Both Origi and Remy passed medical. . Origi will sign tomorrow then jet back to France. Remy has signed and has now gone to New York to meet up with family before joining LFC next week. Both will be unveiled same time as Lovren, who incidentally is expected at Anfield to complete a medical tomorrow before jetting off to join the lads in Chigago. Cheers

Lallana may miss start of the season after suffering knee injury in training. .source: ssn

Believable9 Unbelievable0

Gutted about that!

Agree7 Disagree1

Thats why we need Gaitan or Shaqiri or even Konoplyanka.

Agree4 Disagree18

That's why, Chris, we have purchased the likes of Markovic, in case someone gets injured. It called squad depth, something we have a lot of in the attacking areas.

Agree15 Disagree0

Lets not forget that Sterling got his spot few years ago due to loss of form of other players.

what is to say that Ibe wouldn't get his chance now? or Suso? an injury does not mean we have to buy, unless its a long term injury like ACL or something. 6 weeks is long, I know, but I think we can cope.

"Didier Drogba will make his second debut against. "
Oh dear

Believable2 Unbelievable5

I'm chuffed they've bought a 36 year old striker, he won't get more than a dozen league goals at most, no matter how great he was three or four years ago.
Its a pity city won't do us a similar favour and sign bobby zamora.

Agree5 Disagree0

Sakho and lovren will tear him a new one mate.

Agree2 Disagree0

Drogba is nowhere near the player he was. I can't see him getting close to 12 goals.

I think everyone is missing the point.
My post was about how anyone can have a "second" debut

Not sure how fans of other clubs can read that forward line and feel confident about us not doing as well next season

Looking forward to seeing them all working together

As a wise old NFL commentator once put it:

Offense win matches
Defence win titles.

He is quite right.

Agree9 Disagree3

Much better post mate what we all like to read ;)

Agree5 Disagree0

Ken Aguero. . Last season we had offence but no defense and chelsea had the opposite. We came closer than them to winning it. ;)

Agree5 Disagree1

Goals win you games. A good defence just makes it easier.

Agree1 Disagree0

Ken and the NFL commentator are right.

City win titles because they have the likes of Kompany and Zabaleta. Chelsea won due to the likes of Terry and Cole. United - Vidic and Ferdinand.

We, and Arsenal, will struggle to win the title with the defences we have.

Let's hope we can improve it.

Agree2 Disagree0

I agree PerthRed, but let's not forget Chelsea were the only team that beat us home and away last season in the Prem, I believe. Also they made a good run in the Champions League with that woeful football. So, it depends in and on what context you go on.

Agree0 Disagree0

If you use world class players to park the bus a la Chelsea, chances are you won't lose the game

Having watched the match v Roma, I thought that the 2 Brazilian boys played well for LFC, not read much love for Lucas, I thought he had a decent game. Coutinho is progressing well and given the comments in the media, Brenda certainly thinks he can take him to the next level in his game. can't help thinking he could prob do with bulking up a touch like Sterling did. Fingers crossed have tickets to Sun Life on the 4th.

I think coutinho is a bit overrated . He is great with the ball at his feet but the amount of times he shoots dragging the ball wide every time . I think if markovic and lallana hit the ground running he wouldn't be starting ahead of that pair and sterling .

Agree1 Disagree5

I think Coutinho will improve each season, but you are right about his shooting, dreadful, he should be passing more to a better placed striker, I would however have him in my team .

Gaitan has a release clause of £35.6 million, and while Liverpool have the means to match that, the club hope to complete a deal for around £30 million.

The winger is highly-regarded for his pace and technique, and his displays for Benfica in the European competition last season saw him named in the Europa League Team of the Year.

Reports from France earlier this week suggested that Monaco had agreed personal terms with Gaitan, but had yet to come to an agreement with Benfica. As that deal stalls, the Reds are looking to swoop in and bring the player to Anfield.

Believable2 Unbelievable9

I really don't think were in for another winger mate.

Agree3 Disagree0

I wouldn't pay anywhere near that price

Agree3 Disagree0

Doesn't score enough goals or assist enough to command that kind of fee.

Agree2 Disagree0

He's not a 30m player. Neat and tidy, 20m tops. Wouldn't he be like our 10th signing? Can't see it myself unless Borini & Suso are both sold to fund it and create the necessary space in the squad.

Hi eds. As far as I have been told, we have bids on the table for Moreno AND Bertrand. What would be the situation if Sevilla and Chelsea both agree at the same time? Would we buy one or both? I'm assuming buying both would mean the end for Enrique.

I asked same question last night buddy. Please stop asking questions?, is what I got!

Agree0 Disagree2

{Ed002's Note - It is not what you got.}

Dezmond.

The repeaed asking of the same question is the prob's people on here and the Ed's have with you.

