Hi Ed001

I've used the search function and have seen a comment from you about Carragher in his early days getting criticised and I'll admit I was naive enough to be amongst them but wanted to get your opinion on why he wasn't performing. was it purely due to getting played out of position or because he was still learning/ trying to fit into the team or something else and leading on from that do you see any of our current CB's turning the fan's opinion around and becoming much stronger performers?

Thanks.

{Ed001's Note - well for one he was performing well, it was just that every slight little thing he did wrong the fans would jump on. However he did get even better as he went along and gained experience, because he worked hard on his game.

None of our centre backs are anything like Carra, they don't obsess over the game the way he did.}

One of things I miss most about Carra is his voice screaming out at his teammates during a game, you could hear it even on TV.

My favourite player when he was at the club, he's just the type of player/ leader we need in the team at the moment.

Thanks Ed001, appreciate your response.

{Ed001's Note - I have to admit I was probably very biased when he played, but I always thought he was very hard done by when the fans would criticise him. They would be moaning because he wasn't Fowler or Gerrard or Owen and scoring goals. Every goal that was conceded seemed to be blamed on him, even when it was not his fault. He was the scapegoat for a while as he was a trier and people assumed that meant he had no ability. He was always a far better player on the ball than he was given credit for.}

Ed is right here, Carragher was alright on the ball, hence him being shipped around CB, LB, RB and also as a defensive midfielder.
You really don't realise what you have until its gone, we were all so used to Carragher barking orders that we hardly noticed it, now he's gone we have no one organising at the back, and probably no one with the balls or backing to explain to the manager that were struggling with the current zonal marking set up, even if Carragher does appear to be a great advocate of zonal marking when its done right.

{Ed001's Note - zonal is not the problem, if we went man to man they would still be hopeless without an organiser. We need a goalkeeper who is not as nice as Migs and will kick them round the training ground if they let him down in the matches.}

in carragher early days when he played right back and left back he was solid defensively but a bit like clyne offered nothing going forward, he would get in to a crossing position and play the ball backwards but that is because he was never a fullback. and as soon as he went to centre back we see the best of carragher and I think no one must have more regrets than Jamie for not playing one more season because we would have walked the league that year with him in the heart of the defence. 4 years on and still nowhere near replacing him.

I don't think it is complete zonal marking anyway. I remember Rafa using the same system years ago where certain players were zonal and other picked up runners. We didn't concede anywhere near the amount of goals as we do now. Its the players that are the issue, or the coaching if you like. Good players should be able to work into any system given they have had pre season and train every week.

Spot on, Ed and Andy. Carra was an old school CB/ defender who learnt from the likes of Hansen and Hyppia. Back then, the CB and GK were empowered by the manager to bark out orders and organize the team in defensive situations. These players were able to do that cos they were an extension of the manager's brain on the pitch and if something was not working, they would talk it out with the manager in-game. Buffon is the only GK I see, who till this day, does that right now as that is how he was taught 2 decades ago, playing with the likes of Canavarro, Nesta, Maldini etc., legends of the game.

Now, managers have ruined the game with their pathetic, rigid systems that does not allow for any outside input from players in a bid to get all the credit as they are all now control freaks. The players seem to not be allowed to have an opinion or give input on anything anymore.

Irish Rover you are right, we do have a few who man mark too. The stupid thing being they are usually our smallest players marking giants which baffles me every time I see it. Whyyyyyy?!

When did the fans start singing 'we all dream of a team of Carraghers'? Hadn't realized he ever got criticism. I always thought he was great.

{Ed001's Note - he was very much a target of criticism in his earliest years. I can remember one night having a chat with him about it in Sullys and he was a bit the worse for wear. He admitted it did get to him at times, but he had the support of his family, who were very good at backing him. He did become a cult hero fairly early, but a large proportion of the fans did not rate him up until very late in his career. No idea why, but some people just hate to admit they were wrong I think.}

Ed001 has clearly never seen Mignolet's kicking!

{Ed001's Note - I have, that is the problem, they are not scared of him because every time he tries to kick someone's arse he misses....}

Kind of the same thing with Lucas, Ed. He was only appreciated by the fans in his final season at LFC. Never before.

{Ed001's Note - some still do not appreciate him mate.}
