Gerrard is 32

I don't think it's one season too early for Shelvey.

Gerrard does not miss 40% of games every year

Gerrard had a bad couple of years previously to that he was ever present in the team.

How old are you?

Morning Eds,
Good performance from liverpool vs gomel.
-Is it really necessary for lfc to sell before buying another player? Why we need to sell DAgger if he's committed to club & instead we need to buy replacement for Carra not DAgger.
-Newcastle still interested in Carrol? Eds, do u expect they will try again to bid for him?
-With Joe Allen deal agreed, i cant see charlie adam getting place in the midfield. Is Dempsey bid + adam as part of deal still on? So that means Dempsey will be our winger/attc mid. So we can dismiss other winger target like Ramirez, adam johnson etc. Right?
-Is lfc interest in Porto left back genuine? Hope its true since we only got Enrique. Jack robo might not be ready yet. Hw much Porto asking for?

Thanks Eds. Hope u dont mind my short question, but long post.

ItsJimmyAgain. {Ed019's Note - We do not HAVE to sell before buying, money is available. I expect Newcastle to bid for Carroll again. Adam is being offered to Fulham, and they may accept the part exchange seeing that they have sold some central midfielders. I think more than one winger will sign. I don't know of interest in Pereira.}

Amazing performance tonight! Fast-tempo, flowing attacking football that was both effective and appealing to watch. Just loving it!

Need potentially three additions (i.e. Allen, Tello and Butland). Get rid off Adam, Spearing, Cole, Carroll, Doni, Jones.

GK: Reina, Gulasci, Butland (Backout on loan to Birmingham).
DEF: Agger, Skrtel, Coates, Kelly, Enrique, Johnson, Flanagan, Robinson, Sama, Wisdom.
MID: Gerrard, Lucas, Allen, Henderson, Shelvey, Suso, Coady.
ATT: Suarez, Borini, Tello, Downing, Sterling, Morgan, Pacheco.

Definately a strong squad that is up for competing on all fronts this season!

I guess most would have seen that Joe Allen was at Anfield for the game and that after the match BR said he hopes the deal will be done in 24 hours. I really think he is a player with potential, but just wondering eds; with Allen very very close and LFC already having alot of CMs, is there a likely hood one will have to leave?

Gerrard looked great tonight, I think he will have a big year. Hes not at his best in a 4-4-2 which we played too much with Roy and Kenny. He has to play too reserved in that role. He works best in a 3 man midfield like he did in Rafas day where the roles are essentially defender, passer, creator. Back then it was Mascherano (defender), Alonso (passer) and Gerrard (creator). Now it should be Lucas (defender), Allen (passer) and Gerrard. People will get too worked up about what we call the formation, sometimes it will look like a 4-3-3, others a 4-2-3-1, others a 4-2-1-3. It will depend on the situation and opponent exactly how the midfield triangle turns but those will essentially be their roles defender-passer-creator.

I thought the problem under kenny was that he was injured and only recovering.

Just watched the first half on Lfc tv and loved watching us in control. Although I have been a fan of shelveys he lost the ball from lack of control a few times in this half. Thought borini looks inventive and hard working. Suarez was amazing, defence looked solid appart from when shelvey gave the ball away. Even downing looked impressive-ish. Can't wait to see us against better opposition
Cheers gav

Hi I live in Canada the game wasn't shown over here.
Can anyone give me an update on how our passing was have we improved?
Also updates on Lucas, borini, downing an shelveys performances?
Cheers
BC {Ed019's Note - Lucas was impressive, especially as he was back from injury he surpassed my expectations. Our passing was very good, some great one touch passing between Suarez, Borini and Gerrard featured throughout the game. Downing and Shelvey gave solid performances, however Shelvey was reckless in a few challenges, and needs to improve his pressing/tackling imo. Excellent performance on the whole}

Thanks very much for replying!
YNWA

BC i live in Canada also, the Europa League coverage is awful here. Watched on first row sports. Thought we controlled the game, when in possession it was crisp passing, switching from wing to wing quite a lot. I am starting to wonder if Downing had a twin brother playing for us last year as he actually provided more in 1 game than we saw most of last season. Suarez was amazing, however would love to see him keep his cool more, the complaining when caught offside doesn't do him any favours. Borini was lively and loved the way he checked his run to convert the deflection for the first goal. Adam even had a good game once he came on. My one concern, Skrtel did not look happy being subbed, hope there isn't anything in that. As mentioned by others Jonjo was kind of hit and miss, big fan of his and hope he takes his opportunities better than he did today.

ChrisE

Downing was disappointing again for me, I continually expect so much more from him. Honestly Glen is the reason the right side was effective even excluding his goal. Borini added so much more overall on the other side.

Agree on shelvey's need to improve defensively but he did really well otherwise imo.

Ska-oop

Borini worked really hard and was often in the right place at the right time. Loved his enthusiasm and energy - reminds me of a young Dirk Kuyt on baked beans

So, I have to ask, anyone else find the play of Borini tonight 'exciting'?

If the lad keeps it up, perhaps some of the moaners could perhaps apologize?

The kid has a good touch, passes well, isn't greedy, seems to finish decently, and works his absolute socks off, and is only 21. What more could you want?

Count me in the 'excited' category and hope to see him score a whole lot more before the season is over.

Definetely impressed with him.

What really impressed me was the intelligence of his movement. he was always able to find space in the box. his goal was typical of a good goalscorer in which in took up a great position, yes it was fortunate the ball came to him, and the finish was excellent- a perfect technique.
derryred

Agree with all the above, and I can only hope it keeps the moaners quiet for a while. I was actually surprised at how good Borini was, not that i doubted his potential, i just thought it might take him a few games or even weeks to get onto Gerrard and Suarez wavelength. May be too soon to say but can only hope theres some great work being done at training. Like I always say, at the end of the storm...

Couple of things I really loved about the game tonight:

- The amount of movement by the team was top notch. Fullbacks up to take shots, forwards back playing as fullbacks, mids all over the place, and the interchange of Suarez, Borini, Gerrard. Fantastic! Defending this has got to be an absolute nightmare.

- Pressure on the ball when we didn't have it. For whatever reason, last season we didn't do anything when we didn't have the ball until it crossed well into our half. This was much, much better.

- Lots of good and deserved kudos for many of the players for their game tonight already (Borini, Suarez, Gerrard, and Lucas!), but for me I'll reserve a special mention for Enrique. He's gotten a lot of stick on here recently, but he looked much better tonight I thought than he has in quite some time.

- And finally, a question. Is Glen Johnson left-footed? Beautiful strike.

If we can play this well all season, I'll be quite a happy supporter.

RDL

Calm down calm down, lfc played well tonight, but dont get carried away, that team was called grommet and they had wallace up front lol. if you finish 6th in the prem you will be doing well

Hate to say it but my guy feeling is that Daniel Agger is going, just the way the media have been handled when they speculate on his future makes me think that he's going, would be a terrible mistake and I don't believe there is a replacement that would fill his role well enough, he's part of the core of the team, do we really have the full backing of the owners if we have to sell our best players to buy others?

Your looking too much into this. he will only go if man city match our valuation of him- which i think will be silly money for city or barca to dish out on an injury prone defender, so he will stay.