Coming on here day after day, expecting a different answer to a question asked the day before is boring to read and the Ed's are just p155ed with you because you seem to think things change overnight.

Transfer's take ages in some cases to complete. And you coming here every time newsnow updates asking if there reports are true, is not the way to get a response from the Ed's, who I am sure, have far better things to do.

Is it just me or anyone else feel kind of sorry for the Southampton fans. I know if a club came and took three of our best players in one window I would not be happy.

Believable10 Unbelievable2

It's a food chain. Just like Madrid and Barca taking players off pretty much any club they want. How will they spend the cash is the question? In the right hands they could put together a stronger squad. Same as we are doing with the Suarez money

Agree6 Disagree1

It's just how it is. They have been handsomely rewarded to the tune of 45m or so for the two guys approaching their prime and another 4m for a 32 year-old. They develop their own talent brilliantly and will have 50m to spend on replacements and enough to clear their (reported) 25m hole in their budget. There are similar precedents elsewhere - including this summer.

Chelsea could have taken FOUR players from the La Liga champions this summer. Costa & Felipe Luis for 50m, Courtois loan return and Tiago rejected the chance to return to Stamford Bridge.

I have a hunch that Liverpool can and will win the premier league within the next 2–3 years.

There was a little nativity in LFC's ability to close out last season, but who would have expected it to be so close?

Crucially, its defense that needs to be organized and strengthened. The 2–3 defensive reinforcements on the cards (lovren +?) will make the coming season.

Can Rodgers get more goals out of Coutinho? If so with Lambert, Sturridge and Sterling (+Remy) all on form Suarez will not be missed.

Can LFC beat their outstanding winning streak from last season? I believe so.

Believable3 Unbelievable2

Nativity?. . Are we expecting a few wise men and kings to arrive to bear gifts?

25 Jul 2014 19:52:24
hi all

im really happy that the deal for lovren is nearly done he has just improved the team by so much we need a left back as good as lovren, and moteno was not that left back, I know that ship has sailed but there must be a left vack who is top quality and has a buyout clause, if we want to win the prem then we have to pay the going rates for top players, the way I see it we can't replace suarez to try it will cost us a lot of money on a few platers, but if we get top quality defenders we will concede less goals meaning we don't have to score loads of goals, we can win games 1 - 0, the less goals we let in the less goals we will need to win, plus it will give mingolet a lot more confidence and make him a better keeper

Believable13 Unbelievable1

You're right! If a player has a £40mill buy out clause he must be amazing!

Agree0 Disagree0

Lovren will be great! Watched him quite a bit last season and thought him and Kompany were the 2 stand out defenders in the prem.

Hi Ed002,
I just don`t understand LFC transfer policy - Remy, Lambert, Origi? If we do sign all of these there`s no way the club will go for Reus or any other forwards. That will be it, or I am for a big very surprise before the window closes. Why not go for one world class or two very good ones instead of going for three decent?

Believable0 Unbelievable7

{Ed002's Note - It is never as simple as folks think.}

25 Jul 2014 19:52:27
It is though! You bid. you buy. medical, contract and hey presto! No seriously we would have all loved Reus or Vidal, especially Sanchez but it's not to be in this window.

Agree3 Disagree1

1, Maybe said player does not want to play for us as yet (until we are constantly in the champs league).

2.If above player is injured who replaces him? Someone from the U21 squad or would you prefer 2 x "Marque" signings per position.

3. After no Champs League the squad is on the thin side - bringing in 2 players will not help; put pressure on other players and the risk of injury is therefore higher (from over playing / tiredness).

4. In the majority of cases (Lallana, Lambert, Lovren, Remy) it would appear BR is looking for players who can settle and add to the 1st team straight from the off. No waiting 12 - 18 months for your "Marque" player to settle and already ask for a transfer as your no longer playing champs league as you only added a little quality that took time to settle.

It's not that difficult really.

Question about Moreno

From what I can gather, our latest offer for the lad, still sits on the table

Has the super cup final got anything to with Sevillas reluctance to sell right now, or even the player himself, wanting to play in it?

Thanks in advance eds

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - as far as I can tell, their issue is with wanting more of the payment up front. I don't know of any reluctance to sell because of that, though it could well be a factor. For a club like Sevilla, money is in very short supply, winning any trophy could provide a huge boost.}

Ed001 if we wanted the player why would we not pay a little more upfront we have to pay the fee wether its now or later still has to be paid unless they want the full fee but still it would have to be paid at some point is that normal operating practice clubs pay little up front surely could negotiate fee down with a 1 off payment but what do I know hence the question lol

Agree1 Disagree0

If you're getting paid £1000 this month and £1000 next month you cant's pay £1100 this month but you could easily pay £600 this month and £600 next month.

