For everyone who's getting so upset about Caulker, don't. Rodgers had a compulsion to sign player after player (needed or not) and spend endless money, Klopp has already indicated he won't do that and has a track record of being clever in the market. Not every signing has to be a world star or even a first XI starter, this is clearly the case of plugging a hole. Subotic, Matip, Caceres etc.!? Not one of them are world class (Subotic isn't! ) so why bring them in on megabucks and with an over inflated price now? Maybe, just maybe, Klopp is taking a measured approach and waiting for the summer? I read a lot about people saying this season is a write-off and that we should wait - those same people that are now screaming about the Caulker deal. Relax. and discuss.

{Ed001's Note - Caulker is on a higher wage than Subotic....}

At Ed001 at least it's only until June, unlike Mario and co that are worthless but still on the books.

12 Jan 2016 14:22:18
But doesn't subotic want a permanent deal ed? So maybe he is just plugging a gap until better players are available in the summer like you and ed002 have said countless times, it's difficult to sign quality in January.

{Ed001's Note - yes he wants a permanent deal, but he has not got one yet or he would have taken it. This just smacks of desperation, which is a poor way to run a business.}

12 Jan 2016 14:37:33
I don't see desperation Ed. The past two summers have been desperation. Just spend spend spend. This loan move is a cheaper alternative than outright buying someone for inflated January prices. I'm not over the moon about the signing I'm just saying this was a low risk signing. If he impresses then he could get a contract as a Toure replacement in the summer. If not, then he goes.

{Ed001's Note - it is desperation as we already have centre backs. Signing one on big wages for a short term fix is not a cheaper alternative, if this is how we put together a squad, it will cost us a lot more.}

12 Jan 2016 14:59:10
I agree ed, I think it is an awful signing but I was just replying to the original post regarding Subotic, who I also would rather wait until the summer if he was all that was available. (unless he was a loan) .

12 Jan 2016 15:00:04
I'd say at this point we are a little desperate though. Caulker is Caulker, but he's also not Enrique.

12 Jan 2016 15:11:56
Enrique is the lowest of lowest of bars to use to judge a player. Having said that, How in the the heck did this happen and what "genius" sanctioned such a horrific deal? The guy is pants. Will incompetence never leave this club alone?

12 Jan 2016 15:19:34
Hes awful, and NOT who i envisaged coming in, not even on loan or as cover, i'm interested to hear what Klopp says about it.

{Ed023's Note - What do you expect him to say? Steven who? He's awful, it's Ian Ayre's fault, I wanted someone else.. Klopp is involved in this process.

Klopp probably thinks Caulker would be a good fit for 6 months. After all Klopp has changed everyone's opinion on Lovren so where's the proof he can't do the same with Caulker?}

12 Jan 2016 15:19:21
Ed001 - Couple of questions. 1) Do you not think Subotic would demand much higher wages to play in the Prem? 2) Panic? It's a loan and January 12th. Surely if it was a panic we'd be looking at, oh I don't know, £10-20million plus £80-100k+ for a player who's currently bench-warming?
A point. I'm a little surprised, aren't you a flag bearer for giving English players and old English coaches from the lower leagues a go/ 48th chance? ;)

{Ed001's Note - 1) No he wasn't, he just wanted to wait and see if a permanent deal would come in.
2) Exactly, so why do it now? Why not wait and look around? Instead we went and got an unwanted player, one who couldn't even make the bench, and are paying those kind of wages plus a loan fee, with no chance of getting any return from it.
I have no interest in what country a player is from, I don't know where you got that nonsense from. What I want is us to stop wasting money on crap and utilise the youth we have.}

12 Jan 2016 17:07:39
Agree 100% on the youth - and apologies, was meant to be a tongue in cheek comment. I've not posted before but I'm assuming you have to put up with a lot of bulls*&t on here. You're clearly very knowledgeable so can we change path? My question to you would be, what would you see as a succesful transfer window? For me, I don't believe we should be spending at all (unless a top class keeper comes available, which he won't) and then come summer we shift the 'expensive average' Milner, Mignolet, Benteke, Skrtl and poss Moreno (Smith already looks ready to me), and go again then. I'm sure we'll get an upgrade on players under Klopp v Rodgers, no need throw bad money at bad in January - present Caulker accepted.
P. S. Subotic definitely wants and deserves more than £40k in this market ;)

{Ed001's Note - sorry mate, I am extremely tired today, so probably a bit grumpy, recording the podcast meant a late night. I thought a successful transfer window would be recalling the youth and giving them a chance. I don't see the need to bring anyone in myself. This was a season to assess and prepare for the summer window. Personally I didn't want Subotic either.}

12 Jan 2016 17:18:52
No problem at all. Haha - funny thing is we seem to agree generally! At least the youth have been recalled - let's see who gets a good go. For me Smith is ready now. Brannagan, Ojo and Kent look like the ones who'd hold their own in select games too.

The point is someone like ilori who one of the yonger cbs should of been given this opportunity as they rarely come about, and see if they could take it as the first team cbs will be back in a month or so and so will the opportunity to get some games

Caulker simply blocks the path of yet another player.

Remember everyone kicking off with markovic over ibe. Pure hypocricy!

Ed023 If you believe this to be a good signing that's up to you, personally I think its scraping the barrel of the highest order and NOT befitting of this club, it also doesn't send a good message to the under 21's,
If we truly believed as a club that we can still make top four then would we be signing him? would this be who Utd, Chelsea, City or Arsenal would sign? even in a mess for injuries? No, that's all I need to know, I don't doubt Klopp I think he needs time and I love his attitude but while a club like ours still has a chance of glory then we should do the very best to attain it, this is just making do, and nobody can comment on being short term for our other centre halves as none of those are that great either and he's just another wage added to an already over inflated bill.

{Ed023's Note - I never said it was a good signing, I don't judge any signing until I actually see them play for the club - I'll give my thoughts on the signing in a few months. I suggested the Klopp thinks it's a good fit for 6 months.}
