Moving away from any current dramas, there's always one transfer that I can never wrap my head around from a Liverpool perspective.

We had Andre Wisdom, a big and quick defender who was decent on the ball and was still young, with Prem experience, and shipped him out only to replace him with Manquillo on loan. A young Spanish lad failing to get into his current team with no experience in the Prem whatsoever.

Can any of the Eds shed any light on the reasons (if there were any) behind this?

I know it's a long time ago but it's something that's always puzzled me.

Cheers in advance.

{Ed001's Note - I never understood the thinking in that one either. The reasoning given was that Manquillo was meant to be an attacking fullback with better technical skills who could play either side. Obviously no one had actually bothered to scout him (or if they had they should have been immediately sacked) or they would have known he was a terrible player with a poor workrate and no improvement on what we had.}

If he moves to Liverpool, there will be fireworks but I guess it won't happen. I blame a short circuit somewhere.

That made me think of Arbeloa out for £5M to Real Madrid and Glen Johnson in for £17.5M - another headscratcher. tho nowhere near as odd as the Robbie Keane debacle.

I know we all regret Xabi and Masch going too soon but what's the biggest transfer balls up in recent memory? Tempted to say getting rid of Calamity James and Brad Friedel considering the form they went on to have later on in their careers and the inconsistency we had with keepers when they left. Sander Westerweld anyone?

Buying Andy Carroll.

i think arbeloa though a really good right back for us wasn't going to command a high fee, we didn't pay much for him and he wanted to go to madrid so for once the club were decent with a player and allowed the move. robbie keane however was a different story and by all accounts was living a thoroughly less than professional lifestyle so benitez outed him, should have replaced him though.
biggest waste of money for me would be el hadji diouf for his disgraceful behaviour in a liverpool shirt and for sizeable investment completely wasted id have to say alberto aquilani.

Selling Peter Crouch when we did. I was absolutely gutted.

Jovanovic, Poulsen and Konchesky - the only point in my 37 year love affair with LFC that I thought we are no longer relevant and potentially heading towards the abyss.

Add Joe Cole too, BobbyF.

I to this day am annoyed that Suarez and Torres were never allowed to play with each other. Of course Torres never was the same at Chelsea we got good money at the time and brought in Sturridge who meshed well with Suarez but I loved El Nino and think we win the league with those two up top. Also thought trying to replace Alonso was an idiotic thing to do as he was one of the best in world football at the time.

Yet we sold Martin Kelly that season as well to accomodate two totally crap RB's in GJ and Manquillo, who were later replaced with another poor RB in Clyne, all under BR's watch. Trust me, the damage BR's incompetence did to this club is still being felt. Thank Heavens, Klopp found us TAA in the academy who to me, is the real deal.

Agreed Voronin. By the way, you weren't far off from making the list. I wasn't expecting Voronin to be a world beater but I was hoping he would be a good quality attacking option.