I know this is very simplified but it is all about managing cash flow. The club has been spending money it doesn't have for too long already.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi Giblet,

If I want to buy something and not pay everything up front then chances are I'll pay a deposit then agree payment terms on the remaining amount (maybe pay nothing for 12 months; may be 12 equal payments of x amount).

Now say I have £10 in my pocket but I need £20 for the deposit - how do I get that money?

I don't have it to put down so I could go and loan it - however that £10 is also going to now cost me £40 to repay it.

So it something was £100 to buy but with the loan of the amount and the other payments it now costs £200 then I have to question if it is worth buying.

Just remember that past deals coming in and out of the club will impact cash flow (as will numerous other things) - therefore I may only need £1 more but I cannot stretch to that amount without fear of the costs snowballing and causing me issues further down the line - i.e. we wouldn't want to miss out on Europe due to FFP or administration and points deductions.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2014 07:16:53
Hey ed01!
But are we actually still trying for him, or are we focused on Bertrand now? I've been considering that there might be a condition for the Supercup to pass before he agrees to join us, but Ed002's comments seem to suggest we have moved on, and with good reason - do you have any info on that?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - as far as I am aware we have moved on and are not willing to meet Sevilla's conditions and they are not willing to agree to ours. I don't know of any bearing from future matches.}

25 Jul 2014 18:37:37
Hi Eds, I thought Lucas played very well against Roma, think there's a chance he could play his way into plans or is he still likely to leave? What's the deal depending on? Thanks!

Believable2 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - deal depends on what he wants to do. There are offers on the table for him, it is down to him to choose one or reject and stay.}

25 Jul 2014 20:08:01
Could I kindly ask where those offers have come from please Ed?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Napoli is one, Inter were another but now they look to be about to sign Medel I would expect they have moved on. Atleti were showing interest, but Tiago has re-signed so their interest might be gone too.}

Eds 001

With the possible departures of some of our senior players like Agger, Skyrtel and Reina, if other targets are brought in to replace them.

Would the club / BR allow them to leave to another prem club, if the interest was registered and the fee matched the clubs valuation?

In the midst of the barmy transfer window and the nonsense that gets wrote in the red top rags, those 3 never ever seem to get connected to anyone which I find odd because let's face it, anyone could write for that crowd, and connect a CB to a club who need a CB ( saying that's its all copied and pasted from one paper to another. then .com add another £60M onto everything)

Or do the club have a certain policy, for certain players that would not allow them to play for another premiership club, like Suarez

Or is it just simple case of nobody is actaully interested, or the players have preferences, or are there wages a problem?

thanks in advance Eds

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - their wages are the main issue. As far as I am aware there is no reason we would not sell to another Prem club.}

25 Jul 2014 18:05:13
Really happy if we get Lovren. Like him a lot, I think him and Sakho could be a great partnership. Personally I'd let Skrtel leave if we can find him a suitor.

All these comparisons made between us and Spurs last year in my opinion are ridiculous. We've signed proven premier league players in the main. Not players from all over the globe who need to adapt to the country etc.The 2 players we have signed from abroad look to have great futures ahead of them.

Also changing topic, bit late but I was really impressed by Emre Can against Roma. He looks ready made for the premier league. Reminds me a bit of Hendo, work rate and pressing of the opposition looks great. Powerful and pretty quick, could be a really good player.

Believable7 Unbelievable5

25 Jul 2014 18:32:15
Skrtel is much better than agger i'm afraid so agger will be leaving before skrtel amigo.

Agree3 Disagree8

Very excited about Can myself, think him and Hendo in midfield will be the future of lfc for years to come.

Agree9 Disagree1

I think Can offers our attack a lot if Rodgers decides to play him BESIDE Henderson (or with Gerrard). He's robust, and he gets forward frequently, with high intensity. He's very versatile in that he can play multiple positions across the midfield (remind you of a young Gerrard?).

As for preseason, he did a pretty good job of keeping the ball from what little I've watched of him, and the longer he was on the pitch, the more he came into the game. Prefer an unsteady beginning to players that die in that latter stages, tbh. Needs to integrate a bit better with his teammates, but that will come with time.

