You have to put it down to those doing the negotiating.
Not being a regular in the knockout stages of the Champions league and not winning trophies makes us a less attractive option for players. I imagine, to get the deals over the line, agents are given more generous terms.

Essexred does have a point though - we obviously paid too much several times, but the volume of players bought does have a part to play.

City would have paid Sterling's agent, not us. I imagine a big chunk of it went to Mino with the remainder being scattered amongst the other 878 Essexred mentioned. Turns out buying gobs of players means paying gobs of agents.