Seeing as Harry/Dream asked for it
here's a Liverpool rumours team taking inspiration from dags' s on the gunner page
here goes
Goalkeeper-Ed002
Ever Reliable never puts a foot wrong
Fullbacks-Mikey1985 & Bobarton
Center Backs-Ozone & Waro
they could just fill the opposing strikers with negativity
Defensive Midfielder-The Real AG (Captain)
A leader with a calm and composed head
Box to Box Central Midfielder- East Midlands Scouser
Has a lot of stamina can run throughout the pitch all day (seeing his long posts;-))
Attacking Midfielder-Big Al
He loves (rather too much) messi
Left Winger-Ken Aguero
he can charm opposite fullbacks with his lucky underpants
Right Winger-Reet2107Liverpool
I am keeping myself here surely a 15 year old kid could add some creativity and speed in this team 40 year "pot bellied men" lol:-D
Striker-Red Rum
tends to lose temper often but is a rough and tough striker like our very own rickie

so that people is my team capable of putting real madrid and Barcelona to shame
Ed 001 will be the manager
apologies if I missed anyone

Looks like a fee has been agreed for Lovren. 20 million pounds does sound a bit steep, but we still get a quality defender at his peak who should form a very good understanding with Sakho. Just wish the Remy deal would get sorted soon, BR needs to play him along side Sturridge as much as possible in pre season to develop a good understanding between them. A quality left back is all we need, and we are set for the season.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

25 Jul 2014 19:47:37
Lovren's medical has been rescheduled for a fortnights time, as it will take a little while to join his head back to his body!
You have a real bargain there-only double plus what you could have signed him for a year ago but turned the opportunity down.

Just keep buying up the gravel, one day BR might find a diamond but if he doesn't he could be in a lot of trouble.

Agree0 Disagree6

Obviously you're not a SH fan at all, otherwise you'd show support for three players who just brought your club up to an amazing position in the league and brought you enough transfer money to remain sustainable for the next few years.

Agree0 Disagree0

So you took the risk, he proved his worth and you doubled your money. Why so bitter? You've been Arsenals feeder club for a decade, now your ownership has changed and your squad is being decimated because the new regime don't care about the sport or the club. Not our fault players don't want to stay at a club that's sinking into the solent faster than Portsmouth after Arry worked his magic!

Hi to all the EDs and fellow REDS

I love it when newspapers/websites write 'Liverpool Swoop for. ' I just don't think we've 'Swooped' for anyone for a very long time. So far signings are very good, but £40M+ for Vidal is far far far too much! Come on have we gone mad? Reus, great player but at that price? Maybe that's the market these days! Checking sports news every 5 minutes. crazy times! I'm sure Brendan will make the right signing. Never ever write Brendan off!

I wasn't talking on behalf of the whole lfc fan base in was merely making an observation. Search betrand anywhere online and you will see for yourself that most fans don't want him in the team

Of course we will all support him but its true that most of us fans agree that we should be aiming higher especially in defence where we was poor last season

Kebab.

Believable2 Unbelievable3

Look mate, I myself am not too keen on us signing Bertrand either but that is how it is. U need to accept it, what fans want does not necessarily happen. It also means BR and the coaching staff have high hopes for Brad Smith. I can see the lad kicking whoever is our first choice LB outa the team in a couple of years. Maybe BR only sees Bertrand as a cheap short term solution until Smith is ready to make the position his own. IMO Ricardo Rodriguez is the only LB worth spending big bucks on, otherwise I am ok with Bertrand for the time being.

Agree0 Disagree0

Bertrand is better than your giving him credit for. I personally believe he would be a starting player for us, as we're rather weak with only Enrique as a left back, Johnson, Flanagan (obv both right footed) being forced to play on the wrong side and, of course, young Brad and Jack Robinson.

We have our eye on a few, however. I'm certain SOMEONE will come in.

Nah mate, Shaqiri has decided to re-invent himself as a left back so he can play for LFC. This was the master plan all along.

Just got back from watching Adelaide United play Malaga and got to say Luis Alberto stood out. He had a surprising turn of speed, great passing and crossing and scored an exceptional goal top corner from a free kick. It's just a preseason friendly but certainly looked like he has a lot of ability and potential

Believable5 Unbelievable0

Good player, just lacking experience

Agree1 Disagree0

I feel like he hasn't played his last game for Liverpool (just like Suso).

Agree0 Disagree0

Blocked
It was that turn of speed, for me which I didn't think he had in him, that held him back last season.
The pace and physicality of the EPL is not easy to adapt to.
I hope he does well this season and comes back a better player.
He most definitely has the technical ability already.

The difference made to the Newcastle attack by Loic Remy's was clearly positive. They hit 43 goals in 38 Premier League games, with 39 of those 43 goals scored in the 24 games Loic Remy started.

It is an incredible statistic considering 14 games is over a third of the season, Newcastle without Loic Remy only scored 4 goals.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

Cabaye's departure had a huge effect on those stats.

A two part question for the eds and reds.

1. How far do you think Hendo could develop his game. Could he ever be our own version of Vidal or a. We Gerrard and if so how soon?

2. Would you see him as the next vice captain should Agger leave and the eventual successor to Gerrard.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - more of a Vidal than Gerrard, though I really can't see him reaching quite that level. Physically he lacks the power of a Vidal, so he would need to be more technical to reach the same level. Impossible to say how long, he should improve until his 30s when he will need to alter his game.
Captain? Not sure myself.}

Thanks for the reply ed

Agree0 Disagree0

I was considering who I would make captain (as I believe it was a poll on this site that asked about Sakho). Obviously that's a slap in the face if Agger or Lucas stay, but Henderson has been here awhile now and that's his natural progression as I think he's dedicated to the club.

In the eventuality that Gerrard gets injured, who do you turn to for leadership in THIS squad?

Henderson is the only player I'd recommend without overthinking it. Sturridge is the star, especially in the absence of Suarez, but Henderson has to step up to that next level NOW. What better way to show faith in him than give him the armband when Gerrard is out? Its unlikely that both will be off the pitch at any point.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jul 2014 19:40:54
Henderson is the only natural leader in the squad who had a role that naturally allows him to be in all parts of the field and talk to everyone as necessary. He'd definitely the prime choice atm for captaincy in the future. I think it's been so long since we had an actual captain who lead by leadership rather than leading by being the shining light and example to the team that we forgot how valuable that style can be

Agree0 Disagree0

Brendan said coutinho is the brain of r team that means he will be a starter, but have to say options r coming his way now injuries shouldn't affect us as much now but the first name I would have in the team every week would be Henderson how much has this lad come on since he joined is unbelievable.Terry McDermott said the other night I can guarantee he won't start every game, injuries permitting he would be in my first 11.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

I follow and support the Brazil national team as much as I do Liverpool. The amount of reporters and fans on many of their sites, clamoring for Coutinho's insertion into the team is really surprising, since their World Cup debacle. Some have suggested he play next to Oscar and some have suggested that he even replace him. But recognition of his talent in "a team that plays some of the most attractive football in Europe" (I'm quoting a Brazilian website) speaks volumes of a player whom many of us saw as lightweight and unable to last a full game, at the beginning of the season. I hope he makes it into the team so that he grows in confidence and talent.

Does the situation in Ukraine mean that their league will be affected and therefore players available?

I wouldn't want to be in a country whilst a war was being waged.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

Expecting to take advantage of a horrible situation in another country like that is pretty low

Agree4 Disagree23

How is that 'pretty low'? If a player wants to leave, and a club bids an acceptable amount then what difference does the reasoning make? And quite frankly, bidding for a talented player because he wants to leave a country which is currently in the midst of chaos and war is a fair enough reason I reckon. The player's current club don't HAVE to sell, so if they do then it's because they've found the offer suitable and have let the player have their wish.

It isn't really taking advantage, it's business and it's giving the player an alternative location to ply his trade. The ball is in the selling club's park.

JFT 96

Think of it as less of a "taking advantage" and more of a "rescuing young players careers". I've heard Douglas Costa has refused to go to the country and he is not alone. Who can blame him?

Dont ask me Y. I still think We would pull off Moreno.

Agree1 Disagree2

(This is not aimed at the Original post)

The only people who don't rate Bertrand are people who've never sat and watched him. Not seen him play, but actually watched him closely. He is a very good defender who has been robbed of a proper chance.

Everyone was saying exactly the same about Sturridge and Coutinho when they signed "hur hur hur, Rejects! Couldn't get into their teams" etc. Now look at them. Bertrand is a Champions league winner. He played in the final against Bayern Munich and played damn well! And don't bring up the D.Traore argument, that is such a simplistic way of viewing things it's embarassing.

Bertrand is far better than any left back we have on the books at this moment in time, he is much better defensivey than Moreno, less injury/suspension prone than Rojo, better going forward than Flanno as it's his natural side and far more realistic than R.Rodriguez and Marcelo. I can't even begin to understand how anybody can rate Enrique as a better defender. I'd seriously rather have Traore there! At least he put in 100% and listened to his coaches/team mates.

Bertrand is 24 for crying out loud and some of the abuse he has taken on here is out of order. If Rodgers thinks Bertrand is good enough, that should be enough for you to at least give him a chance before we write him off.

Agree8 Disagree5

"Dont ask me Y. I still think We would pull off Moreno"

well that's certainly one way of getting him to sign

Agree7 Disagree0

25 Jul 2014 12:48:41
I am not sure "pulling off" Moreno will convince him to join us Harry.

Bertrand will be fine for us, have always liked him, he is young and with some consistent game time will hopefully prove all the doubters wrong and a fraction of the cost of other names linked.

Agree2 Disagree1

I remember a game in Rodgers first season when Enrique played. I'm sure it was against Young Boys in a 5-3 Europa league win. Enrique was at fault for literally all 3 of their goals. He is a liability because he cannot tackle, doesn't track back and constantly get's caught in possession. He is tall, strong, fast and technically good despite his lack of intelligence. That is where his football ability stops though. I've given him 3 years to prove me wrong and improve, and the only thing that's changed is he is now injury prone to boot. He just doesn't listen to anyone. He wants to play the Enrique way; head down sprint down a blind alley, get caught in possession, don't bother tracking back, hope the media blames the centre backs for not dealing with the cross. There is a reason nobody will take him off our hands. I think he'll end up staying for that reason, but I wouldn't trust him in anything other than the domestic cup games and when he walks out onto that pitch, i'll cheer him on and continue to hope he proves me wrong. I'm all for giving people 2/3 years to prove themselves; Enrique has now had 3. The only players whom for me time has ran out on is Johnson, Skrtel and Enrique. I wasn't massively impressed with Mingolet last season, but I'd be a hipocrite if I wrote him off just yet.

You can't expect players to come straight in and replicate their form instantly. Only a handful of players do it, and if you have a little patience then you end up with Henderson's, Lucas's and Suarez's (people forget how awful he was in his first season; 5% conversion rate from over 200 shots).

I understand that some of you doubt Bertrand because he is not a big name and isn't costing a bomb. He may not hit the ground running either. It is okay to be sceptic. However it is not okay to unleash a torrent of abuse on a player whom you have barely watched and whom has yet to pull a shirt on for us. Just as an example, look at how average Sahin was for us. Then he goes to Dortmund and BANG, top player. Some players just thrive in different environments/styles. Perhaps Bertrand will thrive at Anfield. Just wait and see please, and at the very least, try and justify your reasons for not rating him. "He is awful" is not a reason, it is an opinion. Expalin it and I might entertain it.

Agree8 Disagree3

I have watched Bertrand closely for Villa last season with about 10 appearances, his aerial ability is bad & basically his all round defending is ok.If we sign him its our owners tightness not to spend on Moreno. If BR got all his targets over the last couple of seasons Liverpool would of walked the EPL. I still have doubts about FSG & as for Ian Ayre doing transfer negotiations. the dogs in the street would do a better job.In Brendan We Trust. YNWA!

EMS

I think you DRASTICALLY underestimate how many people will have seen him week in week out.

Our fans on here are experts in multiple leagues having seen each player we are linked to play 20 games.
If they can do this in foreign leagues, they can certainly do it for the premiership.

Look how many experts there were when we were in for konoplyanka, moreno, rojo and markovic, who had seen them all play on many occasions.

They have clearly seen all of Bertrands appearances, especially those key ones at Aston Villa at a brilliant team, where he underperformed.

Ed, I wonder if you could clear this up for me

Garay is a top class CB, and was available for a cut price due to a clause I'm assuming, around £15m, of which Benfica received around £6m (I think)

Why on gods earth were Liverpool not interested? He went to Zenit, not Barca, and he's a better option to Lovren (IMO), and is cheaper, I don't understand. I'm also confused in similar ways about Ricardo Rodriguez and Aurier

Believable0 Unbelievable5

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool cannot buy every player who is for sale and even if they were interested in the likes of Garay Zenit is an attractive option.}

On what grounds exactly do you base the "he is better than Lovren" part? An extensive experience in the field of football scouting? I would like to know your credentials if that is the case! Why not trust the manager and the staff, geese.

Agree3 Disagree0

Drigan, based on what I've seen of Garay, he's an incredible CB. Lovren is also great, and I tihnk he'll improve us a lot, but we're paying £20m, or more for him if we get him, whereas Garay was a fair bit cheaper. Aurier for £9m was an absolute steal too, he's a quality player, who is also versatile

Agree1 Disagree0

Miike, I see what your saying. Why not buy the cheaper option that is equal to, or in your opinion slightly better.
I bet Zenit can still offer high salaries and champs league football year in year out.
I want our books to balance, remember we near went bust a couple of years back!
We need to sell to keep wages down, while having a large squad!
Perfect example, Glen Johnson, high wages, no use anymore. We need to get rid of him and promote the youth we have in that position. Frees up wages.

Agree2 Disagree0

There is no guarantee that Garay will cut it in the premier league though. Lovren has many advantages in terms of being accustomed to the league, and being able to communicate with Sakho in french. This should be worth more than the supposed 5 mil difference in price. Garay had huge potential, but somehow he has failed to reach it, at least in my opinion, and just as Hulk is likely to go on the decline.
Aurier - yes, good price, but we could not compete with PSG, and it would've meant that Flannagan would never get a chance if Jonson is moved, while if we get Manquilo, I would expect Flannagan to get the initial run of games to prove himself.

Thanks for the reasonable answer btw, I am really depressed reading all the negative posts around here, and overreacted a little.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd be very worried if our whole team was communicating in English and then Mingolet, Sakho and Lovren where sat at the heart of the team talking in French to eachother! Young Flanno barely speaks English bless him!

I've used the search function and to be honest there is very little available on Vidal. Seems the past few days the rumours having really been picking up regarding a possible move to Liverpool. I'm not so much asking wether or not the eds know anything of it, but rather stating that he would be my number one choice of any player, at any position, that is somewhat a realistic possibility. I know a lot of people are seeing his name thrown around to a few big clubs so they assume he is top quality. which he is. We all know that YouTube can make a crap player look like a world beater, but watch a few clips of Vidal and you will see where the hype is coming from. Truly world class with the heart of a champion. Please Brendan, step up and bring him to Liverpool.

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Jul 2014 01:01:08
I'll probably get shot down for this but here go's.
I don't think our defense was all that bad last season, all things considering.
The style of football they were asked to play would have put most defenders under enough pressure to make mistakes. They have so much more to do in terms of ground covered and passing. Also the inconsistency in a partnership was evident. I'd be happy with Skrtel and Sakho with Illori and Agger(I know won't happen) as backup!
Mignolet is the biggest problem atm imo.
He needs to command more. There's nothing worse than running back to the goal full pelt without a clue where the ball is, all your thinking is it might be coming to the guy your running next to. You need the keeper to have a voice. Also crosses, I am terrified every single cross/corner in a dangerous area. I like him. Nice guy and a good keeper but what he is missing is what we need.
Hopefully he will mature into it.

Believable1 Unbelievable7

I disagreed because we need a natural leader in the Carragher mode. Skrtel, Agger and Sahko aren't up to it if Stevies on the pitch. let's hope Lovren is. I think he will be a huge asset, and could replace Agger as vice captain.

Sakho can't help what the Right side of defence does.

SA Red.

Spot on mate, I did brought this point yesterday regarding a top Class DM. We would still concede goals without a top class DM. Lovern is a good player and would take some pressure off from the scoreline, But without a class DM it would be difficult.
Lovern also njoyed 2 holding DM at Southampton.

Agree0 Disagree2

How about they position themselves better so they don't have to run back toward goal trying to chase some 1 faster?

S

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh for another Carra.

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally I don't think there's too much wrong with us defensively. Skrtel had a brilliant season last year. His composure on the ball has improved immensely, his attacking of corneres is much better as the goals scored proves, last season if the ball was cleared from a cross into the box 90% of the time it was Skrtel clearing it and the silly challenges that used to put us under so much pressure have reduced. I think in comparison to the previous year he has made just as much improvement as Henderson.
Agger is a very good defender but the persistent injuries are having a seriously bad impact on his confidence and his flow in terms of getting a consistent run of games to gain confidence and match sharpness.
Flanagan has improved immensely under BR and I fully expect him to make the RB position his own next year.
Let's not forget it was Mignolet and Sakho's first season with us last year and I am certain they will both improve this season.
Martin Kelly is a very good player who's career has been massively disrupted by injuries, much like Agger, but if he can get his fitness up and stay clear of injuries I'm sure none of us will complain about having him as a backup CD or RB.
In Ilori I think we have potentially one of the best CD around. I watched the match against Barca last year when he was playing for Granada and he was outstanding, it was one of the few times I have seen a defender nullify and frustrate Messi.
Enrique is back and if he can find his form from 2 years ago, none of us will have any complaints about seeing him in the team.
Sign a better LB or someone to give Enrique competition and I think were pretty much covered.
Gerrard has had his first season as a DMF and I expect him to improve next season in the role.
I think one of our biggest problems defensively was how lacklustre we were at times in stopping the ball coming into our defence. Too many times teams attacked us down the flanks and got players running in behind with nobody tracking them, then there would be a very poor, lacklustre attempt to close the cross/pass into the box.
Since BR took over he has always addressed our biggest problem from the previous season. First year he improved the amount of chances that were being created as the previous year it was regarded as a big problem under KD.
Then last season he improved how many of those chances were converted.
Defence was clearly a problem area for us last season and I fully expect BR to have noticed this and will have the team working hard to improve it.
With us losing Suarez I actually think it will make us stronger defensively. BR was forced into playing Suarez and Sturridge together as I think Sturridge performed better than he expected him to and left BR no option but to play the two up front week in week out. This forced BR into changing his formation to suit. I think for most games this season we will revert back to BR's favoured 4-3-3 with Sturridge playing the lone striker role and any one of Lallana, Coutinho, Markovic, Sterling playing either side. This will now give us a stronger 3 man midfield of probably Gerrard, Henderson and Allen which will give the defence more protection.

Though hey what do I know.

I know I ain't seen much of him but I think Can could be the guy your all talking about, I know he is young but I did watch him a bit last season and the small glimpses I got so far pre season he looks a beast of a kid and also has good discipline and athleticism for the defensive midfield role

Scarface

As much as I agree to your views, I have just one point. Gerrard us not a DM. therz lot much a DM offer than Gerrard.
He might improve next season, If not we are in quiet a trouble.
Lucas is nearing an exit and We don't have a DM apart from part timer Gerrard.
A world class DM would make your back 4 brilliant.
Chelsea and City are the best examples
Liverpool and Arsenal comes in the negative side.

Sell Glen Johnson. There's the biggest problem in our defence. Looks like Lovren will replace Skrtel who can only get away with assaulting the opposition for so long. I'd have Flanagan as number one rb. Defence is always is prime objective

Eventually he could also play 3 at the back with Sterling on the right and Can on the left. You get another non defender in your team and can dominate midfield by having 5 or 6 in there. It's another option. LVG will often play like this, Everton have tried it. It worked for Holland and it's flexible as it can accommodate two main strikers if needs be.

Skrtel/Ilori Lovren? Sakho

Sterling. Gerrard Henderson. Can

Coutinho. Lallana

Sturridge

Dream
'Part timer Gerrard'?
He's going to be one hell of a player when he takes it on full time!

A lot of people on this website are talking about Adam Lallana playing wide left, I was under the assumption he would be playing in the 3 man midfield with Henderson and Gerrard to form our strongest midfield. Where do the rest of you see him playing?

Believable3 Unbelievable2

For me, he could do either, but I would agree with you and would love to see a trio of Lallana, Gerrard, and Henderson.

The way Coutinho is playing he has to be in our midfield.

I'd have Coutinho being the feeder for Sturridge, Sterling and Markovic. Then just behind Coutinho would be 2 of Gerrard, Henderson and Lallana pulling the strings.

Henderson and Gerrard will be alongside each other

Lallana Coutinho Sterling in front of them, with Sturridge up front.

Markovic will be eased in

. and the beauty with having Sterling, Coutinho & Lallana (Markovic, too) as an attacking three behind Sturridge, is they can all play anywhere across there, which takes this strict positional play out of the equation, which will be nice.

I feel we'll play a type of 4-1-4-1 with majorly Gerrard and Sturridge playing the two 1's. Lallana, Coutinho, Hendo and Sterling are good enough to play anywhere across that 4.
Looks good doesn't it :)

Both? Either? Depends what other players are available and where he would be best to target the weakness or nulify the strengths of the other team

The way I see it, Lallana is better in the middlethan Coutinho but only by a slim margin. However Lallana is far superior out wide. Lallana also has an excellent work rate and desire to press from the front. That is something we will lose from our front 3 in Suarez. Pallana actually works harder than even Luis did though and we saw how many mistakes that can draw out of defenders. For me, it's a case of whether or not you'd rather have Lallana pulling the strings with Markovic in the front 3, or Coutinho pulling the strings with Lallana in the front 3. I'd be more keen to fit Coutinho into the side than Markovic right now. Coutinho offers very little out wide and needs to be played centrally so I can get in between the lines where he operates best.

We're going to have lots of good options for midfield and attack.

I think 4-2-3-1 with Lallana left of the 3 will be common.

4-1-2-3 with him left of the 2 will be great and more attacking.

An occassional alternative of 4-1-2-1-2 with Gerrard - Henderson & Lallana in midfield and Coutinho behind 2 from Sterling, Sturridge and Markovic will be the most entertaining formation in the prem next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

-There are a multitude of formations we will play throughout the season

-There will be different teams with different tactics required and different players

-There will be injuries fatigue and thus players will need breaks

-most of our players brought in so far seem very versatile and will be able to play different roles when needed

Agree0 Disagree0

It'll be horses for courses. I'd expect Gerrard will be rested more this year. One start a week and on the bench once as insurance. If we are sitting deeper and countering we will use Sterling, Markovich and Remy more. If we need to unpick a defence it'll be Sterling or Markovich with Lallana and Coutinho. I think Sturridge will be managed carefully too so I'd expect lots of starts or final 30 mins for Rickie or Remy through the middle.

Agree1 Disagree1

Coutinho had a bad season I'm hoping his confidence is just low from not being picked for Brazil but how people can say he has to start I'll never understand he does lots of pretty footwork but he hasn't had an end product since his first 6 months

I'm not one for asking questions but something I would like to know if possible? How do the loans work ie. Rodrigo to Valencia aurier to psg does the team benefit from a down payment or something along them lines? Just don't see any other reason why teams would loan there better players .
Thanks

{Ed002's Note - Payment, plus option to buy is the norm in Europe. PSG are looking to make another big buy and have to balance the books, so they pay over the odds over a longer period this way. Suits everyone.}

Thanks for the reply I know it sounded like a stupid question but I just couldn't get my head around it.
